Pros: I thought the staff were very nice. Location was perfect. Short walk from Retiro park and Sol which is a great square surrounded by shops and where the main metro and train station is. The hotel was lovely decorated , jelly’s in the lobby were a great touch. Recommendations from staff were great and helpful. The only slight disappointments I have if I am being picky is, for the value, the room is small. It’s a lovely room but it is smaller than I expected. There is no iron in your room and it can be a bit of a pain having to call down if in a rush as they did bring it up to our room. And finally the rooftop bar, while very nice and comfortable, was very expensive compared to everywhere else we had a drink in Madrid. But all in all a really nice hotel with very nice and polite staff.

The rooms are excellent. The rooftop bar is fun and the breakfast is a delight and excellent service by the staff. beyond that, it's the owner who is an art collector and creates an exhibition on every floor and turned the -1 floor into a gallery space which he represent his private collection.

Pros: As other people have said, it is the staff at this hotel that were really great and I have told people about it that I would not normally tell or make comment to. If all hotels used this one as an example of how to deal with customers from the point you enter it, travelling would be a lot more pleasant. It is the little things that they do so well and always cheerfully, they respond, they are good at what they do from the restaurant to the bar to reception and the doorman and porter. I dont know how they do it, but they need to keep the secret and keep it going!!

Cons: WORST STAY EVER! I arrived at 2am for a short stay due to a flight next day, and when I was ready to sleep I noticed 3 windows at the ceiling of my room. NO ONE could figured out HOW TO CLOSE the damn windows... To add to that: the guy at the reception told me a few times that they had NO rooms available and that I had to sleep like that. I was fuming at 4 am, and I had to pressure them to give me another room to sleep. BUT, at that point it was 4 am; and I was stressed like hell. On my check-out they gave us 10% discount, which to me, sounds RIDICULOUS, comparing to the STRESS they put me thought.

Cons: Other than at reception, very few staff spoke English which made general requests difficult, asking for foods connected to allergies very problomatic, breakfast was easier as the display was marked but at lunch or dinner in the restaurant, there was no allergy advice, the gluten free rolls were tasteless and the staff could not help in our choices because of the language barrier.

Pros: Location is excellent for visiting the major art galleries and is close to the railway station if you plan to explore beyond Madrid. It is situated in a wide tree-lined boulevard (which is also a busy dual carriageway) but is opposite the Botanical gardens and is a pleasant street to walk along but on the other side rather than the side of the hotel which is a rather scruffy. Wonderful views from the upper floors. We loved our room with a balcony. Bedrooms and bathrooms are good quality and the breakfasts are really fabulous. Worth staying in this hotel just for that.

Pros: Location is excellent for visiting the major art galleries and is close to the railway station if you plan to explore beyond Madrid. It is situated in a wide tree-lined boulevard (which is also a busy dual carriageway) but is opposite the Botanical gardens and is a pleasant street to walk along but on the other side rather than the side of the hotel which is a rather scruffy. Wonderful views from the upper floors. We loved our room with a balcony. Bedrooms and bathrooms are good quality and the breakfasts are really fabulous. Worth staying in this hotel just for that.
Cons: Only the street outside! There is a large McDonalds to one side and a series of unappealing souvenir and takeaway shops to the other, plus bus stops on the pavement. It's a very busy street and not very attractive at this end but cross over the road and you are in a different world.

Facilities are poor; you ask for iron and iron board you are told to speed up to return ASAP We requested a scale to check the weight of our suitcases but told must go at the reception to do that despite explaining to them that we have many suitcases and want to ensure that we are not exceeding the airline limits for each one but that didn't help they insisted "if you want you come down with your suitcases". When staying at the NH Madrid Nacional hotel, you will be in a privileged location on Paseo del Prado and steps away from Madrid’s Art Triangle. The Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia museums are right by the hotel. The 1920s building was designed by the famous architect Modesto López Otero and is located across the street from the Atocha train station. When we got into the room, after a long trip, there was no even a bottle of water, which for a 5 star hotel is not normal to see. Then we could only use one plug on the bathroom to charge our phones as the were no more plugs in the room, we even looked in the map of the room and it was saying there were more but impossible to find. Moreover, it was impossible to call front desk which was number 9, but there were no instructions of how to do it. One more thing were the difficulty to turn off the lights, where I had to stand up to remove the key for the electricity of the room.

Rooms have air-con so if you turn it on and close the window - no noise. Location is great - neighborhood is safe and there are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. In addition, you are within a walking distance of the majority of Madrid's landmarks (some are 5 minutes walk away some 30 minutes). Anyway, metro station is close and you have 2 lines (important ones) crossing there so you should not have any problems moving through Madrid. You could find some faults in the room if you are really, really picky - furniture has a scratch or two, but in general impression is great. Rooms have hardwood floor, so bring your slippers if you are not used to walk barefoot on it. And - hotel has a real hair dryer which was a nice surprise. Warmly recommend to stay here.

Cons: The safe was a little smaller than average which meant it didn’t fit my iPad and MacBook. They had an electric kettle on the room but no mugs or milk so I had to go down to the bar but the staff were so lovely I didn’t mind this at all.

Cons: The room Air conditioning was almost non existent. It was very warm in Madrid when we stayed. I need to be under the covers when I sleep. The pillows were the worst I have ever encountered! They were long and thin so they offered no head support. If you folded them in half it was worse because it became very firm and uncomfortable like sleeping on a bath towel that was rolled up and then folded in half. I need absolute darkness to sleep. The light illuminating from the TV literally lit the room up. It wasn't until our last night that I figured to cover the TV with blankets. The walls and ceilings seem thin because I heard banging and conversations going on in other rooms, both above and on the side of me. You could even hear the people across the hall. The complimentary breakfast buffet also was not worth even going to. Everything was not only substandard and cheap, but while we were there the hotel was at capacity, so the buffet area was extremely loud, and everyone was grabbing food as fast as they could. We ate breakfast outside each day after that. Bottom line...Spend a few extra bucks for a more comfortable hotel, with a better breakfast!
