Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is one of three international airports serving the region. It’s 30 miles from Washington DC and 9 miles from Baltimore. It’s a very easy airport to connect with by car and very close to major highways taking you to various nearby cities and onward to other US destinations.
There are a number of petrol stations near the rental facility but not immediately on its campus. If you are approaching from the Paul T Pitcher Memorial Highway via New Ridge Road you will pass two stations just after you exit the highway. If you are coming off Metropolitan Boulevard you’ll find a petrol station east of the main entrance to the airport on Aviation Blvd. Refuel in one of these before you return your car.
Returning your car is very straightforward. On approach to the airport you will see signs for the car rental facility. Follow these and park in the car park there. Remove all your belongings and return to the car hire desks in the main building. Here you can exchange your keys and documents and, once the car is checked, you’ll be free to go. Horrible. I took an Uber to the airport to pickup my vehicle. I waited an hour in a long line and then told they ran out of vehicles. I returned home without the vehicle. Frustrating....

I had to wait over an hour for a car to come in even though I made my reservation days in advance. I was among many others trying to go somewhere and was delayed. Once I got a vehicle, it was good. Drop off was easy.

It was terrible. I arrived thanksgiving night and had reserved a car, a RAV4 for 7pm. I arrived and budget was closed and there was a sign that said go to Avis. At Avis the woman informed me that the car that I reserved was not available and all they had was either an EV or a huge pick up truck.

We got to the rental car depot and the lines at each rental company were 20-30 people long and no one was getting a car. In the hour we were there, 2 customers in total had been helped at Budget (which was manned by one person). Absolutely insane. Cancelled the reservation and had family drive an hour to come pick us up. How is this acceptable?

We went to rent our vehicle and did not know we had to use a Credit Card. We only had a debit card with us on trip. Alamo person at counter terrible. In addition we had an agreement for $1080 for week. Person at counter informed us additional $300 security deposit. Now $1380 for rental. We were stranded at airport. No transportation. Horrible experience with Alamo. We had to change our rental to return it to BWI . Not Jacksonville. DO NOT RENT FROM ALAMO!

Pros:

Very nice and courteous staff. The car was excellent, almost brand new, and drove great. The pick up and drop off were quick and easy.

Cons:

I did not receive any receipt or acknowledgement when I returned the vehicle. The car was checked in quickly but the agent said he would email the receipt and I had to call back the next day to request the receipt.

Poor for pick up. One employee at BWI airport desk. At times, 5-8 people in line. At one point, a customer returned his car rental to exchange for another one for some issue, breaking in front of line. Car not vacuumed upon pick up. No employees in sight to ask questions. I recommend Avis management have a sit down with BWI staff. Sooner than later.

The initial price offered by Kayak was 80 dollars. We ended up paying 160 dollars. The insurance offered by Kayak was not sufficient at Avis.

How Avis handles the ez pass for tolls relative to others is shameful. I thought the rental I had booked was competitive until getting to the counter and finding out it was an additional $25/day. When that is factored in it was possibly the most I have ever paid to rent a car. I will not be using Avis in the future.
