Smaller vehicles such as compacts, sedans, and coupes are by far the best options for travelers looking to drive in Oslo. The city is designed for smaller vehicles, so drivers of large cars will find the downtown core to be ill-suited for them. However, in the outer areas of the city, large cars become a bit more common. So, if your plan is to go on a broader Norwegian adventure, then perhaps a medium-sized car would be more appropriate.
For densely populated residential areas in Oslo speed limits are typically 50 km/h (31 mph), while in less populated areas they go up to 80 km/h (50 mph). On major motorways the speed limit will get up to 110 km/h (68 mph).
Streetside parking and parking garages are the most common forms of parking available in Oslo. In the central districts of the city, however, parking garages are by far the best option for travelers as they can easily park downtown and then take public transport to get around the popular tourist areas.
The average price of fuel in Oslo is R158,18 per litre over the past 30 days. Filling up a tank of fuel costs between R1 898 and R2 531, depending on the car size.
Mini (Volkswagen up! or similar) is the most frequently booked car hire type in Oslo.
Take a look at our extensive car hire location map to find the best car hire deals near you.
A Mini car hire in Oslo costs R842 per day, on average.
An Economy car hire in Oslo costs R1 192 per day, on average.
A Standard car hire in Oslo costs R1 502 per day, on average.
In Oslo, cars are most frequently hired at Europcar Oslo Airport Gardermoen (osl) (36 km from city centre ).

Pros:
We drove a Volvo V70 in great condition.Cons:
I was an hour late for pick up and they had given away my car claiming this standard practice and comparing it to a hotel giving away your room if your are late (which has never happened to me). The only option they offered was an upgrade from a compact car to a luxury station wagon at 300NOK extra a day. They agreed on reducing the additional charge to 100NOK a day because they had made no attempt to contact me before giving away my car, but the whole experience was very negative. Between the upgrade, extra mileage, and the unexpected daily toll system fee, our rental cost double the price quoted on kayak.10,0 Wonderful

Pros:
The Ford Galaxy was great for my group of 5 adults. The diesel motor is quiet, powerful and quite economic despite the large load.We drove through the mountains to Bergen and it performed well. The service at the Sixt outlet in Oslo was good although some explanation on the navigation system would have been helpful.Cons:
The Sixt outlet at the Bergen airport was a bit confusing to find but the personal were very nice to deal with once found.2,0 Poor

Pros:
I reserved an "economy" car, but was given a Mercedes Benz with less than 5,000 km on it. Awesome car - but then was charged additional insurance for it.Cons:
I called a week before rental to confirm deposit amount so that I would have enough room available on credit card. Also inquired about any additional fees/deposits required at check-in (this was a rental abroad). When I showed up, the safety deposit was nearly 2x as much as was quoted, and 4x the rental price. Also, a deposit was required for toll roads - an additional $100 had to be reserved. Luckily, a friend had an extra card for emergencies and we were able to get the car. We returned the car outside office hours without a problem, but freaked when the final charge came in a week later. The "itemized" receipt was a list of codes that I couldn't decipher. I emailed the billing department (and heard back a week later), the codes were for insurances we had declined (but were applied because we were given a Mercedes), tolls, a parking ticket we never got, and the administrative fees for ticket. THE ADMINISTRATIVE FEES WERE THE SAME COST AS THE ALLEGED PARKING TICKET. I'm still trying to get proof of this parking ticket but haven't heard back. Currently disputing charges with credit card. I'LL NEVER RENT WITH SIXT AGAIN.10,0 Wonderful

Pros:
Staff were helpful and friendly and pickup/drop off was easy.Cons:
More instructions could have bee provided on how to charge our electric car - We should have been told to download an app to charge our car around town, how to actually charge the car, etc. Plus, the first EV car we were given did not charge correctly, but the second did.10,0 Wonderful

Pros:
The car was perfect for the traveling I was doing. Comfortable and clean. Was nice being able to rent a wifi device for the car. Pick up went wellCons:
The price I was quoted in my booking was WAY different than what I ended up actually having to pay... about $200 more! Be aware for all the fees and ask for clarification.8,0 Very Good

Pros:
I had some problems with my reservation and the staff member there (I think her name was Gri )?)) went above and beyond to help fix them. Ultimately it didn't work but her excellent effort is what I remember.Cons:
The rest of the staff appeared busy but I'm not sure if they were as helpful to the waiting customers - yes there was a line. Also the location is not so easy to get to unless you're aware of the metro lines.8,0 Very Good

Cons:
The drop-off was a nightmare. The drop-off location was extremely difficult to find, no signage telling us where to park, where to drop the keys, etc. We had to do a lot of guessing and walking around asking and looking for help. In the end, we weren't sure we had done the right thing or that we had left the car or the keys in the right spot. The support phone number had no answer.10,0 Wonderful

Cons:
Dollar Car rentals is just a non existing company in Oslo central station, nobody knows about it (station information, even Hertz employees from which I was supposed to get the car, the reservation was not in their system). So I lost one day and never get the car, then had to go to the airport to get a car from another company. I don't know if it's a scam or just a bad synchronization between dollar and kayak systems, but NEVER RENT FROM DOLLAR IN OSLO.2,0 Poor
