KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Las Vegas

  • Having a car available is of key importance if you plan on enjoying all that Las VePetrol has to offer, particularly if you are not staying at one of the hotels on the Strip. Public transport is quite limited, so, if you plan on exploring the town, driving is your best option.
  • Planning on renting a vehicle during your time in Las Vegas? If your flight lands at McCarran International Airport, you can reach the McCarran Rent-A-Car Center by hopping onto one of the 24/7 shuttles that ferry passengers from both Terminals 1 and 3 to the hire center.
  • No visit to Las VePetrol is complete without a trip to the Strip. However, drivers should be aware that distractions line the Strip and it is quite easy to let your attention stray. Because of this, it is advised that drivers make sure to keep their eyes on the road, especially because the drivers ahead of you may themselves become distracted and drive erratically.
  • Rush hour traffic is no laughing matter in Las Vegas. Congestion can become quite severe during the morning rush (from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.) and in the afternoon from (4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.). On the weekend after 4:00 p.m. there is also a separate tourist rush that fills the streets back up again. For the standard work week traffic, I-15 and US 95 are to be avoided if at all possible, as they are two of the worst hit highways during rush hour.
  • Book your car hire in Las Vegas at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Standard hire cars in Las Vegas are around 13% cheaper than other car types, on average

Insights shared by verified travellers who hired a car in Las Vegas

Do not get persuaded that car rental companies in Las Vegas do not accept international / out of state insurance and liability insurance. These companies have a new tactic to scam you by telling you that this is their policy and is unchanged. Then you are forced to pay however much amount they set because you already took the shuttle to their counter. YOU CAN TAKE THE SHUTTLE BACK TO MCCARRAN CAR RENTAL CENTER and find a more honest rental company by being quoted in person. That is what we did and Sixt saved our trip.
Verified travelerJul 2024
Use the trusted car rentals. Enterprise was a thousand times better and what I paid for was what I got. Skip the hassle and just go with the trusted places
Verified travelerJun 2024
I don’t know that aspect of which car/cars to rent in Las Vegas, but I’ve had the best car rental experience in Las Vegas than other cities.
Verified travelerAug 2024
The staff was very nice, there was no line. The car was just what I ordered.
MitraAug 2024
Ask about/look into hidden fees, including drop off outside office hours, fee for multiple drivers, etc.
Verified travelerJun 2024
Friendly stuff. Could use some improvement in check ins
Verified travelerMar 2024
Don't know. We reserved a tesla 3 but wasnt available upon arrival. We were way happier with the roomy Sienna hybrid that we received though so all good. Would definitely rent a Sienna again.
Verified travelerApr 2024
I'm seeing an increase in charging stations, an electric vehicle would be sweet.
Verified travelerMar 2024
Book early and expect delays especially during busy travel times - most car rental places were running out of vehicles.
ZacharyMay 2024
Take the shuttle back to the airport but get a Uber or Lyft there.
Verified travelerApr 2024
Make sure to read the fine print on the unlimited mileage claim.
ChristinaJan 2024
Driving in Vegas was pretty easy to get around. Pro tip , there is free parking at treasure Island, and then you can take the monorail to check out the rest of the hotels on the strip.
MalarieDec 2023
Don't rent from Hertz, Dollar or Thrifty...sound advice for any destination
Verified travelerDec 2023
Easy to rent from the airport.
Verified travelerDec 2023
I got on one highway to go downtown from vibesdiystudio that had me on the wrong side of the street, with cars going the opposite direction on the wrong side than I'm use to. It was clear on how to enter, there was concrete barricades for safety, but mentally weird. Maybe one because I'm not use to it
Verified travelerJan 2024
Check that you don’t get stuck with a hidden drop off charge if you’re returning the car in a different location With a pick up at a hotel on The Strip ensure you find out where the car rental company counter is ahead of time
ShakehJan 2024
Freeways are a little tricky and get super busy at night. I would recommend driving within the speed limit to avoid any sudden maneuvers. Otherwise the streets are wide but also follow speed limit to avoid getting ticketed.
AndrewJan 2024
Please research parking rules and fees. Though most hotels and parking lots now charge in the strip, there are still a few that don’t charge for parking (for example, I used TI when visiting the Venetian and Caesars).
JosephJan 2024
Allocate more time for ACE. When you take the shuttle to the car rental companies, you will need to take another one as ACE is off-site.
CareyDec 2023
Driving was easy. Just a lot of REALLY LONG red lights. Do get in a hurry to go anywhere around the strip.
Verified travelerJan 2024
make sure to check WHERE the car is going to be picked up. Don't assume it's at the airport.
Verified travelerDec 2023
Be prepared for putting down a deposit at the rental desk. Follow at a safe distance in Vegas!
Verified travelerDec 2023
Easy to get around . Big streets, locals drive fast .
Michael A.Feb 2024
Plan ahead for time to return vehicle
Verified travelerDec 2023
Check where the rental area is.
YogSept 2023
Uber to a near by off site car rental location. You might save more money and definitely more time. Funny how there is more than one person at the offsite location, but only one person at the airport location.
TamiOct 2023
Ensure your car rental is access able from the airport with the rental car shuttle provided.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Reserve in many car rentals so you’re not stuck without a car
Verified travelerNov 2023
Driving in Las Vegas is beyond easy , big open roads
Verified travelerSept 2023
Be aware of turns in road that dead end. We had a couple of time GPS said make next left. The next left was not a road, we assume it’s an area for u-turns. Other than that driving in area of north Vegas was a breeze
SergioSept 2023
Weigh closely both cost and convenience of rental car versus Uber/taxi. If staying on the strip, it may not be worth a rental car.
Verified travelerSept 2023
We only drove early (1:00 am and 6:00 am) in the morning so the traffic was minimal.
WeiNov 2023
If there is a particular car you want, walk around yourself and ask for it.
JonSept 2023
Look of the rental lot is off site or at the rental car center.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Avoid the Strip as much as possible. The navigation systems are very good.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Rent directly with cat rental businesses and don’t use third party sites.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Get a paper printout of all information. Don’t settle for online only.
SteveNov 2023
Check fluid levels and windscreen cleanliness before leaving the lot.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Check the A/c before accepting
QuocOct 2023
inefficient rental company. staff friendly.
CrystalNov 2023
Driving in Vegas is fine
Verified travelerOct 2023
Don’t rent from Fox Rent a Car or Ace. Contact you local insurance provider prior to your trip and ask about rental car insurance.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Go to the main Rental Car Center near the airport. Stay away from Rampart casino rental office.
StevenAug 2023
You will need to take a second shuttle to certain car rental companies to get your car so be prepared for that if you’re arriving later in the evening. I also think that the little reflective tabs on the road are not quite as nice as painted stripes so it may take a bit to get use to them. If you are in a rush to get to a show don’t drive the strip in the evening 👍🏼
ChrisJun 2023
Lots of traffic right now because of the Formula 1 construction. Use Waze or a Google Maps to avoid huge delays around the Strip.
PhilAug 2023
Driving was smooth. Stay away from driving on the strip late evening. Too congested. I never really parked on the strip
Verified travelerAug 2023
Go to the car rental space rather than booking online. And be nice to the info person & car rental folks.
CarlieJul 2023
Make sure you have a car with a navigation system. Some difficult roads to navigate in Las Vegas.
KarmenJun 2023
Driving in Vegas is chaotic, but the airport rental system is a well oiled machine
Verified travelerJun 2023
Possibly use Sixt. There pick up line moved much faster.
KennethJun 2023
We used GPS to navigate, and boy was it helpful.
SophiaJun 2023
Rent away from the airport to save money
Verified travelerJun 2023
We are from the country, so we don't care for crazy traffic and driving. My husband gets a little excited when it gets that busy, so we spent the night in Vegas, then left first thing the next morning. Our only tip for driving in Las Vegas, is DON'T. lol
Verified travelerJul 2023
Traffic is very busy in Vegas, avoid 95 and 15 when possible, use surface streets. Everyone drives 10+ over the speed limit and runs red lights. Use caution and defensive driving.
MicahAug 2023
Make sure you know where the car rental center is and leave plenty of time for the shuttle bus cause it can be a long wait on an available bus
Verified travelerJun 2023
Driving in. Vegas is great. I ended up renting a car from someone else. Was very satisfied except for the price. Right now there’s a lot of construction there.
KaliaJul 2023
Factor in an additional 30-45 min for car rental return because the rental companies are off site and require a shuttle
ElaineJun 2023
We drove through the National Parks, and stayed out of Vegas as much as possible. We're not Vegas people.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Go with a Hertz that is owned and operated by hertz (Try the airport one!)
Verified travelerJul 2023
Construction for the F1 has made driving an adventure. Be prepared for traffic jams.
Verified travelerJul 2023
if there is a mileage limit, should let customers know in advance.
MyraAug 2023
Leave time to take shuttle to/from airport to car rental area.
MarcinJul 2023
Leave the car in casino’s garage and use Uber to get around!
Verified travelerAug 2023
GPS A MUST. Obey speed limits and keep your eyes opened.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Driving in Las Vegas is not for the faint of heart.
AnthonyJul 2023
Make sure you go over the entire vehicle before leaving
Verified travelerAug 2023
Read through our reservation confirmation thoroughly and assume nothing.
PamelaJul 2023
Very busy around the Las Vegas Strip and Airport.
CynthiaAug 2023
Book early and plan for a line.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Plan around sporting events when driving
Verified travelerJun 2023
Plan your route before you start driving. Other than pronouncing Nevada wrong, nothing annoys Las Vegas residents more than tourists driving erratically trying to figure out where they are.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Drivers on the roads are definitely more friendly than in Miami and there's much less traffic. Airport traffic is much faster than everywhere else in the city, so familiarize yourself with your trip ahead of time. The car has to be returned tonthe northernmost entrance of the rent-a-car center.
TonyaMay 2023
Be careful of other drivers, especially when changing lanes. But renting a car is the best way to get around town.
SarahMay 2023
Las Vegas drivers are a bit more aggressive than I’m used to, but overall I didn’t have an issue. I would have rather ride share or walked. Only rent a car if you need to (we visited the Hoover Dam!)
Verified travelerMay 2023
Shop around for gas. The difference in pricing between one station and another defies logic. One station will be $4.45 and another will be $5.99?
Verified travelerMay 2023
Know where you are going and make sure you know where to park. The car should be a comfort not a burden.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Ask if the rental service is on site at the airport or remote.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Allow an hour to shuttle to the rental car area.
