PAYLESS EQUALS CARE LESSPros:NOTHINGCons:I cannot say what I liked about the rental because when I arrived at the airport in West Palm Beach, FL, Payless had overbooked 20 cars. I was forced to go to Enterprise and get a car for double what Payless was charging me. When I contacted Payless, they thanked me for choosing Payless and talked about how they strive for happy customers etc..., but they do NOT reimburse on these sort of situations. I don't know if this happens a lot with Payless, but I cannot risk having a confirmed reservation and getting stuck because Payless doesn't honor their word.Reviewed Oct 20 2015

1 hour to get a pre booked carPros:The carCons:One hour wait for a rental car - the girl is not even polite (arm laying on the counter) - sorry if you don't like your job but we are here to rent a car. Then pricing is not the one you think you will pay, you need extra insurance for everything. Then the car will be brought so extra 10 minutes to wait to finally find out the car was on the parking. Color discribed silver - the car is dark grey. And you need to check the dents and scratches by yourself. Poor experience for the pricing. I do not recommendReviewed May 22 2017

Unclear instructions on drop offCons:When I dropped off the car in the lot I was told that I was finished. Except that I wasn't and I did not find out until looking at my credit card statement and noticing the charge was >50% more than the estimate. When I called the agency to ask why I was charged more I was told that the contract was closed after 3 pm which was 3 hours later than I dropped it off so apparently I was supposed to wait in line again which was not made clear to me in the drop off lot. I have rented from numerous agencies spanning many years and I have never had to wait in line for the drop off. I supposed that's how Payless can offer such low rates by slapping excessive charges on unsuspecting customers.Reviewed Dec 3 2015

Pros:Plane canceled - at hospice w dying aunt - had to change to early morning flight but no ine answered Bellvadere office ohine at 7:39, 8pm, and called 899 number that said I was lying, of course they answer the ohone. Left my name and number at Bellvadere office - no call back - just to see if I could return early morn instead of late night. Under 48 hr period but they said when I spoke to 809 #, they charge by day, not 24 hr period. Aunt died, thank God for her - had late charge....will never rent frim payless againReviewed Apr 3 2016

Terrible servicePros:Once we finally got a car, the car was clean and ran fine.Cons:The car was supposed to be ready at 11 AM. Due to horribly slow service we didn’t leave the premises until after 2 PM. There were three people ahead of me and it took over an hour to get through the line.... THEN after I was finally assigned a car they said to wait out front and they would bring it around. After 20 mins of waiting I went in to have them check on it. I was reassured that I just needed to wait out front for a couple more minutes. Another 20 mins went by and still nothing. Finally I asked one of the guys bringing cars around to look for the car we were assigned. He came back ~15 mins later and said that car isn’t on the lot and that I needed to go ask for a new car. Finally after over 2 hours of trying to get it figured out the inside attendant took a car assigned to someone else. Just a terrible experience with organization and service. front desk person needs a lot more trainingPros:no counter inside airport so walked out to shuttle bus area after about 7 minutes called local Payless telephone number and they only had 1 agent working and 1 driver. He said the Payless bus would be by in less than 13 minutes. Then i noticed the word Payless on a Budget Bus which they co-share with Payless. The BudgetBus goes by about ever 1 or 2 minutes. Agent printed out contract for the $35 more than e-mailed quote. I had to sign contract taking gas option. But he said if i filed the car with gas before returnig the computer would take the $35 off. Returned it full but was charged anyway. Budget takes the return and give you the receipt for Payless before 7AM. When at airport filed a claim with Payless 800 number after getting ring and ringing of the local #. After reaching local they blamed computer glitch and corrected the bill. do it wright the first avoid Payless it not worth a few dollars.Reviewed Aug 21 2016

Overall Great Experience--with just a few minor exPros:Efficient counter service at both ends of rental period; good car (Ford Fiesta; actually better-performing than I expected).Cons:Cleanliness could have been better in some regards: Exterior was mostly clean, but it looked like the car-wash brushes never made contact with one side. Also--and a common problem with many car-rental companies--the interior windows were not clean. They get coated with a film that is easily removed (all cars do; it's outgassing from the upholstery and carpeting; worse in warmer climates) with Windex or similar cleaner. This film is not particularly noticeable during the day, but cuts down visibility at night--sometimes by dangerous amounts if built-up--as it scatters oncoming light and blurs images (front, sides, rear; all affected). Other minor-matter: all tire-valve caps were missing. This would allow dirt and mud to accumulate in valve stems and compromise their effectiveness.Reviewed Jun 2 2016

Jerks. Horrible everythingPros:I was an hour late on the reservation. Paul, the only employee there told me it had been canceled and it will cost me a lot more. They had plenty of cars. I stepped aside and made a new reservation online for almost the exact same price. Only problem is it wasn't good for an hour. Paul told me tough luck. Pay an extra $100 or wait an hour. I got annoyed then he told me he wouldn't rent me a car at all. I asked for the manager he said he was the manager. I left walked over to National, had a car in 5 min. Guess how often I'll use Payless again. 0 times is the answer. It's obviously a bait and switch with Paul making money on upgrades ETC. Check around-it might be worth paying a little morPros:Shuttle drivers and return attendant were very nice.Cons:My first car was filthy and the car was severely out of alignment. The second car ran so poorly on my second day that they had to tow me a new one after a 15 minute argument where they wanted me to initially pay the tow charges. There was never an apology for my inconvenience. The third car was pretty clean and ran well. There was no corporate number to call to follow up the poor local service. I will never use again. While I was in line another customer complained about a dirty smelly car and some people I was there with had similar complaints.Reviewed Oct 27 2015

Dishonest at west palm beachPros:The car was fine, no issues.Cons:Staff at west palm beach claimed the prepay fuel option was not optional, that "all their contracts have this" and only if you return the car with a gas receipt can you get this charge taken off. I heard the same story told to other customers. This was obviously a scam. When I returned the car to Fort Lauderdale as planned, they confirmed this was not proper policy and they had seen this before from west palm beach. The staff at Fort Lauderdale were very helpful and friendly, thankfully, but does not make up for the dishonesty.Reviewed Apr 11 2016

Local policies, rude customer service, long waitPros:Only the priceCons:It took 45 minutes from arrival at rental car location to driving off the lot in the rental car. After waiting 30 minutes in line to be helped I was told since I had a local address on my driver's license I had to prove my address with a utilities bill. I was never advised of this during my Kayak checkout. She said it was local policy since most of their thefts come from local people. I showed her my active duty military ID and I told her I was actually just visiting home on leave. That was not good enough for her. I'm an officer in the military and she is basically telling me that Payless is afraid of me stealing their car which I am renting with a valid Florida driver's license, military ID, and a credit card with a $20,000 limit on it. She treated me with a snotty condescending attitude. I finally was able to produce a military order I had on my smart phone and she was patronizingly satisfied. After all that the car wasn't even ready for another 10 minutes. Payless is collocated with budget but there were very few signs posted on where to park the car upon return. I also was forced to sign to prepay for gas but the agent promised to take that off if I returned it full with a fuel receipt. I did this and they did remove the charge. No other rental car company I've used does this. Very odd and just another reason I will pay more to avoid renting at Payless again. Overall TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!Reviewed Mar 30 2016
