Payless has great customer service for the situation we were out in. The insurance prices are crazy but at the end of the day it wasn’t Payless fault. This is a country requirement that we did understand prior to booking. The pick up was easy and Luis was great!! Drop off was simple as well and super friendly. Car was cleaned when we picked up and that was appreciated.

No problem being picked up from Liberia Airport to off-site pickup location . . . It was either a pay an extra $419 for " a 'mandatory' 3rd person collision insurance" or no rental!!!! This was $419 payment for a $147 7-day rental!! The personnel at Payless were were helpful to secure a taxi to Playa del Coco for $60.

Arrive to Avis Liberia to a lot full of Nissan Kicks. Not the car ANYONE in the lobby had reserved. They claimed they were in the midst of a fleet upgrade but when I drive past over 10 days, the same lot full of Kicks were there. My agent was a very nice lady and the whole process was easy but don’t count on getting the car you asked for.

Unacceptable wait time for checking out the car. Horrible road side assistance in Costa Rica. NEVER AGAIN will I rent a car here. Police and 2 insurance adjusters had to come to scene of extremely minor accident. Waited 3 hours on side of road in a nasty dirty smelly area. This was after waiting one hour to get the car. WORST day of a trip ever. And horrible service

They kept the deductible for, as far as I can tell, there being some sand on the floormats and the exterior being dusty. If I had known, I could have simply shaken out the floormat. We were driving on dirt roads, not much we could do about dust. I've never had a car rental expectation that you go through a car wash and vacuum the car out. They did not give an invoice back, just some pics showing the floor mat and the dust. That was not worth the $600 they charged. I expected the $300 for the insurance.

Gave me a very uneasy feeling the way they forced the insurance on me. Also the car was in rough shape, moldy interior, far from the quality of car I usually get from Hertz. Ultimately, they didn’t end up scamming me but I felt like they were going to at multiple stages.

shuttle from LIR was very organized, very nice staff. booked a compact 4x4, received a compact 4x4. did pay for the comprehensive insurance but it seemed like they would accept a letter saying you have other coverage. return was super simple, took about 5 minutes, no surprise charges and the shuttle back to the airport was waiting to drop us off at the terminal. There was a slight wait at the counter to get the car because everyone comes out of customs at a similar time but it was really a seamless and painless process overall. All the staff was super nice and welcoming!

The first vehicle we received was not in the best condition, with some mechanical problems. However when we returned it we were immediately given a newer vehicle in perfect condition. Sometimes vehicles go out that need more attention . The fact that we received a newer vehicle immediately with no questions asked and an apology made the experience much better.

Other family was on same trip with us. They used AVIS we chose fox. Fox prices were quite a bit cheaper. Avis vehicles were nicer and had more selection, Fox selection was limited and a lot slower to pickup but the savings of several hundred dollars goes a long way. No issues with return, no hidden fees. As long as you are aware of the insurance costs and requirements of Costa Rica, no issues.

My biggest concern was that the rental rate was honoured ($992) as quoted BUT the mandatory insurance was $3,000. My second disappointment was Thai had reserved a Suzuki jeep type car and had to accept an old Nissan Kicks low clearance two wheel drive for my stated travels to a Costa Rican jungle dirt roads stay. The service (not FOX but EUROCAR) was excellent.

I had a mechanical problem with the 1st vehicle. I had to wait almost 3 hours to get a new car. When I took possession of the car, one tire was completely unusable. I had to put the spare tire on and eventually I went to one of your branches to get a new spare tire. I would like to get a discount for all the inconvenience. THANKS

Check-in line was very slow. Once I got to an agent to get my car, they tried to sell me every insurance coverage under the sun. I had already purchased the collision liability, but that didn't stop them from trying to sell it to me. Second, the Toyota Rush I got was extremely basic. It only had a lock and unlock on the remote, no button to release the back hatch. The back hatch button on the outside of the car worked sporadically. Like they say, if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Pickup was a nightmare! It took us literally two hours to stand in line and get our car. They took their time and pushed and insisted we buy more insurance saying we weren’t covered by our own insurance plus the one we purchased through Kayak! It’s not that the lines were that long, it was the slowness of the process and the fact that when we got there five Budget people were assisting customers then 4, 3, 2, and finally only one. It was painful and such a waste of our time. Fortunately the young woman when we returned the car was so kind we almost weren’t going to write this, but we weren’t alone to suffer the pickup process, so here it is. We hope the company reads this and makes appropriate changes. 😊

It was absolutely horrible picking up the car.You're advertisement, said free shuttle.There was no free shuttle , they had two individual cars to pick you up. The individual that appeared to represent your company said a free shuttle Van would be there in 5 minutes 45 minutes later or still standing. This starts to feel like a scam. I ended up paying for a taxi $20 to get to your rent car.Location definitely will not be using you again

I bought insurance when I made the reservation. But the car rental place forced me to buy additional insurance saying it was required. So I ended up with two full coverage insurance policies. Not sure the guy was completely honest. Cars are older and with damage. Be sure to video your rental before you depart the lot. Staff were fairly friendly and drove us to the airport. I would probably look for a different rental company for my next visit.

Bait and switch. Horrible customer service. 1st the reserved car is not available… NOTHING comparable. Price is nothing even close to quoted price. (Of course there may be some slight differences) but this was off by HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. We were so upset we said ok we will rent for one day to just get to hotel and drive to another rental place tomorrow. He says “one day price is same as 6 day price!!!!” Vehicle he tried to offer smelled so bad of cigarettes and mowed lawn. It looked like it was used as a gardener's vehicle for quite some time. He did not even try to offer a comparable vehicle!!! Our luggage would not fit in what he offered. Luckily we walked NEXT DOOR TO Amigo car rental and had outstanding service!

The car was a total wreck. 4 different and really used up tires. One of them had a slow leak that we had to take care every 100km. We had to remove and put back the 2 front mud guards because they were flopping. Final note, water was getting inside the car every big rain. During the rain season in costa rica.... Never again.

The car was OK (Toyota RAV4), but had over 110k kilometers and was 6 years old. The annoying part is that they keep giving half-empty tanks on pick-up. That way they never have to refuel their cars, as people always return more gas than what they pick up (practically impossible to return the same amount). In case you return less, you get charged for gas. I rented a few times from them, as well as our friends once, and the same thing happened every single time. One time the tank was 1/8 full, so we practically had to drive directly to a gas station. The company regularly has the lowest rates, but their fleet has by far the oldest cars, compared to other rental companies around the airport.

When we went to pickup the car the person at the front desk was asking us to pay double the price saying it’s for insurance. We waisted couple hours there and left without a car and needed to find alternative transportation. Also the place looked very shady and o my few cars there. Didn’t seem like legitimate place

The first car we got didn't run properly and the 4wd didn't seem to work. The replacement car also didn't run very well and it got a flat tire. The third car we got was great - no problems. The staff were alsways willing to help and were very friendly. the insurance costs were outrageous.

The advertised/agreed-upon price is not the same as the price presented by hertz/firefly when you show up to the store store. The google reviews are poor for this store and are correct. The company forces you to provide an insurance letter from your credit card company and forced us to purchase 3d party collision insurance and more than doubled the agreed-upon price.

The amount indicated on kayak was half the final price I had to pay. They tried to scam us with overpriced insurance, 30 USD per day when the policy indicated 15USD. When challenged they claimed an error and corrected the price. They still overcharged us 150 USD for a different drop off location when I did my reservation with different pickup and drop off points. No extras were indicated on the website. Would not recommend for these reasons.
