Top tips for hiring a car at Liberia airport

  • A car rental at Liberia Airport (LIR) will efficiently cater to your transit needs in Guanacaste. Public transportation from the airport is inadequate since bus services are not frequent. Also, taking a taxi from the airport can be relatively expensive, especially if you wish to explore attractions in this area. Alternatively, having your own set of wheels will enable you the freedom to explore outside the typical popular beaches in Guanacaste. Moreover, you will skip the delays and waiting periods associated with public transportation from LIR.
  • For renters on a tight budget, consider going for the cheaper cars, such as an economy or compact. You should check out all the onsite car rental providers at LIR and compare the rates to find the best deal available. Also, if your credit card covers all your insurance needs, you can decline the optional insurance cover offered by your car rental at Liberia Airport. Confirm whether you are eligible for discounts to save up some money. You can also have your rental provider remove the charged extras you don't need from your car.
  • When picking up your car rental at Liberia Airport, consider inspecting your car for damages and have them documented. You can also take photos or a video of the vehicle as proof in case you need any. Also, be on the look for possible safety issues when inspecting your car. Ensure all door locks are functional and ask for the airbag service report. If anything is amiss, request another car. Moreover, inquire about the type of gas your vehicle uses and the gas policy the car rental operates. Finally, read through the rental agreement and analyze the terms and conditions before signing it.
  • For Liberia Airport car rental payments, credit cards are the primary payment method accepted. Major credit cards such as MasterCard and Visa are typically accepted, but they must bear the renter's name. However, some rental providers at LIR accept debit cards but demand a security deposit. The security deposit varies with the car rental provider. Also, additional charges and restrictions apply for renters with a debit card.
  • Book your car hire at Liberia airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

Payless has great customer service for the situation we were out in. The insurance prices are crazy but at the end of the day it wasn’t Payless fault. This is a country requirement that we did understand prior to booking. The pick up was easy and Luis was great!! Drop off was simple as well and super friendly. Car was cleaned when we picked up and that was appreciated.

No problem being picked up from Liberia Airport to off-site pickup location . . . It was either a pay an extra $419 for " a 'mandatory' 3rd person collision insurance" or no rental!!!! This was $419 payment for a $147 7-day rental!! The personnel at Payless were were helpful to secure a taxi to Playa del Coco for $60.

My agent was a very nice lady and the whole process was easy but don’t count on getting the car you asked for.

They kept the deductible for, as far as I can tell, there being some sand on the floormats and the exterior being dusty. If I had known, I could have simply shaken out the floormat. We were driving on dirt roads, not much we could do about dust. I've never had a car rental expectation that you go through a car wash and vacuum the car out. They did not give an invoice back, just some pics showing the floor mat and the dust. That was not worth the $600 they charged. I expected the $300 for the insurance.

Gave me a very uneasy feeling the way they forced the insurance on me. Also the car was in rough shape, moldy interior, far from the quality of car I usually get from Hertz. Ultimately, they didn’t end up scamming me but I felt like they were going to at multiple stages.

shuttle from LIR was very organized, very nice staff. booked a compact 4x4, received a compact 4x4. did pay for the comprehensive insurance but it seemed like they would accept a letter saying you have other coverage. return was super simple, took about 5 minutes, no surprise charges and the shuttle back to the airport was waiting to drop us off at the terminal. There was a slight wait at the counter to get the car because everyone comes out of customs at a similar time but it was really a seamless and painless process overall. All the staff was super nice and welcoming!

We booked our rental car for Costa Rica through Kayak because it was so cheap. Like $6/day. We were renting for a month so a low daily fee was important. The most important advice we can give anyone is to make sure to read up on Costa Rica’s insurance requirements. Our six dollars a day, which came out close to $200 for the month turned into over $1000 once we got to the car rental place because of required insurance. You also need to have your own liability insurance when you rent a car. Luckily, our credit card company offered that. Routes car rental was there to pick us up at the airport, very kind, and our car was great. Do your research on car rentals before you show up!

Avis vehicles were nicer and had more selection, Fox selection was limited and a lot slower to pickup but the savings of several hundred dollars goes a long way. Check-in line was very slow. Once I got to an agent to get my car, they tried to sell me every insurance coverage under the sun. I had already purchased the collision liability, but that didn't stop them from trying to sell it to me. Second, the Toyota Rush I got was extremely basic. It only had a lock and unlock on the remote, no button to release the back hatch. The back hatch button on the outside of the car worked sporadically. Like they say, if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Pickup was a nightmare! It took us literally two hours to stand in line and get our car. They took their time and pushed and insisted we buy more insurance saying we weren’t covered by our own insurance plus the one we purchased through Kayak! It’s not that the lines were that long, it was the slowness of the process and the fact that when we got there five Budget people were assisting customers then 4, 3, 2, and finally only one. It was painful and such a waste of our time. Fortunately the young woman when we returned the car was so kind we almost weren’t going to write this, but we weren’t alone to suffer the pickup process, so here it is. We hope the company reads this and makes appropriate changes. 😊

It was absolutely horrible picking up the car. You're advertisement, said free shuttle. There was no free shuttle , they had two individual cars to pick you up. The individual that appeared to represent your company said a free shuttle Van would be there in 5 minutes 45 minutes later or still standing. This starts to feel like a scam. I ended up paying for a taxi $20 to get to your rent car.Location definitely will not be using you again

Kayak should know that Liability Insurance is mandatory in Costa Rica. Adds 350 to what they tell you the rental fee will be.

Jorge was wonderful and the car was great! The company was actually called U-Save, not Amex. We were very happy and look forward to renting with them again.

I bought insurance when I made the reservation. But the car rental place forced me to buy additional insurance saying it was required. So I ended up with two full coverage insurance policies. Not sure the guy was completely honest. Cars are older and with damage. Be sure to video your rental before you depart the lot. Staff were fairly friendly and drove us to the airport. I would probably look for a different rental company for my next visit.

We were never picked up from the airport so we had to get a driver to take us to the location and pay extra. It took us an hour to get the rental after an hour of waistline time at the airport for the shuttle.

Bait and switch. Horrible customer service. 1st the reserved car is not available… NOTHING comparable. Price is nothing even close to quoted price. (Of course there may be some slight differences) but this was off by HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. We were so upset we said ok we will rent for one day to just get to hotel and drive to another rental place tomorrow. He says “one day price is same as 6 day price!!!!” Vehicle he tried to offer smelled so bad of cigarettes and mowed lawn. It looked like it was used as a gardener's vehicle for quite some time. He did not even try to offer a comparable vehicle!!! Our luggage would not fit in what he offered. Luckily we walked NEXT DOOR TO Amigo car rental and had outstanding service!

The car was a total wreck. 4 different and really used up tires. One of them had a slow leak that we had to take care every 100km. We had to remove and put back the 2 front mud guards because they were flopping. Final note, water was getting inside the car every big rain. During the rain season in costa rica.... Never again.

The car was OK (Toyota RAV4), but had over 110k kilometers and was 6 years old. The annoying part is that they keep giving half-empty tanks on pick-up. That way they never have to refuel their cars, as people always return more gas than what they pick up (practically impossible to return the same amount). In case you return less, you get charged for gas. I rented a few times from them, as well as our friends once, and the same thing happened every single time. One time the tank was 1/8 full, so we practically had to drive directly to a gas station. The company regularly has the lowest rates, but their fleet has by far the oldest cars, compared to other rental companies around the airport.

When we went to pickup the car the person at the front desk was asking us to pay double the price saying it’s for insurance. We waisted couple hours there and left without a car and needed to find alternative transportation. Also the place looked very shady and o my few cars there. Didn’t seem like legitimate place

The advertised/agreed-upon price is not the same as the price presented by hertz/firefly when you show up to the store store. The google reviews are poor for this store and are correct. The company forces you to provide an insurance letter from your credit card company and forced us to purchase 3d party collision insurance and more than doubled the agreed-upon price.

The amount indicated on kayak was half the final price I had to pay. They tried to scam us with overpriced insurance, 30 USD per day when the policy indicated 15USD. When challenged they claimed an error and corrected the price. They still overcharged us 150 USD for a different drop off location when I did my reservation with different pickup and drop off points. No extras were indicated on the website. Would not recommend for these reasons.
