The Sandy Duck - Falmouth - Building
2
9,7 Excellent (137 reviews)
R1 812+
Overview Reviews
On a hill overlooking Falmouth Bay, boutique B&B The Sandy Duck combines sleek Scandinavian design with sea views and warm, home-from-home hospitality. Owner and manager Freyja earned her hosting stripes crewing aboard luxury yachts before she settled on the Cornish coast, transforming this Edwardian townhouse into a stylish, seven-room bolthole. Now, the interiors are painted in soothing shades and filled with a medley of modern Danish design, hand-picked antiques and artworks by her own family, creating rooms that are as inviting on a fresh January morning as they are on a hot summer’s day.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: very good choice of cold and cooked breakfasts. dining experience was very relaxed.
Cons: Long wait for cooked breakfast Other guests taking mobile phone call in the dining area Coffee could have been stronger
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast is excellent. I particularly like the avocado and scrambled eggs on toast. Everything is fresh and of good quality. Room 1 is small, but comfortable, with an excellent shower, a window banquette, and a radio playing classical music upon our arrival. We love the Meraki toiletries in big pump bottles, and the thermos of cold milk on the coffee tray. There was plenty of room for our clothes in the wardrobe and dresser. The decor is lovely, both in the fresh, clean breakfast room, the cosy and warm living room and in the simple but stylish bedrooms. The best bit is the easy and friendly interaction with owner Freyja and her staff, all of whom are lovely.
Cons: We didn't have any problems. Any requests or comments were addressed immediately.

Pros: Probably the freshest, best-tasting breakfast I've ever had at a B&B. Beautiful clean room with a wonderful view of the sea over Falmouth. Truly beautiful B&B.
Cons: Rooms at the top would get pretty hot in the summer as we were roasting in late summer (granted the weather was warm) BUT the room has a good dyson fan to use :). Conversely, it would be so cosy in there in cold seasons!

Pros: Lovely building, spotlessly decorated, maintained and cleaned - couldn't fault it! My bathroom space was tiny but did the job and had a good shower. A small amount of parking on site but plenty of free street parking anyway. Close also to the railway station with very frequent (1/2 hourly) train service to Truro.
Cons: Breakfast not available until 9, but as it wasn't included in the room rate anyway, you had the option not to take it and get breakfast 'on the road' if you needed an early get-away - so an observation rather than criticism!

Pros: Comfy beds , great staff , excellent location and food
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Hotel has an enviable position on the waterfront and is very impressive when you arrive. Check in was great, public areas lovely and food at all events attended (breakfast and wedding) was delicious and the staff especially are fab. We decided to have a superior room when we booked even though the price seemed a little high (£500 for 2 nights) It was the only slight disappointment of the stay. The room was nice, we had a sea view (slightly restricted but not much) but the room could do with an upgrade and be bigger. The bathroom was very nice and can see the upgrade here but overall I felt the cost of the room was too much. I appreciate the position and ‘view’ however the room and furnishings should be better for the cost. We still had a lovely couple of days but when we return we wouldn’t pay that kind of money again as really not worth it.
Cons: Room needed an upgrade in furnishings and decor.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Staff really helpful and friendly
Cons: Building showing age
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Liked everything about this hotel. Location, rooms, bar, restaurants, staff, views were all excellent. This is a lovely hotel and would definitely recommend to anyone staying in Falmouth. Breakfast was excellent. Staff were extremely helpful, location is beautiful.

9,0 Excellent
Pros: Breath taking location Excellent breakfast
Cons: Would have loved a view of the harbour
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Stayed the first two nights in a double room which was nice and comfortable, but the sound of the cars passing so close to our window was unnerving. It was hot but couldnt open the window because of the noise and there’s no ac in the room so I couldn’t sleep . On the last night I needed a single room and was kindly moved to a lovely single room with water views which was perfect ! Wanted to specially thank one of the employees Luciana who was attentive and caring and made us feel at home , thank you Luciana!

7,7 Good
Pros: Very friendly staff, clean but looking a bit dated
Cons: Saying didn't like would be harsh, I would suggest that they have a look around and decorate to spruce the place up a bit and also look at the produce they are buying to serve at breakfast as the bacon and sausage served were not the best quality, but I were that way again I would have no qualms in booking again

Pros: Location by the sea and in a very quite area of Falmouth, staff were very polite and attentive. Enjoyed the swimming pool area and in the mornings a very hearty breakfast to set you for the day.
Cons: Our room was very small and the bed way too soft. (Mattress was so soft that when either of us moved in the night you felt it). Lastly not being able to lock your door from the inside, just a key for access in only no lock.

Pros: All the staff were very welcoming. our rooms were comfortable. the location is excellent.
Cons: We had planned to have dinner in the hotel but discovered on arrival that there is a jacket and tie dress code for men. I had checked on the hotel web site before our trip and didn't see any mention of this. it would be useful to include in your information. also we had planned to use the pool on sunday morning but it was closed for maintenance. if we had known we would have swum the night before. a little disappointing.

9,7 Excellent
Pros: Clean Warm Very comfortable with bright attractive décor. staff friendly & helpful Breakfast excellent Eve meal good
Cons: Information for entry & parking should be improved. Bar & Restaurant disorganised, however they were in a period of transition.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Location and bedroom quality
Cons: Staff skills and lack of car parking.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Location and facilities good
Cons: Hard mattress on bed Cold croissants at breakfast Building site in front of hotel
7,0 Good
Pros: The breakfast was good and the staff at hand to top up the coffee. A varied selection of dishes to please everyone.
Cons: The room was comfortable but somewhat on the small side. So many cushions and pillows on the beds and hardly anywhere to put them. Soon there will be no sea-view from this hotel as a large block of flats is being constructed right in front between the hotel and beach.
5,8 Okay
Pros: Nice food and great spa Shame you have to pay extra to use facilities
Cons: Room need lots of updates, very sorry state for a suite. Very dated and small bed. Restaurant staff very slow.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Location and the breakfast was good.
Cons: Plumbing jumped constantly hot and cold☹️ could use a magnifying mirror in the dark bathroom.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Generally pleasant hotel. Nice position in Falmouth by the sea.
Cons: Grime and mould in parts of the bathroom. No Pernod in the bar.
7,0 Good
Pros: Good quality and choice for breakfast. Quick and friendly service. Good food. Plenty of seated areas to relax in. Separate entrance for Captain's House. Parking. Hot water and clean changing rooms for pool.
Cons: Need to be able to control heating in the room as the radiator was on full blast but no valve, and on at odd times. The amount charged for the new spa facilities. Too many people from outside the hotel use the other pool and spa - lane swimmers not really appropriate for such a small pool. Ugly monstrosity being built in the front yard! Surprised planning permission was given for such a high building. Totally changes the atmosphere of the whole area. If the new residents use the spa facilities too it will be far too busy...
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Very relaxing!
9,0 Excellent
Pros: The room actually had a view over the beach from its balcony, though not advertised as such. In fact, though the hotel were very clear and apologised that building works were obscuring the sea views, they didn't intrude on us. Staff were, without exception, helpful and friendly. The pool and sauna were great.
Cons: The hotel needed reminding that one of us was non dairy to get the milk for drinks in the room. Also the breakfast was missing the veggie sausages which, we were told, 'hadn't been delivered'. That apart there was a good selection available for a near vegan.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very good all round - excellent views
Cons: Shower needed to be more powerful

Pros: Friendliness of staff, very helpful.
Cons: All was very acceptable
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast food was very good, all staff were attentive and a pleasure dealing with them. Hotel position very good. Very busy while we were there but all functioned fine, very little signs of delay in any way.
Cons: Noticed since last visits, no tablecloths at breakfast, may seem a small issue but missed on a small table with hard top . 4th floor room had a sea view but smaller and not as comfortable as lower rooms. Bathroom very large plain glass window with no curtain but fixed quickly when highlighted to reception. Single lift a bit of a problem when faulty.
7,9 Good
Pros: Breakfasts were very good .Lots of different foods to choose from although it would have been nice to have a different choice of fruit each day. They made me fresh scrambled egg each morning . Location was good.Lovely view of the sea.Great to be able to walk along the coast path and only 10 minutes into Falmouth .
Cons: The sea views were spoilt by the windows being really dirty .I appreciate that double sash windows 3 floors up are difficult to clean but it was the first thing we noticed when we went into the room. The surround of the sink was very chipped and worn.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location, right on the seafront with plenty of parking. The staff were super friendly and helpful. Dinner in the bar was good and reasonably priced and they had a great selection at breakfast.
Cons: The only downside to this hotel was that it could do with a little bit of TLC. The decor was a little tired in places but this wouldnt stop me from staying again!
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The view from the room and the dining room, the breakfast and, above all, the staff who were excellent.
Cons: Nothing
9,6 Excellent
Pros: we had a lovely surprise, travelling for our Silver Wedding Anniversary, we were given the Castle Suite, absolutely amazing, what a treat. apart from that, we had dinner, it was lovely though a little confusing, because we fancied steaks, which were on the menu in our room, and reception, but in restaurant only offered a menu which didn't have the same choices, shame, but what we had was good
Cons: bed was a bit lumpy, again a shame , and more choices of evening meal
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent quality and value for money.
Cons: Bar service occasionally slow when busy.
