Norway entry details and exceptions

Entry to Norway is applicable to Norwegian citizens, foreigners residing in Norway, foreigners who are family members of an EU/EEA citizen who is going to settle in Norway, or an EU/EEA citizen who is a family member of a Norwegian citizen who is going to settle in Norway, foreigners invited by the Norwegian authorities and employees of international organizations and foreigners who are going to stopover at an airport in Norway.

People with essential works like journalists, diplomats, military personnel, seafarers, aviation personnel and scientists with their crew members on a marine research cruise can also enter Norway.

Travelers from selected third countries approved by EU can enter Norway provided that their reason is to visit their family members (spouse, cohabitant for t least two years, children or stepchildren, grandchildren or great-grandchildren, parents or stepparents and grandparents). Travelers must provide a document proving that they are visiting a family member who are citizens or resident of Norway.

Permitted travelers (except for fully vaccinated individuals) must fill out the Digital entry registration prior to arrival in Norway. The receipt to be received must be presented to the police at the border.

Norway only accepts vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Currently, only a certificate (Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, or EU digital COVID-19 certificate) with a QR code can be verified by Norwegian authorities.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Unvaccinated visitors from South Africa must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) or Antigen (quick-test) test taken 24 hours before departing to Norway.

Fully vaccinated visitors with approved vaccination certificates do not need to present a negative COVID-19 test.

Details and exceptions

Travelers are required to present a negative PCR test (in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English, French or German) before arrival in Norway. Upon arrival at the border, they will need to be tested again.

Children under 12, fully vaccinated travelers (administered with 2 doses of vaccine and 1 for single dose vaccine - Janssen) and individuals who recovered from COVID-19 who received 1 dose of vaccine at least one week prior to travel are exempt from testing.

Quarantine requirements

Unvaccinated visitors from South Africa will need to quarantine for 10 days upon entering Norway.

Fully vaccinated visitors with approved vaccination certificates do not need to quarantine.

Details and exceptions

Everyone arriving in Norway, except from safe areas, are required to quarantine. Quarantine may be stopped if a negative test result is presented 3 days after arrival for children under 18 years of age and those who have had their first vaccine dose between 3 and 15 weeks ago. For other travelers, quarantine will be stopped if a certificate of negative test is provided 7 days after arrival. Fully vaccinated and individuals who recovered from COVID-19 for the last 180 days are exempt from quarantine.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Travellers returning from Norway must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) test taken 72 hours before departure to South Africa.

Details and exceptions

traveler with no proof of a negative COVID-19 test result will be required to do an antigen test on arrival at his or her own cost and if positive for COVID-19, he or she will be required to isolate at their own cost, for a period of 10 days.

Children under the age of 5 are exempt from presenting a COVID-19 test.

Quarantine requirements

Visitors returning from Norway are not required to quarantine upon entering South Africa.

Fully vaccinated visitors with approved vaccination certificates do not need to quarantine.

Details and exceptions

Travelers who display any COVID-19–related symptoms must be tested on arrival. In the event that the result of the COVID-19 test is positive, they will be required to quarantine for 10 days. The cost of testing and quarantine will be on the travelers' expense.
