Pros: From the time you arrive until you depart you will be treated with such respect and dignity and be totally spoilt! This is a five plus star boutique guest house experience. All of the staff are so helpful and polite.... greeting you, preparing your shoes, carrying your bags, parking your car, waving farewell etc!! When you arrive you will be introduced to your server who will be responsible for serving you breakfast and dinner in your room. This is a food experience in itself. These meals are meticulously designed, prepared and presented. I found that I was taking photos of almost every meal that was served. We opted for the Japanese menu but Western food is available. When in Japan why not try all sorts of different food experiences! Yoshimatsu is an amazing Japanese experience.... beautiful staff, exceptional food, natural hot springs ( Onsen), traditional Japanese rooms, beautiful water gardens, views of Mt Fuji ( and we were so lucky to see Fuji every day we were there!!). We cannot over emphasise how truly special this place is. Love, love, love Yoshimatsu!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was incredible. I felt like their only concern was that I was happy. They were thoughtful, warm, joyful, and considerate. Every single member of the staff there shared the same intent. The meals were amazing. Long, sensual, explorations of so many textures and flavors. The kaiseki for evening and breakfast were just amazing. The onsen were impeccably neat, placed in beautiful settings, and not aggressively hot, so you could linger. I tried 4 different baths and they were all wonderful. The Ryokan was just a great place tucked in a quiet little town.
Cons: Wifi was a little slow. But I didn’t realize that until the 3rd day of my stay...I was too busy savoring meals and melting into how spring water. The finish of the walls and furniture in the rooms is a touch dated. I would recommend this Ryokan to any and all. Just a great place.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: The most elegant Japanese style hotel with nicest service and dinner ever. Room guests can enjoy hot spring in a family cottage without surcharge. The open-air hot spring pond is very clean. In early morning a waiter will serve hot miso soup after you bath. Hondo ni sia wasei~

Pros: Loved the food. One of the best Japanese food experience I have ever had. It was just amazing. Outstanding service and of course the private hot baths.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Awesome kaiseki breakfasts and dinners. The facility was extraordinarily elegant and beautiful with a view of the majestic Mount Fuji from the family onsen. The staff was super polite, friendly and helpful. I loved my experience at Yoshimatsu.
Cons: nothing

9,6 Excellent
Pros: Walkable from Hakone-Yumoto station (although it can be a bit difficult given the tight road). Onsen was HOT! Very hot and great for skin and very relaxing. The dinner and breakfast were stunning with a good variety and plenty to have. Peaceful location. Staff was very personable and extremely attentive. Accommodates solo travellers on a weekend, which sometimes is an issue for ryokans.
Cons: Not the issue of the property, but the booking.com price did not include dinner which is an additional 5000yen. It’s worth it, but keep in mind the extra charge there. Because its a traditional type inn, outside the rooms can be slightly chilly.
9,0 Excellent
Cons: The dinner was a very traditional Japanese meal. If you don't enjoy seafood, you should let them know beforehand or not have dinner included.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Great service; dinner and breakfast were absolutly perfect
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The location was excellent, it was situated right next to the bus stop. A river runs next to the building, which gives fabulous views. Staff were friendly and helpful, English speaking staff available. The meals were great. This was an authentic Japanese experience.
Cons: There was no private bathrooms. The onsen was ok.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very kind and attentive personnel, always ready to help. Stunning view from room. Dinner and breakfast were both tasty and interestingly served. Onsen is a great experience and is available almost all day long.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff are amazing and look after the guests in a very warm and friendly way of customer service.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff were extra accomodating. We could not speak any japanese at all and managed to communicate somehow. The staff helped us move our bags up and down and even showed us to the bus stop and taught us which bus to take. One of my friends were gluten free so they adjusted the menu for that (we called in advance!). Bed and heating were nice and the view was superb We stayed in the Sakura 4 room.
Cons: The onsens were nice and hot. However, they could be cleaner and looks like they require a renovation (especially the rock based onsen as the tiling was chipping). But not a major issue - just aesthetics
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We were treated to a traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast which we all enjoyed and the staff were lovely and so helpful. Wonderful onsens too - so relaxing. Futon beds on the floor very comfortable as well,

9,0 Excellent
Pros: Super cool hotel with amazing onsen. The staff was really friendly and helpful. The traditional dinner/breakfast was a good experience and I'm glad I did it
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The staff were super helpful! We took the wrong train and they held dinner for us, calling us a few times to give advice about the best route to take showing real care. When we arrived we were warmly greeted, enjoyed the most delicious and intriguing dinner and relaxed in a private onsen. The next day breakfast was lovely, and the staff helped us plan our onward journey.
Cons: The only negative is the location as it’s a bit far out, however normally there is a direct bus from the station to the hotel (temporarily stopped due to the typhoon) and the bus system around Hakone is quite easy for tourists.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: This was our second visit to Japan and we wanted to have that traditional Japanese Ryokan experience. Ryokan/Hotel prices vary widely and after looking at many we selected one in the mid-price range that included traditionally served Breakfast and Dinner. The hotel was quite nice. Our room felt a little dated but maybe not for Ryokan Japanese style? We also opted for futon beds which was fine for our two night stay. Had we stayed longer we would have opted for western style beds. Room had a water pot & refrigerator for making tea/coffee in the room. The highlight was the Japanese style morning breakfast and evening dinner! What a wonderful treat with fabulous & delicious array of Japanese foods. Another reason we selected this hotel the natural hot spring water Onsen. Taking an Onsen is a truly Japanese experience. The resort offers family Onsen rooms or the separate men's or ladies' Onsen. Hotel is on the local transport lines which made getting around easy if you are not renting a car. Bus stop was just out the hotel front door. Definitely get the Hakone Free Pass for getting around Hakone areas. Lots to see and do in this area! Would suggest staying at least two nights or more to see sights in the mountainous area. We came to Hakone from Yokohama and opted for the bus as train service had been disrupted because of the recent hurricane damage. Taking the bus meant we did not have to transfer from the train to the bus in Hakone-Gora. The bus ride was cheaper and only a 90 minute ride from Yokohama. Repairs are being done on the train lines but not sure when it will be back up and running?
Cons: Typical of Japanese accommodations the toilet room is separate from the bathing room which for our room was off the large bedroom area. No shower in our room only a big tub which is great for people who bathe in a tub. Showers were located downstairs in the Onsen area. Since we indulged twice a day in the Onsen bathes it was not inconvenient for us to shower at this location.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Vegetarian meal was very good. Private onsen was good. Room was nice hotel staff were excellent. I would recommend this hotel to friends.
Cons: It was quite expensive. The main private onsen had little availability.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Food is wonderful, staff speak english and chinese. Rooms are huge and clean daily. Breakfast is always different, and nice Japanese style breakfast.
Cons: No transport after 5pm, so better be back to hotel before 4.30pm otherwise you have to take a cab which is hard to find.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Dinner: beautiful and really good japanese food. Onsen: Quiet and nice, beautiful outdoor onsen. Room: Spacious and really nice.
Cons: No elevator to the onsen, cumbersome for an old man to walk down the stairs with slippers :-) Some mosquitoes in the outdoor onsen, possibly because of the recent typhoons (?)
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic stay. Enjoyed the Onsen, the Japanese food for dinner and breakfast and learning a bit about Japanese customs.

Pros: The dinner! It was really awesome. Experienced food that I never eat before.
Cons: Nothing
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The atmosphere, the peacefulness, and the welcoming nature of the staff and services. The dinner and breakfast were an enjoyable experience; the indoor and outdoor onsens were great for tired travelers; and the room and sleeping arrangements were comfortable.
Cons: I have a damaged knee and it was difficult to kneel or sit for the meals--but I don't think I would change the experience. I wish we could have spent more time at Hoeiso.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Good location, bus stop is just beside the gate of the hotel. The onsen is comfortable with really good view. Breakfast and dinner are also good. Warm service by the staffs.
Cons: In rainy days, our shoes were all wet, while we could not find a place to dry them.
5,0 Okay
Pros: This was not a usual standard Osen in Japan. We are disappointed by the hospitality of the staff as most of the time. we can not really see them around.
Cons: The hotel it self is old, but we dont mind as majority of Osen hotels are , but the common area is frezzing, so is our room, we need to close all windows and curtains to make sure the room is warm enough, so, we can not see outside view at all. The meal is not tasty compare to previous Osen hotels we have stayed.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. It was simply perfect. The staff was lovely, the attendant assigned to us so kind that seemed straight out of a fairy tale. The dinner was out of this world, I have never eaten something so good. It was moving. And I am from Italy, I know by definition about good cooking but this... This sure put a smile on my face. The onsen was at the right temperature. Not scorching hot, but perfectly hot. And boy, the open air onsen. My girlfriend and I felt in another dimension, separated from this one. There were only me, her and hot sulphuric water with the song of the river beneath us. Coming to Hakone? Spend your night here. It's not a suggestion, it's an order.
Cons: It was so perfect that I can't even find a negative side!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The place is amazing, the whole hospitality experience from the moment I arrived was perfect. The food is excellent, the rape is wonderful, everything is quiet and peaceful just as I imagined. Truly one of my best experiences on a trip!
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice ryokan, our room maid was very kind, the food was delicious. There is a lovely view over the mountain from the room's window. The hot springs are the best we had during our trip in Japan. They are located close to a river and you can privatise them. The hotel is a bit isolated in the nature. There is pretty much nothing around. However there is a bus station just in front of it. You can easily go to the lake Ashinoko by bus. The Hakone open air museum is a bit farther (the train is currently being replaced by a bus). The staff was super kind and helpful.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The food was incredible and the staff were very attentive.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: The room, food, service, indoor onsen, the view.
Cons: It was very drafty and cool in the corridors.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Ability to book a private session of hot onsen. Strong wifi signals from the room, an upgrade from our previous visit a few years back which was limited to the public reception area. Food was satisfying

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic stay in Hakone. The staff is incredibly accomodating and helpful. We dropped our bags early in the morning before check-in and the next day after checkout. The room is spacious and has a bit of a view of the river. The meals are incredibly tasty and plentiful. The onsen facilities are clean and yukatas are provided. Especially go to the open-air onsen on the top floor (after 10pm men only, before 10pm women)!
Cons: The meals are a real journey of discovery and sometimes a bit more explanation of the various dishes would have been welcome.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: The meals were delicious, felt traditional and were filling. The staff serving us were very friendly and helpful. The building was not as traditional as other ryokans but the guest room itself was still reminiscent of traditional Japanese culture. We enjoyed having our meals in the room and having access to the indoor hot pool at anytime during night.
Cons: I can't think of anything at the moment.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Really friendly and hospitable staff, good onsen, great food provided for breakfast and dinner. We also loved the traditional tatami room we were in.
Cons: Would appreciate a more flexibility on the meals they provided, but they were great regardless. The hotel would definitely benefit from a slightly more modern uplift.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Staff was great and rooms were clean. What really blew me away was the food. The presentation and quality are an experience you will never forget.
Cons: The lobby smelled like cigarettes.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Open onsen view was superb. Meals were served in the room, treated like a king.
Cons: My room was located at the corner, opposite of the staffs pantry, kind of noisy. No sign boards from hakone station to guide to the hotel.

Pros: All of the staff was very welcoming, the building was beautiful, and the atmosphere very relaxing.
8,8 Excellent

Pros: I loved everything about this hotel. The garden was absolutely beautiful! Our room was nice a big and we had a window that overlooked the garden and lake. Even if you don’t get a room with a great view the hotel has an observation room on the very top floor and you have a panoramic view of the garden and lake. Everyone was very friendly and could understand/speak English. Most importantly it was a very quiet area which made for a restful sleep and it was only a 10 minute walk to town down a very beautiful path through the trees. You go right past the very popular shrine on Ashi lake.
Cons: The beds weren’t the most comfortable I’ve slept in but decent.

5,8 Okay
Pros: We liked that it was quiet and relaxing. The Japanese style rooms were spacious and the food (which you have to order in advance) was good too.
Cons: Big language barrier for tourists. Some staff were kind to explain by translating using a device, but one personnel like Ms. Y. Sato was very impolite, and more like angry when trying to communicate.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan type of hotel, the kimonos for the guests, the breakfast and dinner. The shuttle from the hotel to the railway station, town.
Cons: A bit outdated hotel but still with charm.
7,5 Good
Pros: Great location, I loved also the design of the hotel. Very clean.
Cons: Expensive, but so are the other hotels in the area. We were traveling with kids and they didn’t give them any food (we have been told to share our meals with them). For 500$ a night I would have expected at baby meal for the kids.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The place is big and quiet and the food is great.
Cons: Should give clear direction of which bus that arrives at the nearest bus stop (with bus stop name) that could get on hotel shuttle service.

8,0 Excellent
Pros: It is a beautiful lake side hotel with very polite and helpful staff. The shuttle service between Odawara Station and the hotel is a very thoughtful and convenient service for guests.
Cons: The interior of the hotel is dated.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful views, gorgeous onsen spot, lovely spacious rooms!
Cons: It was very isolated. Can only choose from their restaurant which is expensive unless you want to travel back in to the city. Few places nearby in their shopping district but don't open until 11am and close at 6pm.
5,0 Okay
Pros: The location was great with a beautiful garden overlooking the lake and Mt. Fuji. Very serene.
Cons: The food&beverage was WAY to expensive. For a buffet dinner at the Lake Grill (which looked like a nice coffee shop - so nothing fancy) we ended up paying 220,000.- yen for 2 adults and 2 small children including 2 glass of beer.
7,0 Good
Pros: The site and the orginal building were amazing
Cons: As for the price, we would expect a more careful staff, English speaking service. The hotel starts to slightly need some renovations and cleaning. The grill restaurant was under our expectations.
6,0 Good
Pros: Breakfast was very good. Location was excellent, the best part for us. Staff was very friendly and helpful, except for rigidity of whoever is in charge of restaurants.
Cons: Room was not what I expected at an extremely expensive resort--shabby carpet, mold on shower caulking, slow draining tub drain, only hand control to flush the toilet.. There is NO vegetarian or vegan food for dinner except salad and rice at the Japanese restaurant and staff wouldn't even put some tofu or yuba on the rice.
5,8 Okay
Pros: Onsen, quiet and golf.
Cons: Really old stuff, not a good view, really expensive for what they propose. I feel really lucky to go there when it’s almost empty because the onsen is really small compare to the size of the hotel. For the price, we can expect something luxurious compare to Tokyo, HK or whatever the city.

Pros: - quiet and scenic location (could see the lake and mount fuji from our window) close to main hakone landmarks, restaurants and spas - great room size and amenities
Cons: - spa's cleanliness could be reviewed more often - not that exciting place to stay for kids - got surprised with an additional charge (~6usd per night) for my 4y old kid's breakfast
