The cost included an amazing, vast breakfast buffet plus light dinner - rather impressive considering the cost of meals in Oslo. The location is just 2 blocks from the main street / National Theatre train station. I've already recommended it to friends travelling to Oslo.

Clever room design had no drawers nor doors over closet - impossible to forget something when checking out.

Pros: This hotel was a really great find and pretty central to most of the attractions in Oslo. The facilities were excellent, probably one of the best showers we had in a month of travelling through Europe and the breakfast was second to none. Top notch! Their real asset is their staff. They were so helpful and informative providing recommendations for some excellent restaurants in the local area. And when the ice machine outside our room starting beeping at 1:00am in the morning, they were upstairs to unplug it in less than 5 minutes after we reported the noise. Absolutely brilliant all around.

Pros: Staff were super friendly, the location excellent, breakfast had a huge variety and very yummy. The room itself was comfortable, everything very clean. I didn't get a chance to look at or use the leisure/gym facilities. The current renovations to the lobby area did not distract from the beauty of the hotel or our stay. We would happily stay again!

Pros: Newly renovated rooms splendidly appointed with a great bathroom, spacious, nice bed, couple of armchairs, a large table, desk. Plenty of electric outlets, though all were European, two round prongs type. No USBs. Wifi very fast. Room also provided with a Nespresso coffee maker and plenty and renewed each days coffee and tea capsules. Breakfast was outstanding, extremely varied and plentiful. Specialty coffee of any kind were avilable as do it yourseelf or with assitance from the staff who was extremely friendly, helpfull and professional. Hiky recommendeed. We also had dinner, which while a restricted menu presented enough variety and was extremely tasty.

Pros: We were supposed to stay at the Apotek Hote. We arrived early in the morning from an overnight flight from Seattle. The staff was so kind and got us into a room right away at the Bristol Hotel next door. They also wanted us to have a quieter room because of the Pride Celebration that week-end. Loved the location and the kindness of the staff, because I ask a lot of questions. Chris

Pros: The hotel is very conveniently located in the heart of downtown Oslo. It is a "grande dame" hotel and has a mildly faded classical look to many of the public areas. The rooms have been well renovated and are comfortable and well furnished. Our Bathroom was well modernized if small. Service was excellent and staff friendly and helpful without exception. Breakfast was included and excellent and the special ordered Hot omlette was delicious and perfect.

Cons: A bit of works in the lobby. The hotel is in the process of being renovated top to bottom. The remaining area is he lobby and by the looks of it, it will be ready in anpther 2-3 weeks. Cons: The online photos are misleading. Our room, building facade and location did not resemble to photos. Our room was small, really hot, and did not have the big windows in all the online photos. Ask for a room on any floor but the 6th floor. The description and photos make it seem like the hotel is a stand alone, near the royal residence. Not true. Check in and out were challenging. They did not have the booking.com reservation and took some time to find it and adjust the price to match the reservation for check in. At check out the staff told me that I “paid in full at check in but still owe some money”. I then had to wait for the manager who was unable to resolve their confusion while my family and the taxi waited. I finally left with it unresolved and have not heard anything since. It was an unpleasant experience.

Pros: Wow. What a fabulous experience. First off, the hotel itself is gorgeous (and smells amazing too). Our room was a tad cozy but quite functional. It was my birthday week and the hotel staff went many extra miles in decorating the room with streamers, a vase of roses, animals created from towels on the bed, a bag of jellybeans, and a birthday card for me. I was blown away by this detail. Additionally, the breakfast spread was phenomenal. Certainly the very best free breakfast I have ever had at a hotel. The location cannot be beat. Right at Central Station and on the tram line too (with surprisingly minimal noise). The price for all of this was incredible.

The swimming pool is on a different floor to changing rooms so had to walk in a towel down some stairs. Outside lift was not working which my daughter wanted to use. Then found out lift was working but not for hotel guests.

There was no mention of any renovation works when I checked in. It is not acceptable for a hotel to start renovation works at 8.30am in the morning. Also guests should be told before they checked in. They should not be expected to put up with such works.

On checking-out, I informed the gentleman on reception about the lights and air-con, but I didn't feel they were interested due to the amount of people in the reception area.

Pros: Location of the hotel was excellent, just outside the central train station and everything was around. Walking distance to many attractions. So many restaurants and shops around the area. After checkout we were able to hang around in the lobby, plenty of games to play, and if needed snacks or coffee is available.

Cons: We arrived after being on the road for 10 hours with a confirmed reservation only to be told at 11:45pm that they had made a mistake and there weren't any rooms available for us. After charging full price to my AMEX, they never made an attempt to contact me via email or phone and tried to repeat that they would pay for a taxi to and from the other hotel property they had transferred the reservation to without my consent. I go online and see that that hotel was charging half the rate of the Vulcan. Frustrating and highly disappointed by the whole ordeal. Cherry on top: when we got to the other Scandic 20 min away, we were greeted by a bathroom what wasn't cleaned and there weren't house keeping staff around until morning. Wouldn't recommend such an unprofessional chain if you have a choice.

Pros: The location is fairly central so easy to reach the city centre and the harbour. The breakfast was good and the selection is better than average considering it is a hotel service.
Cons: The room was very minimalistic. There were no wardrobe or a table where a customer could put down the items. I couldn't even sit down to check a map. The room was very dusty. Every day I had to clean a layer of dust from my items. Maybe due to the central air circulation but it was distractive.

Pros: Nice district, despite a lot of graffitis (good and not so good ones) it seemed pretty safe, at least at day. Warm floor in bathroom, good view from the window. Roof terrace with a great view. Nice lounge in the basement with available kettle, microwave, plates and utensils. Kind people at the reception let us store our luggage after checkout and also checked us in early.

Cons: not much worked: the tap in our room didn't work (we got a free breakfast as compensation). The table tennis table was brokene, so was the table football. The TV in the room started by itself.

Cons: The ventilation system in the room is really loud and couldn’t be turned off. The condition of the room wasn’t what you’d expect from a 5 star hotel. The walls had scratches and the door to the bathroom had a huge scratch along the wood.

Cons: We were stuck in the elevator for 10 minutes, rang the alarm, some emerency service told us, help would be on the way but nothing happened. We shouted, although it was on the basement level close to the reception, nobody reacted. Finally I managed to open the door manually from the inside. Reception said, nobody called them. That is a no-go. You may call the Hotel a designer Hotel or Boutique hotel. However, that is an example of a well-intentioned but badly implemented design. Black walls almost everywhere, not sufficient light. Why on earth black. In a country that in winter is dark enough itself. The first room they showed us has a window to the inner lobby of the Hotel. A dark room with view into a dark lobby. Two days in that room and you commit suicide. So we asked for another room with view to the outside. Finally they were so kind to upgrade us to a bigger room or suite at the same price with windows to the street. Again, black walls, black sofa with black cushions, no paintings, orange carpet on some walls. That room was worn, had scuffs everywhere, in all badly maintained. We heard the staff elevator. TV only local channels. We missed power sockets. Light system was hardly understandable and did not offer enough light e.g. for a proper shave in the bath. Staff seemed overstrained. Too often there was nobody behind the desk in the reception. But we do not blame the staff, they tried their best.

Cons: Like so many hotels in Scandinavia it does not have AC. This means room sleeping temperature dry rarely fell below 78–too hot for my sleeping taste. All that is provided is what seems to me like a warm summer duvet. Thank God I had packed a cotton sheet!

Cons: There is a roof-top viewing area that we have access to from 9am to 8pm was locked throughout the day, meaning I never got a chance to enjoy the views from the hostel roof. Noise isolation wasn't great, you could hear the water pipes in use throughout the building.
