Pros:Great staff. Easy process. Clean car.Cons:Hidden fees and required insurance resulted in a 3x increase to quoted rate from website. Instead of $246.93, total cost was $735.13. Kayak is a joke. This is the ultimate rip-off as there was no way to accurately compare REAL cost of the rental. Further, the front end of this car was in terrible shape. At the first bump encountered, the left front end slammed loudly - which was an indicator of a car that was unsafe to drive. Very disappointed is an understatement.Reviewed Jan 3 2021

Rate quoted online is not correct!Pros:The car we got was exactly as described online and worked great for our needs. The people we met at the Alamo location in Libera for pick up and in San Jose for drop off were very helpful and extremely accommodating with providing maps and recommendations.Cons:The rate we were quoted online was vastly different from the end price we paid. When we made our reservation online the price was around $150 for our full reservation and once we arrived at the airport in Liberia to pick up the car we were quoted 3 price options that we could choose from ranging from $450 - $660 depending on the insurance coverage we wanted. If we went with the $450 option the car rental location would put a $1,000 hold on our card that would not be lifted for at least 7 business days after we returned the car (and left the country!). We did not feel in any way comfortable with this option and the only way to not have the hold placed on our card was to go with the $660 option, so we did. At the time of pick up we were told these were required insurances/fees put in place by the country of Costa Rica that we had to pay in order to rent the car. At this point, had just traveled 10+ hours, were in a foreign country and had no other means of transportation for the duration of our vacation so had to accept the fees. In my opinion, it was still not an unreasonable total fee for the time we had the car; however, it was extremely misleading to be quoted one price online for our confirmed reservation and then required to pay another upon arrival. I suggest that if possible, this should be rectified so travelers aren't caught off guard in the future.Reviewed Jul 27 2017

Alamo doesn't rent cars; they sell insuranceCons:After choosing my reservation on Kayak with a slightly below the competition daily rate the agent persisted in pushing progressively greater levels of insurance after repeated declines from me. Finally he required a government mandated minimal coverage at nearly US$ 40 per day. I was stuck. A few calls confirmed the local requirement, but showed the Alamo rate was nearly triple the going rate. Kayak (and other aggregators) need to disclose the requirements and costs. BTW the Alamo, Enterprise, National and Budget franchises in Costa Rica are owned by one company that deals "different brands" from a single off-airport location. So, Hertz or Avis is the better choice.Reviewed Jan 11 2016

Beware hidden fees. Customer service like molassesPros:Be advised that your quoted rate on Kayak is very different from what you will actually be charged in Costa Rica. A "mandatory" government insurance package took our total cost for a week from $55 to $270. We tried to refuse it so we could use our credit card's built-in coverage, but they wouldn't have it. Being in a foreign country with limited transportation options, we weren't in a position to switch. Companies with good customer service are transparent about their fees, or they at least build them into the overall cost upfront. Second, the total elapsed time from airport to driving away with a car at Liberia, Costa Rica, was about 1.5-2 hours. Lots of waiting around in the heat at the "welcome center."Reviewed Mar 28 2016

Exorbitant hidden local insurance purchase requirePros:Everything was overshadowed by the experience of being quoted one price and having to pay nearly 3x that price upon actual rental. It does NOT feel good to be cheated!Cons:Alamo, and its several global competitors who share a rental location in Liberia, all have a hidden local insurance cost that was more than our daily rental cost. While several local fees were identified in our price quote, for some reason Alamo did not find it necessary to identify this one, which dwarfs all other costs (our initial quote of $267 for a week ended up being about $560 - which was all due to that add-on insurance requirement). Even with the insurance provided by our credit card we were obligated to purchase this insurance. The lack of transparency in this transaction made my friends and I feel that we had been duped and officially cheated in the end.Reviewed Mar 6 2016

Inadequate InformationCons:The rate I was quoted online was unbelievable, and that is exactly what I got. I was traveling to Costa Rica and decided I would purchase the additional insurance. When I arrived to pick up the car, I was told the for the rate I was paying I would have to put an additional $2500 deposit on a credit card, and if there was an accident, all charges would be billed to said card, even with the additional insurance I had purchased. However, I could pay additional amounts for insurance and reduce the amount of the deposit on the card. The rental ended up costing me three times the amount quoted. I understand the risks of traveling to some countries and the unusual policies that are in place. My issue is this information should have been published on the website so I could have made a more informed decision.Reviewed Aug 8 2016

A Costa Rica SCAMCons:Alamo advertised a car price of $16/day for an Economy SUV in Liberia, Costa Rica. Upon arrival, I was told that the MANDATORY insurance was an ADDITIONAL $30 / day! I was somewhat prepared for this, and had brought proof of insurance from my credit card company, confirming coverage in CR. Despite that, it was insufficient for the insurance that they said was LAW in CR. The reality is that they make up charges for the insurance, and add on whatever they think they can get from you. EVERY customer in a LONG line had to argue about the insurance. It was ridiculously overpriced, and a very underhanded way of jacking up huge margins. I returned the car after a couple of days, and rented from another company, who DID NOT require the insurance that was supposedly required by law, at a much more reasonable price. I am sure this was only typical of the Costa RIca branch. But I will NEVER rent from Alamo again.Reviewed Jan 15 2016

Falsely advertised prices. Very disappointing expePros:The car itself was fine.Cons:Originally booked the car for $116 USD for a week (I also paid for separate damage insurance online and expected to have to pay third party liability insurance separately as the online booking never offered it for purchase.) When we went to pick up the car, the mandatory third party insurance cost extra $230 USD. The insurance was double the price of the rental cost itself. We were shocked and no one seemed to know why this was never mentioned anywhere. We built our whole trip around this car, not to mention the car park location is remote and had no other option but to suck it up and pay. We could hear other customers around us having the same issues. I have never been more disappointed in a rental company, as well as the booking site itself for failing to mention such a significant cost. It was false advertisement and I do not recommend Alamo. After all the issues, the associate had the audacity to constantly try to upsell us with bigger cars and extras. They clearly had no shame nor compassion.Reviewed Dec 18 2016

Never again, Alamo. Be prepared to negotiate ridicPros:They pick you up from the airportCons:-They force you to pay a "mandatory insurance coverage" (third-party liability insurance) that was 3x the price of the booking. -They tried to sell me full coverage which was a ridiculous $100 extra per day. -They take $2000 for deposit. -It's a cheap, old and slow Chinese mini car. -I called Alamo before taking the flight to update our arrival time and provide our flight number. Even though Reservations confirmed with me that they reached out and notified the office, when I arrived at Alamo they told me they were never notified and almost cancel my reservation. -I didn't like that they tried to trick us into paying for a tire that was in the trunk, alleging that we had a flat tire and had to change it because apparently it was used. Almost lose my flight by trying to explain them that the we didn't have any flat tires and that the wheel was like that when we picked up the car. -After this deceitful and unpleasant experience, I will never rent from Alamo again.Reviewed Feb 16 2016

Beware of deceptive surchargesPros:Hardly any lines/customers despite it being a holiday period and very few available cars. They actually had the car I reserved.Cons:Kayak quoted me $324 (including taxes) for a 10 day Costa Rica rental. The Liberia counter added $380 in "mandatory" insurance. I protested the charges but they would not back down. Supplemental insurance is required in Costa Rica and runs about $12/day but my charges were outrageous. While on vacation I filed a complaint with Alamo. To their credit, corporate Alamo contacted the branch, admitted it was a mistake and refunded $260 about a month later. However, how customers were duped into paying more than double for their rentals? I reserved a small SUV but never have I driven such a small car. It was old (80,000 km) and cheap by US standards. No power windows, locks. 2 door Suzuki SUV with barely enough space for 2 adults + 2 kids and almost no luggage space.Reviewed Jan 29 2016

They lied!Pros:They lied. What they told me over the phone was not true. When I reserve my car months prior to arrival they quoted her $594 rental fee with all insurances and etc. etc. and a $500 hold on my card. Truth of the matter was when I got there to claim the car at Liberia now was $1600 for the insurance and And rental there were other lower tier insurance things but then I needed a letter from my credit card company etc. etc. One across the pavilion to budget met a very nice young man gave me a good rate more than I expected but way less than Alamo and off we went. Stay clear of Alamo.Cons:And rental there were other lower tier insurance things but then I needed a letter from my credit card company etc. etc. One across the pavilion to budget met a very nice young man gave me a good rate more than I expected but way less than Alamo and off we went.
