When it comes to renting a car in Munich, you need to take advantage of the quality German vehicles on offer – try out a reliable BMW or Mercedes. Whether you want to venture onto Bavaria's open roads in a convertible or cruise around the city in a luxury SUV, a mid to full-size car is perfect for Munich’s well-managed roads.
Navigating Munich means abiding by the federally mandated speed limit of 31 mph. When you drive within the city’s limits, you must be careful to stick to the speed limit, as going over by 3 mph can already result in a speeding ticket. It’s best to slow down and obey the traffic laws, in the city center. If you want to go at a faster pace, then get on the surrounding autobahns, where the suggested speed limits are around 80 mph but drivers legally have the option of going as fast as 200 mph.
Munich offers visitors various types of parking. Depending on the areas you want to visit, there are parking zones with differing tariffs. You can park within the Altstadtring for up to two hours at €0.50 ($0.57) per 12 minutes. Parking outside this area is half the price or you can park all day for €6.00 ($6.80). On average, garages in the city center will cost from €3.00 – €4.00 ($3.40 - $4.54) per hour or €20.00 ($22.70) for the day. You can also find large parking lots on Adolf Kolping Strasse and Max Joseph Platz. It’s best to avoid parking in the Old Town as it’s full of one-way streets that offer little in the way of parking.

Pros:
Pickup was fine and we were given an upgrade at no quoted increase in cost. Representative spoke English well.Cons:
I was charged $890 after I dropped off the car, almost three time what I had already pre-paid, with no explanation of what the charges were for. When I noticed the charge on my card within minutes, I immediately sent them an e-mail requesting justification for the charge. 9 days later, still silent6,0 Okay

Pros:
The car was good. We rented a van that seats 7 to have extra room for luggage. We were at the Munich Airport location.Cons:
Our travel plans were changed due to a flight cancellation, so we tried calling Avis and they were useless and rude. They told us the only option was to take a taxi to the original location and take our chances that they held the car. We did that and waited in the Avis line for 2.5 HOURS! The price ended up more than expected, wish we would have just flown and taken the train.6 locations in Munich

Cons:
Address on reservation didn’t match the actual location of drop off. Drop off was located almost three blocks in a different area and was extremely difficult to find as it’s all located around a very busy city and train station. We also didn’t have cell service so we couldn’t just look up a different address.6,0 Okay

Dec 2020
Pros:
Car was not what we reserved, but was ok.Cons:
We were forced to take the additional insurance after I showed proof of having full coverage European insurance through USAA, and an American Express card that paid any deductibles. It was a rip off and a scam. I've rented cars all over Europe for many years, and have not been forced to take additional coverage. Rental was reserved over a month in advance, with no mention of this "policy". When we arrived in Munich at 10PM, on the weekend before Christmas, we were forced to accept it because there were no other cars available in the area.4,8 Mediocre

Dec 2019
Cons:
We paid for an SUV, but arrived at the airport to find that Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty all share a desk. There was a very long line and not enough employees. There were also no cars available. They were having people write their names on a list and as cars came in, you were called to come get a car. You got whatever came in, which in our case was a compact. They didn't adjust our rate to compensate for the size difference. Additionally, our credit card and car insurance both have rental car coverage, however, they stated that unless you had one of four specific credit cards, you couldn't decline the coverage required for Germany. The coverage alone was higher than the rental rate. We had no choice to pay, but what should've been a $100 rental turned into a $250 rental. The required Germany insurance information should've been posted when making the reservation and they should've over-rent for the inventory they have.6,0 Okay

Pros:
Drop off was easy.Cons:
Vehicle had a mechanical issue and no help was available. Overcharged and no one responds to requests for contact to address the issue. No receipt provided at rental OR at drop off to show the amount I was going to be charged was more than $1200 more than I agreed to pay.5,6 Fair
Sep 2019
Cons:
I was expecting it to cost around 100$. Instead it cost me 200 because the forced me to get insurance- even though I’m already insured. Also they put a 500$ hold on my credit card and charged everything in euros. I still do not have my money back. I’m upset over this.6,8 Okay

Pros:
Car return was easy.Cons:
Only at the counter was I told that I needed written proof of my credit card rental car coverage. I did not have it with me not did I know a way of getting to it. Why was I not told at time of purchase that such proof is required? This tactic felt like road robbery!27 locations in Munich
