Pros: I told them I am severely asthmatic. When I walked into the room I immediately smelled musty old rug that was cleaned at least dozens of times and exhausted its useful life a long time ago. I went back to the front desk and told them needed a different room for medical reasons and willing to pay more. The front desk person and the day manager told me that they did not have availability without any serious they said no without any consideration and force me to sleep in this room where I ended up wheezing all night. They also lied to me that all the rooms were renovated at the same time and were the same. And it turns out that there were at least a few rooms available.

Pros: The hotel and general ambiance
Cons: We received a call from reception at 10.30 PM informing us that there was a complaint about noise. We were watching the Graham Norton show on the TV at what we thought was a reasonable sound level - the very facility I would have thought the TV was provided for. Of course in response we turned the volume down until we could barely hear the TV which spoiled our enjoyment of the programme and the remainder of the stay. It was disappointing that hotel staff didn't verify the complaint, but simply passed it on - not I think a sufficient level of service for the quality of hotel the Balmoral is. We take an annual trip as a treat from the stressful job of teaching - often in Edinburgh and have never been accused of this type of behaviour before and I think that we in future will revert to one of Edinburgh's other fine hotels as we want to reduce, not increase our stress.

The location is excellent - central but very quiet, being located down a side street. We walked or took the tram/bus everywhere during our visit. It's in walking distance to Holyrood and Arthur's Seat, the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street...and you've got the Surgeons Hall Museums right on your doorstep! We enjoyed a lovely short break here and would definitely stay again.

There was a safe in the room at a decent height for using it and u didn’t have to pay extra for it. It had a walk in shower and a bath. They gave u 2 half litre bottles of water complimentary. Mini bar,tea and coffee making facilities and 2 usb points at my side of the bed. Face cloths and plenty towels. Liked how nobody could go to the residential parts of the hotel unless they were staying there as you had to scan your room card before the lift would move and when u got to your room the lights would be on for you. It has a beautiful pool and spa

The wash hand basin plug didn’t stop the water going away so u had to leave tap running all the time while having a shave to keep the basin filled vewith water. The breakfast was very expensive either £18 for continental or £22 for the full cooked breakfast I realise its a 5 star hotel but I still think this is a bit steep. The spa entry is a bit expensive for guests at £35 each

Cons: Bedroom was irritating. Numerous lightbulbs flickered. There was a sewer smell in the room when we arrived. There was air leakage at our window which caused cold draughts all night and meant we heard everything going on in the service yard below which disturbed my sleep. The heating/ air system was poor and the room was either too stiff or cold and I had to keep getting up to change the controls. Hotel was very quiet too, why they gave us this room was strange or thoughtless.

Cons: It was what we expected. However, I think we heard only one Scottish accent among the staff. In Scotland's capital a Scottish accent – i.e. Gleneagles Hotel – would be an added attraction. We heard an American asking to hear a Scots voice. There were none at least on duty.

Cons: Didn’t get a great nights sleep either night, just couldn’t get comfortable and happy medium with the pillows. During the night also had to switch the aircon unit off it was that noisy. Toilet flush was also similar to that on an aircraft so no matter who flushed their loo, you could hear it.

2. Website advertised kids eat free. However, when we ordered meals for the kids via room service, we were told it’s not free. Extremely deceptive and off putting of brand.
3. I emailed the hotel 1 week in advance of 4-day stay and asked for milk, orange juice, and water in room stocked and included room mini fridge. Email from customer service acknowledged request and even confirmed we still wanted wine and beer - a nice catch! However, when we arrived, we were informed juice and milk not included. False service promise should’ve not been made.
Room service food was Not worth price (pizza, burger, and kids chicken meal were only ok but far more expensive than eaterery options all around).

The staff were really friendly and helpful. The room was lovely and the bed was possibly the most comfortable I have ever stayed in!

I travel alot internationally and truthfully feel that this was one of the best hotel experiences I've had in my life. Being that I do travel alot, it means the world when you can sleep peacefully in extreme comfort. From arrival to departure the George was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend it and will return there when in Edinburgh. A gentleman named " Willy" was a gem, very helpful. Thank You.

Cons: There is such a huge variety of unusual rooms that is was frankly difficult to figure out what kind of room we were in and where we might like to move. We loved our first room--a King Firth of Forth view room--the size was great and the view was awesome, but it was not air conditioned and we had to keep the windows open. This would be fine if the glass recycling center for the whole neighborhood was not below our windows. Glass was dumped all night, every night. Not conducive to sleep. So we moved to a room with A/C, but it did not have WIFI. Then we moved again to a room with A/C and WIFI and it was very, very small. But that is where we stayed. The Inter-Continental recently bought this property and they have work ahead of them to make sure that all rooms have A/C and WIFI. The location is great and the staff is great!

For the value of money we paid I wouldn’t stay again, I though it was going more spacious that what it was. We had to wait till after 3 to check in which is fine as it stated you can’t check in till 3 but 3.20 came and we still had no phone call, when we asked at reception if our room was ready they handed over the key?

All the staff were exceptional friendly, always smiling and trying to help all guests. Special thanks to Mrs. Catherine, she made our stay awesome from checking in until leaving the hotel. She was always asking us if we need anything! She is gorgeous !! Definitely, will come back to the hotel when I am back to Edinburgh.

Generally big hotel are a bit impersonal but here every one is looking after guests well being and answer swiftly to requests. Highly recommend also the hotel restaurant Grazing by Marc Greenaway, compliments on the delicious menus twisting traditional meals in a very tasty way! Super kind waiters as well (the lady with glasses and the dynamic young man!)

Cons: I found the copious and complicated instructions for using the kitchen equipment rather overwhelming and I did not use some, as I wanted a break! The management could be more environmentally friendly if they asked residents whether they wanted towels changed ( by putting them in the bath/ shower rather than on the towel rail). I felt they changed when hardly used, and I LIKE TO BE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY.

He was rather wobbly so asked the barmaid if she would put his pint on a table to save him spilling it . She refused and said it would cost an extra £5 for her to do it. We had had such good and helpful service from the rest of the staff it came as a shock.

Cons: The room was very cold (heater not turned on and no instructions as to how to operate it). No extra blankets were provided so we has a sleepless cold night. The phone to contact the staff in the middle of the night was not functioning either. The safe for the storage of valuables did not have any locking mechanisms. Very disappointing due to the above concerns. Definitely not value for money.

Yet, being in the Quartermile there is virtually no car traffic so it is very quiet. This is my second stay and compared to other well known hotel chains this is excellent value. Highly recommended!

Cons: Our room wasn't cleaned on our second day. When I sent a WhatsApp message (they don't use telephones in this hotel) a cleaner was sent but it was too late and not convenient as we were getting ready to go out. We did get a £10 voucher to use in the bar as an apology. The walls are so thin that when somebody walked past our room the bed shook! The hot items on the breakfast buffet were lukewarm and the orange juice ran out on the second morning.

Cons: Upon arrival we were greeted by a member of staff, who first could not find our booking and was adamant we hadn't booked. I am not fussed by this but her English was very poor and she was getting frustrated with us as we were telling her we were certain we had booked a room. I then showed her my email reservation which cleared that up. The total for the room was £365 for 3 nights. The woman then asked said to us the room would be £50, we then mentioned this wasn't right it was £365 on booking.com. She then went to her i-pad across the reception which was packed and there wasn't a proper desk either everyone was everywhere. She then came back and said the room was £115, again we had to correct her and show the email confirmation. She then went back to her ipad returned and finally agreed that we had to pay £365. We were paying cash DO NOT DO THIS pay by card always. My friend and I both counted out in front of her £182.50 to the exact figure. She then took the money went back to the small desk in the wall, again it was very crowded so we couldn't see her, returned and said we were £20 short! I then asked her to give us the money back to count it out again, she returned to the desk and brought the money back excluding the change of the £2.50 each which she tried to charge us for again by saying "you are actual £25 short" both my friend and I are not very confrontational people, we were also soaked, annoyed and just wanted to get to the room. So we paid the extra £20 after being firm in saying she hadn't brought the change of the £2.50 each back over and said we would be leaving a bad review to which she just turned away without giving us our keycard or telling us which room and were to go. We then had to approach her again and ask for this, she then pointed to the elevator and said that way? We then guessed we were on the 4th floor due to the number BUT you couldnt get to the 4th floor by simply pressing 4 in the elevator.

Cons: Very loud and noisy by a bar across the street until 3am from friday to saturday. (till 5 a.m. from saturday to sunday we learned) We couldn't sleep till the nois stopped. Staff said this is almost every weekend and they can't do anything about it. We got the offer to change the rooms but it was our last night at the hotel. Better ask for rooms that do not go out on the street. No possibility to open the window. Better ventilation for the bathroom would be good. Room could be a bit cleaner.

Hotel layout was awkward so much so that we could not use my wife's mobility scooter and the hotel did not have a wheelchair for use by guests. Accessible bathroom was not ideal, no toilet room dispenser, toilet roll was on the cistern behind the toilet

Pros: This is a budget hostel, so it would be unfair to expect a five star hotel. And for the price I thought it was excellent. The location is perfect, the room clean and perfectly adequate with a nice en-suite shower room. The staff were super friendly and helpful - I left my Kindle behind somehow and they had kept it safe for me when I went to ask if they had seen it. There is a lift, which helped me as I had a hip problem at the time, and there is a storage room where you can leave your luggage before or after you check in/out. If you want you can pay for a secure locker, but the room is only occessed by means of a key for residents only.

Pros: I liked the beds. The curtains are a good idea. The rungs of the ladder have a square cross-section. A square cross-section means a flat surface to step on, which is far more comfortable than a round one. The mattress was comfortable. No innerspring mattresses in this hostel. The toilet and the shower are separated from one another.

Cons: The hostel is quite noisy with young people being a bit exuberant in the early hours, but this was not a great problem for me as I can sleep like a log anywhere. The room was small for three, with no chairs or TV but again that didn't bother me as I was there on my own (my friends couldn't come after all). Cons: I missed a place to hang my jacket. Space was available. No ventilation in the shower and the toilet, only a few hooks to hang your towel instead of a bar, separated taps for hot and cold water (a plug for the sink was at hand, however), a locker would have been nice, not a single electrical socket in the room.
