Lead us on then wouldn't provide us with a carPros:NothingCons:We were not warned on the website that our debit card would be rejected, and when we spoke to the representative there on the phone they said it wouldn't be an issue. When it came down to paying they refused my card, refused my partner's card, and said no one else would allow us to use a debit card for car rentals. Enterprise across the street rented to us with debit cards and we paid $100 less. The man running the front desk was rude and unhelpful and when we would ask questions he simply crossed his arms and shot us down. We had an earlier rental time than he said we did and dispite us showing our call log that we clearly spoke to their hertz office the day before he said that was not his problem and if it had happened it would have been changed. No car available + extremely poor customer servicePros:NothingCons:The fact that there was no car available for a confirmed reservation plus no attempt to help us out - even if the lack of cars is "not their fault" - has stopped me from ever considering using Hertz again. I am also very wary of using a third party solution like Kayak as well, if the likelihood of having a car is not a guarantee when booking through such a site. Overall a tremendously poor experience with Hertz that showed their little care for the actual customer and more of an interest in themselves. I will actively dissuade people from using Hertz in the future.Reviewed May 29 2017

Cons:I didn’t realize the pick up site was NOT at the airport. Not a huge issue since my son was available to pick me up and take me to the rental site. If it would have been after 6PM, it would have been a issue. At return, I had to leave the car on the 5th floor of the parking garage with no one to visually check the car when I handed over the keys. The elevator was non functional so we had to haul our luggage down 5 flights of stairs. Had we been told that when I called for drop off instructions, I would have dropped off my son and our luggage on ground floor before taking the car to the 5th floor. The office attendant was helpful directing us to the lite rail transit station but we had to wait since he was the only one in the office and was tied up on a phone issue with another client Luckily we had allowed extra timeReviewed Dec 31 2019

Arbitrary downsizePros:The guy I returned my key tonwas fab. Good stories about raising snakes and pet tarantulas. Very Portland.Cons:I specifically tried to rent a mid-sized car because I knew I had to pick up something that would take some space. I saw a lot of Versas on the listings page, which were categorized as compact or economy. I chose a rental--for more $$--that was listed as a Toyota or similar. I got a Versa, and when I explained to the guy at the counter (not snake guy) that I specifically went up a category to midsize to avoid the Versa, he said I could wait all day to see what came back or pay more for the Toyota they had available. He also said that Hertz has been recategorizing its Versas as midsize, but was vague about how and when this was happening. Felt like a bit of a bait and switch.Reviewed Sep 29 2017

They gave away our prepaid car and didn't have any othersCons:We caught the train from Seattle to Portland. We were pretty hungry by the time we arrived and so got a coffee and some food at a place around the corner. By the time we arrived we were a bit more than an hour arrive our estimated arrival time. When we arrived at Hertz the person at the counter said (that despite us prepaying for the car) that they had given our car away and they were all out of cars. Apparently they had done us a favor by holding it for an hour!! I have never had this happen before. In my experience when you pay to rent something you are free to use it how you want during that time - imagine someone rented out your hotel room if you check in late. I get it when you only have a reservation but we had already paid. Then came the worst customer service ever. The store manager Ryan Lange then blamed us saying "I'm sorry you were late" and then proceeded to tell us that "the door is that way". Think about when airlines overbook flights. They apologise and then offer a solution. Totally unacceptable.Reviewed Jun 15 2017
