Beat up car, surprise charges, other than that how was the play?Pros:Very helpful at drop off. Employees were friendly. Convenient location at Federal Circle near JFK.Cons:Didn't have mild sized SUV I ordered so upgraded me to a gas guzzler. Meh Car had large dent on hood, minor collision damage on rear wheel well and many scratches. Large stain on passenger seat. Naturally, I was responsible for documenting this. Surprise! Most of NY's bridges are 'Easypass' only. No cash lanes. NY State will mail you a bill, but the rental company charges an additional $25 per toll as a fee. So they helpfully offer to rent you an all you can eat Easypass at $26 a day that includes tolls. It's fine if you are in the Metropolitan area and going across bridges each day, might be a $5-10 premium. But if you're renting to drive upstate for a few days, it becomes highway robbery, pay four $6 tolls plus four $25 charges =$124 or four days @$26 =$104.Reviewed Oct 31 2018

Money StolenPros:Nothing.Cons:I prepaid for this car rental, and when I went to pick it up, I was told that I was not able to take the car because I didn't have my own car insurance. I asked to buy insurance through Advantage, but they told me I could not. I was given the option of opting out of insurance when booking the car, which would lead one to believe that in fact, you can buy through Advantage. I asked as to why I wasn't warned about this during my booking, and the clerk said that she didn't know, and it didn't matter. After spending over an hour figuring out what to do, with no help from Kayak, Carrentals.com, or Advantage, I went and booked a reservation at another car rentals agency. This ended up costing me an additional $100 on top of the money that I have prepaid, and still have not been refunded. This is theft. I have used Kayak before, and want to continue to use the website; however, this experience alone has made me decide to never book through the site again.Reviewed Aug 10 2016

Self-Defeating Discrimination Against Local RenterPros:Absolutely nothing.Cons:Advantage's JFK location refused to honor my reservation because I don't my own car with full insurance and live within a 60 mile radius. In other words, they're an NYC car rental place that refuses to rent cars to NYC residents - why else would we be renting a car in our own city?! Most of us, by nature of living here, go through the airport rental experience a couple of times a year when we need a car for short regional trips that the bus or train won't help with. I've never had this issue before; Advantage's customer rep literally mocked me and told me I had to "read the fine print." That's not fine print...it's a pretty major and unusual caveat, and possibly wouldn't hold up in court. I took my business next door to Dollar, and in the hour I waited in their shared vestibule for a car to be ready saw 4 others at Advantage deal with the same asinine policy. Because of Advantage, I nearly missed a wedding; I witnessed others after me left stranded when Dollar ran out of cars, too.Reviewed Nov 14 2016

Advantage - Eze Pass UsuryCons:We were very angry and disappointed that we were faced with a 145% increase in our cost to rent our car due to the exhorbitant premium for an EZE Pass for the week. We were expecting to pick up our car, having already paid the rental charges and be on our way. We were then informed that if we were going thru tolls, we would be unable to pay cash. Unless we paid for the EZE pass ($226 incl taxes and fees) then we would be charged $25 for each time we went thru a toll plus the cost of the toll. We were staying with family in Arverne meaning frequent use of tolls. We were astounded - how can that kind of premium be added at pickup with no warning (e.g. we had booked the car 2 months in advance with no notice re additional cost of EZE pass.. We were also treated with shame and guilt that we would even question these charges. We would like some explanation why you would inflict this kind of usury on an unsuspecting client who rented from you in good faith. Local Rental InsuranceCons:Was not allowed to rent the car due to them changing their local rental policy. The counter ladies instructed me that I had to have full coverage, on my own(I do not own a car, but carry non owners insurance). The non owners coverage that I have used for 10 years was not acceptable either. This was not in their online documentation, I had that coverage. I walked across the room and rented from anothe carrier and, while in line, watched the counter attendants turn away every group of people who had a reservation. No one understood why the policy had changed and, even though I had purchased collision insurance thru the kayak rental(which was the only full coverage I didn't carry), but apparently that wasn't acceptable either. There was no opportunity to purchase the insurance, and no solution. I have no idea how this company can operate this way, but know that they have lost my business and a lot of others.Reviewed Oct 17 2016

Car clean and reliable, location sketchyPros:The car was great. I didn’t have any issues, it was a good size, reliable, all around good for the money.Cons:I had a significant issue with payment. This location charged my card almost $200 more than they were supposed to. Although the issue was eventually resolved and the money was refunded, this definitely gives me pause about renting with this company again. Also, make sure your tank is full when you retrieve the car. I forgot to do so and realized it was only filled halfway and had to spend almost $50 filling it up before I returned it. Also, the location is pretty dirty. If I didn’t have the issue with my card being overcharged I wouldn’t have any issues with returning here, but that is definitely a concern.Reviewed May 26 2018

Cons:As a resident of NYC area, the "fine print" about 150 miles per day maximum was a surprise. The pay before hand was not useful. The car was rented due to an auto accident, and the initial contract for a few days was prior to learning about the insurer paying for the car. The extension of the rental could not be done through the insurer. The abrupt phone call on Thursday April 13th in the afternoon about the immediate need to return the car was highly inconvenient. When I called he 718 # back, full voicemail. Where was no explanation for this demand. If the car had a safety issue, why did Advantage rent it to me? if the temp plates were due on 19 April, why the return on the 13th? if there is a reason for this demand, why not explain? The car had a "low tire" warning, left rear, but there tire appeared to be fully inflated.Reviewed Apr 16 2017

Pros:Location did not have car when I arrived, had to wait for about four hours at rental car location for a car. Once I picked up the car is smelled heavily of marijuana smoke, no discount was offered. Rental car location did not clean car, I had to disinfect the car myself. When I tried to return the car I called the location multiple times and they did not pick up, instead they sent me an email address to contact to contact the agency, I emails and have not heard anything back yet (it’s been two days). If there were a lower rating I would give it.Pros:Nothing staff is rude. The absolute worst.Cons:I picked up my car WITH my car insurance information (which they require in NYC. Totally bogus. No other renter requires that) my insurence had no experation date... with out the date I wasn't allowed to rent. I asked "how do we move forward?" The desk worker literally threw my credit card and lincense at me and said "come back with an experation." I rented from Enterprise. And it was great. I would NEVER rent here. This was my third time; all in different states. Horrible experiences. Shame on me, I guess.Reviewed May 16 2017
