Hiring a car in North America is strongly advised. Not only will a hire car allow you to explore when it’s convenient for you, but you’ll also be able to travel to remote locations, which isn’t always possible with other modes of transport such as buses. North America is renowned for its stunning scenery, so a hire car is a great way of seeing some of the fantastic sights on offer. With a hire car, you can go to beautiful locations, such as Niagara Falls, Death Valley National Park and Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests. You will also be able to stop at some quaint towns and villages during your journey, which isn’t something you’re able to do on public transport.

Driving in North America is a great experience on the whole, with many of the roads being well-maintained. In rural locations, the driving style is more relaxed; however, the closer you get to big urban areas, such as New York, you will notice the driving style becomes less patient. Most roads in this region are wide and spacious, so you should find it easy to manoeuvre your vehicle. Signage across the region is also good, so you’ll be able to get to your destination with ease. Roads can be slightly narrower in rural areas, in which case you should drive more cautiously. Driving in North America, on the whole, is on the right-hand side of the road, except in Bermuda, which is on the left-hand side and similar to the UK.

The minimum age to hire a car in North America varies depending on the country or state that you are in, as well as the agency you are hiring from. For example, with Enterprise in the U.S., you must be at least 21 years of age to hire a car in all states except Michigan and New York, where you only need to be 18. In Canada, you need to be 21 in all provinces apart from Saskatchewan and Quebec, where 18 is the minimum age. You should contact your agency before travelling to find out what its policy is. Drivers who are younger than 25 will probably need to pay a young driver surcharge and have restrictions on certain vehicles.
