Pros: The pool had an amazing view. Staff was very nice and very helpful.
Cons: Disappointed with the food. Very poor breakfast and the two restaurants weren’t as great as I expected. I was badly surprised when I saw on the menu meals like burguers and pizzas instead of major extraordinary local food. Lucky we found nearby restaurants with amazing local food. Also pillows on our bed smelled bad due to humidity (I guess). Finally, and this isn’t directly related with the hotel, the beach was crowded with local people trying to sell you activities so at the of first day we were avoiding going to the beach.
7,1 Good
Pros: Breakfast was large and inclusive
Cons: Expected the room to be bigger considering the price paid. No gym on site.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: + Location on the beach + Private beach with security + Very friendly and helpfull staff + Food in Cinnamon restaurant is great + Free honeymoon package (free lobster dinner on the beach, free champange bottle & free massage)
Cons: - Breakfast is ok but the same level as the evening meals
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Location Pool area Perfect swimming spot (almost no tides) Clean Delicious food Complimentary honeymoon dinner and welcome wine
Cons: Drain smell in the room More towels needed for the pool and beach

Pros: Destination Hotel!!! The Z hotel is a MUST! out of all the hotels we visited in Zanzibar, this is the only one we would return to. Everything was just perfect, rooms were immaculate, attention to detail and decor was out of this world. Thank you to the GM and her team, they were wonderful, helpful and did everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The pool area is so relaxing and clean. The beach is great for swims, and security ensures you do not get harassed by beach boys. We will be back

8,3 Excellent
Pros: Hotel is really clear and very nice ocean view. You can feel safe in the hotel. Location is greay
Cons: It is really expensive and nothing much to do on the hotel. Also breakfast could be better.
4,6 Okay
Pros: The rooftop bar was great. Good drinks for a good price and the stuff there was really nice. It was my boyfriends birthday while we were there and I arranged some things for him in advance and everything worked out fine. Thank you. The breakfast was ok. The dinner was really good.
Cons: The pictures on booking don’t show how the property really is. It’s really small, loud and more like a hostel than a hotel. The beach was really small and not what you would expect from the pictures.

Pros: Friendly staff, Front of the beach, located in tourist safe area, perfect breakfast, different daily menu for lunch and dinner with life band
Cons: The hotel located at beautiful beach front but don't have a private beach,, the locals at the beach are too disturbing and annoying, most of tourists try to avoid heading the beach because of them, hotel front beach has no privacy and relaxation.

Pros: Booked Doubletree Nungwi but the Kayak stuffed up the booking and created a reservation with a hotel in a different city.
Cons: Wasted over an hour on the phone to Kayak who refused to find us an alternate hotel in Nungwi. Still waiting for a refund. Terrible booking experience. A good way to ruin a holiday.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The stuff was extremely friendly and kind and gave great service. The hotel is very clean.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: My partner and I transferred here from a lesser hotel in Kendwa where we did not feel safe at all. The small bumpy roads through Nungwi were uncomfortable but when we arrived at the gates of the hotel we instantly felt safe. There was security checking who and what was in the taxi before we entered and when we got out of the taxi we were greeted by the extremely friendly staff. We received a lovey fresh fruit juice and a warm cookie on arrival and were checked in by a lovely guy called Hamad. We were upgraded to a pool view room and decided to go for the All Inclusive (extremely good value!!) It is a short 15 minute walk to the natural aquarium which was very informative and a nice experience. All hotel facilities were top notch and could not have been made feel more safe. There was so many friendly staff to tend to our needs at any moment
Cons: The only deterrent is the abundance of beach boys at the beachfront of the hotel. They are loitering and constantly hare adding tourists begging for money and trying to sell you souvenirs. The beach was also full of algae
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Staff are very friendly and helpful.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Everything was Hakuna Matata. People who serve were absolutely friendly, kind and nice to us. As honeymooners, we love their surprises very much and recommand to every couple who would like to come Nungwi Zanzibar. The sea is Indian ocean and has wonderful colors and clean water.

Pros: I fell in love with this hotel. Professional and caring reception staff , amazing experience with waiters who gave a good service and remember guest's name and food/drinks preferences, had amazing unexpected cake surprise on my birthday, 13 of September with special Zanzibar birthday song from friendly staff, that showed how much they do care about guests. Very beautiful and big hotel territory, clean and spacious rooms. "All inclusive " system so comfortable for guests. Viriocity of restaurants and food is very good: grill and pasta stations, alcohol and N/A drinks, sweets, icecream. Nice evening entertainments with disco. Location is perfect. Beach is clean, long coast for walk. Special attention to SPA ( thank you Ms. Ami for very professional spa treatments). I am very picky person but have to confess, I didnt had any single disappointment by staying in La Gemma dell'Est Thank you for unforgettable hospitality in Zanzibar. Will be back soon and definitely will recommend others. P.S. special thanks to reception and Hotel Manager Ms.Jessica for daily care and follow up about my stay and needs. Hakuna Matata!!!
4,2 Okay
Pros: The only positive thing I have to say about this hotel is the beach. The water was clear and clean. It was nice having free drinks included and the entertainment was good even though no one participated in dancing except me and my 2 friends. The only person we liked was Ian Ian from animation crew. He was a breath of fresh air and made us feel happy despite all the negative things. He deserves recognition for being an outstanding employee.
Cons: I had my iphone stolen out of my room while it was on the charger. We had only left for 1 hour to eat. All our other valuables were in the safe, thank goodness. There is instructions stating no staff are allowed in the room if any valuables are left out. Obviously that was not followed. I suspected it was the butler who replaced the waters because that was all that was different when we returned, other than my phone missing! I had to spend my last day of my vacation checking my luggage 3xs, turning over every surface to no avail. Then filing reports with security. I tried to use findmyiphone app but it had been switched off. This wasn't the only security issue we encountered. After going to the beach for sunset, the housekeeping was just leaving the room after turndown and they left our door unlocked!!! I missed lunch that day I was so upset even the next morning before departure I couldn't stomach another meal. The food was terrible. We had just come off a 10 day budget safari tour where we were served buffet every night and I expected the hotel food to be MUCH better than what was provided on the tour, but it was instead VERY below average. We tried to make a reservation at the Italian restaurant at the Pavilion (as we were instructed to do) and they never wrote our name down so we waited 20-30 min for a table! We are lucky they didn't just turn us down completely. The staff did not communicate effectively. They barely understood English. Our check-out was a nightmare. We were charged EXTRA for double occupancy room when we might as well have just purchased our very own rooms at a lesser rate! The pool had padding at the bottom which was coming loose made you feel like you were stepping on a bath mat. The beach staff did not come around enough to ask if you wanted anything. It was lucky to get them to come over ONCE all day. I would never recommend this property for any reason.

Pros: Everything! Food is amazing. Service is truly great. Location the best. Staff amazing from Mariam and Olga from Reception. Pavilion restaurant, Phillipe and Ambrose are the best! Muhidin was our best waiter. John is amazing with all our special requests for our babies. Beach bar Freddy and Steve the two beat barmen!!! Entertainment was hands down the best by Ismail and lead by Stephanie whom always was involved.
Cons: No bath tub for our babies
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous resort and you really feel like you're in paradise while you're there. The entertainment team on the beach were amazing and included us in all of the activities - even if we thought we didn't want to! Their energy and enthusiasm was infectious! Food in the buffet was good and there was always a good selection however the Pavilion was so hot that sometimes it was difficult to enjoy your food. Staff all over the resort were friendly and always smiling. Definitely would stay again if we could afford to!

Pros: The friendly, helpful and professional staf of this hotel, made me feel welcome and safe. I always returned to a perfectly clean room. I liked the quiet location with an amazing view, only a 30 min walk from the busier area.
Cons: nothing
7,9 Good
Pros: We stayed in delux room with a small private pool and easy access to beach. The room is extremly lovely with good decoration, always fresh and clean. The hotel is located a little bit remote to social life, suiatable for couples. Food and drinks are OK and fairly priced.
Cons: The staff is very slow and very quite, they say do it in 15 minutes, becomes 45 minutes. The barmaid does not know how to make coctails. The cleaning in the restaurant is not enough (the ash trays are full for 2 days)There is tide season in early August so can not swim, pools are small

Pros: Location and beach very nice with amazing view .Rooms were very clean and more than enough,Also pool bar and restaurant has very good service.Location and hotel is better than we saw in the photos highly recommeded!
Cons: The location is almost 50-60 kilometrea from airport its not far away but the roads are terrible we came with our vehicle that 50 kilometers taking around 2 hours and google map is not working properly in nungwe village.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The staff is lovely and do everything to make your stay enjoyable. Spacious, comfortable rooms with balconies. Nice pool area with lots of comfortable seating. They can arrange yours and transportation.
Cons: If you're looking to spend a lot of time if the beach this may not be the place for you. It's a 35 min walk to the beach and restaurants.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: The whole holiday experience was fantastic. The service was great and we enjoyed a most relaxing time. The meals were also great and the Christmas eve dinner was exceptional.
Cons: The first day of our stay was marred by an exceptionally rude guest who accused us of stealing his pool/beach towel and pool loungers. It turned out that, without our knowledge, the pool attendant had taken the guest's towel and moved the loungers for our use. We noticed that contrary to the hotel booking rules this rude individual (with wife and one child) helped himself on a daily basis to 3 loungers in the shade and two loungers in the sun. On the one day, they did not use the loungers for 6 hours. Rules must be enforced for guest convenience.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing. wouldn't stay anywhere else. The location is 100% amazing. There are 4-5 pools with swim up bars and a private beach, where people can't really bother you. On the public side of the beach, tour guides try to hackle you to buy a tour - both good and bad - it's easy to book something, but sometimes you get tired of saying "No Thank you." The staff are more than friendly, they remembered my name in the dining room. The rooms are spectacular with more footage than needed. Volleyball court to play, bocce ball. The food also was quite amazing.
Cons: Loved everything
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Its Africa. Dont expect real 5 European stars but the hotel is really good. Beautiful beach, nice swimming pools and friendly staff. Rooms need a bit renewal but they are still ok. Food is fine, only sea food is missing - i have found only octopus through 7 days stay.
Cons: The road from airport to hotel is horrible. Last 500 m is local road and the hotel should inmediatelly invest in it. If You pay 500 usd per night You might expect at least safe road!
5,0 Okay
Pros: Beach
Cons: Food offer was not great - wine on the all inclusive list not good at all. Towels and sheets not 100% clean. Poor customer service. Despite requesting 2 rooms close together at the time of booking - our children’s room was in a different block. Management just shrugged and said they couldn’t do anything but offered to move us to different rooms the following day.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The property is very large, so my family (parents and three grown up kids) stayed for two weeks and we didn't get bored just by staying at the hotel, taking walks on the beach and renting a boat three times to snorkel on the islands nearby (I swam with dolphins in the wild (they just showed up out of the blue), there are lots of live corals and beautiful fish and sea turtles (these are rare though)). All inclusive makes life really easy and the staff is very very nice. The rooms (ocean suite) were very large with great bathrooms and overlooking the beach and ocean. There are so many pools for young and old and one directly overlooking the ocean. The beach beds are everywhere, so you have a choice to sit by the beach (not on the public beach though which is good because you feel your things are protected by the hotel Masai guards :) ) or near any of the pools. I did feel safe every where though but it feels great to see Masai guards everywhere in the hotel as well and also exotic haha. The beach water was super warm and clear and the tide does not affect the swimming at this hotel which is important because the other top hotel on the end of Nungwi village which we were considering basically doesn't have a beach when its high tide and no water when its low tide. It seems like only the area around Royal Zanzibar (going down to Kendwa and up a bit) isn't impacted by swimming quality at low tide. What was good about this beach was also that it wasn't too close to the central public beach (all beaches are public, but the hotel is not in the busy public area, which is great). There is hotel entertainment for everyone. Yoga and stretching on the terrace overlooking the sea for me; beach volley ball, soccer, and waterpolo for my brothers; local music and performances in the evening for my parents (all free of charge). There is a spa beauty treatment (no sauna) right above the beach - great relaxing massage with ocean waves in the background.
Cons: Generally everything was really good. If I had to make some comments it would be - the rooms have aircon which works great, but it would be nice to have normal ceiling fans too, simply to circulate the air without having to turn on the aircon. The food was generally very good with a lot of choices between fresh fruits, salads, meat, fish, octopus, squid, etc... however if people are expecting typical bland European or Western hotel food, its not like that anywhere in Zanzibar. Its more African /Asian influence. There are lots of juices available, but it would be great if more of them were fresh. And the only real improvement that I could suggest would be to cool the main restaurant more, e.g. install ceiling fans or more aircon.
5,8 Okay
Pros: Location is amazing, regardless the 90’ trip from airport staff are friendly and willing to help
Cons: Badly maintained, and F&B is a complete disaster. Not a 5 star at all.
3,3 Mediocre
Cons: The staff was unprofessional and the service was just bad!! The water in the water polo pool was just 1/4 inch away from the electricity socket. This hotel is way too over rated! The beach was packed with annoying local beach boys. Very bad internet connection and the room had mosquitoes! The quality of the room was bad. The food was ok. The meat and fish was definitely not fresh!! Half of the price would be just acceptable, but not a cent more!!
6,3 Good
Pros: They have a nice pool and they have a wonderful beach.
Cons: For all inclusive it was WAY over priced. They served us raw pork and their fish was way over cooked. Bar service was incredibly slow and they ran out of tonic water, ice and other items. The grounds need a lot of maintenance.
Smiles Beach Hotel - Nungwi - Building

Overview Reviews
With a stay at Smiles Beach Hotel in Nungwi, you'll be by the ocean, within a 10-minute walk of Nungwi Natural Aquarium and Nungwi Beach. Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services, luggage storage, and laundry facilities. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours), and free self parking is available onsite.
7,9 Good
Pros: The staff were just wonderful, so friendly and helpful. The grounds of the hotel are lovely and it was a peaceful space to lounge and swim. This side of the Nungwi beach is much quieter than the other end. The rooms were great and clean, though there wasn’t a huge amount of space for luggage. Nungwi is a beautiful village and though touristy at the beach, still very traditional and under developed a stones throw away. I would urge you to explore a little further and make sure you spend money with the locals and not just at the big hotels... there’s a lot of money being spent by foreigners but sadly it doesn’t seem that much trickles down to the locals.
Cons: The hotel advertises a private beach- it really is not private! Everyone walks through and though this is quite entertaining and downright joyful at times... don’t expect a private beach. We had a difficult time at check-in and almost got charged $500 over as the hotel had the wrong amount... I had to get my booking details to prove that this was not the agreed amount. That’s not happened to me before at a hotel so do make sure you check on arrival. The food is ok for a few days but but they could definitely upgrade the menu to offer more variety and veggie items. IMPORTANT- there is no cash point in Nungwi Village and when we got a taxi to the closest ATM, It didn’t work! Take cash with you, I do think hotels should warn you this and can’t help but feel it keeps you spending money in hotels on your card than cash at smaller Zanzabari places. Finally- the road- be prepared for THE WORST ROAD of your life. It’s still worth it, but be prepared. If you’re staying in Stown Town first (which I’d recommend) do your land trips from here and then Nungwi is great for beach and boat time. Enjoy!!!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The whole staff was amazing to us. My friend was sick and needed to eat only specific food and they were happy and kind to help her and provided her everything she needed. The managar is amazing and always checked how we are feeling. We enjoyed our staying so much and when we come to zanzibar again we will be sure going to this hotel!
Cons: Nothing!
7,9 Good
Pros: Even all that happend, hotel managers and the owner were very nice and were trying to be helpfull and menage all mistakes as soon as possible. Hotel gave us refund of 5% for the rooms, they didn't charge us for any drinks or 3 dinners we had and they organized transfer to airport for free.Usualy it is paid like 40-50usd. Also, the ladie who works as manager... just started working there in the middle of our vacation and in just few days she already made some good changes and was very helpful. She organized for us a boat transfer to another beach for the best price and she is very helpful by organizing safaris and all other tours. Unfortunatly i don't know the name of one young boy who is working at reception... he was the most kind person in all and i am sorry i didn't gave him a bigger tip. At the end..despite all what happend...if they would change the cook and restaurant personal and give strictly instruction to room maids... i think i would book again the same hotel as everything else is menageable. Hotel is on a good location, close to shoops and some restaurants. So...keep in mind, this is not 5 stars hotel and hotel has a nice owner and menagers..just talk to them. I would recommend to the hotel just one more thing as they have many guests from europe... power adapters for the rooms should be a MUST HAVE.
Cons: Hotel forgot to organize airport pick up and they are bit unorganized with room reservations, room facilities and furniture. Also, they should imidiate change the cook and the personal at the restaurant as only one men was nice there and able to smile and....the cook? don't have to be professional cook to cook good. Breakfast options are few...or you eat kind of weird smelling eggs or kind of pancakes but for 3 star hotel that is ok. Paid dinner options are terrible and food is terrible...but we kept in mind..we are in Zanzibar and options in anything are very squized and small everywere. But there is one specialy weird thing that morning we found in the middle of our bed "sea urchin needles".Lot's of them.So check your bed before going to sleep. And one more thing, bathroom smell is like in the stable.I realy don't know why. hotel desciption they say they have a shop...but there is no shop, they also say rooms are soundproof but we were woken up the last night at 2am by our new room neighbours so we was going to ask them to be quite. But...

Pros: Location was phenomenal! It’s on the quieter side of Nungwi which is perfect if you’re looking for a relaxing holiday. The staff were great, friendly and helpful. It was a major plus for us that it’s a dry hotel (no alcohol). Overall a super pleasant stay! Should we visit again, we’ll be back at Smiles.
Cons: Restaurant needs a few more wholesome/homely meals and it was inconsistent.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff very nice Room comfortable and clean Buffet breakfast Swimming pool
Cons: Restaurant is expensive, little portions of food The beach in front of the hotel but nice beaches are not so far
6,3 Good
Pros: Property is located at walking distance from Kendwa beach which is really awesome.
Cons: The breakfast was poor. Most of the items listed in the restaurant menu were not available. Minimal choice of food and beverages. No alcohol is sold on the territory of the property. The bed wasn't comfortable at all and bed linen was old and torn. The staff is extremely slow and poorly trained. Most of the time we had to take our lunch and dinner next door at Doubletree by Hilton.
7,5 Good
Pros: The property is well located on the beach front of one of the best beaches in Zanzibar called Nungwi. It’s easy to access and see the vibrancy of the island. The pool is great with 24 hour access and the rooms are comfortable with all basic necessities and hot shower.
Cons: The staff although friendly, did not seem to be too attentive or available. There were times when I went to the reception to find no one there. The breakfast was unfortunately not good at all and lacked variety.
