I rented a midsize suv such as the RAV 4. Alamo initially offered a small mitsubishi "suv" at the garage. I declined and they provided an "upgrade" to a chevy equinox...another compact suv nice car but one class lower than the midsize billed. Very nice staff, but that was wrong.

I didn't get to rent the car because after calling Alamo multiple times to confirm policies, I spent 30$ taking an Uber to the airport only to be told I had been given wrong information and they would not rent me the car. It nearly cost me a night of my vacation and I ultimately had to borrow a car at great inconvenience to a family member. Will never ever use Alamo again.

When I went to drop the car there was no clear instructions to drop the key into the drop box and park the car and go. It said go into the airport and talk to the budget counter personnel. It was 6 AM, the airport counter was closed. Luckily when I came back there was another customer dropping the car, she assured me and told me to drop the key in the drop box. I waited till she dropped her key and dropped mine and left. All these delayed my going in and missed the flight and waited for 12 hours to catch the next plane. These all could be avoided if they had clear instructions to drop the key in the drop box and park and go instead of directing to go inside to the budget counter in the airport. Very disappointed

The drop-off was fine. The Pick Up was extremely disappointing. We arrived at Reagan National and went to pick up our Hertz rental car. Once at the counter the representative (she was very professional) informed me there would be a 90 minute wait time to get our car. I explained to her that we arrived "on time" and also spoke to her manager - explaining that we flew in that morning because our daughter in law was having her baby that same morning and could they please see if these special circumstances would help facilitate our getting a car - they were both very polite but flatly said no, they could and would not. We had to wait.. So...After 45 minutes I spoke to the people who provided the keys to your customers at the Hertz pick up spot and explained our dilemma. They were quite empathetic and helped us immediately in obtaining a car after that. I feel your team at the counter could have tried harder to help us out when I explained our dilemma. Again they were very professional, just unwilling to be of assistance when we had to get to the hospital ASAP. The bottom line to Hertz is... Will we use Hertz again when we return to the DC area next month? Probably not due to the experience we just had.

Cons:

The car they initially rented to me was broken and required software updates. There were no tenants around to help. I received my second car over an hour later and was unhappy with it due to the car being uncomfortable and full of blind spots (it was different than what I rented as well -- and definitely not any sort of an upgrade or similar to what I rented). The second car they gave me had a bald tire and I experienced a blow out less than 300 feet from the garage door in the driveway leading to/from the rental location. And then they charged me for the blow out.

I was able to get a different call after all the warning lights on my first car came on.

Cons:

People working at the airport were not helpful at all; the payless call center foes not exist; no one gave me a copy of my contract after I left the airport to get my car; no one at avis or budget rental could find my contract - I had to drive to a special payless location to find someone who could look up my contract.

The cancellation policy was unclear when making the booking. It was unclear how to report the dents I located on the car before I drove away. I paid the DAILY rate, picked up the car at noon, and indicated initially I would return at 9PM. When I inquired about returning the car the next morning instead (4th of July in DC, all the access points to highways were closed to it was extremely difficult to get to the airport), they told me I had to pay a $65 extension fee even though I had paid the equivalent of 24 hours.

Rude, unhelpful, unprofessional staff. The desk was abandoned when I got there and I was made to feel like I was inconveniencing the staff by asking to be helped. That place needs a new manager and everyone working that service counter needs customer service training. Will not be using Thrifty again.

No cars available, despite the reservation. Given an electric vehicle that wasn’t fully charged, and a 30 dollar credit for a future rental. Spent hours charging the car. Returned it at 40% and was charged a $35 feel because it wasn’t charged fully. I was not informed of the fee until I got my bill by email. The car was great but the hidden costs doubled what I intended to pay.

Terrible pick up at national airport. Waited in line for 4 hours. So, Thrifty rented out way too many cars with far too few staff. There were only 2 persons at the counter and frequently one would leave - reasons unknown. Then AFTER finally getting to the counter, we had to wait ANOTHER 45 MINUTES for our vehicle to be ready. THEN, while driving on our leg from Washington to Nashville (1st day of trip to Dallas), we got a low tire pressure warning. Stopped immediately, called Thrifty, waiting on and off hold for almost 2 hours - only to be hung up on in the end. Had to fend for ourselves and by the grace of god only, reached our destination. Never rent again from Thrifty, ever.

This is the second time that I have tried to rent a car from the DC national airport location. They always try to give me an Old car especially one that I did not ask for made a car they offer have smoke smell. They did not have a car for us. Did not notify us, told us we would have to wait hours to possibly get us a car, and we were not allowed to leave to get food or we would loose our place in line. They would not cancel the reservation or transfer it. We had to do that ourselves.

Really the whole experience was great, they were very quick at processing me when I went to pick up the car, even though my reservation was only made an hour beforehand. Everyone who worked there was nice and friendly, I interacted with 3/4 employees.

Cons:

The price ends up being more if you don't have insurance and whatnot, about $44/day. So keep that in mind.

I always use enterprise when I can - sometimes they are the most affordable, but almost always they are in the same ballpark as the other companies. I seem to have a negative issue any time I rent a car with another company. I've never had any problems with Enterprise.

Just pray nothing happens. They don't explain things well and their call-in service for roadside assistance is terrible and rude. At least the service provider I was assigned was nice, honest, and accommodating, but the enterprise rep was awful, confusing, and dismissive.

Everything is an up charge. The person at the counter tried to sell us an $89/day insurance policy. I eventually bought a $30/day insurance policy out of fear. Then he wanted to sell us $22/day toll package. We never paid any tolls. Then he wanted to sell us on a $120 gas fee so we wouldn’t have to fill up our tank. They do a hard sell on the extras. It really felt that they make a commission on the extras they can sell.

The lady at the counter when I went to pick up the car was super nice. What I didn’t like: my flight got in after 11pm when Avis closed, but I knew that would be a problem ahead of time so I had called and spoken with someone and they assured me that they would wait for me. However I got off my plane and no shuttles were running for Avis and I wasn’t able to get my car that night. I had to wait till almost 7am before one of the shuttles would allow me to get in and for then to take me to Avis.

The agent at the DCA Avis rental was very polite, friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, we were given a vehicle with the cruise control not working and had a 15hour drive to Florida due to airports closures/hurricane Dorian. We tried contacting customer service various times and no one could help

The car was pretty clean and drove decently. There were no major dents or scratches.

Pick up was done with an agent that was a bit less than friendly. The car was in desperate need of an oil change and tune-up. Drop off was even worse! The man that did The Returned was abrupt and barely willing to help me in any way with my luggage or anything else. The woman who was driving the shuttle for me back to the airport insisted that I get out in spite of the cold weather and walk so that she didn't have to be inconvenienced by dropping me off at the normal stop. It was cold, I was hauling three pieces of luggage and it only made my experience that much worse! One of the three gentlemen who were on the shuttle who have been picked up at the stop (and had waited far longer than they had expected) called this service "not so ez" car rental. I now understand why he called it that. I won't rent with this service again.

Our airplane was slightly delayed but still arrived before midnight which is when E-Z rent-A-car closes. But for whatever reason they decided to close at 11PM, before we even landed, which left us stranded and looking for an available car rental at the airport when all other agencies were closing soon. Fortunately we did find one but ended up spending nearly 7 times as much for the car. I have half a mind to file a complaint with the BBB and get EZ to pay for this since it's their fault we were left in that situation. I will NEVER rent a car with them again.

Pros:

Got a luxury coupe so that was a very pleasant surprise. Fast ride and felt just right for our vacation.

Cons:

When I was first choosing a ride, I was told the car had apple CarPlay, but it in fact did not have that so putting on my navigation was a bit difficult at first but we made it work. I got the 2018 q60 3.0t awd.

We picked up at Airport but we didn't fly in and it was a little tricky getting to the office when we were driving in. Once inside we went to the National Desk but there was no one there, the issue was that there was a window open and it had a coat on the chair so it looked like someone had just stepped away. We waited, knocked and called out but no one came. Finally a worker passing by said we needed to go to the Alamo window and that did work fine But there should have been some sign at the National desk telling us to do that. The rest of our experiences were very good.
