Pros: This is a fabulous hotel. Old building but everything that you would want to have re-done, re-done. Wonderful bathroom, heated towel racks, great bathtub and shower, plenty of room. Lots of electrical outlets. High ceilings. Lovely floors. Comfortable bed (maybe not quite firm enough for me, but tastes vary in this area). Super-dark roll-down shades. Also great location across from the train station, but also very accessible to a main street to all the important sights. Also two very good restaurants within the hotel. Very friendly staff. Fluent in English but happy to speak to a guest in Italian as well, even a non-Italian.

We booked a Junior Suite, but when we arrived it was basically just a big room with a comfy chair in it. I spoke to Reception and they immediately found us another room with a balcony and a better view and couldn't have been more helpful. Breakfast is very good, loads of choice and its served in the restaurant which is next to the marina, and there are tables to eat outside when the weather is nice. The beds were very comfortable, the air conditioning worked and everything was spotlessly clean.

Cons: There was nothing that we didn't like as such. The safe in the room is quite small - not even big enough for a small laptop computer. A tablet would probably fit, but I had to leave my laptop locked in my suitcase. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and the food was perfectly good, although it lacked atmosphere - having said that, there are hundreds of really good restaurants a few minutes walk away in the town, so its not a problem at all. But these are small details in an otherwise very good hotel.

My husband & I came from Cinque Terre transferring in Levanto where my purse was stolen with our passports, my credit cards & money. Lucky the thieves just took my money. The thieves threw my purse on the sidewalk where someone in Levanto found it & turned it in. Luckily I had one of your cards in my purse as we had stayed with you a couple of days the week before. Levanto train station phoned your hotel & the staff were excellent in relaying the messages from Levanto.

Staff extremely friendly and efficient, nothing was too much trouble especially when I'd forgotten my adapter and they let me borrow one for the duration of the stay. Extra pillows and coffee arrived promptly. Breakfast was nice good variety. Visit Portofino a must - 50 mins to santa margherita on the train 3.60 euros. From there you can take the boat or bus. We walked the coastal route took about an hour but you see so much more, it was stunning.

Cons: Given this is a 5-star hotel I was pretty shocked to realize there was only cold water available in the first morning of my stay, which translated in a cold shower and shave. This was my first experience of such a case despite having attended about 150-200 business hotels all over the world. I was even more surprised to see that the hotel had not a single iron available, urging me to attend the congress without wrinkled shirts. I think that such problems (negative experiences) can always happen (although I have to admit it was a bad coincidence to find out about 2 uniquely experienced grievances during my first morning). However, the way how the gentleman at the reception handled my surprise & complaint about these 2 grievances was by far the worst part of my experience. My conviction is that a 5-star hotel should definitely try to make up for such a disruptive guest experience and offer a free massage, drinks or another service such as free ironing. The location of the Melia hotel within Genova is ok but far from outstanding. The hotel has been kept clean and offers a standard breakfast. IMO the breakfast does not meet the standards of a 5-star hotel.

We appreciated the welcoming staff, the clean and spacious room and bathroom, and the very rich and high quality breakfast (great price of 8 euros per person). The hotel also has a fitness centre and a spa. It is located in a romantic area of Genova, and the room had a great view over the city roofs. The area around the hotel is safe, full of restaurants and cocktail bars, and well connected to the Genova railway station Parco Principe through the bus and metro.

Cons: The shower was tiny and the door was so small I am glad I could get in but many people now days would not. The view was a wall so we kept the roller shutters down, felt like solitary confinement. The lift was about 1mt. square so two cases and two people was a squeeze , lucky we do not suffer from claustrophobia. Trying to even call the lift was a joke as every time on the first day it was full when it arrived ,that means three people. We ended up using the stairs!

The hotel is at a nice place (historical center and marine) but everything is so dirty all around. Most of the people around are immigrants and you feel really unsafe.

Not clear to us, nor why there would be a €20 surcharge for a second person. Thankfully we were not charged but on checking out, the staff insisted we had booked two nights and not one. Luckily I had email to prove them wrong.

Cons: You get what you pay for, a very basic, nothing room and hotel in what we felt was not the best part of town - however, staff was wonderful. Beds were very hard and didn't get much sleep. My husband drove all over looking for the parking lot and when he couldn't find one and came back to the desk, then they told him "oh, just park it out front and some one comes and gets it and brings it back when you want it" - would have been nice to know before running all over the place in a hectic city.

Pros: The mattress provided in sofa bed was run down stained and saggy We could not sleep all night and they simply said sorry we can’t do anything about it as we are fully booked Next day room was changed but all day I have been complaining that AC is not working no one has turned up to fix and every time I called I got the same answer we don’t have any technician available and even that night we could not sleep as it was so humid they have not cancelled neither compensate us for not offering the services Extremely unhelpful staff in fact extremely rude they don’t want to listen the problem and resolve it and simply they have don’t care attitude

The stuff of the hotel was not attentive and friendly to the guests: we asked to give us one more blanket to the bed and were rejected because it was possible only one blanket to one bed:( The breakfast was very limited and not fresh. If compare with other hotels 4* with similar budget - this Novotel isn’t match to them.

Pros: A gorgeous view overseeing Genoa. It's close to the port - and it's actually one of the cleanest ports I've seen in my life. Extremely professional staff and a decent breakfast by continental standards. I would highly recommend this, particularly if you are going to the ferry the next day.

Cons: Bed was to small, AC didn't work in room. Joint entry door with next room was like they were in my room! Just not a good stay

Pros: Spacious room, nice towels
Cons: They turn off the air conditioner at night because they expect you to open your windows to the "cooler" air. The place is next to a port operating 24/7 loading and unloading cruise ships. Extremely noisy and bright lights all night. The windows are approximately 6ft long by 4 ft wide and you have to open the whole window. There were gale force winds coming in and blowing everything around. So there was either no air circulation with the windows closed or a wind tunnel with them open.
The beds were too firm for our liking.
Not a place to get a good night's rest.
