South Korea entry details and exceptions

Korea has temporarily suspended their visa-free travel agreement due to COVID-19, excluding diplomats, official, or service passport holders; airline crew and passengers with an APEC Business Travel Card. Visitors will need a valid visa to enter and are advised to consult their nearest Embassy for visa and entry restrictions prior to entry as restrictions are subject to change.

Entry restrictions do not apply to Korean nationals and their family members, government officials, overseas Koreans, Travelers Diplomats, and International Agreement holders. Long-term residents are required to apply for a re-entry permit before entry. More details can be found here.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Visitors from South Africa must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) test taken 72 hours before departing to South Korea.

Details and exceptions

All travelers, including vaccinated individuals are required to have a negative PCR test in English or Korean language taken within 72 hours from departure date.

Children aged 6 and below, Korean nationals, and passengers in transit who will not enter South Korea are exempt from test requirement.

Quarantine requirements

Visitors from South Africa will need to quarantine for 14 days upon entering South Korea.

Details and exceptions

Travelers are required to quarantine for 14 days at a government-designated facility at their own expense. Korean nationals, long-term foreign visitors with an Alien Registration Card, Korean Residence and spouse of a Korean national and family members of lineal descent may quarantine at their residential address.

Exceptions to quarantine may be applicable to those who were vaccinated in South Korea, on important business, attending conferences, or on humanitarian grounds and individuals with an Isolation Exemption Certificate issued by a Korean embassy or consulate. Those who have an Isolation Exemption Certificate must be tested on arrival and must quarantine for 1 or 2 days until the result is available.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Travellers returning from South Korea must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) test taken 72 hours before departure to South Africa.

Details and exceptions

traveler with no proof of a negative COVID-19 test result will be required to do an antigen test on arrival at his or her own cost and if positive for COVID-19, he or she will be required to isolate at their own cost, for a period of 10 days.

Children under the age of 5 are exempt from presenting a COVID-19 test.

Quarantine requirements

Visitors returning from South Korea are not required to quarantine upon entering South Africa.

Fully vaccinated visitors with approved vaccination certificates do not need to quarantine.

Details and exceptions

Travelers who display any COVID-19–related symptoms must be tested on arrival. In the event that the result of the COVID-19 test is positive, they will be required to quarantine for 10 days. The cost of testing and quarantine will be on the travelers' expense.
