Pros: The hotel facilities and environment
5,4 Okay
Pros: My husband and I had stayed here before a couple years ago, and now that all of our friends have graduated we need a place to stay in Durham. We like the location (running trail and golf).
Cons: this trip the bar staff were kind of rude and stuffy. It used to be a nice place to get drinks, but the waiter was rude. Also, we reserved a King room months in advance, and they gave us 2 double beds. Their response when I said something "well, the rooms are the same price." My husband and I sleep in the same bed at home, and would like to on vacation. Also, housekeeping knocked on our door at 8:30am.

5,1 Okay
Pros: I liked location of the hotel. There are plenty of restaurants, shopping in the area, proximity to a highway.
Cons: Not a very well appointed room, no drinks in a mini bar, not even water, unfriendly staff, a very disappointing breakfast experience with poor food selection and self-cleaning obligations after that - a McDonald's level arrangement. The Marriott name should carry much greater level of service and comfort. For the same money, Hyatt is vastly superior.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was friendly and efficient. Room was spacious and comfortable. Beds were better than ours at home! Seperate water closet and shower area, would be perfect if traveling with family or with multiple groups in your party! Will stay here everytime I visit Durham!
Cons: That I was only able to stay 1 night! Wish I had a longer vacation!
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Great hotel
Cons: Bathroom door wouldn't close or lock

Pros: Stayed over night with a Grandmother, 1 year old and 4 year old kids, was provided with a crib free of charge, the pool was amazing and had some float noodles provided. Loved that they offered complimentary happy hour! Very quick and accommodating staff. Was best hotel stay I've ever had.
Spotlessly clean, new furnishings, paint, carpet, hardwoods, cabinets. Huge first floor king master with en suite bath and plenty of room to spread out. There's a pull-out twin bed tucked into the loveseat which is perfect for a child or petite adult. Brand new bathroom remodel upstairs and a bathroom created (literally) out of thin air - brand new walk in shower! Upstairs, two queen bedrooms (one Tempurpedic), one firm Stearns and Foster) and another king pillow top. Two-story family room with 60" flat screen (HBO, Netflix and Hulu) and world's most comfy sectional with three power recliners. The adjacent kitchen is generously outfitted (Keurig, Mr. Coffee, crock pot, waffle iron, coffee grinder, etc.). There are lots of dishes, flatware (service for 12), and glasses including wine glasses and some unusual Margarita glasses. Whether you’re warming up pizza or preparing Thanksgiving dinner, you’ll find the right bakeware, serving dishes and appliances for a successful gathering. Back yard isn't huge but there is an 8' privacy fence, and brand new deck and patio with Weber grill. Small swing set for the kiddos, too. Literally two minutes to I-85 at Cole Mill Road; 6 minutes to almost anywhere on Duke West Campus (and only 3 minutes to Krispy Kreme donuts!). Easy access to downtown Durham and plenty of restaurants, gas stations and shopping nearby. Always spit-spot cleaned by my private housekeeper to exacting standards (e.g. we wash EVERYTHING, disinfect all surfaces and use the white glove inspection test). Great for quiet families (very close knit family neighborhood of cluster homes) or for quiet indoor reunions. Convenient launching pad for Triangle activities. No parties (parking is strictly limited - no street parking) and outdoor noise must be at low levels and daytime only. Offered by a Five Star Superhost.

5,7 Okay
Cons: Bathroom upon arriving was not clean; staff were constantly on personal phone calls throughout my stay and I felt like I was the one interrupting when asking a question about the facilities. Cleaning staff was blocking hallways when trying to locate my room and did not move anything out of the way which was an inconvenience to me. Staff were on personal calls in the elevator and openly eating in the bar area. It was strange as there is normally an employee lounge area where the staff does not interact with guests. Staff maintenance door was very close to my room and the door was constantly slamming throughout the night. My stay would have been more enjoyable should the staff had behaved in a more professional manner.

"Like walking into a hug!" GardenSpirit Guesthouse is a peaceful garden retreat with complete privacy, but with easy access to Duke, downtown Durham, interstates and shopping. Nestled into part of a 10-acre estate of towering pines and crystal blue skies, GardenSpirit is a light-filled, 2850 sf spacious cottage w/ 3 kings, 2 XL twins, sunroom, massage chair, meditation paths, gardens & hot tub. The house was originally designed as a women's garden retreat center so the furnishings are soft, pastel and charming - perfect for a girls' weekend, family reconnection, writing retreat and/or soul renewal. Great place to stay if you're in town for a wedding or graduation (and we would even consider hosting a very small wedding and reception with advanced approval). Even business travelers will feel at home here, with fast internet access and desks in each bedroom. The house is private but it is located within an established residential neighborhood. Folks are friendly (you'll see more people walking their dogs than cars) and the neighborhood is safe. To reassure you further, the house is protected by a monitored alarm system and external video surveillance (it helps us keep track of who's on site when no one has booked the house). There are four bedrooms, one on the main level and three upstairs. "Carolina on My Mind" (aka 'the yellow bedroom') is on the first floor and has a king sized bed, comfy quilts and antique dresser, updated for you. In the closet find extra pillows and blankets. Each room has an accurate atomic clock with USB charger. The first floor bath, next door to the bedroom, has an oversized vanity with one sink, lots of storage and a generous shower with a shelf for your shampoo. The shower is a step-in with safety grab bars. "Once in a Blue Room" is the master suite at the top of the stairs. Double the size of the other bedrooms, this oasis has a private bath with two sinks and vanities (in true 1980s style one of the vanities is just outside the bathroom (what were they thinking?). The colors are soft (periwinkle blue) and the comforter and blankets even softer. The room is accented by bright yellow awning stripes on the privacy curtain and shades. Brand new furniture in this room including a computer desk with convenient top side outlets, and nightstands with pull-out shelves. Behind the bookshelf divider is a lovely hand-painted garden themed armoire. The master bath has a shower/tub combo, loads of fluffy towels and cheerful yellow rugs. The "magical midnight" massage room also lives inside this room - we converted the master closet to a evening-like experience complete with stars. Recline in the chair and let yourself relax.ahhhhh. "Tickled Pink" is the smallest bedroom, which faces the private back yard/forest. A wicker desk offers a place to jot down your thoughts. There are two brand new nightstands and a luggage rack. Overhead is a new ceiling fan operated from a wall switch. This room has a king bed with a firm mattress. If someone in your group needs a little extra back support, this is the bed for him or her. "In the Limelight" is a bright bedroom that overlooks the front gardens and has two XL twin beds dressed with Lauren Conrad comforters. There is a ceiling fan and a screen to provide privacy to occupants of both beds. Sit a spell at the rattan desk and gather your thoughts. "Tickled Pink" and "In the Limelight" are served by the hall bathroom, a mere 10 steps away. The bath has a brand new double vanity, new twinkly overhead lights and a tub/shower combo. Though the house and grounds are generous, GardenSpirit is not the place for a big party. Only registered guests are welcome to use the facilities (hot tub, massage chair, etc.). And the house is a non-smoking place to hang out - it's a medical necessity for the owners. We honor quiet hours from 10:00 pm to 8:00 am so that you sleep well and undisturbed. You might hear the hoot of an owl or the rustle of a squirrel (those darned rascals steal the birdseed!). And during the day, you'll be entertained by the antics of tiny hummingbirds, flashy cardinals and gorgeous bluebirds (we feed them all). Best of all is the frequent appearance of a momma deer and her fawn, frolicking in the woods or occasionally you’ll catch a glimpse of a red fox. There is a neighborhood unicyclist who rides by the house every day but he zips past in a flash so you might miss him. You might like to visit the Purple Treehouse with some very happy children. Next to it is a sturdy “airplane” teeter totter which has been known to accommodate big and little humans. And the hammock is just behind the treehouse, so you can take 10 and gaze into the leafy canopy of trees. There are park benches placed strategically throughout the forest for contemplation and relaxation. If you prefer to stay inside, the 60" flatscreen is full of delights - Netflix, Hulu, all cable channels and HBO. The Roku is already signed on to our account and the DVD player is simple to use. The internet is fast and dependable and we have VOiP phone service, but there aren't many phones - don't want to interrupt your reverie. Of course, it's always nice to curl up with with a good book/Kindle in the cozy living room or sun room - there are lots of regular books on the shelves, including a couple by the Rogglis. If you have children, you might want to rent the Creative Cottage during your stay for a small additional fee - art supplies galore and no worries about spills. All in all, GardenSpirit is a place to settle in and feel “at home away from home.”

6,0 Good
Pros: Friendly staff
Cons: The hotel was dated and kind of grossed me out
8,8 Excellent
Pros: What I have to say that is SUPER positive about this hotel is that: 1. It SMELLS SO GOOD. Really clean and neat and tidy. 2. Very nice business center! 3. Great having a little grill right in the lobby 4. The room I had was very spacious and had a TON of outlets. Seriously, there's like 8 outlets that I can see from where I'm sitting. 5. The decor was VERY nice. Bathrooms were more modern with adjustable shower heads, they had towels that were color coordinated like you would have at your house. Very nice bathroom soaps, lotions, etc. Makeup mirror, too! Maybe this was a one off experience, maybe staff was tired or something but the service I received at the desk wasn't very helpful. The hotel is GREAT for the price and if you catch the front desk on a good day, I'd recommend this to anyone.
Cons: Background: This hotel was booked for me by my boss on booking.com for a business trip. After booking, we were given a receipt that showed the amount that was paid and the credit card that was used, we also had a pin and a confirmation #. I got an e-mail asking me to set my preferences for the hotel stay - I was impressed. I chose a king room on a higher floor with extra blankets, a good view and an early check in of 1pm. Early that morning I got a text saying that they weren't able to get me a room by 1pm. A bummer but I let that roll off of my shoulder. When I arrived at the front desk, the employee greeted me and got to work on checking me in but asked for a credit card. It turns out that they didn't have any "pre payment on file". So I offered to give them the confirmation number that I had. They just kept repeating that they have no record of the pre-payment. I offered to show them the PIN and the booking e-mail that I had on my phone. Again, "I'm not showing any pre-payment". Note, the employee did not look at my phone that I offered to show what I was talking about. They did offer that the only way that they could accept a credit card payment from my boss was by faxing a credit card authorization form. So I called my boss and she reminds me of the receipt that she e-mailed me and offers to help in anyway possible, maintaining that she already paid her card was already charged and that we have the receipt. (Which I did). I return to the front desk to try to show the employee the receipt from my phone and they looked at it briefly and said "that print is way too small, there's no way I can see that". So I call my boss back again and neither of us can figure out the problem, so my boss calls the customer service number and ends up fixing the problem. My issues are these: 1. The employee never even TRIED to look up my information via the confirmation number I had OR the receipt. I guess in all fairness they did try to look at the receipt but not very hard. They could've enlarged the screen, printed it out, something. 2. They never explained what the different problems COULD be. They just kept saying that we never paid. Without knowing WHERE the problem could be stemming from it was hard to figure out what to do next. I was just there saying we paid and they were saying "no you didn't" while not looking at my documentation. 3. After checking in the only request that I got fulfilled was the king room. I ended up on the 2nd floor and after all the frustration didn't even try to change it or request the extra blankets. 4. The staff wasn't really "friendly". They weren't mean but they didn't smile, only said things in a matter of fact manner.

Pros: This hotel is very conveniently located to Duke. The facilities are clean, the staff is friendly, and they even give out free Otis Spunkmeyer cookies at the front desk!
6,0 Good
Pros: The room was very convenient to the Duke campus. We decided to stay the night after a basketball game but weren't very familiar with the Durham area. This hotel was definitely a good place for people who don't know what else is around.
Cons: Having previously worked in hospitality for 6 years, I find myself more critical of hotels and their staff more than others. This staff was not very pleasant and I don't think any of the people I encountered smiled once. You need to ensure that guests who are out of their normal comfort of home feel comfortable in the place they'll be sleeping. The beds were also not great. The air conditioning/heat was very loud.

Pros: Reasonable price and great location adjacent to Duke medical center and campus.
Cons: Aug 2016 the hotel is under renovation. No restaurant or breakfast. No fitness facility.
