More than three times the quoted amountPros:The car we ended up with was fine. The shuttle service to and from the airport was easy and friendly.Cons:We got off the flight 2 hours later than planned, and they didn't honor our reservation price. They waited until far into the paperwork process and after we'd already shuttled far from the airport to give us a quote because they no longer had the type of car we wanted, and we were forced to get an SUV for several hundred dollars more than our original quote. They also pressured us hard for insurance, and the girl kept threatening that the law-required insurance wasn't actually okay. Not a good experience.Reviewed Dec 30 2015

Cons:Unlike renting a car through Southwest Airlines, you charged a cancelation fee and no show fee if it's not cancelled at least 24 hours in advance. And charged me $25 even though I asked you to remove that fee. I was trying out your car rental for the first time, since I regularly rent from Southwest because of their super easy and super convenient csncelation policy. I will go back to them and will never rent from Economy again. You got $25 from me once, but have lost my business forever as a consistent business and world traveler.Reviewed Dec 14 2015

Cons:"Required" insurance was 3x the cost of car rental. They would not accept $20/day insurance waiver that was in their own contract and would not accept the insurance from my insurer or my credit card. Further, when we dropped the car off three days early, they would not refund the balance of the prepaid insurance. Why am I paying insurance on a car that is no longer in my possession? The counter was slow, but the people were nice enough. The car was not four-wheel drive as confirmed. This company is bait and switch group. Don't be fooled by their "low" prices.Reviewed Feb 3 2016

Cons:We were not informed that the rental price and hold had to be placed on the same credit card and staff was not willing to help us find a solution. Would not recommend. Also prepare for being pushed on insurance that is already provided for you on your credit cardsReviewed Feb 21 2021

Disappointed with added charges that weren't listePros:The drop off experience was better than pickup. Super fast, convenient, and they called a taxi for us as well.Cons:I didn't like the additional $150 drop off charge that wasn't listed on the Kayak website. It would have swayed my decision from working with Economy. I also didn't like the additional charges for additional drivers. Never paid that anywhere else. The insurance charges were not explained well, and an explanation of what was/wasn't covered was given. We were not given a copy of the vehicle inspection. I requested that they scanned it in and emailed it to me as an official record, and they declined, and became a little defensive. They said that the photocopier was broken, but were making copies of our passport. They seemed under staffed, and stressed out. Poor customer experience. Probably will not use them again with how many other providers there are.Reviewed Dec 29 2015

Cons:Did not honor insurance policy, charged extra at pickup, charged 1800 on my card by mistake and then tried to have me reveal bank details and increase personal credit limit on my card. This place took advantage of me.Reviewed Mar 14 2021

Worst Car rental. They scam you!Pros:NothingCons:They are scammers, beware! On top of the price here there is $35/day required insurance and also a $15/day extra insurance if you don't want to have a deductible. But that's almost worthless. When we brought back the car, they told us there where a scrats underneath the car! And because we didn't have a police report we can't use the extra insurance for it!! We didn't even know of the scratch so how do we know to get a report! They also knew that our plane was leaving soon and for that reason, they delayed everything so that we don't have time to do anything about it. The customer that came after us had the exact same problem with them. @kayak: Why are you still working with them? After reading all the other reviews its clear that this company is a scam.Reviewed Dec 23 2017

Bait and switchPros:The customer service person was nice and the pick up and drop off was fast and pleasant.Cons:The $360 dollar expected price confirmed on the internet ended up to be $745 at pick up. The add on "liability insurance" that was "mandatory" was nowhere to be found on the original quote. The other fees were very suspect also. If we would have needed the collision insurance the cost would have soared to over $1000 dollars! They had us down for a 7 pm pick up time and we arrived at noon, so the SUV we got was not washed or vacuumed and only 1/2 full of gas which made it hard to return at the same gas level. Lastly, the vehicle was one class smaller than the one we confirmed....Reviewed Feb 23 2016

Paid in advance, price doubled at Economy Rent a cCons:Very sleazy "Bait and Switch" vibe when doing business with these guys. Completed check-out online for a 1-week rental for ~$300 and get an email advising my vehicle is "ready for pick-up". I taxi my way out to their location, and at the register the sales rep suddenly turns the price from $300 to $600 + they need to hold on to $3000 from my bank account for a period of up to 2 months. Very much wanted to walk out of there. I ended up going for it because much of my trip was dependent on having a vehicle to travel around the country, but felt absolutely disgusted for having given business to such a terrible company. Screw these guys for messing with people on the few days they get to take off a year.Reviewed Dec 25 2015

Shady Pricing Practices - Liberia, Costa RicaPros:The car itself was fine, easy pick-up from and drop-off to the airport.Cons:I should have known something was up when I reserved a car for $6.40/day including taxes. What they don't tell you is that's without any insurance (which I always decline because I have private car insurance). However, you can't decline Emergency Roadside Assistance, the Limited Loss Wavier or the Liability Waiver unless you "can prove your stateside insurance covers third-party damage specifically in Costa Rica" which "no one has ever been able to prove." So my rental ending up being $36.13/day (roughly 6 times expected!). ALSO, that's only because I declined the Total Damage Wavier, Super Loss Damage Waiver and Loss Damage Waiver, putting me on the hook for, from what I could understand, potentially the entire cost of the car if something happened and a $3000 hold on my credit card. There were two other tiers of coverage where you could pay more upfront with max payments for incidents. One last thing, as I was checking out after returning the car, the employee said: "you were supposed to return the car at 12:30." It was 1:00! When I just stared at him waiting for his follow-up, he said everything was okay, but this just leads me to believe they could have charged me if they wanted to, which is in line with some of the other reviews.Reviewed Mar 24 2016

Bait and switchPros:There was NOTHING good about my experience with Economy.Cons:Through Kayak, I rented a car through Economy, for pick-up at the airport in Liberia, Costa Rica. I specifically made that reservation because it was the best price for a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, specifically a Daihatsu Terios, a no-frills, but adequate, base model, with a manual transmission, for $17 per day. I was rightfully proud of the good deal that I had made, after more than an hour of investigating my options online. I needed a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, because of Costa Rica's dirt "roads" that are all but the most-traveled of routes. When I got to the airport, with my printed reservation confirmation in hand, I walked up the the "counter" with the Economy sign. When the lazy dope finally completed his texting, he told me that Economy "no longer" had my car, because my plane arrived significantly later. (That was true, and this BS experience with Economy added more injury to an already-bad travel experience.) I inquired of this bozo (in my relatively decent Spanish) what we could do. Incredibly, he replied that there was NOTHING that Economy could do, because Economy had NO MORE CARS, of ANY kind, at that location. Of course, this was a complete LIE. This crook with Economy suggested that I instead make a completely different arrangement with the one other guy at that table, sitting in the chair next to him, who was supposedly with Alamo. I was screwed, and I needed a car, so I was more screwed. The "Alamo" gave me a price for a Toyota Rav-4, which was twice as much, but a better car. He sent me to Enterprise, which apparently is associated with Alamo. All car rental in that airport is off-site, and shuttle took me to the rental center for a bunch of different car rental companies. I had to fight to strongly demand to the young man at the Enterprise counter to rent me a Daihatsu Terios, instead of a larger, more-expensive SUV. There is NO doubt in my mind that Economy DID indeed HAVE an SUV there, and that this Economy representative breached the deal that Economy had made with me, in order to get a "commission" on the higher-price rental from a different car rental company. Economy owes me about $100 in compensatory damages resulting from Economy's breach of the deal it made with me, and it should pay me $1,000 more in punitive damages, so as to dissuade Economy, and other shifty operators, from ripping off more renters.Reviewed Feb 16 2016
