Absolute nightmarePros:Nothing at all. They were unprofessional, did not care about my situation, offered no help, and should be out of business.Cons:I made a reservation with payless rental in Baltimore maryland through Hotwire. According to the reservation ( #11986177US0) my wife was supposed to pick up a standard size car at their Baltimore Washington Intl., BWI 7426 New Ridge Road Hanover, MD 21076 location. When she got there from Tampa, she was told that the reservation had been cancelled. No other explanation, no attempt to help her find another vehicle, simply your reservation was cancelled and we don't have a car for you. She called me and was almost in tears, so I spoke with the sale person (Roman) who said the same thing, Sorry, you reservation was cancelled, and we have other other cars available for you. No explanation as to WHO cancelled it. I then called hotwire, 3 times, each time I was on hold for 20 minutes, And each time they dropped the call. They kept telling me that they did not cancel the reservation and told me to call back Payless. I explained to them that I had called them back, they said that it was cancelled and they offered no explanation as to why. I asked to speak to a supervisor at Hotwire, and was put on hold yet again. And of course after 15 more minutes on hold, they dropped my call and disconnected. I absolutely hate Hotwire and will never rent another car from Payless even if they were free. I got no help from either company, no one has ever attempted to contact me and rectify the situation, or apologize or anything. I can not say anything good about either company and wish they both would go bankrupt.Reviewed Dec 17 2019

Bare minimum in customer service -- not much of aPros:The car was brand new!Cons:Signage at BWI specifically for Payless is terrible, especially for returns. Not their fault, but the employees don't make any effort to make the rest of the process any easier once you've located them. When we parked one lane over in the parking garage due to lack of visible signage compared to all the other car rental companies, it turned out to be a one way lane and another customer parked us in. The employee told me I'd have to go move it even when I explained I was parked in, and I guess if we hadn't lucked out and had the car behind me move itself out, I would have had to roam the parking garage looking for someone walking away and hope it was them. When I came back and there was a line, I let her know we'd moved the car and wanted to know if there was anything else needed. She said "you'll have to wait to be checked out, these customers were here ahead of you," extremely unsympathetically. Let me add that as a Customer Service Manager myself, the phrase "you'll have to" is taboo with my team because the underlying tone it conveys is "not my problem / I won't help." Heard it over, and over, and over again with Payless. The bare minimum and standardized "sorry for your inconvenience" script on a loop is what we experienced for customer service -- which would be tolerable if we actually had gotten any sort of deal on the car itself. Rates aren't that different from other services and we will definitely NOT be renting with Payless again due to the hassle.Reviewed May 11 2016

Car Not AvailableCons:I had a car reserved for 10, showed up at 11:15, so you would think the car would be there no problem, particularly as the reservation process commits you no matter if you take the car or not. Rep informs me that they have only truck available, I say no good I have my wife, 11 month daughter and baggage. Rep lets me know they are bringing cars, should only be 5-10 minutes. I ask if they are waiting on returns or are they bringing cars from another location? Rep tells me cars are coming from another location. 20 minutes later I'm still waiting and I hear another rep say they are waiting for returns. At this point I'm already way late and annoyed that I was lied to, so I go to Alamo and get a car on the spot. Cost me twice as much, but what good is a rental with no car that you have to wait all day for. As I was leaving the rental area 40 minutes after the time arrived, the people who were there before me waiting for cars were still waiting for cars. Do yourself a favor and spend a couple of extra bucks on a reputable company so you don't get gouged on a same day rental when these folks can't deliver.Reviewed May 17 2016

Pros:great serviceCons:I rented a small economy car, but what I got was a 500 hp muscle car better suited for the race track than my intended purpose. Three women on separate occasions (total strangers) sought me out to complement my car, and chat. The car looked great, sounded even better, but got less than 10 miles/gallon rather than my planned 40+ mpg, adding so much excess cost to the rental such that it was no longer a good deal. Guys like me with Medicare cards don't need or appreciate such things. Cons:The customer service was terrible. They were talking poorly about the customers who checked out prior to me. They were more interested in their private conversations. The exterior of the car was filthy, mud and dirt from snow storm the week prior. When I asked about the condition of the car I was told the car wash was broken. The vehicles of other rental companies were very clean and presentable. This was our second time using Payless and will be the last! I would rather pay more than use a company that does not take pride in the services they provide.Reviewed Feb 5 2016

Cons:We showed up for our reservation only to be greeted by a sign at the counter saying “ no cars available “. We had to scramble and rent from another company at twice the price. Pros:Nothing, reserved car week earlier, got to the rental location and it was CLOSED! Sign read " No cars available"!!! WTF????? I will NEVER rent a car from them or their sister company Avis again.
