Pros: It's great to sleep on tatami mats and take a bath in the furo. The price is hard to beat, and the owner is very friendly. The breakfast was delicious, and it's a short walk to Nikko Tobu station.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Good place, good service, nice and clean
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The owners were really friendly and helpful. They were so accommodating with everything, for example we arrived after hiking in the rain before we could check in and the owner gave us a cup of tea and got out a shoe dryer and dried our boots! It was quiet and the rooms were really cosy.
Cons: It was perfect!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Despite language barriers, it felt like a second home, being hosted by the most gracious, the most kind and most helpful elderly couple Shizuo and Keiko-san. We were there for a short two days, but they ensured that we were comfortable and had everything we needed. We were offered a ride to and fro the JR station to the inn so we didn’t have to lug our luggage around. Also, the breakfast set was amazing — a traditional Japanese breakfast prepared by Keiko-san, it gave us a truly local Japanese experience which my companion and I will never forget. If you are coming to Nikko, look no further, this is the place to live in that will make your trip worthwhile. I will definitely be back!
Cons: NA
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent hosts! wonderful house! Great value! Sizuo and Keiko will go the extra mile to help you and make sure you enjoy your time in Nikko, including coming to pick you up from the train station. The rooms are simple and very lovely and they have an onsen in the house! Just fantastic.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Most wonderful guesthouse owners you can think of
Cons: The location is not the best (20 min walk to station and 45 min walk to temple entrance) and you need to get used to the Japanese futon beds (ask for three layers)
10,0 Excellent
Pros: This was the favourite place we stayed in in Japan. We were treated like family by the old couple that run this place. We were picked up in a car for a 5 min journey to the accommodation and also took us back when we left. It is 15 min walk to the station (only real way to get there - from there you can get a bus to the heritage area or 30 min walk total, we preferred to walk). Even though their English isn’t great that doesn’t stop them to help you out with information or explaining the bathroom, breakfast etc. On that note, the breakfast is delicious and great value for everything you get! The room is a traditional Japanese room which is a great way to live their culture. Tea and water is provided as well as a fridge if you want to get some stuff from supermarket (no combini nearby). We feel very blessed to have stayed here :)
Cons: Absolutely nothing at all.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Shizuo and Keiko were so kind with us, everything was perfect. It's a quiet place, we slept well. The breakfast (japanese style) especially was so good! Thank you Keiko & Shizuo!

Pros: Hospitality
Cons: None
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The owners were the kindest hosts in our whole vacation. The property gave us the opportunity to experience a real Japanese house. The rooms are big and as i said very traditional, much better than they appear in the picture. The hospitality of them was the best part of the stay. We felt very welcome and taken care of. Beautiful Japanese tea set welcomed us in the room along with the traditional Yukatas. At the end, the host offered us a ride to the station.
Cons: It is about 10 minutes walking from the station, but it was totally recompensed by the beautiful Japanese experience and humble hospitality.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The hosts are really nice! Definitely order the breakfast, it is delicious and traditional, we loved it! The host gave us ride to the train station early in the morning! In the bathroom there is even a small privat onsen!

8,3 Excellent
Pros: Good location, good breakfast, really great Onsen baths which we absolutely loved!! We enjoyed the stroll along the river gorge from the hotel to the city center that the owner recommended to us.
Cons: The room was really small for three people and the bathroom is really tiny, just one of those one-piece bathrooms like found on ships. This made it slightly uncomfortable. Definitely ok for two people though.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very friendly, the private onsens were great and our room was very clean. The major shrines are only a fifteen minute walk away.
Cons: Room looked a tiny bit dated, but it did not bother us at all.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: We loved the baths, so relaxing! The owners of this hotel are just lovely and kind; they offered to drive us to the train station, just a class act all the way. Delicious breakfast, I would highly recommend, fresh baked rolls everyday!
Cons: That we had to leave, it was the best part of our honeymoon in Japan staying at this lovely place.
7,5 Good
Pros: the staff are very nice and the breakfast is very good. it is a little far away from the CBD. you should need to buy a pass bus ticket.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The bath house was amazing. Breakfast was excellent. I asked for a taxi as I was checking out, the older fellow behind the counter said he'd give me a lift. Enough english to get by. Very pleasant.
Cons: Didn't like the pillows, had to steal one from the next bed. Location also wasn't the greatest, about 2 miles from the station.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Where do I start? It was incredible from the moment we stepped out of the taxi – met by a sea of smiling faces and warm welcomes, ushered inside and served a drink while our bags were taken to our room. The room was beautiful (Ginryu - twin with private outdoor bath) – and that outdoor bath was amazing! Each night we were served a different traditional meal in our own private dining area (the food was delicious!). The hotel is tucked away in a beautifully quiet area, away from the main street, so using their complimentary shuttle bus to get around is recommended. The majority of the staff do not speak/understand English very well, but they tried their best to communicate, which we greatly appreciated as our Japanese proficiency is not good at all. Overall superb service, food and accommodation. I would definitely stay here again!
Cons: Absolutely nothing!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The overall layout is very good
Cons: Too much Food
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic service and food. We had a lovely room with private bath, had a very relaxing stay. The courtesy bus from the station and temples was a bonus, it worked very well! Overall the hotel was very private - we barely saw the other guests which was nice!
Cons: We chose a Japanese-style room, and I probably would not do that again. I am not built for futons, and not having a bed to collapse in on arrival was hard! But this is not on the hotel at all - we should have just chosen western style.
6,3 Good
Pros: Cozy beds, beautiful green views.
Cons: too noisy. staffs chatting, next door ‘s sound and vacuum before check-out are my impression of this accommodation. we can’t say private dining room by same reason.
7,5 Good
Pros: Great location, private onsen was nice, dinner was delicious. Staff very helpful.
Cons: Meals felt rushed at times, was not offered a drink menu for alcohol.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Great location, and deluxe room was wonderful and spacious with a private onsen. Staff were very helpful and quick to respond to all requests.
Cons: Pillows on the bed were a bit uncomfortable.
8,3 Excellent
Cons: Breakfast and dinner were included, japanese style. Looked very much vegetarian, and we had to cook stuff by ourselves. May seem interesting, but as my wife says, if I must cook my food myself, I better stay home :-(.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Room was big and comfortable, service was good, response to queries and requests was very prompt, onsen was beautiful, breakfast and dinner was good as well.
Cons: Just a bit far from the station, but they did have shuttle pickups in the day which was great, just not the night time.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Japanese style room, very large, three rooms, actually, including an enclosed porch for sitting. Meals were excellent and beautifully presented. There was good transfer service available getting from the train station to the hotel.
Cons: The staff was not prepared for English speaking guests. It was sometimes difficult to communicate. No English language services on the room TV, either.

Overview Reviews
With a stay at Asaya Hotel in Nikko, you'll be a 5-minute walk from Kinugawa Onsen and a 4-minute drive from Tobu World Square. Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, a library, and a safe deposit box at the front desk. Free self parking is available onsite.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Service was great, facilities was plentiful and catered for all ages, onsen was one of the biggest I've seen in Japan, buffet breakfast and dinner had a super wide spread and variety, plus the food quality and taste was great as well. Will definitely recommend to people who want to stay around this area.
Cons: Perhaps just that this onsen hotel was a bit more mass and commercialised style, thus the scale of the hotel and the facilities were huge with a large number of rooms, which will prob not suit the traveller who is looking for a more traditional and 'authentic' onsen experience I would say, but depends on the traveller.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The entire experience was perfect! All the amenities provided additional comfort! The food was very good but I wish some items were replaced quicker. But we ate at the second serving so I guess it was harder for the hotel staff.
Cons: The distance of the indoor public baths.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: the Japanese bedroom and the nice and smiling staff
7,1 Good
Pros: hot spring
Cons: obsolete room facilities, the air purifier does not work

Cons: Nothing to mention
7,9 Good

9,6 Excellent
Cons: Location is fairly inaccessible
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Kaiseki dinner was amazing. Peaceful resort.
Cons: Communication was a bit difficult in English. Coming from Tokyo it was a bit far.
4,2 Okay
Cons: Unfortunately not worth the value for money. We’ve paid nearly USD 500,00 for one night expecting a high end experience at a traditional ryokan. However we found a worn out place , in urgent need of renovation. We couldn’t properly sleep as could hear people talking from the rooms next to ours. Bathroom utilities very old , and in need of a deep cleaning, same with private Onsen utilities. Onsen kit was a plastic bag , plus a very old body towel. Dinner Kaiseki style was ok . Breakfast was totally Japanese , not even coffee was served . Staff was friendly but very few could speak English. We’ve been to ryokans for this price range before and we’ve always had an exceptional experience, unfortunately we can’t say the same about Honke Bakyu .
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was excellent! It looked like we were in a dream
5,8 Okay
Pros: The private hot spring was very spacious and has a nice view of the river
Cons: The room we are put in had large number of bed bugs appearing from the crack in the wall and from underneath the tatami mat (we did not realize that these are bed bugs at first so we did not ask for the room to be changed). When we woke up in the morning there are several blood spots on the bed sheet. Few days after staying at the hotel we develop strong allergic reaction most likely caused by bites from these bugs.

Pros: Its amazing to have been staying in this historical accommodation.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely and quiet and next to the most beautiful river.
Cons: Nothing.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Location is really near the main temples. They gave us kimonos while we were there and the japanese baths were amazing. The staff is really nice. Highly recommend this place to stay.
Cons: Is not near the city center, but is not a negative point, the hotel is near the main attractions of the city, which are not in the city center. The only thing I think they could offer is the breakfast, as we already played near €90 for sleeping.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Great location! Within easy walking distance of Toshogu Shrine. Lots of good options to eat in the area. There are two onsen on site at the hotel.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: This was our favourite hotel in Japan (3 weeks travelling). It features a beautiful onsen, you get a yukata, free green tea and a simple yet good western-style breakfast. The temples are only 10 minutes away on foot, so it's the perfect location by the river. The staff were very friendly. We got a map from them. Also the most incredible meal from all our trip in Japan was taken 5 min away at Bell (shojin ryori, beware that it takes 45 min to prepare, more than worth it). We regret not staying for 2 or 3 nights in Nikko.
Cons: Our fault: we arrived after 7 pm in Nikko and there are no buses at this time! It is around 30-40 min walk from the station, uphill. Consider if you have luggage like us.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed in Turtle Inn Nikko for 3days/2nights. It was awesome! We would totally stay here again. The owners were very friendly, they even gave us a map with details of things to do near the inn. The room was very cozy. It has everything we needed and more (like yukata, power strip, etc). The inn was in a quiet & pretty neighborhood. I loved the sound of the river just behind the inn. It's also walking distance to the famous complex of shrines & temples. There's a Lawson walking distance to it too, plus some good restaurants, so food was not a problem. The onsen was a nice bonus.
Cons: Nothing in particular. Everything was great!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The host was extremely friendly, great to have the hot baths, good sized room. They also have a dog who is lovely.
Cons: Showers finish at 9:30am which is fine unless you are not an early riser. They were however very lovely and allowed us to shower when we got up a little late

Pros: Loved our stay in a traditional Japanese room. Airy and comfortable, with a view of the river and mountains. Breakfast was great (both Western and Japanese), and we had a kaiseki meal that was fun and delicious. Staff was welcoming and helpful. Location is good -- we could walk into town and to the historic sites. Can definitely recommend!
8,3 Excellent
Pros: A nice hotel ryokan with outdoors onsen and big and comfy room. Excelente dinner and breakfast
Cons: Pillows could be better
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The service is excellent. We arrived on a rainy day. The staff help us dry the shoes by the shoe dryer immediately. Very kindly service.
Cons: We ordered Japanese style and Western style breakfast in the morning. It is a little strange the Western breakfast was placed inside the Japanese tableware.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The Onsen was great! They had 3 outdoor onsens, and one of them is a Jacuzzi. There were also a lot of great toiletries in the Onsen that we could use to pamper ourselves. We ended up buying some of the products from their gift shop which also provide tax free shopping. We could also relax on the massage chairs after the onsen bath. Walking distance to the temples and shrines so we were able to leave the car at the hotel and not have to pay parking fees if we were to drive closer to the temples/shrines. The meals were tasty and filling, we especially like the fresh yuba which was so creamy. The hotel also sold entrance tickets to the 3 main temples/shrines, which is useful to avoid queues during peak periods. Very friendly and helpful staff. I like that they have a special area for us to sit down and enjoy some tea and sweets while checking in instead of standing at the front desk. For ladies, we get a choice of yukata as well.
Cons: Not much.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly and we enjoyed being able to eat our meals in our room since we have a baby. The onsen was also beautiful and clean. The location can't be beat either! So close to many of the main sites.
Cons: The room was a little bit dangerous for a mobile baby as there were lots of breakable items within reach! That is typical of a ryokan though so I didn't mind too much!
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Very delicious dinner and breakfast. Nice view from the room and convenient location.
Cons: Room is bit hot in the night. Although we shut down the air conditions but still feel pretty hot when sleeping.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: After admiring at the gorgeous shrines and temples, and the kanmangafuchi abyss, I was greeted in the ryokan with hot matcha and sweets, and a really friendly manager. What can be more comforting in a wintery afternoon. Yes, soaking in onsen while admiring the mountains and rivers, and the sumptuous dinner. The staff is amazing and the location is superb.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The staff was fantastic! All of them were simply wonderful! Spacious room with a great view. A classical hotel with an onsen - very good quality. Close to the World Heritage sites.
Cons: It's a bit older, but it didn't disturb much.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: We stayed 3 night at Senhime Monogatari october/November 2018, and It was a wonderful experience. You can’t judge the hotel/ryokan by normal western preunderstanding. The hotel has it’s own norm, own speed, own way of doing things and own philosophy. We got a fantastic and positive lesson of practiced omotenashi, the special Japanese service philosophy. We chose a Japanese styled room, with private bathtub, a kind of outside room with a view to volcano mountains, mountain river and yellow/red leafs on trees. The Japanese styled room was equipped with tatami mats, traditional Japanese low chairs and table. We got kimonos, and different kimono overlayers to chose from, Japanese wooden clippers and simple indoor filt shoes. The bed was made for us every evening during our diner downstairs. And removed during the breakfast. We slept on mats on the floor, it was a little uncomfortable for us and we adjusted with an extra mat. The breakfast and dinner is a whole story for it’s self, and giving a massive value to the stay. This is Japanese food at it’s best. The hotel has a Shuttlebus service to Tobu station, and within 100 meters there is bus stop no. 8 to the lakes and falls. Notice that the bus on busy days will be packed at stop no.8

Cons: Aircon need to be cleaned, coz it smells like something died inside when u enter the room.
7,5 Good
Pros: It is so nice to have a hot spring experience.
Cons: Need some meats of the breakfast.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: I had difficulty getting the the Ryokan at first but when I finally arrive all my stress melted away. Friendly staff who were very helpful and attentive. They even showed me on a map where popular tourism sites are. For a 1,000 yen, you can have breakfast in the morning that is healthy and refreshing way to start off your day. Also, a hot spring on the property which is perfect after a long day exploring Nikko. A walk away from famous Shrines. My advice make sure you get off at bus stop 8 or 9.
Cons: Maybe some directions provided for the guests. The address doesn’t work with some apps.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Such friendly hosts always ready to help. If you want to see the river when you’re in the Onsen make sure you use it before dark ;)
8,3 Excellent
Pros: It has a private onsen, which can be used if vacant (suggested max time of 30 minutes). The tatami floor is nice. The location is good, with a lot of green and the river right next to it. Many tourist attractions are close by.
Cons: It has quite thin walls, it was quite noisy between the other guests (clsoing doors and such), the river and the cicadas. The room was very bright in the morning, as it lacks curtains (paper windows to darken only).
8,3 Excellent
Pros: The price was right and it is in a quiet neighborhood close to the heritage sites. The private sauna was a nice surprise.
Cons: The door of the sauna slams shut, which we could hear throughout the night – it’s probably a simple fix on the hotels part...
8,3 Excellent
Pros: I have been here several times over the last 20 years. Friendly service and close to all the sights. The tatami rooms are great as is the onsen.
Cons: Everything was good - no problems whatsoever.
7,5 Good
Pros: Bath room
Cons: Location. Difficult to find place to eat near there

9,2 Excellent
Pros: We loved the friendliness of the staff, the food was amazing, the views were superb and the onsen relaxing! Not much we could fault about this wonderful accommodation. The area in autumn is amazing and well worth a visit. There are lots of walks and a waterfall to visit. The bus trip from Nikko is outstanding and well worth the adventure. It is winding uphill through amazing scenery and although it takes 80 minutes it is easy to navigate - get on at the train station (1a) and alight at the final stop (#46). It costs 1800Y per person but luggage space is limited.
Cons: It may seem expensive, but is definitely worth it.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful and cosy yet modern ryokan. Friendly staff. Scenic hiking paths nearby. Outdoor onsen is really nice. Delicious meals !( half board )
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location, less tourist because it's about 30-40 minutes driving from the bridge and temples. Beautiful scene with amazing indoor/outdoor onsen. Japanese style dinner and breakfast were delicious. The town is small so you can walk around taking picture while wearing a Yukata.

Pros: Hotel staff are very friendly and speak very well English which make it's easier for foreign customers. Food are very good and service is nice.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Great
9,2 Excellent
Pros: beautiful scenery, great hot spring, excellent service. the first choice hotel for the future journey to Nikko.
Cons: it would be greater if air conditioner could be controlled in the room.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: very good onsen with nice views and plenty of space. Food was great
Cons: Should add a mixed bath with more natural bath. the outside bath are in wood only and look like small swimming pool
5,8 Okay
Pros: Dinner and breakfast were both lovely and well-presented. The shuttle to and from the train station is handy - because otherwise it would be a nightmare to find.
Cons: It was very expensive and I didn't feel it was worth the money. The hotel is looking very tired and dated, and the room had dirty marks all over the walls. There was also scaffolding up in the lobby and onsen, which, while understandable, was a bit disappointing and took away from the general atmosphere. I also couldn't help but feel like because we weren't Japanese, we weren't very welcome. I tried not to let it bother me, but dinner felt a bit awkward because it was clear that they put all the non-Japanese people at the tables near the back and all the Japanese groups next to the windows looking out into the forest. It was such a clear divide that it felt uncomfortable - and I could hear the other guests talking about the same thing as well. The onsen was so sulphuric that the smell was wafting through the whole hotel. After using the indoor bath (there were too many bugs outside and floating on top of the water in the outdoor baths) my hair smelt like sulphur (rotten eggs!) for days after. Overall, nice hotel but definitely in need of a facelift.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Lovely, definitely one of the best experiences we've ever done.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast buffet has variety of choices and delicious, the view of room is stunning and hot spring is big and comfort
8,8 Excellent
Pros: breakfast and dinner on both nights was a huge delight. spring baths were good.
Cons: hotel is a little difficult to access without shuttle from Nikko which is only provided once a day by the hotel each way
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The food. This is the second time I've visited this place, and the food is still just as amazing. The outside onsen was also incredible- luckily it snowed during my stay, and the onsen is amazing in the snow! You can see deer and monkeys from the onsen and from your room windows, and the hotel provides binoculars and information on local birds so you can do some bird-watching through the huge glass windows too.
Cons: Everything was great.

8,3 Excellent
Pros: helpful and friendly staff. clean room. even if it was a smoking room, we requested deodorizing and it was fine. good location -- that was the main reason we chose it.
Cons: breakfast -- would have preferred a japanese breakfast. we understand it's not a luxury hotel, so even onigiri would've been ok. would be nice the hotel didn't have any smoking rooms, but realize that seems to be impossible in japan.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast offered was very good, (despite the booking having no breakfast listed). They do supply one and it was very good and included in price of room. The staff were fantastic. They were very kind and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. They helped myself and my group with many things whilst we were there. The bath was wonderful and the rooms clean, neat and tidy. The location was perfect. I would definitely both recommend this ryokan and would stay here again.
Cons: Nothing really.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Very good location next to the world heritage. Nice staff and nice room.
Cons: Breakfast was good but not exceptional. A bit expensive for what it was.
7,9 Good
Pros: The staff are extremely friendly and kind, they will help you the best they can. The room is perfect, gives you the amazing feeling of living like real Japanse people in a Ryokan room. And the location is superb!
Cons: The shower didn't work that well. We had two options: extreme cold or extreme hot water under the shower. Not very comfortable.
5,4 Okay
Pros: + Good hot springs + "Helpful" stuff. They try to do their best even when they do not speak english fluently
Cons: - Very poor breakfast - Not futon service (making the bed). I have been to more ryokans where this is included - Disappointed with luggage service after check-out. You have to pay for It (500¥) and only until 12.00pm. - Old room in japanese style ones with noisy refrigerator
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Very close to the bridge and to the most important temple of Nikko, this is a nice hotel where to stay. Staff is very polite and brakfast is continental. We had a 4 people room, slept on the futon and appreciated everything! Well recommended!
9,2 Excellent
Pros: We appreciate a lot the public bath and the experience in the room was very interesting, because it is a traditional japanese room. We also appreciate that the staff gave us a gift for our honey moon.
Cons: The staff is absolutely not flexible about the timing of picking-up the bags after check-out (13:00 o'clock). Because the main reason we led to Nikko has been the world heritage site, due to such a hotel policy we have had only few hours to visit the site, so we couldn't finish the visit as well.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Typical Japan furniture in room. Tasty breakfast.
Cons: Far away from train station, but you can use city bus.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly, helpful staff and amazing location! Can’t get better. The place was spotlessly clean. Bus stop right out front and walking distance to the bridge and Shrines. Nice Onsen too. Would stay here again next time we visit.
Cons: Nothing.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Everyone at the hotel was very accommodating. It felt like a truly traditional Japanese hotel, including the public bath, which I've never done before, and the to tatami mats and bed in the room.
Cons: The breakfast was not particularly good. I would have preferred something like soba noodles. But it seemed like a mixture of something to appeal to westerners.

Pros: Wonderful public onsen, nice and large room, awesome staff - felt like a king staying here! The breakfast and dinner buffet had a million choices and enough options for vegetarian or vegan. Highly recommend.
Cons: Only that we couldn't stay longer! Will need to come back again for sure!
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The food there was superb.. they offer buffet both breakfast and dinner.. we didn't expect a lot from the buffet but the taste of food was really good.. Onsen was good as well.. we enjoyed staying there.
Cons: A bit far from train station
7,5 Good
Pros: The Onsen was nice as usual. However, they did not have the taller seats for those with difficulty squatting low to sit. There were 4 different onsens and one outside. Also had a sauna and a tub of ice cold water with a scoop. Don't forget to take your own towels. The buffet was excellent with fresh sushi and kamameshi rice along with a lot of local veggies, meats and chicken. The ice cream was a delicious treat.
Cons: The shuttle service was not fully explained and was not free to or from the station as I thought when booking. Not knowing the location, we took a large bus and had to climb onto a large bus with our luggage. Cost for 6 of us with luggage was the same as a taxi for 3 of us. We took 2 taxi's for the convenience of loading/unloading the luggage. The twin beds was just a 6-8"mattress on a raised wooden platform about 8"-10 on the tatami. The platform was oversized so it was easy to hit your shins or stub your toes when climbing into bed.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We love authentic Japanese experience, onsen, futon, food. Location close to train station (7min by bus) & Edo wonderland.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The staff were amazing, the buffet dinner and breakfast were incredible!
Cons: A bit expensive for a futon mattress on the floor and couldn’t use the onsen because of my tattoos :-(
7,5 Good
Pros: Excellent food for breakfast and dinner. Lovely room.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Almost everything
Cons: No English news chanel
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Welcoming from the staff View from our room The quietness of the hotel We enjoyed our stay very much
Cons: This is not so much a criticism but Would recommend the hotel purchased new large fluffy white towels. This hotel is quaint but large dating back to the 80’s decor.Needs a refurbish It would do well to be Brought up to the 2020 especially givenJapan is hosting the Olympics in 2020. The clientele seemed to be of the older generation and felt a bit like a retirement village. Given the town of Kinugawa has many derelict hotels it would be a shame that the same fate would come to this one After 3 days of buffet dining on the same menu it would do well to change the menu. Breakfast menu could have incorporated just a bit more westernised
7,5 Good
Pros: Good choices of breakfast and dinner. Staff give good concern for food allergy of customer.
Cons: Slippery floor in buffet hall.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The dinner buffet is very good. A lot of varieties and all very yummy

4,6 Okay
Pros: onsen facility.
Cons: Looks and feels dated. expensive
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Great location right next to the train station. Easy access to buses to area attractions. Hotel staff friendly. Hotel nice and comfortable.
Cons: There was an extra fee for one kid even though we had requested two adults and 2 kids during booking with booking.com. That extra fee made the hotel expensive, especially since we shared existing beds and no extra towels were even given.
4,6 Okay
Pros: Two biggest advantages to this hotel are proximity to both train stations (which makes it pretty far from the temples btw) and the onsen downstairs. A rack with umbrellas for the customers’ use was also a nice touch. Very nice staff completes what I liked about the property.
Cons: The room was pretty large and arranged like wannabe ryokan which this hotel clearly is not. But while a bit strange it wasn’t unpleasant. The moldy smell in the bathroom however was literally suffocating. I would let it go since I was using the onsen anyway but unfortunately the towels reeked of the same unpleasant aroma and that’s the part that made my stay really memorable - not in a good way. Water pressure on the fourth floor was practically non existent and the comforter was not wrapped in a duvet but rather put on top of a sheet. I’m a messy sleeper so I would wake up under the bare comforter with a sheet bunched up next to me. Not hygienic. I’ve had way better experiences in cheap capsule hotels.
6,2 Good
Pros: Mega convenient if using the train. Literally right across the street. The room itself was comfortable. Check in/check out was quick.
Cons: Staff was OK but not overly friendly. Also when I asked if I could use their printer for a legal document that I needed to print and sign (and was willing to pay for this service) one of the front desk agents said they had no printer (!) Hard to believe that a hotel did not have a printer on hand. Walked across the street to the Tourist Info office in the train station where the gentleman bent over backwards to help me out. Bathroom had a urine-like odor
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Very good location and good breakfast
Cons: No
7,9 Good
Pros: The hotel is only one minute walk from Tobu Nikko station and JR station is just across the street.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Onsen and breakfast was good
Cons: Room rather dated and bathroom had an awful smell
7,9 Good
Pros: A few mins walk from Tobu station. JR station is just across the street. All staff was very friendly and helpful. Hot spring is spacious.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The size of the room and location
9,7 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is very walkable to all of the transportation in/around Nikko. Hotel staff speak enough English to do what needs to be done. The room was very nice. The hotel has restaurants of various types, which was great. Many locstions in Japan open late, so having breakfast early was a real plus. Dinner went until 8:30 -- also great for a busy sightseeing day. I dId not use the hotsprings, but it sounded nice. As a solo traveller, i found the amenities very convenient. Internet was good.
Cons: My room was a bit more expensive than I would otherwise have liked, but I think for the convenience it was worthwhile.
7,9 Good
Pros: Reminisce of the old days
Cons: The bed was uncomfortable
4,2 Okay
Pros: Nothing special. Not worth the price.
Cons: Everything standard. Bad service. Requested us to bring back room service plates and food left overs by ourselves to the restaurant. Of course we rejected and kept it the while time on the floor. No free water at wanna-be-onsen

6,7 Good
Pros: Great history and had the potential to be something like Raffles. This was no Raffles alas. Location great.
Cons: Not renovated to the degree that would be commensurate with the price. At this price I expected first class luxury but the rooms were tired and the service whilst friendly not quite polished. Dinner was very expensive so we ate out, which was hard because Nikko’s evening options were a bit limited. Breakfast was included in our rate and whilst simple was great. Could be so much better if they invested a bit of money and lowered the restaurant price.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Superb location! Minutes (by foot) away from the Nikko site!
Cons: The total absence of Japanese food (though the traditional French cuisine was very good)
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Authentic and great location. Roomy well appointed rooms.
Cons: High price of breakfast
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The 100 year old curry recipe was delicious The price for food was way too high but the steak house along its driveway was excellent ! The room is too hot if the steam heater is turned on as it was snowing the day of our stay
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The view are fabulous, staff are friendly and the location is fantastic.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Room 109 is a very comfortable large corner twin bedded room. It is in the annex building and more cheerful and bright than those In the original building as we saw a room in there too. This was built In 1873 as the first western tourist hotel in Japan So has a lot of old charm But does need some refurbishment.Staff is very nice and friendly.Food is very good western style.
Cons: If the staff spoke a bit more English.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Accomodation and staff
Cons: Booking.com have completely let me down..sending me a copy of confirmation I had never received..telling me I made the mistake of booking from Japan..incorrect I booked from auroral is.i was charged over AD 300 more then my original confirmation..in English..will not return my emails.more to come
8,3 Excellent
Pros: The staff attentiveness The relaxed environment. The old world décor and furnishings. Providing newspapers
Cons: Your pricing for in house meals and drinks was too high. We had 2 cocktails in your bar. Cost was higher than experienced anywhere else and we travel widely. Your breakfast cost appeared too high for us so we had breakfast elsewhere even though we wanted to try yours
7,5 Good
Pros: ambience
Cons: expensive food and bar
7,9 Good
Pros: Historic, classic feel, big room, lots of lounge areas, beautiful location in wooded area next to river, quiet, peaceful.
Cons: Old, in need of renovation & upgrades, very high prices for restaurant dinner & breakfast meals, not many places to eat close by for either supper or breakfast.

7,1 Good
Pros: Very close to the historic sites, walking distance to Toshogu and Rinnohji. The hotel gave info for tourism and restaurants, friendly host.
Cons: To walk to the restaurants in the evening was a bit of challenge, not so far, but not so much choice.
5,0 Okay
Pros: Great location. Walking distance to temples and Bridge.
Cons: Mattresses were extremely thin, felt like I was sleeping directly on the ground. Only came with two teeny tiny pillows for the three of us. When I asked the gentleman at the front desk for more pillows, he took one of the cushions from the chair and put it in a pillowcase. Worst night sleep I’ve ever had. When I flipped over the mattresses in the morning they had mildew blooms all over them. The hallway to the onsen was filthy and covered with spiderwebs. Website said they had a western style breakfast but when I requested it at the hotel the front desk man said “No, too late. Japanese only.”
10,0 Excellent
Pros: ***** food, pleasant home environment, very nice and helpful landlord, it would be pleasure to come again
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff is nice and helpful. Good location and everything was fine.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Impressive location. The hotel is surrounded by green trees and close to the world heritage site. I love to walk through a cool shady path that leads to the Shinkyo bridge and the river. Superb Onsen, both indoor and outdoor, a perfect relaxing. Great food, variety and a lot of dishes, so sorry that I could not take it all!
Cons: I sent the email to the hotel to inform them about our arrival and asked for the hotel's shuttle bus to pick us up. They didn't reply and not show up. So we have to take a taxi instead. Anyway, the shuttle bus service on the other days is fine.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: great location, inside of Nikko Temples territory, very attentive, warm-hearted managers. Amazing food! Lovely onset. Very clean room. Walls are thin so you can hear people in corridor and neighbors, but after sightseeing, onsen and dinner it is a very deep sleep anyway; and slightly hearing others gives a real feeling of ryokan. Staffs were very nice to provide me in and out transfer, even though I did not book in advance; meals were customized - no meat; hot sake as a service gesture - nice.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Location next to the World Heritage Nikko temples and shrines is fantastic. Food is excellent. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Love the onsen. Rooms are spacious and comfortable -- excellent futons for a great sleep.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely great place with free shuttle from and to the station. The "onsen" area is very clean and cozy. The location is really fantastic as it is not in the city but in the area with the park and old shrines so you can easily walk around all historical places and the bridge
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The room looked very nice and traditional, with view of lush trees from the window. It was spacious enough for all our luggages even with the futons laid out. There was tea and delicious little local pastries in the room when we arrived. We could fill our water bottles from the taps just outside our room. There was an attached WC and a separate wash basin in the large room. The room was clean and comfortable. The food was excellent, especially for dinner. There was an outdoor onsen, which looks more inviting than the indoor onsen. Shampoo, soap and lotion are provided in the onsen area. The hotel provides shuttle service from Nikko train station. We asked the tourist info centre to help us call them. There was also scheduled shuttle service to the station. Coffee is provided in the lobby area in the morning. Most of the staff didn't speak English but they are polite and helpful.
Cons: Wild monkeys also use the outdoor onsen. I saw one there on the day I checked out and it was quite aggressive. It even tried to open the door into the indoor onsen. My skin felt a little itchy after using the onsen the day before and wondered whether the water was clean. Unlike another onsen closer to Yumoto, the onsen water here didn't smell like sulphur and looked clear.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was excellent ! The food was delicious and the place was very relaxing.

Cons: Bathroom in our room smelled.

Pros: Location amazing - next to a dramatic gorge spanned by a pedestrian suspension bridge. Terrific views. Hotel staff were lovely - friendly, efficient, many spoke English. Great hotel for families - indeed for all ages. Many family groups with mum, dad, kids, grandma and grandpa. Japanese children all very polite and well-behaved. Entertainment and play areas for children. Having read criticisms about wifi we were not expecting much, but wifi was fine in the room with the unexpected bonus of a free hotel smartphone with unlimited data and calls for the duration of our stay! Great choice of food, both western and Japanese with local specialities - tempted to eat too much.
Cons: Can`t think of any negatives.
