The drying room was a bonus and there were numerous tools available to make repairs. The rooms were immaculate with excellent space and hot showers. USB ports were also available on our bunk beds

Laurel House - Penrith - Bedroom
5
9,7 Excellent (63 reviews)
R1 907+
Overview Reviews
Visitors to Penrith will find that the Laurel House is a fantastic accommodation choice. When guests have some time on their hands they can make use of the onsite facilities. For those driving themselves, parking is provided on site.
5,8 Okay
Pros: Large bed, large breakfast, good location
Cons: Broken shower that couldn’t be used as it was scalding only (owners blamed us for breaking it!), shower screen that didn’t fit properly so it kept swinging open every time we closed it (owners said we didn’t close it properly!), loose hairs scattering the bathroom on arrival (owners said they were ours even though we had just arrived and not used anything!). Owners do not take any criticism at all which is not good as they should use it to improve rather than pass blame.
10,0 Excellent

8,0 Excellent
Pros: The amazingly warm welcome, company and gorgeous food. The lovely house and super comfortable bed. There is nothing that can be faulted. A very unique place!
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Our stay at Laurel House was without doubt the best weekend break we have ever had in many years. Jeff and Alex were the most attentive, caring proprietors one could wish for. We felt so much a part of the home, particularly so, on our Sunday morning breakfast, which we shared, and enjoyed, with a Scottish couple, and two Japanese archaeology students. A really "international breakfast". Jeff and Alex's attention to their guests, ensuring they had wonderfully comfortable beds, and quite incredible breakfasts, is what they are all about. They have based their provision on what they would want - they have excelled! We will be back within the next month or so, and have already recommended "Laurel House" to our friends.
Cons: Going home!
7,7 Good
Pros: Alex & Jeff were very friendly and accommodating. My fiance and I had to get up very early the following day and Alex & Jeff had no problem serving us breakfast at a much earlier time. We were also able to return to the hotel after our excursion to shower and dress before heading leaving. Jeff's home made bread at breakfast and the home made preserves were a lovely addition to an absolutley lovely, peaceful and relaxing stay.
Cons: There was nothing we did not like or enjoy about the hotel.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: what a fantastic hotel, character, comfort, great food and superb staff. can't reccomend enough!
Cons: nothing!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: When we arrived at our destination, after what seemed like ages through narrow country lanes, we were in awe of the location and views, breathtaking. The hotel itself was very quirky, furnished in 1930's decor, which I loved, I kept thinking Miss Marple would totter in, very atmospheric, it squeaked and groaned all over the place, very comforting. Our bedroom was located at the back of the property, however, if you are planning to stay in your room for some length of time, I would recommend a front view. Dinner and breakfast was excellent, very good choices and cooked well, good wine list too. Staff were very helpful, chatty and knowledgeable. Please note that dogs are welcome in room, and a fair few guests had them. It also gets quite busy with 'proper walkers' but all adds to ambiance, nothing worse than an empty hotel.
Cons: We didn't dislike anything in particular, some areas are a little tired, and we could hear some murmurings around 2/3am in the morning, from someones room I believe, I wouldn't liked to have bee next to it, but I think the couple who checked out before us did mention the 'thin walls' to reception. However it is rare to find a totally silent hotel.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location and beautiful friendly staff!
Cons: The stairs to the room
10,0 Excellent
Pros: This place is a true gem, the view of the lake is breathtaking and everything was perfect. Great dinner and breakfast. Nice bar to get cocktail/tea pre/post dinner. Perfect for couples, it's an amazing romantic getaway.
Cons: I actually enjoyed it, but there is no phone service anywhere, and the wifi is only in the bar area.

Pros: Well presented and friendly staff, good menu for the bar and lounge, secluded location.

7,0 Good
Pros: The food at the resturant was very good as well as the hotel accomadation being of a high standard.
Cons: Not all Television channels available (this was not a problem for us, as senery was so lovely we didn't need TV)
5,6 Okay
Pros: fantastic position, loved the balcony overlooking the fells and the reservoir, bed was cosy and the public rooms and terrace all really good features: good breakfast
Cons: Disliked all the signs eg re bathwater economy ( bit like a boarding house!): we were sorry there was no shower for those not in ensuite rooms, also no washbasins in the public lavatory rooms: had trouble washing or drying my hair in provided facilities ( tried in bath then washbasin, then trying to dry it with the hand dryer was awkward): there was no soap in the public bathroom sinks and they were rather draughty bathrooms: it was a great pity bar meals stopped at 6.30pm esp as good choice and menu: we didn`t want the evening meal and in the end went out to local village Bampton for a meal
6,0 Good
Pros: the ideal sutiation in a very pecefull area

Pros: Plenty of space to park, nice quite location outside of the town. Rooms were a great size. Cons: Could only get wifi on phone and not tablet but I didnt mention it so not given opportunity to correct.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Warm atmosphere with up-to-date decor in an old building
4,0 Okay
Pros: Room clean Location for motorway good.
Cons: Room very very small. Just room for the bed and my bag on the floor. Bathroom down the corridor, not good. Towelling robe to wear to the bathroom was fleece, uncomfortable. Breakfast only average although fresh brewed coffee and fresh raspberries with blueberries saved the day. Would have been nice if owner or family member was there to greet guests rather than leave an envelope with keys in the porch. £55 too much for this room.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Pleasant location and lovely host.
Cons: Rear single room near to M6 motorway

Pros: Beautiful hotel and location
7,1 Good
Pros: The garden and location down by the lake. But my tiny single room was very poor value

Cons: Room in need of minor refresh. Radiators not effective.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Everything was excellent
9,2 Excellent
Pros: LOCATION. ROOM WITH A VIEW. FOOD WAS GOOD.
Cons: SUGGEST INCREASE PRICE RATHER THAN ASK FOR TIPS WHEN CHECKING OUT. IF STAFF NEED TIPS PAY THEM A BIT MORE.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Superb location looking out across the water. Our room (in the Lodge) was fantastic with a separate small lounge area and plenty of space in the bedroom. Evening meal was excellent.
Cons: Not a complaint, more of an observation. The Lodge is a 2 minute walk from the main hotel and it was raining while we were there so it would be useful to have some umbrellas available for the guests to use.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Tucked away in a beautiful location , very well kept , with lovely decor and lovely staff
Cons: The only think was that there were plenty of sockets and plenty of mirrors but not in the same place for me to dry my hair in front off
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Our room and the view of the lake were unrivalled, a memorable stay.
7,5 Good
Pros: Sharrow Bay Hotel is in a superb location alongside Ullswater with beautiful gardens leading down to the lake. We had the Harmony room which has French windows opening up to the gardens and a wide view of the lake. The room itself was spacious and well furnished. We had dinner and breakfast and the quality of the food lived up to its high reputation. We had tables by the window, again with great views over the lake.
Cons: The service in the restaurant did not quite meet our expectations. For example, on our first night we ordered the taster menu at dinner with a flight of wines and the wines did not arrive until the after the second course. The sommelier seemed to be working from a script when describing the wines and was a little stuck when quizzed further. On the second night when we had the a la carte menu we had to repeatedly ask for the wine to be poured. These are little things but not what one would expect from a hotel of this calibre.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: excellent breakfast - large selection - location was quiet, with excellent views - possibly remote, one hour from most of the listed Lake District "go to" places.
Cons: 99%perfect - two more halogen ceiling lights in the bathroom would have given better lighting
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Sharrow Bay Country House enjoys magnificent views across the water to faraway hills
Cons: The main access road to the hotel crosses a bridge that is being rebuilt requiring a significant and frustrating detour to get to the hotel

7,9 Good
Pros: The bed was very comfortable, the host very friendly the location beautiful views and the breakfast great.

Pros: The room I stayed in suprised me as well it was comfortable and cosy. The host was very friendly and respected, any queries easily to be answered by him. Easy acess to the main road so great for traveling to next town or city.
Cons: N/a. Really couldn't think what was wrong with my stay.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We were both surprised at the lovely reception we had at the property - a good cuppa after a long journey was just what we needed. The position of the property makes it easy to travel almost anywhere and having a pub (serves great meals!) across the road was a real bonus. Of the many places we've stayed recently, this one had the best bed yet, very comfortable, and large. Cooked breakfasts are superb and prepared exactly as you require, cereals are there if you want them. Unfortunately we had to cut our stay short, yet our host was most understanding and helpful about the booking, even when we said he need not refund our unused days. Without doubt the best B&B we've ever stayed at.
Cons: Nothing.
7,9 Good
Pros: The location was ideal for where I was meeting up with friends. Dean the proprietor was very helpful with any questions I had about the area. Food was excellent.
Cons: Room was a little tired and could do with a updating. Towels needed renewing. Not a lot of storage and no hooks in the shower room.

5,0 Okay
Pros: Not much. Comfy bed. Overpriced.
Cons: Moved from the first room as I wasn’t paying that much for a premier inn looking room I could have paid half the price for. Paid an extra £20 making it £155 for one night. Then in our new room the electrics go off whilst getting ready, my partner told reception and told us they would be straight up, 20 minutes later sat in the dark, he went back down to reception to find them sat down. We were then told to move all of our things using our phone torches as it was dark and go to a room which wasn’t ideal. By this point the restaurant had stopped serving food and no restaurants around.

5,0 Okay
Pros: the spa facilities were excellent and the staff were very helpfull and good parking facilities.
Cons: I thought £145 for room only was expensive and that the bedroom and bathroom should be updated for that sort of money. Also the breakfast service could be more efficient

Pros: Nice, clean, good quality hotel with good facilities including, of course, the Pool and Spa. Kids room with Wii, PS2, Pool table, Air Hockey and boarad games was a nice addition. The room was very well appointed with a very high quality bathroom and nice furnishings. TV had a number of Sky channels. Overall a very nice place to stay.
Cons: Room was a little noisy, not so much in the night but certainly in the morning when people were in the corridor outside. I wouldn't let this put me off returning though.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice welcome and all the staff tried very hard to make the stop enjoyable. Chap who sorted our bikes into the store was excellent and smiled away even in the rain. Loved the place and will be back again. Perfect start to our long weekend away. Spar very good and kids loved the games room.
Cons: Think some of the meals were too expensive - ended up eating out as young family of four - too much for a short break.

7,5 Good
Pros: Staff were lovely and friendly and couldn’t do enough for guests. The actual room was lovely and clean and just as expected. The general stay was sufficient for what I was staying for, the staff made it.
Cons: I stayed on a Friday night were the noise from drinkers outside was so loud, the windows didn’t really help with any noise cancelling. The curtains were broken so they were letting in all the street lights from outside, and I could hear every cream from next door. As I was staying here for work and had to be up at 5am it was a nightmare nights sleep for me (I managed to drift off at 3am and normally sleep through anything), so if it wasn’t for the lovely staff it wouldn’t be a good review!

Pros: The views from the property is absolutely breathtaking! Really enjoyed going for walks in the surroundings. It is clean, comfortable and very well managed. All in all a very good place for a getaway.
Cons: Property is very hard to reach by foot. I would not even recommend driving there since the road leading to it is narrow with loose surface making it dangerous. Almost an hour trek uphill from the nearest bus stop at Glenridding. Make sure you are wearing proper trekking shoes and dressed to beat the weather.

Pros: All the staff were friendly and helpful. Cosy lounge with real fire. Good value.
Cons: The room we were in was adequate but basic. From what we could see, the other rooms had more space and better decoration. The cooked breakfast was good but some fruit would have been welcome.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Made to feel welcome, lovely room, good value for money. Nice location.
Cons: Meals were a bit pricey. But having said that, it was lovely.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely comfortable place, very warm and homely. Fantastic meal in the evening restaurant and fantastic full English breakfast. Great value for money. We will definitely stay here if traveling in this direction again.
7,9 Good
Pros: Friendly staff. Good restaurant in the inn. Dog friendly. Location was good being only a few minutes from the M6 but far enough into the Lakes that you felt it was a real break. We enjoyed a lovely walk at the Airaforce waterfalls and out onto the hills above - great views of Ullswater.
Cons: The room and bathroom needed a bit of refreshing as did the bar area, but I gathered the owners are relatively new and are working on this. It would have been helpful to mention that dogs are only welcome in the bar area before we got there.

9,2 Excellent
Pros: The room was great and the bed very comfortable, while the location is superb and surrounded by rolling countryside, woodland and the river Eden
Cons: Some of the fixtures and fittings in the bathroom are a little worn and could use some attention to bring up to date. In addition, the shower attachments need some sort of instructions in order to avoid any uncertainty for residents.
4,0 Okay
Pros: The village of Edenhall was pretty and as described.
Cons: First room offered had below standard bathroom, black mould round bath sealant, cracked bath panel and grubby plastic shower curtain. Second room offered had a recently tiled and decorated bathroom. The bedroom and bed were small, the wardrobe, next to the bed, had no doors and displayed ironing board, iron, spare blanket and pillows. The carpet was fairly new but had a very large stain between door and bathroom as though someone had been violently sick at some stage. The curtains had come off some of the hooks and the window wouldn't stay open. No chair or surfaces to put anything on as the only small "dressing table" was taken up with tea and coffee tray. Nothing like the photos.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The restaurant has been updated and the menu provides a variety of hearty and well cooked dishes. Breakfast is tasty using local produce where appropriate and service is with a smile.
Cons: My only complaint is that the radiator in my room seemed unable to be switched off although this might have been my inability to work out how.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The host couldn't have been more helpful. They offered to assist with washing down our dirty cycling bikes after the heavy rain. They also offered to dry our wet gear. The hotel was very comfortable and spotless with a great menu for supper. The staff really care that guests are enjoying their stay.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: We were a group ofvwet and cold cyclists. Superbly helpful when we arrived without bags because one of our group was at the hospital with a broken ankle.
7,0 Good
Pros: Lovely room and new, modern bathroom
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Were able to serve dinner late as arrived just a kitchen about to close. Great breakfast.
Cons: The shower head in room 23 needs fixed as not sitting properly. Soap dispenser in shower in awkward position too close to shower and would be better positioned on same wall as shower as has sharp corners to it which bump against while showering. Also narrowness of bathroom meant toilet roll holder could bump into and that had square sharp ended too. Better to have round edges.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Room good although heater in bathroom did not seem to work. Very good meal and service, breakfast excellent choices
Cons: Bathroom could have been better.
