I was impressed by the quality of the food and service and the fact that my dietary needs were catered for ( I had requested goats milk rather than cows ). The staff went out of their way to be helpful, arranging for us to check into our room early and carrying our luggage to our room . The lounge area is cosy and comfortable serving bar food . Fantastic location for our needs ; next to YORK Minster and within easy reach of shops etc .

Cons: The standard of the decor and maintainence are quite poor considering the location, the beautiful building and the price of the accomodation. The carpets and decor are in poor condition, dated and not particularly clean looking.

Pros: We wanted to have a unique experience in an old British style townhouse instead of just another modern hip hotel- and we are very happy with the stay! The room is very clean which is unexpected given that it's an old townhouse. Towels and beddings were very clean and new! The room preserves its antique taste but is fully equipped with everything we needed. Water, kettled, free tea etc. It was delightful! We felt very special :) The bath was lovely with piping hot water!

Cons: The only tiny thing would be that the tap had cold and hot water run separately- so we could either get ice cold water or boiling hot water- haha which I guess gives us a truly old time experience? Not a huge problem though! I've read reviews that the staff weren't too friendly. True that they could smile a little more- but- they were as helpful and as accommodating as we needed for our stay- so I have no complaints. Location is a little far from town centre- but that was clear when we booked- so, not really a complaint- the experience of living in this townhouse made up for it for sure! DIdn't mind the little bit of distance and quietness!

Cons: Do not visit York when the Christmas markets are on. We could find nowhere to eat in the evening - not even the hotel which was extremely busy with non residents eating in the restaurant and drinking in the bar. We had a takeaway in our room - which considering the prices we were paying to stay was not acceptable! - Also be aware there is NO parking at this hotel we had a 30 minute walk with a suitcase from the car park we found. We were driving around for nearly an hour trying to find parking. The hotels suggested public parking lot was full!

Staff were a little dismissive of me when pointing out that the 'cosy room' was too small and not value for money. Surprised to be charged £10 per night for car parking - it may have been in booking info, but obviously so. Cons: We were booked in for 4 nights, arriving on a Saturday, the first room we were taken to was, what was called a courtyard room. It was cold, damp, with mould on the ceiling, dirty walls and cobwebs. the Heating did not work and the toilet flush was hanging out the wall. we ask for another room and were told they were fully booked in the main hotel, but we could change to another courtyard room for the night and try and change again in the morning. The other courtyard room was just as bad, it was December and the heating did not work in that room either, although it was slightly cleaner, we had a cold night trying to sleep, with a lot of noise outside the window, when someone was putting rubbish in the big bins outside our room, early in the morning. The following morning we went straight to the reception and ask to be moved, the staff were very understanding and apologetic and upgraded us to a superior room in the main hotel for the rest of our stay. That room was fantastic, the bathroom alone was half the size of our original room. We were quiet surprized to find that the money we paid did not include breakfast, which was a further £12 a head if you booked the day before, but £14 a head on the day. Very expensive, we went to an amazing local café and a full English with tea or coffee for £9.

Cons: The feather pillows with no alternative was very uncomfortable for my daughter who has asthma. The heating was off in the room and we turned it to 3 but nothing happened. Turned it to 5 and it took a few hours to kick in, causing all of us to be awake at 4am sweating, having gone to sleep cold. No fridge in the room or bottled water. Disappointed as other Hilton Hotels we have stayed in this has been standard.

Cons: There was no charging ports for phones on the bed side table, which would of been preferred. Didn't understand the pay system in the bar, as we ordered 2 drinks and were not asked to pay and were not given a receipt or any proof of what we had. We went to pay and had to tell the bar staff what we had ordered, to enable us to pay (so it is a good job we are honest people!).

Cons: There were a few minor issues Room was extremely hot but a fan was provided. It was noise in the morning with then Kitchen staff were making breakfast which was below our room. One strange thing was where we were allowed to keep our bags before we checked in our room...this room was unmanned unlocked. I would of liked to keep out luggage somewhere secure, although on request the staff did keep my laptop at reception instead Wireless access was poor had problems connecting.

Cons: The refreshments in the room. I had a cup of tea and left most of it! Didn't enjoy it at all. Didn't get any biscuits but for the price I paid for the room that was absolutely fine.

Cons: Lighting in room was awful and all usual spoils that expect were clearly cut to minimum eg no biscuits cheap minimal toiletries. Vanitsry mirror broken Reception area is dismal. Shower room was tiny and uncomfortable Abd I’m only 5ft 3 and 8stone.

Cons: The room was really small, which was ok for the price but it was quite hard for 2 people to get around the room at the same time.

Cons: Brought our beloved pooch to celebrate daughter 16th birthday , was told couldn’t bring her into the bar area , we was planning to have a few drink with all our family that evening to celebrate , we was told it was policy and understand the member of staff was just following , there was no one in the bar area and no one in the food area which was a shame because we could have stayed for a few hours . I didn’t expect to take our dog in the food ate but the bar shouldn’t have been a problem. Whilst in York centre we had a lovely family meal in a restaurant that allowed us to bring our dog with us , if we had know we couldn’t go into that area we would have stayed out celebrating in the many dog friendly establishment

Cons: The standard of the room we were in. The bathroom door was on a tilt so to be able to close it you had to lift it up almost of the hinges. The bed side tables were just planks of wood coming out from the wall one of which were broken and plug sockets were on the opposite room away from the beds. Staff don't acknowledge you
