Overview Reviews

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable, lovely staff, delicious breakfast! Gorgeous grounds with massive old trees.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were particularly helpful in assisting me with my poorly husband. There were many thoughtful touches, like the torches provided for the walk back and lavish amounts of tea and coffee in the room, the tea and cake at tea time and chilled water available, too. I was glad to see a stair lift provided as the stairs looked pretty daunting. The house was beautifully decorated with gorgeous wallpaper, soft furnishings and very interesting items of furniture and objet d'art. We were most pleased with our visit and would come back again.
Cons: The house is set on a hill and I would have liked better warning about that in the brochure!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast room was beautifully set out, worthy of a stately home! The fresh fruit salad platter was so exquisite that I hardly dared to break it up (but I did and it was as delicious as it looked!). The smoked salmon and scrambled egg were the best we've ever had. The reception rooms were all lovely to look at but on this brief visit we didn't have time to explore the house in detail. We were able to walk into the centre of Wells (downhill) in the afternoon and back up the long steep hill, ending with the fairly rough drive to the hotel after dinner when it was still light, but we are accustomed to this kind of terrain and have suitable footwear! Taxis are available for those who don't want to walk!
Cons: Nothing!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Beryl is a gem in every way. A stately house and garden which, together with the guests, are lovingly cared for. You feel like you are in an earlier age of grace and manners while also enjoying modern amenities and wonderful breakfasts. Rely on the dinner recommendations of the staff and spend time in Wells and its marvelous Cathedral.
Cons: There was nothing we did not like.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: All was good at Beryl’s
Cons: Nothing
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfasts were lovely - set us up for the day. Everyone was very friendly. Location was secluded and vey peaceful - wish we had more time to just relax there.
Cons: Bigger mirror in bedroom - though separate bathroom had a large one.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: very warm welcome from the owners and charming service at breakfast - which was excellent. The place is full of character and guests' needs are well met.
Cons: Lighting in driveway could be better. (We arrived after dark).
9,6 Excellent
Pros: beautifully presented rooms, clean, good choice at breakfast, lovely afternoon tea and cake, tranquil and relaxing, quiet at night, gorgeous garden. Friendly owners and staff (lovely touch leaving my daughter's teddy "his own biscuit treat" on the bed). Thank you so much - hope to come again.
Cons: nothing
10,0 Excellent
Pros: From the moment we rang the bell to the moment we shut the door to leave nothing was too much trouble and the only negative was we couldn’t stay longer
Cons: Leaving!!!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: It was wonderful. The owner was so kind and pleasant. Definitely stay there again.

Pros: Room was a good standard
Cons: Room was a good size and decorated tastefully only down side I could say was the view from the room, on the description on the website was a view over looking on to the cathedral but instead was a view of the high street.
7,9 Good
Pros: The room was well decorated with all that you would require
Cons: The food was over priced so we ae out The bedroom walls were paper thin snoring and conversations clearly audible. A No No
10,0 Excellent

Cons: Nothing not to like
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The location is by far the biggest thing, but it’s an old lovely building, great staff , very friendly and informative.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location, directly opposite cathedral.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Good breakfast, nice large room with a King bed. The location was great being right in the centre of town. Parking out the back of the hotel was very convenient.
Cons: Room was a bit warm but it was a particularly hot day. The fan in the room cooled it down enough for a comfortable nights sleep.
7,5 Good
Pros: all ok, but dinner starting at 7pm not good for old types like us had to eat out and there are not a lot of good resturants
Cons: see above
7,5 Good
Pros: Brilliant location in centre of Wells
Cons: 2 lightbulbs gone in room, 1/4 of a roll of Toilet paper on arrival. Hot and Cold control on shower not working.
7,1 Good
Pros: Brilliant location. Near the lovely centre, cathedral, Bishop's palace and several good restaurants. Very pleasant walking around the area. Lovely terrace across the road from main entrance. Wells is lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed all of it.
Cons: We were a group of 4 adults including an elderly couple. Having seen some previous comments, we called the hotel to request the elderly couple was given a more accessible room. They were given a twin room in the main part of the hotel. There were still several stairs to the room, it was very small and the bathroom had no walk-in shower, only a bath. The room was also very hot. Our room was a double room in the more modernised Coach house, so fairly spacious, but it had just an average double bed. It was very noisy as the window overlooked the side street. We were very disappointed with breakfast. bearing in mind that it costs over £18 per person. Cooked breakfast had to be ordered, which on a positive side means it's all fairly fresh. However, staff seemed to get confused with orders and even though I asked for my bacon and eggs to be well done, it all came underdone. It also meant that we had the style of having toasts brought to the table, so cooling down very quickly. Some options on the menu carried an extra charge of £5! The continental breakfast was non-inspiring with very limited choice for fruit, juice and only white an brown sliced bread. The space for breakfast and dining is very non-inspiring and small, so it all feels a bit cramped. We ended up eating out both nights.
6,8 Good
Pros: City centre location - friendly helpful staff - comfortable, clean room - excellent comfortable lounge with open fire, newspapers and drinks service - good breakfast with good service in the dining room
Cons: not very impressed by the dinner choice, but there are lots of different places to eat within a very short distance
6,8 Good
Pros: The Staff at the Swan in wells were all really nice, friendly and polite. The hotel over the carnival weekend was very well staffed(maybe for the carnival?) but well run. The staff were always on hand and the reception ladies were also very helpful. Very good service.
Cons: En suite was a little small in 22 and dated, the room was fine, tv, kettle etc. Budget toilet roll a big let down. I like the good stuff.
7,0 Good
Pros: Availability of a car park and the pleasantness of the staff
Cons: No lift and no offer to carry bags to the room
6,7 Good
Pros: Location was very central and ideal for what we wanted to watch the illuminated carnival on Friday night
Cons: The bacon at breakfast!!!
7,6 Good
Pros: Excellent ancient coaching hotel, nicely modernised. Staff were friendly, attentive and efficient.
6,0 Good
Pros: I liked the blend of old and new. The public rooms were delightful and the location of the hotel was excellent.
Cons: I would like to have had more choice and variety on the menu in the restaurant. I think that you need a more light meal/bar snack facility as well in the hotel.
5,6 Okay
Pros:
Cons: Did not offer any incentive to dine in hotel.
7,2 Good
Pros: Location, wonderful breakfast, large room, comfort - good size bathroom, good bed. Nice bar, good parking.
Cons:
4,8 Okay
Pros: Friendliness and welcome from staff, but at times felt that they were trying to cover too many aspects of the work - needed more staff.
Cons: Bit overpriced for the room facilities - shower was static and not easy to use. Do some furniture moving to watch TV etc.
6,0 Good
Pros: Room service with a smile!
Cons: The wallpaper in room 4. It was too busy for the size of the room.

7,9 Good
Pros: The breakfast was very good and the location right in the middle of Wells was excellent
Cons: Nothing to do with the hotel, but it was hard to get into the centre of Wells and the signposting was not too helpful.
7,9 Good
Pros: The room was quite good. We felt as if we we were in the ancient times. It had everything we needed. The view from the window was great. The room was quite clean. The location was excellent. The breakfasts were very good!
Cons: I asked the receptionist if I could pay by cash. He agreed and said that I would pay while checking out. Unfortunately, when I was checking out the receptionist had taken my money from my card about 7 am. When I asked him about it, he made the refund, I paid by cash, but I lost twenty-five pounds because of the bank commission of transactions.
7,9 Good
Pros: Location is expert, pub is great, staff is friendly, and they even have a small car park.
Cons: There was no hot water in the morning. The lady at reception said "we've been having problems." That suggests that they should call someone in to have it fixed.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Lovely food and a really good choice for breakfast we left completely stuffed. Room was really clean the cleaners do a fantastic job.
Cons: If your after a good nights sleep this is not the place to go but they do supply ear plugs which we had to use, even when the pub shut there was a rumbling noise and then at 5 in the morning they started setting up the market
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The staff was friendly and helpful. Reception, restaurant staff and housekeeping. Had a TV but didn't use it. Occasionally had to wait for faucet water to get hot, no big deal. Breakfast choices good. The fan and the stool to get into my bed a blessing!
5,0 Okay
Cons: Fly in the tomato juice at breakfast! 7 dishes not available on the menu in Anton's restaurant Food in general was poor Key would not open the door and no assistance for my elderly mother when she needed help

Cons: Wifi could have been stronger and bathroom was small.

Pros: Staff were v. helpful with local information and bus schedules. Bed was new and v. comfy. I enjoyed both an eve. meal and the included full breakfast. The room was fine, a single room so small but well equipped. The hotel is being refurbished, so the one drawback was the bathroom. Hopefully, it's next on the list. While everything worked, it clearly has not been updated yet.

3,8 Mediocre
Pros: The breakfast was good - as was the restaurant.
Cons: My shower broke and I had to ask three different members of staff to do something about it – they first demanded to know how I'd broken it (?!) then they asked if I could use a friend's shower in a different room! Eventually (about 2 hours later) with a fair amount of huffing and puffing they let me use the shower in an unoccupied room. Not exactly the service I expected from a £100-a-night 'hotel'.
7,1 Good
Pros: The location and the view from our window. Excellent dinner at Rugantino and good breakfast. Large bathroom with decent shower and towels. Nice staff, especially the morning waitress, Neil, a kitchen staffer who carried our bags downstairs, and Edward, the server at dinner.
Cons: Tiny room in an attic type space. Creepy fire escape door with noises coming from beyond it. Unsettling. Extremely steep steps to get to the space. Small double bed. Not much room for suitcases or anything else! Our dinner reservation was never entered into the book, so, in spite of receiving a kind note from the owner stating that we were booked at 7 at a lovely table, there was no room for us in the dining room! We were put into the bar area, alone. No music (Italian restaurant playing Dean Martin, etc in the main dining room). Needless to say, I was furious! Fortunately, the food was delicious and our gracious waiter Edward, did not charge us for our wine.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The staff were most helpful and understanding about my needs during my stay - Evelyn kindly advised that I could have breakfast at 7.45 am on the Sunday in view of the fact I had to be at Wells Cathedral Song School by 8.30 and I felt she really went the extra mile by doing this. Also the room was well appointed, clean and very tastefully decorated.
Cons: Little to criticise apart from perhaps it was a little surprise to look out directly in my room to people sitting immediately in the restaurant below.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Lovely old building and beautiful view of Wells Cathedral
Cons: Very steep stairs up to the bedroom
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Standard room basic twin beds
Cons: Parking
7,1 Good
Pros: The location and the lovely staff.
Cons: The bathroom was tiny and when you switched on the shower, there was a stench of rotten eggs from the waste pump unit.
5,0 Okay
Pros: The entire room was tired and needs revamping. The four poster bed made the room dark and the whole hotel has lost its architectural integrity by being carved up into too many small units. The bathroom was badly lit and the carpet in the bedroom dirty as were other places. This hotel is old but needs to meet twenty first century expectations.A more upbeat interpretation of the place is needed.
Cons: AS ABOVE.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Such friendly and helpful staff
6,0 Good
Pros: Location
Cons: Needed a good hoover and clean, cutlery, cups and floors, kitchen door open didn’t look very clean. A bottle of water in the room was not fresh as green film in the bottom. I shook the bottle and it mixed into the water which I then emptied
6,3 Good
Pros: Very friendly and comfortable. Lovely breakfast.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful house, excellent hosts, we made a great choice, everything is done with excellence
6,7 Good
Pros: The hosts were friendly and outgoing and the Post House was unique in its renovations. Breakfast was delicious!
Cons: Because we like to walk to a place for supper there was only one choice and it involved walking home along a dark road for about a mile.
7,3 Good
Pros: Great location with good access to countryside as well as local towns. Decor is very chic, and facilities very comfortable. The proprietors were very welcoming and always accommodating.
7,7 Good
Pros: We found The Post House a very coumfortable b&b in an ideal location for visiting many places of interest in Somerset The rooms and food were first class and the proprietors made our stay very comfortable
6,8 Good
Pros: We chose this hotel by the decor represented in the pictures on their website.
Cons: Room was in the eves and therefore some problems with convenience of room space. Bath was a deep square tub with shower head not attached to fixed point above posing some problems with showering conveniently.
