Your guide to booking Zanzibar flights

From booking to airport arrival, find tips to help you plan your flight with more confidence.
  • For the best chance at a low fare to Zanzibar, aim to book around 26 weeks before you fly. That window historically saves about 10% versus last-minute pricing based on KAYAK booking data over the last 12 months.
  • For flights to Zanzibar, recent KAYAK data shows that stronger deals tend to be around R7 502 return. If you see a fare below that threshold, it's a good deal – book before the price climbs back up.
  • If you can choose when to go, aim to travel to Zanzibar in October. Return fares historically average R7 858 that month – typically the cheapest month to travel based on the last 12 months.
  • Before you book:

    • Check the route's typical price range so you can spot a deal.
    • Confirm baggage fees and seat selection costs on budget carriers.
    • Verify whether you need any travel documents beyond an ID.
    • Pick a departure airport, since your nearest may not be the cheapest origin.
  • Shift your departure to evening to save up to R1 504 per return. Evening flights to Zanzibar average R8 626 compared to R10 131 for afternoon flights. See the time-of-day chart above for the full breakdown.
  • Bag allowances vary by airline, fare type, cabin class, and route. On flights to Zanzibar, some airlines may include bags at no extra cost. For example, FlySafair includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy class, Airlink includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy class, and Air Tanzania includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy class. Always check the fare details before booking, since bag policies can change by ticket type.
  • When arriving at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Zanzibar, taking a taxi is the most convenient way to reach the city centre. Public transport from the airport can be unreliable and difficult to navigate in Zanzibar, though it is much cheaper than taking a taxi.
  • When taking a self-transfer flight, like South African Airways or Precision Airways via Nairobi or Dar Es Salaam, be aware of potential risks such as tight connection times, separate ticketing, and the need to collect and re-check baggage.
  • If you're travelling from Durban or Cape Town with FlySafair to save on flight costs, pack as lightly as possible. FlySafair tickets don't include a checked baggage allowance, which could increase the ticket cost by more than is affordable to you.

You get what you pay for. Uncomfortable seats, pay sky high prices for snacks, a passenger along side me was distressed and crying through most of the flight. I went to the tail of the plane to give to the distraught passenger. A stewardess approached me and I explained the situation. I was then charged R19 for a small bottle of water.!!!

A snack was advertised on my booking but when they came around I was told that is wrong. I wanted juice so I had to pay for it. I flew business class and was unable to book a business class seat on the website. Lucky there was still one available when I checked in at the airport.

I love FlySafair! PUNCTUALITY is what they do best, and thier schedule is so flexible, how they've structured Departure slots, one can decide to leave any time of the day. I am a coffee lover, I was astonished with their partnership with Boottleggers to allow us have specialty coffee on board, so wonderful.

Seats are very narrow. Boarding was delayed. The R85 voucher is insufficient for a wine and mixed nuts. Needs to be increased for "business class".

Our flight was canceled. The airline was apparently on strike.

Don’t waist money on priority. Changed the gates. Then let everyone through while priority row was twice as long. Got sooner to my seat jumping to the end of the line

Old planes and lack of attention to detail. Horrible experience.

Very good experience considering that is low cost company. Good value for money.

Make some provisions for non-disabled elderly people who don't require assistance necessarily but would appreciate not having to walks long distances or stand for prolonged periods of time. For example: Seats close to boarding gates. Not being required to climb down and up stairs to board and deplane if in rows 17 upwards. Not being required to stand in long queues in boarding tunnels waiting to board. Priority fast track through security points to avoid long queues in departure halls.

Great airline. Will use again. Keep up the great work though and maintain your customer retention. And please keep an eye on the bottom line and stay in business for decades to come and grow from strength to strength.

Because of the long lay over hour, Rwand Air offered a free hotel accomodation and transport. This was highly appreciate d

Pleasant, relaxed flight. I had 2 seats to myself, which was a bonus. I couldn't find a flight tracker ap so I could know where we were but that's a minor complaint. On the plus side, the passenger announcements did not come through my earphones but were on main speakers only. That was a nice touch.

Flight delayed by 3 hours 45 mins and no explanation given or apology. Rebooked on a flight departing to final destination 48 hrs later and baggage not delivered.

My outbound flight was grounded in Lusaka so we never made it to Paris. DO NOT fly this airline you will be stranded and your plans will be completely disrupted

Inflight entertainment with electronic charging stations can help during a long flight.

The flight was delayed with no notice. No inflight entertainment. Communication is vital in any business.

Poor communication: Flight come directly to kigali , didn’t come via mumbasa. Favouring to Rwandan passenger to move from economic to bussiness class after flight depart. Where they don’t asked other older passenger who need more comfort. Rude staff : chekin airport at Mumbai. Talking in local language (marathi) while serving and no sorry no thank you attitude.

The crew members were just okay ,but the food and entertainment need to be improved

No properly information for gat at Tanzania airport, on board written c7 so we were waiting c7 gate, suddenly our name is announce that gate c9 is waiting for us, so thats pooorrr communication

As I have already sent the messages to the head of Air Tanzania regarding the money they made us take at the airport it is pure scam they took more than $300 so that he let us enter the plane and the reason because we have Burundian passports! For foreigners I strongly advise you not to trust this agency

The airline cancelled my flight and as a result I had to book thru another airline. Furthermore, I forfeited $20 with kayak.

The following is a review for a flight from Johannesburg to Washington, DC with a connection at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and refueling landing at Rome, Italy. The flight was provided by Ethiopian Airlines. There were two of us: me and my wife on this flight. Everything was on time. Enough legroom between the seats, I was able to stretch my legs and sleep for at least some time during the 14 hour second flight (19 hours in total for both flights). Very decent meals that included two lunches and one breakfast on the flight from Addis Ababa to Washington and one lunch on the flight from Johannesburg to Addis Ababa. The lunch choices were beef, chicken and fish, I think the vegetarian option was available as well, accompanied with beans. The breakfast was a choice between egg and pancake, accompanied with a fruit salad. The egg breakfast was awesome, it came with a scrambled egg and a sausage. However, my wife mentioned unusual taste of the pancake breakfast meal, by all means those were not pancakes. What wasn't good: Externally initiated commercials on the infosystem screens, you couldn't turn the screen off. These commercials were accompanied by loud and annoying music, transmitted through the entire cabin. Obviously, there was no escape from this music as well. Additional moment: on the flight from Addis Ababa to Washington, DC, we landed at Rome for refueling. This was totally fine and it was in the flight itinerary. But, the flight attendant asked me to straighten the seat while we were at the steady position during the refueling. I can't rationalize this order except that some people just like to be a boss of some kind. Keeping the light lit in the economy cabin while keeping it dimmed in the first class also didn't improve my and my wife's feelings. Overall, the services were very good and the flight, despite its longevity, went on very smoothly.

The TV wasn't working No music for the whole flight from JFK to LOS It was too burring.

I had a memorable experience. I dont have any comments at this time regarding waht could be better.

They only gave us 30 minutes to make an international connecting flight. We didn’t make the connection but they did do a good job rebooking us despite the chaos. Our bags didn’t make it back and their process for customer support is pretty bad when it comes to luggage.

Food was really not appealing. There was a blocked sink in the toilet. Toilet is cramped and the wall between the 2 toilets are not secured properly.

Plane was late with no information or announcement … had to walk up n downstairs.., had not communicated this … and ppl had suitcase to carry .

My entertainment screen wasn't working and they couldn't fix it.

It is just ok, the sits are very uncomfortable, the temperature too low and there weren’t blankets. The food is mediocre and there are no screens to watch movies.

The seats were quite uncomfortable despite having good legroom. The 350s are quite nice but the problem is on the old 777 aircraft. Special meal requests are not catered for as they should. They never had any ice for drinks.

I've never been served three bread courses in a single meal before. Was really impressed by the novelty of that.

It was good ,I enjoyed it also crew were very respectful and patient waiting people parking their belongings.

Flight was late! Why ? No one seemed to know. Looks like the planes windows were never cleaned. My phone camera refused to take a picture of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Horrible airline that charged me $300 for my luggage saying my bag was excess luggage when that flight was super empty. Absolutely ridiculous never flying with them ever again!

Overall good experience but for long distances there really needs to be more room.

For a long haul flight, the seats were too narrow. Paid for extra legroom but wish I could have paid for width! I was pressed against another person for the whole donation of the flight.

Delayed by 4 hours with inadequate advance notifications which caused us a lot of consternation and angst. I will never fly or recommend your airline again

Flying portion was fine. Below average comfort. We had 2 canceled flights and got stuck in 2 cities which took us 3 days to get home. Kenya hasn’t done anything or even reached out to us after complaining.

Staff and service on board is always exemplary. Food however could be better.

Fight excellent but we were not contacted when flight departure was changed to 4 hours earlier; which caused us to almost miss our flight

They should improve their time management and how to reschedule flights in order to avoid long stopovers
