Hungary entry details and exceptions

Foreign nationals who will enter Hungary will be authorized by the Hungarian police agency provided that they have equitable grounds. The application to enter Hungary may be submitted only by electronic means using the relevant electronic forms in Hungarian or English. The original copy of the submitted document must be presented upon entry to the territory of Hungary.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Visitors from South Africa must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) test taken 72 hours before departing to Hungary.

Details and exceptions
Travelers are required to provide two (2) negative test results with at least 48 hours between them to avoid 10-day quarantine.
Quarantine requirements

Visitors from South Africa will need to quarantine for 14 days upon entering Hungary.

Details and exceptions
Due to the new variant of COVID-19, Hungarians arriving from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe or who visited these countries in the two weeks prior to returning home will have to quarantine for a period of fourteen (14) days in a designated or official home quarantine facility.
Permitted entry of foreign nationals from the aforementioned countries are required to quarantine for a full fourteen (14) days even if they produce a negative PCR test.
Hungarians returning from abroad other than the previously stated countries must go into quarantine for ten (10) days, or until they can present two negative tests performed two days apart.

Not applicable for Hungarian citizens, Travelers entitled for permanent residence in Hungary and Travellers who have a valid residence permit issued by the Aliens Police Authority. Relevant documents must be presented.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Travellers returning from Hungary must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) test taken 72 hours before departure to South Africa.

Details and exceptions
traveler with no proof of a negative COVID-19 test result will be required to do an antigen test on arrival at his or her own cost and if positive for COVID-19, he or she will be required to isolate at their own cost, for a period of 10 days.
Children under the age of 5 are exempt from presenting a COVID-19 test.
Quarantine requirements

Visitors returning from Hungary are not required to quarantine upon entering South Africa.

Details and exceptions
Travelers who display any COVID-19–related symptoms must be tested on arrival. In the event that the result of the COVID-19 test is positive, they will be required to quarantine for 10 days. The cost of testing and quarantine will be on the travelers' expense.
