Overview Reviews
After undergoing a property-wide renovation, the hotel introduces new and renewed spaces that enhance every aspect of the chic coastal charmer. All 177 guestrooms have private terraces or balconies offering unique views of either the Atlantic Ocean or the beautiful 18 holes championship golf course and gardens. Tempera is an all-day restaurant offering daily thematic buffets. Emprata Bistro presents a concept where the dishes are designed to be shared in a unique and casual dining experience. Light meals can be enjoyed together with beautiful views at Contato Lobby Bar. Cuisine is taken very seriously and our Chefs take great pride and pleasure in their creations. A state of the art fitness center is available for your workout, including an indoor heated pool, outdoor pool, Jacuzzi and Turkish bath. Also available is the Kalyan SPA, where you can choose a relaxing or invigorating massage or several beauty treatments. Kids will love the Kids Club with indoor and outdoor activities.
9,5 Excellent
Pros: The beautiful surroundings and the whole atmosphere
Cons: The fact that the hotel only offered complimentary bottled water on the first day Most 5 star hotels provide water on a daily basis
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The beach was stunning. The staff was very helpful.
Cons: Small thing - the hot breakfast items could have been better.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Spotlessly clean, good pool, no problem getting sun beds at anytime during the day, gym was good and much better than average hotel gym, staff were all very nice, tennis centre is well run, beautiful long beach - great for walks/runs/sunsets but not for swimming - big waves and strong currents. Breakfast buffet is substantial and pleasant. Yoga/Pilates and spin classes in the morning were good and reasonable cost (€5). Two offsite trips i would recommend are a visit to Óbidos and the trip from Peniche to Berlengas (on the fast boat, not the bigger slower ones).
Cons: There is a decent activity schedule but a lot of them are offsite (surfing/paddle board/football). The hotel is well away from nearest villages/offsite restaurants so strongly recommend you have access to a car. Onsite restaurants are pricy (in Portuguese terms) and would recommend trying restaurants in the local towns. It’s a quiet enough hotel compared to some resorts that have more entertainment and buzz - not a criticism but just good to know what you are expecting when you book.

Pros: Lovely resort, very family friendly and nice pool and great facilities
Cons: Food was just ok. Indoor pool you had to buy a bathing cap which was way overpriced
8,8 Excellent
Pros: My husband and I stayed at this hotel in early July 2019 for 8-nights and had a standard double room overlooking the adjoining golf course. * Breakfast was served until 11:00. Food varied and good quality, plus helpful staff especially Telmo and Leon … breakfast room can be somewhat hectic at times, especially the hour before closure ! * Attractive room, newly refurbished, with a spacious bathroom with bath and overhead shower. * Great sound-proofing in the room – was only ever woken by my alarm ! * Plenty of hanging and storage space. * Plenty of USB sockets, so adaptor plugs not needed only the lead. * Excellent air con in room, fully adjustable i.e. not set centrally. * Very comfortable 6ft bed, even in a standard garden room – slept 10 hours every night with absolutely no difficulty. The problem was waking up in time for breakfast ! * Lovely bed linen and super comfortable standard pillows (and there is even a pillow menu if the standard version is not comfortable enough). * Great window black-outs and quality curtains – important for me as I wake up at the slightest light ! * Large fridge and above it a kettle and tea & coffee-making facilities. * Attractive and well-maintained pool area, with plenty of loungers and umbrellas. * Lovely (empty) beach just a 3 minute walk from the pool area. * Generally plenty of parking – unless there is a conference on, as on the day we arrived and then we struggled to park until the evening. * Overall very helpful staff – I unfortunately had my credit card wallet stolen on a visit to nearby Obidos and the reception staff were helpful the following day, phoning round the places we had visited in Obidos to check the wallet hadn’t simply fallen out of my bag (which, sadly, it hadn’t, so all my debit and credit cards had to be stopped). We will return to this comfortable hotel for bed and breakfast - but will generally eat out unless the food and beverages become more realistically priced. 
Cons: o Expensive for drinks and food – about double what you would expect to pay in the UK e.g. E12.50 for a G&T ?! Dinner E29.95 pp for the buffet – we went to ‘Moo’ in Ferrel (excellent if you like steak) and twice to Taberna do Ganhao in Baleal (overlooking the beach and excellent for great service and a range of quality food). o No independent bars or restaurants within walking distance – unless you have a car (which fortunately we did), you are a “captive audience” for the hotel’s overpriced food and drinks. o No secure wi-fi network ….. had to create secure hot-spots in order to sign into my work network.

Pros: João was a fantastic host who was more than happy to give us some great tips on where to eat and what to see. Pros: The location was amazing, just next to the city wall. Everything was walking distance. The place itself was so nice and cute and comfortable and clean. The host was FANTASTIC. Showed us around the property, helped us with out luggage, made sure we had parking, gave us a map of the town with recommendations, shared some of his family's home made ginga. Breakfast was great as well. They have breakfast beginning at 8:35 am because the fresh bread arrives at 8:30 am. Everything was just wonderful. This was one of my husband and I's favorite places to stay during our Honeymoon through Portugal and we hope to go back someday soon!

Pros: Excellent location, wonderfully friendly staff, great breakfast, and the back patio was so peaceful. Just what we needed after a long day. 8,8 Excellent
Pros: Nice little boutique hotel which is in a great location for the main town area. Friendly staff on arrival and a welcome drink of the local cherry liquor on arrival!
Cons: Very difficult to find and the streets are very narrow to drive through. Call ahead and get good directions from the staff so you don’t drive around getting stressed for ages!
5,5 Okay
Pros: Good Location within the walls of Obidos.
Cons: We booked the Suite which is up a few stairs from Reception so you hear EVERYTHING!!! We had no sleep at all as all the clients coming in and out during the night all talking and chatting which kept us awake. The front door open and closing constantly was so annoying so the sound proofing is really poor. The parking was dreadful and driving into the main Obidos walled city was probably one of the most frightening experiences ever. Such a shame as the suite was really nice but you dont get any sleep which kind of defeats the object!

Pros: The location is set in beautiful gardens. The house is old but well presented.

Pros: Huge rooms and bathroom. Character of the property was something we’ve never seen before, felt like a palace! Really clean. Friendly staff. Pool was lovely.
Cons: Not really a bad thing but be aware breakfast is a very communal experience. All guests sit round one big table and pass each other the jam!
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Charming compound with pleasant gardens, clean pool, terrace with outdoor seating, views of the old walled fortress(which you can walk to), access to laundry. Inside, beds were only double size, not queen so a bit cramped. Kitchen had basic utensils for cooking, water pressure was good as was internet reception. Great for extended families, as plenty of space to spread out. Nice welcome spread and daily fresh bread delivery (breakfast served in main house only).
Cons: Beds, too small. Interior lighting was dim.
6,8 Good
Pros: Lovely location away from the town
Cons: Facilities aged, breakfast poor compared with many others in Portugal. Having an early flight in the morning had to skip breakfast and staff had no way of preparing a picnic substitute.

Pros: The location was perfect as it was near Obidos castle walls and allowed the ease of parking our rental car. The location also allowed the perfect view of Obidos castle. The ambiance of the property was serene, quiet, and just beautiful. Perfect for a relaxing getaway. The welcome wine and pastries were a delightful touch. We enjoyed intimate daily breakfasts with other guests in the dining room.
Cons: The toilet required a couple of flushes for complete emptying. Wifi was also only accessible in common areas. Not a big deal as it it is an old building.

Pros: WE took an uber here from Sintra. It seemed a bit distant from the village but a gorgeous 15 minute walk to castle walls through field of plum trees. We loved the pool and sitting out area. We especially liked the convivial breakfast arrangement where you sit at one long table and share stories. There are a couple of walkable and very nice restaurants close by. Would return. Obidos has a great bookstore in the church, and great local drink. Loved it.
Cons: I think lounge and reception area should be swapped over. Need somewhere to sit if it rained.

Pros: Great location - 9mins walk to the old town and very close to the supermarket. We were able to easily walk into town and even got a free ginja in a chocolate cup as we were staying at Pegada. They have free secure parking in the property. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was a good size, clean, and the shower was big with good water pressure. The breakfast was great - fresh bread and croissants with cheese and meat, yoghurt, cake, juice and hot drinks. We would recommend!

9,3 Excellent
Pros: Lovely breakfast, the air conditioning was great and heated up the room really quickly. It was clean and well decorated and I liked the communal room with the pool table and gifts and wines for sale.
Cons: I felt sorry for the three dogs being locked up all the time we were there. The property had a wall around it so I am not sure why the dogs couldn't be given more space to exercise. They barked during the night as well, probably desperate for attention.
Overview Reviews
The Pousada do Castelo de Óbidos is located in Vila de Óbidos and is one of the 7 wonders of Portugal. This Pousada is of enormous historical importance and includes medieval features from the 9th century. The castle was given as a wedding present by King D. Dinis to Queen Santa Isabel during their wedding that took place on site. This castle is one of the most impressive and romantic sites you can visit. It includes common areas such as the restaurant and Castelo bar. Don't forget the impressive esplanade together with the reception. At the Pousada de Óbidos you can choose to stay in the castle and have an authentic medieval experience or stay in the Casa do Castelo (located right next to the castle), where you will have an experience closer to that of living in town.
9,3 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location Great breakfast Exceptionally helpful staff
Cons: Small bedrooms
5,0 Okay
Pros: Lovely atmospheric hotel with friendly staff. Beautiful view. Nice bar.
Cons: Too hard to reach. Obidos is too crowded and felt like a tourist trap. The hotel smelled musty. The hotel should buy themselves a small motorized or electric luggage conveyance and the website should prominently display that they do NOT have parking on site. You must park in a public lot some distance and a steep incline away. The rooms are very small and there really isn’t that much to do in Obidos. In fact, if we weren’t so fit, we could have easily hurt ourselves lugging our bags up steep cobble stoned streets. I cannot recommend this place until they get some sort of shuttle. But they would still have unsafe parking.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The satff!
Cons: Small windows at the rooms - felt a bit too closed It was a challenge to get to your place with a car!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The buffet breakfast was wonderful. We ate dinner at the castle which outstanding! The accommodations and staff members were fantastic.
Cons: I cannot think of anything negative to say.
5,0 Okay
Pros: Panoramic view from the tower available only for visitors
Cons: Small room
7,5 Good
Pros: Lovely chance to stay in a converted castle.
Cons: I had VERY high expectations for this place based on other reviews. We've stayed in other "castle" hotels in Germany and thus were very much looking forward to this visit. Unfortunately, our stay was just so-so. The castle is lovely, however, our room(s) were down a few flights of stairs into what felt like a converted dungeon. It was very dark and not "special" as I had hoped. There was a very musty smell to the room that we couldn't rid -- therefore we spent as little time as possible there. A bummer as there wasn't all that much to do in the city itself. Also, I booked close to a year in advance and has asked for two rooms near to each other as we're a family of 4 traveling. Unfortunately, our rooms were not on the same floor (not a huge deal, but disappointing never-the-less). We would have loved to have had dinner at the Pousada, but there was a wedding (no hard feelings :-)-- but I think the dining experience was something I would have enjoyed that we simply didn't have.
4,0 Okay
Pros: The view
Cons: The stairs, the restaurant
7,0 Good
Pros: It’s a beautiful place, medieval castle and well preserved
Cons: Very difficult access by car and rooms very small, totally uncomfortable
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Good dinner and comfortable room despite it being dark. Arrows would have had a difficult time getting through the little windows, but we don’t live in a time of arrows. Atmospheric.
Cons: Óbidos was fine in the evening but I wouldn’t go back. Way too full of tourist day trippers. Town is a little ruined by its tourist destination success.
6,8 Good
Pros: Good location within the castle walls. Great views from the restaurant
Cons: The room we booked was one of the cheapest ones and on the bottom - no views, which is fine. But, everything was old and rusty. There was mold in the bathroom, and even floss left in one corner which indicates the room was not cleaned properly. There were stains on the duvet. So for a hotel that claims to be of such class this is unacceptable.
9,5 Excellent
Pros: The medieval market! The friendly staff and the amazing breakfast
Cons: The door being locked and needing to talk to the receptionist to enter the room. Maybe a buzzer would be more convenient. But I’m so happy for safe security. The staff does a good job of that!

Pros: A nice hotel in a quiet street, a 10 minute walk from walled town of Obidos. Lovely garden terrace, swimming pool, secure free car parking and breakfast included, all at a great value price. Even get a welcome drink of local cherry liqueur. Very friendly and helpful staff. They don't do dinner but recommend a number of restaurants in Obidos. I chose one and it was excellent.
Cons: Minor gripe. Lots of dead bugs in the pool.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Good location comfortable rooms helpful staff
Cons: Nowhere to put our bikes inside overnight. (There were 8 of us and four other cyclists were already using the garage).

Cons: nothing
9,3 Excellent
Pros: Good hotel with exceptionally friendly personnel. Clean and spacious rooms and tasty breakfast. Highly recommended!
7,0 Good
Pros: Location was very good with easy access to the city center
Cons: My room did not match the photos, but the room was an annex outside the property, I saw that the rooms that were inside the property were much better. Breakfast was very bad, I couldn't eat anything
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is 5 minutes walking from the city gates. I reserved it for the Medieval Fair, so we walked to the festival and left the car in the hotel parking lot. Hotel has a good swimming pool and a nice garden were to relax until late. Breakfast is full of sweets, bacon and eggs. The hotel strong point, however, is the staff. Always accomodating, always available. Will come back here next year.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Well located. V helpful staff
Cons: A bit dour. Breakfast room very dark and miserable
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Location is great, really just a short walk to the old city walls. Good breakfast. The rooms were clean and beds comfortable. A good option for us, as we were traveling with car and the parking si free and on site.
Cons: The whole hotel is a bit dated, but has all facilities one wants. Some rooms are non-airconditioned which could be a problem in the summer. A bit awkward to find in and out.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff ,location and price
Cons: Nothing
5,8 Okay
Cons: Even though we mailed for a non gluten breakfast and mentioned it again when we arrived- there wasn't one in the morning. Not ok! The hotel is very old and smelly.

Pros: This is a charming book themed hotel and we loved its quirky vibe coupled with comfortable rooms in a historic building. We had a quick one night stay and enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at the hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful and I had the best gin & tonic from their gin bar. This isn't the sort if place that will appeal to everyone, our room was small and the carpet was worn and the hall smelled like old books. Personally, I love the smell of books but if you're looking for a modern luxury hotel this isn't for you. However, if you're a bookworm looking for a unique and charming place to stay this is a great option.
7,5 Good
Pros: the hotel concept around books is very nice and duly developed. we did not eat at the restaurant, but had breakfast there. the cocktail bar is great, the service is hyper fast and they have live music often, really great. do not miss their gin collection
Cons: the breakfast was nothing special: eggs done only one way (scrambled), they do not have bacon, etc. the shower is quite old style and not very easy
3,0 Mediocre
Pros: Restaurant and bar in obidos.
Cons: The bathroom was dirty, the toilet was leaking. The bed was the most uncomfortable one I've ever slept in. Parking the car was no fun on a steep hill and very narrow street. Staff wasn't very helpful when asking what to see, just said that all the restaurants are closed... Which they weren't!!! Obidos itself would be pleseant if the people would take more care of it. The books in the hotel would be a nice concept if they would maintain them... They smell and there is no order how they stack them... All in all I wouldn't recommend going there... Not worth it!
9,5 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Such a gorgeous hotel, very quirky decor. The staff were lovely. The room was very comfortable and the meal we had in the restaurant was great.
Cons: The WiFi wasn't great and there was no hot water in the shower
3,0 Mediocre
Pros: Absolutely nothing
Cons: Everything: staff courtesy, communication, attitude, presentation. The room was filthy and never completed mid renovation. The bed was as comfortable as a rock. The furniture was built from rough scrap timber. No lampshade. No kettle for tea or coffee. Breakfast not until 8am. No door handles. Millions of stairs. Rubbish books strewn around with no sense or reason or understanding of the written word. Simply THE WORST hotel we have ever stayed in for over 40 years! Tourist trap.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Great concept for book lovers: perfect hideaway. And generous breakfast as well.
Cons: Might be that bathroom doors are good idea?
9,3 Excellent
Pros: Unique concept in an amazing setting. Great service and stuff
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The location was perfect for us, situated a very short walk outside the city walls. We easily found a place to park our car on the streets near the hotel. The hotel is really quite wonderful. Our room was very comfortable and felt private. The huge assortment of books are a great decorative touch, particularly for bibliophiles. Our dinner was absolutely incredible, and the guitar player and large hearth added a lovely touch of romance to the beautiful dining area.
Cons: The staff seemed to be of a small number, with people doing multiple jobs. This wouldn't have been an issue, normally, but we tried to go to the gin bar on two separate occasions when it was supposedly open, but there wasn't anyone down there to help us.
9,5 Excellent
Pros: The bookish decor was really unique, and the breakfast was bomb.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very cute and full of character. Perfect location and very accommodating staff. We were cycling and needed our cycling clothes washed and they accommodated us even though it was past the timeframe to get them back next day. Great value for money
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The actual space, rooms of the hotel are so unique and atmospheric. Helpful staff, excellent breakfast - great value for money.
Cons: Not an issue for us, but there is no wifi throughout the hotel, but you need to go to specific hot spots if you want to access the internet via the hotel free wifi.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: The comfort and how well the property was decorated and clean.
Cons: Nothing to point out.
7,5 Good
Pros: The villa is modern and very classy. The bed is super comfortable and you can really relax and clear your mind while staying there (I guess that if you have a lot of neighbourhoods you won't have a lot of privacy, but that wasn't the case for us) The kitchen is fully furnished and you can cook everything you want (you have to bring your own groceries) The real problem is when you want to wash pans & pots, no detergent nor sponges The bathtub with hydromassage was a pleasant surprise but I guess that a 5 stars resort should provide more products and not only a small bottle of shampoo and shower gel. The pool was really close to us, but I guess that a bit more of maintenance is needed.
Cons: No detergent nor sponges to wash pots after cleaning (there's a dishwasher, but you can't put everything there) Just a small bottle of gel shower and a small one of shampoo. A 5 stars resort should provide more. The pool needs some works, it doesn't look very clean. The supermarket is way too expensive, but if you bring everything from home, no need to go there ;)
6,8 Good
Pros: 1 bed apartment was huge and clean. Very good value for money
Cons: The service in the only restaurant was very poor, waitresses not coming to take my order for over 15 mins on a number of occasions. Over half of the menu was out of stock which for a 5 star resort was appalling. Shop on site wasn’t open either.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: One of the best and unexpected places. Beautiful, green and calm
7,0 Good
Pros: The house was beautiful and welcoming.
Cons: Dust over the furniture everywhere. Outdoor patio wasn't clean either. Old rugs on the floor. We asked for king size beds and were given single beds. Breakfast selection was poor and the breakfast room was so crowded we had to eat at the bar tables. Security guards at the entry are rude and confused. We were offered, as a welcome gift, half a liter of wine for 4 people.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast is good but it gets a little worse outside of weekends. Very quiet
Cons: The light isolation in the rooms it not great. The pool was not clean.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The confort, the silence, the space and the space outside.
Cons: Nothing to point at.
9,3 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff, particularly when requiring assistance and facilitating a late check out at Reception and in the Clubhouse bar where we had a couple of very good evening meals. The villas were very spacious, cleaned every day, and in terrific condition
Cons: Nothing really
6,8 Good
Pros: Facilities and comfort are really great Nice garden view
Cons: Staff and neighbours Staff not friendly at all And neighbors who own their own houses , cause the resort have rent and bought houses next to each other And that owners they think the have more rights than us we pay also and are really rude strict and not polite at all They even threatened us imagine...

9,3 Excellent
Pros: It's comfortable, friendly staff and offers good facilities. 2 pools, and wellness.
Cons: Nice and modern looking hotel. A few minor details here and there show that age is taking it's toll on the rooms.
6,8 Good
Pros: Good WiFi-connectivity, very good breakfast, friendly hotel stuff.
Cons: Outdoor pool was not appealing, the room looks run down (traces of a water damage on the wall, mold on the wall, curtains dirty), lot of flies in the room on arrival.

On check out we asked to buy tickets for a local festival and were given day passes to the festival in Obidos which was a truly pleasant surprise. Room was quiet and comfortable.
Cons: nothing to say

Pros: Nice stuff, very good location
Cons: Bedbugs in the room! Be careful if you’ve got an allergie.. It was so stuffy in here, very loud air conditioner.
7,5 Good
Pros: The hotel has a good location, right in the middle of this historical place.
Cons: The bed was not quite comfortable and the AC did not work; luckily it was not too hot the day we stayed there.
7,0 Good
Pros: Nice place in the center of the castle
Cons: Very low wi-fi signal in the room, very difficult to park the car
9,5 Excellent
Pros: Everything was just perfect except for...
Cons: Breakfast (poor choice + ubiquitous flies)
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Good breakfast! The kitchen worker was very helpful. Before breakfast, I needed a bottle opener, so I pantomimed because I didn't speak Portuguese and he didn't speak English--he opened the bottle AND gave me a glass!
Cons: There was a portable floor model air-conditioning unit in our room, which we used at night. In the morning, there was a stream of water running through the room from the A/C unit, which soaked my son's bags and shoes.
9,5 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location
Cons: Breakfast was disappointing
5,8 Okay
Pros: Rooms are big, comfy bed and airy and the bathroom is okay.
Cons: Hotel is a bit run down, staff not very helpful and my bathroom was not very clean.
4,3 Okay
Pros: Reasonable location to visit Obidos, but....
Cons: No access by car, need to walk 500m on vintage cobblestones with the luggage. Unfriendly and un-helpful staff. Arrived at 3:00pm at the same time as another couple. A lady standing outside the entrance asked what we wanted. When we said we had a reservation, she (aggressively) said no check-in before three thirty. The four of us sat in the heat on a tiny bench in the small entrance while she stood at the door. At 3:30 she finally sat down at the desk and checked us in. Note that the rooms were ready. The room and the bathroom were tiny, the AC was an antique portable (single) unit which in addition to being very noisy was rattling loudly (loose plastic parts), making sleep impossible. It was ineffective in beating the August heat. We had to switch it off during the night. The windows with very old wooden frames were single glazing. The floor of the room was 3 feet below street level. Breakfast was basic.
9,3 Excellent
Pros: Great location very easy check-in
Cons: Parking was not on site
9,3 Excellent
Pros: Very nice small hotel right in the heart of the historic walled town of Óbidos. The bedroom was large and had a very nice feel to it - with exposed timber beams and old style warm lamps. The breakfast had a good selection to choose from and was served at a sensible time. The staff were friendly and helpful and reception had long opening hours.
Cons: Our SatNav struggled to direct us to the hotel as it is within the city walls. The best solution was to park outside the city walls and walk in which wasn't far at all.
