Get ready for the driving experience of your lifePros:Literally. You need to have really hardened mettle to drive in the Dominican Republic. Rule #1 - Don't hit anyone. Rule #2 - Don't ever block traffic. Literally ANYTHING else is fair game, including driving in the complete opposite direction on highways and Una Vias, and stacking as many family members as possible on your motorbike carrying multiple 5-gallon jugs of water. Somehow I got through an entire week's worth of touring the DR without a scratch and all the Alamo staff were incredibly helpful, friendly, and proved for an incredible experience.Reviewed Apr 6 2017

I was charged for a chip in the windshield that ICons:We looked over the car before I took it and noted something like six damaged places all around the exterior, but didn't take a close look at the windshield. When I returned the car, they took a close look at the windshield and charged me an additional $30 for a chip. I am certain the chip did not happen when I was driving the car because I have been driving many many times in the past when a rock has hit my windshield and chipped it and it is very easy to know when this happens because it makes a loud sound. The fact that I was charged for damage I didn't cause could have been an accident or a scam and I can't know which it was. The scam would be an easy and clever one because, on a car with many damaged parts, it would be hard for a renter to notice and mark them all. But miss one and they charge you for it.Reviewed Mar 28 2017

Will never rent from Alamo or Kayak again. Price gPros:The car was clean. The car was in good shape and served it's function.Cons:My reservation was for a mid size SUV, and was about $150, I purchased additional insurance for $45. Upon arrival, the gentleman at the rental kiosk informed me that the insurance I had purchased was invalid in the Dominican Republic. The minimum insurance I was required to purchase, he informed me, would bring my total to $280 (not including the insurance I had previously purchased). Upon arriving back at the airport at the end of our time in DR, and after an hour of trying to argue using my translation app on my phone, they ended up charging me $388, for what Kayak had charged me $150!!! I'm very disappointed with both Kayak and Alamo. I could have rented a Mecedes Benz full size SUV from the kiosk next door for that price.Reviewed Jun 13 2016

2.5 hours to get a carPros:the car itself was nice, clean and newCons:It took 2.5 hours to get my car through Alamo. The first counter there was one person in front of me and one person to wait on everyone. With only one person in front of me it took 30 minutes to become next in line. The adjacent counter employee felt so bad he brought me out a chair to sit on. Once at the counter it took another 30 minutes and I was told my car was not ready and that it would take 20 minutes. I thought that was fine because I realized I would be at the counter I was at for at least that amount of time. But once I finished at that counter and went to the parking garage counter to get my car I waited yet another hour for the car to arrive. I later learned that the cars were not kept there at the airport and that they are housed in Santo Domingo which is a 20 minute drive away. Once my car arrived they loaded my luggage and then told me I had to wait yet again because they didn't have the correct paperwork for the car. I was the first person off my flight and with no checked bags I was the first person to the car rental counters at 12:15. I did not get my car and leave the airport until 2:30. Unacceptable.Reviewed Jul 19 2016

Pros:The drop off was extremely easy and the staff very professional. I was very happy with the taxi offer.Cons:I was a bit surprised by the additional $500 deposit at the pickup location. The deposit was almost 250% more than the cost of the rental car itself - which only totaled $201. It would have been a little more comforting to know that this extra amount was required prior to arriving at the location. Knowing at booking allows for precise budgeting for the trip.Reviewed Apr 8 2021

Pros:The car was nice and fit our luggage, easy to park and good on gas.Cons:When I arrived in SDQ on 3/20, the rental agent subjected me to high pressure sales tactics to purchase additional insurance which would more than double the rental cost. I explained that I have car insurance in US that would cover my rental car. I also explained that my credit card also carries car rental insurance. The rental agent kept insisting that I had to buy additional insurance. The experience was very stressful and caused us an hour long delay. My friend who accompanied us and was renting from a different company (Hertz , I think) at the same time, had a very similar experience so I think this is a widespread problem with car rental in Dominican Republic. I was disappointed to have such poor customer service from Alamo, a company I used to hold in a high esteem.Reviewed Apr 1 2021

Served the purposePros:The Alamo representative was really helpful, and did everything he could to accommodate us. Just a side note - when returning the car, always make sure the gas is as it suppose to be. Technically, the car can have new dents, scratches and mess inside, but as long as there is a gas in the car, that's all they care about. (Not that we returned damaged or messed up car, but on 2 occasions gas was the main concern, nothing else mattered.) Oh, and if possible, have a video of your initial check out of the car, so when you are returning it, you have a proof in what condition the car was, and how much gas you had at the start.Cons:The insurance is a must, especially for large category of the car. When booking, the website immediately suggests for you to purchase an insurance from Allianz. Don't buy it, because it's useless. They don't recognize the coverage in Dominican Republic. You have to buy whatever expensive coverage they provide.Reviewed May 14 2018

Cons:The price of rental was more than twice that I should have paid. I declined the insurance when I made the reservation but once we got there Alamo forced us to take insurance by saying that in Santo Domingo is mandatory. The car's tires were worned out questioning the safety of the car. I asked for another car and they said they didn't have any more cars. I don't recommend Alamo internationallyReviewed Dec 14 2016

Pros:Nothing. Staff were incredibly unuseful. Never hire from this company. We didn’t even end up getting a car both times. They just want your money.Reviewed Dec 16 2019
