Jesmond Dene House - Newcastle upon Tyne - Building
5
9,2 Excellent (1 066 reviews)
R2 249+
Overview Reviews
Jesmond Dene House is a small, 4 AA red star privately-owned boutique-style hotel with 40 bedrooms that sits nestled within the wooded valley of Jesmond Dene. A country hotel setting yet only minutes from the suburb of Jesmond or bustle of Newcastle city centre and the quayside. The original house was Georgian, designed for a local doctor in 1822 by John Dobson who was responsible for many of Newcastles handsome streets. It was then developed in the late 19th century for Sir Andrew Noble, business partner to Lord Armstrong, the great Victorian inventor and engineer. The Grade II-Listed Arts and Crafts mansion was extended and enhanced until it was bought by Newcastle City Council in 1933. For the next 65 years, it had various uses, including being used as a college, Civil Defence establishment, seminary, and as a residential school. The building was in a very bad derelict state when it was bought, restored and then opened as a hotel in 2005. In addition to the bedrooms there is a 3 AA Rosette restaurant offering a selection of daily menu options ranging from breakfast and afternoon tea to A la carte dinner or Sunday lunch. Functions, weddings and business events can also be accommodated in a choice of four private rooms including the Great Hall, a spectacular, double-height room catering for up to 100 guests and with oak and silk wall panelling, Gothic windows, carved inglenook fireplace and minstrels gallery. The aim of the hotel, since opening, is to provide the highest levels of service, hospitality and food for both business and leisure guests, using local produce and suppliers where possible.

3,0 Mediocre
Pros: Room was a decent size but that was because was a disabled room which I did not request.
Cons: Room was cold because the bathroom window had been left open. The television would only get Sky sports due to a fault and they said that they were waiting for the engineer to come to retune. Breakfast was not included and for the room price I would have expected it to be. Continental breakfast was £14 which seemed very expensive for a few pastries and Jam

Cons: Only a minor criticism - two car parks but both almost full with visiting diners when we arrived mid-evening. Cons: The names on doors was confusing when we were asked which room we where in..
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Great location and atmosphere
Cons: Car park charge was a bit steep!
8,0 Excellent
Pros: I stayed for 8 days in a standard double room and 3 days in a superior double room. Both rooms were clean, tidy, quiet and comfortable. The superior room was outstanding. Staff were polite, helpful and prompt. The food in the bistro is excellent and also reasonably good value for money. The fish (cod, sole and kippers) were first-rate. The baths are enormous (reclaimed Victorian, I imagine) and wonderfully comfortable.
Cons: I'm a clean freak, so limescale and the odd spot of mould around bathroom and shower taps rankled with me. This could easily be fixed with limescale remover and a little brush every now and then. Pillows and mattresses were acceptable, but could have been better. One young, pushy waiter had a habit of engaging people in conversation about their choices of wine when they, and I, quite obviously would have preferred to have been left alone. Sometimes less is more.

Pros: Everything. Interesting building, very comfortable room; helpful staff; super food. We really enjoyed our stay.
Cons: Nothing!

Pros: Fantastic property lovey large comfortable room and bed very quiet and peaceful
Cons: Would have loved a bath as the bathroom was huge, also wasn’t aware from bookings that only continental breakfast but probably me not reading the small print
10,0 Excellent
Pros: I thought the people running the hotel were very friendly, the room was dressed period correct with the 4 poster bed. Loads of tea and coffee on hand. A little tricky to find in the daylight, but driving up to the electric gates makes you feel special before the experience even started. I would love to go back in the summer as the grounds I think would be spectacular
Cons: Breakfast was quite simple, it would have been nice to have a small choice of meats and cheese slices to go with the toast, or maybe bagel, but that is more because I am not a cereal fan.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Really great atmosphere, cosy, clean, generously sized room. Friendly and welcoming staff. Convenient location, beautiful grounds. A good mixture of being an easy journey into the city and feeling as though you are in the countryside. Brilliant selection on the continental breakfast.
Cons: Nothing! The only small downside was not knowing where the gym was, but went for a walk along the gorgeous Keelmans way which is just a couple of minutes walk from the hotel instead.

Cons: Nothing really
5,4 Okay
Cons: £92 for breakfast which I believed was included, both the hotel and get a room blamed each other and left the customer in the dark. We avoided breakfast in the hotel and the hotel still tried to charge for it Suite had a standard double bed rather than a king or queen Hotel Bar tries to move guests around in Bar once settled at a table claiming tables not marked as reserved were reserved Generally a bad experience
10,0 Excellent
Pros: I booked a room for my son and his new wife for the night they got married , I sent a message to the hotel beforehand to tell them they were newlyweds and if possible to give them a little bit of special treatment. They gave them a fabulous room overlooking the river and bridges . They scattered petals on the bed and left them a bottle of chilled bubbly ! Absolutely amazing hospitality. They were thrilled with their surprise. They thoroughly enjoyed their stay there and the delicious breakfast next morning . So Thank you so much Malmaison Newcastle for this lovely gesture .

Pros: Marc on reception was very helpful
7,0 Good
Pros: Hotel tired in comparison with Holiday Inn Express I have previously stated in (Bristol). Dining room good; breakfasts ok- no reception for tv - hotel staff knew and did not mention on check in; when I reported it they said it didn’t work in many if the rooms! The following day the gentleman in charge remedied it by replacing the TV. It was unacceptable that they withheld the information until I reported it!
Cons: I have just commented in that - but it was a little shabby and not up to the standard I expect from the Holiday Inn group / I was disappointed

7,4 Good
Pros: Very close to the airport
Cons: That my 05:15 wake up call was actually made at 03:15!
5,4 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: Shower dirty, poor room service and TV not working
8,0 Excellent
Pros: For a 2 day business trip, the hotel was perfectly located next to the airport! The hotel was clean and had a premium feel to it. The food options were great too and I had a lovely meal. The room was nice and big and the facilities were spot on.
Cons: The reason for scoring the hotel down a little is due to 2 things which affected my sleep. 1) there was an air vent in my room which was really noisy and even without the fans on, it made a lot of noise. 2) the pillows were really soft. I personally like firmer pillows so it would have been good to have had the option.
4,0 Okay
Pros: The room was warm and I didn’t hear ant planes. The cookie was good. The night porter was very polite and listened to my comments. I have stayed here before and was very satisfied.
Cons: The main receptionist was brusque almost to the point of rudeness. Her colleague later tried to redeem the situation. In the bathroom the shower screen did not fit properly so water went all over the floor. When I tried to stop it the sealer fell off. One of the towels had black marks on it, not sure if it had been cleaned properly. The attitude of the receptionist on my arrival created an air of disappointment for me and may have caused minor irritations to seem much bigger.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: 3 minutes walk from the airport
10,0 Excellent
Pros: It was just a 3 minute walk to the airport! The staff were very friendly. Our room was large and clean and the bed was so soft. The bathroom is great with a rain can shower over top. You even get a refrigerator. The gym was nice too and empty on a Sunday.
Cons: I wish there was an outlet on both sides of the bed.
4,2 Okay
Pros: There’s wasn’t very meany things good about the hotel except the room service was quick
Cons: Before we went to the hotel I called twice to double check I would have a bath in my room as I paid extra for they says yes no problem We arrived very nice staff helped us Got to the room no bath called they sorted it First initial veiws on the hotel was it looked like it was under major renovation all the glass was soo dirty and dusty the chairs in the Columbus bar was very dusty got to our room . Room was nice nice veiw to the airport bathroom good bed was very uncomfortable didn’t get no sleep pillows were shocking Ordered room service It came the plate metal covers were sooooo stained and dirty The glass was not clean at all I wish I took pictures of it all

Cons: Just a niggly little thing, the loo roll on the holder just had 2 sheets of paper on it before it ended. There was more paper in the bathroom but I do thing a hotel of this standard should be looking at little things like this! As I say a niggly little thing, it could be just me

We’re near the railway station, Grainger Market, and Sage Gateshead Arts Centre, and our team is passionate about sharing the best of our neighborhood’s nightlife, theatre and art scene.

Pros: Didn't use the breakfast, easy drive to airport. I have stayed here before and would definitely use again.
Cons: Car park layout is a bit confusing, we arrived at night and it looked full, you have to nearly drive back out of the barrier before you access the car park round the back
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast , Lunch and Dinner was available at any time and was lovely Bar with a Starbucks Swimming pool open for long hours
Cons: Location didn’t have a bus stop have to walk 10/15 mins to a bus stop

Pros: Pool & friendly staff
Cons: All ok
8,3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is spotlessly clean everywhere I looked The room is lovely Bathroom is nice Staff are over polite at times! Lovely beers and some nice wines Toliet roll love the folds Bathroom sewing kit, hair net, nail file etc.
Cons: The buffet breakfast, to much food is cook at once, some things go dry under heat lamps. Not worth the money in my opinion and a 4* hotel should be doing a lot better. Draft through the windows makes the room hot in one place and chilly in anouther. Car park lights on all night and it's like a light house light shining in the window with curtains closed. Please turn some off or redirect them! The room, the tv needs to be more modern so I could stream on it from my cell phone! Some wines are pricey !
