DO NOT RENT FROM THRIFTY/DOLLAR IN SOUTH AFRICA
Pros: While renting a car, I had the unfortunate experience of having a flat tire while driving on one of the roads in Johannesburg. While replacing the spare, my girlfriend and i saw that the spare tire that was provided had a badly dented rim and the tool that comes with the car (the one that removes the nuts of the flat tire, so that the flat could be removed..i forgot that tool's name) was too large so it was unable to remove the nuts of the flat tire so that the flat tire could be removed and replaced. It was sweltering hot, and we were in a dangerous and unknown environment and I was very nervous for our safety, especially as there is no 911 and as luck would have it, we were out of airtime on the local sim card cell phone, since earlier i was on a business call that lasted awhile. After struggling to use the tool for an hour and a half, a kind South African Zulu helped us by stopping his car and helping us replace our tire since he had the proper tool. It was a blessing that we weren't robbed, or worst, and that the spare we used to drive barely got us to the rental company. When I drove immediately to Thrifty/Dollar and provided the pics of the both the flat tire and the dented spare, so that they were side by side, INSTEAD of admitting that it created a dangerous environment to be in, the general manager, FUAD KOILA, said he wouldnt charge me $180 for the damage of the rubber was punctured (no rubber tube costs $180) and the administrative costs? ADMINISTRATION COSTS? That's it?! That's how you deal with this type of scenario? Out of 8 days the car was rented, not one free day to compensate for the inconvenience? Their response was laughable and horrible at the same time You can tell the the measure of a company by how they treat their customers when something like this happens, and I was a regular, up until this experience. This company does not care for customers. You're better off going elsewhere, lest you have a very bad and unfortunate experience like I did.
Cons: 1) Horrible service. 2) Car was ill equipped [i.e. Spare tire provided was badly dented and the tool provided to take off the nuts so that our flat could be replaced was too large].
