Uruguay entry details and exceptions

Uruguayan citizens, travelers with resident status, and travelers who can enter Uruguay as long as they have the proper documentation are travelers with business, economic, judicial, humanitarian, diplomatic, work, or family reasons are exempted from this restriction.

Travelers must have health insurance coverage in Uruguay.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Visitors from South Africa must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) test taken 72 hours before departing to Uruguay.

Details and exceptions

Travelers under the age of 6 and travelers who recovered from COVID-19, and who have proof of a positive test result from an antigen or RT-PCR test that was taken between 20 and 90 days before traveling are exempted from this requirement.

Quarantine requirements

Unvaccinated visitors from South Africa will need to quarantine for 14 days upon entering Uruguay.

Fully vaccinated visitors with approved vaccination certificates do not need to quarantine.

The isolation period can be shortened

After 7 days of quarantine, travelers can get a test. If the test is negative, travelers do not need to quarantine further.

Details and exceptions

Fully vaccinated travelers who received their last dose in the last 6 months before travel and at least 15 days before their entry into Uruguay and travelers who recovered from COVID-19 in no more than 90 days before their travel. They must have proof of a positive antigen or RT-PCR test result from a test taken at least 20 days before arrival are exempted from this requirement.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Travellers returning from Uruguay must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) test taken 72 hours before departure to South Africa.

Details and exceptions

traveler with no proof of a negative COVID-19 test result will be required to do an antigen test on arrival at his or her own cost and if positive for COVID-19, he or she will be required to isolate at their own cost, for a period of 10 days.

Children under the age of 5 are exempt from presenting a COVID-19 test.

Quarantine requirements

Visitors returning from Uruguay are not required to quarantine upon entering South Africa.

Fully vaccinated visitors with approved vaccination certificates do not need to quarantine.

Details and exceptions

Travelers who display any COVID-19–related symptoms must be tested on arrival. In the event that the result of the COVID-19 test is positive, they will be required to quarantine for 10 days. The cost of testing and quarantine will be on the travelers' expense.
