The Covington Houseboat - Saint Paul - Building
1
9,6 Excellent (73 reviews)
R2 708+
Overview Reviews
Stay the night on the Mississippi River – literally – at the Covington Inn. This houseboat is trimmed stem to stern in mahogany, brass and bronze, extending to guests the elegant comfort once reserved aboard historic work vessels for company executives and VIPs. Windows and portals in the boat's tiered design draw light into each room. Sleeping quarters feature a mix of ingenious built-in cabinets with simple furnishings from the Covington's work era. Salvaged fixtures, nautical antiques and historic art provide tasteful reminders of the river and the inn's past life. Sitting permanently moored within the reflection of downtown St. Paul's towering skyline, The Capitol, museums, theater, fine dining and shopping wait just across the bridge. Offering a place for both a quiet getaway and the city spree, the Covington does it all. Beyond the privacy of the staterooms, the salon provides a comfortable gathering place. Lit with clerestory windows and furnished with fireside couches and window-front tables, the salon offers a great place for breakfasting, letter writing and browsing through the Covington library of historic river and shipping books. Our breakfasts, cooked in the boat's galley, pamper you with just a touch of the gourmet while fueling a full-day's exploration.

Pros: We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our stay very much. It was a great change from the same old hotel stays we usually make. It was a quiet and everything you would need seemed to be thought of. The location is easy to find and of course could not have been better. We will plan a return when we have more time.
Cons: You certainly don't need this space for the Covington on this trp. All Good.

Pros: The hotel had a classic feel. The lobby was beautiful and had lovely chandeliers and sofas. The rooms were spatious and the beds were comfortable. The connection to the skywalk was great!
Cons: The bathrooms were a little small.

Pros: Historic and fancy
Cons: Wish they had a pool But not sure how had they retrofit one.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The views were spectacular. Best bedding we've stayed in. Staff was great. Easy parking options. Room was VERY clean. Toiletries were fantastic. Easy in and out for uber/lyft. Close to all restaurants.
Cons: Nothing... Everything was perfect.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Most comfortable beds and linens. Love the location, amenities, lobby and bar are always welcoming. My favorite hotel of all time.
9,0 Excellent
Cons: Thought the fee to park overnight $30 was a bit high for the market (St. Paul) and then not enough staff in AM to get car so we waited about 15 minutes.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the easy access to xcel center and restaurants via skyway.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Quiet peaceful. I don’t recall seeing anyone else on our floor until next day.
7,0 Good
Pros: Friendly staff, great location
Cons: There were a number of up-charges, that for this style of old hotel and room price we thought should definitely be included; the worst was wifi. The free wifi was throttled, and there was a $12-13 charge per day for high speed access.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Historical charm, excellent staff.
Cons: Don't pick up anything off the refreshment bar!!! It automatically charges you!!
3,0 Mediocre
Pros: The location was great.
Cons: The staff seemed to cater to the "rich". The price for the room led me to believe that the room and amenities would be outstanding. The staff was less than inviting and our only interactions involved us being asked if we were guests. I have stayed in nicer hotels for a fraction of the price, I would never recommend this hotel to anyone.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION The staff was very helpful and polite.
Cons: Not very many amenities. I would like free breakfast. Access to my vehicle once parked would be nice too.

Pros: The breakfast was fantastic! Made-to-order omelets were wonderful, and so many other choices. Lots of choices in food items. The rooms were very spacious with lots of counter space.
Cons: Offering green tea packets, and adding some more seating in the breakfast area as it was quite crowded. The pool was a bit cold.

Pros: Large area in lobby for guests to gather.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast included and king suite with sitting area. Most important was the private separate bathroom with two doors
Cons: Breakfast should include turkey sausage and bacon. My family doesn’t eat red meat/ pork.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Obviously the embassy suite breakfast with made to order omelettes are the highlight of the visit. The rooms look brand new with updated furniture and fixtures. Bed was comfortable.
Cons: One of my towels smelled bad, but they gave me a new one. Not sure if it was just folded while wet. Also, when we were checking in, they got a little annoyed about us asking for adjacent rooms even though we called ahead about it. They accomodated though
10,0 Excellent
Pros: What I liked most was how the room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was extremely good
9,0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was amazing! The pillows in all Hilton hotels are incredible! All of the staff was amazing and friendly. My daughter and I loved the complimentary happy hour and how family friendly it was!
Cons: My only complaint is the size of the pool and hot tub. Both are way too small considering how large the hotel is. The pool area was so packed it was hard to even swim.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: set up and comfort. fantastic staff all around
Cons: not at all
7,0 Good
Pros: Very nice room size
Cons: The hotel staff are very rude spoke with the district manager to resolve a matter and they were very disrespectful and hung up on me

Pros: The staff was super friendly. Check-in was simple. Thank God for the shuttle and the drivers! The 5:30 to 7:30 complimentary drinks were great. The food was great and breakfast was the best selection I've ever had. My son loved the pool.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: I recently stayed here during the 2016 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships which took place in St. Paul. This hotel is really nice, tucked neatly right off of I-94. Was easy to find and is in a quiet buisness park just outside the Minneapolis Metro area. Check in was seamless (I used e-check in) and they had everything ready to go. Really nice staff at check in. The rooms are very nice. Modern decor and very clean. I stayed on the south facing side (718) which meant no noise from the Interstate. My room was the two room suite but is really more like 4 rooms with a sleeping area, common area with sofa, kitchenette/mini-bar, and bathroom. Everything was really clean and comfortable. The bed was heaven. Having the microwave and mini-fridge came in handy. The bathroom very spacious...plenty of towels. Lots of closet space and the floor was really quiet...never heard a peep. The breakfast was delicious as well. Ate there most mornings. Made to order omlettes and everything else. Attending an event in St. Paul I had been concerned I was staying a bit far away but the travel time to St. Paul was only about 15-20 minutes...super fast. Just get on I-94 till you get there. The hotel is really only about 7-10 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. Very accessible. I can't say enough good things about this hotel. The price was perfect as well. Really upscale stay without breaking the budget. All staff always with a smile and very friendly. Stay here!
Cons: Nothing!
1,0 Poor
Pros: Room
Cons: There was a big argument which almost led to a fight. My kids where afraid to continue swimming.

Cons: It was difficult to find food delivered to this location. I appreciated the listing of local restaurants but I was too tired to drive and get food so it would be really helpful if there could be connections with local businesses for the hotel to recommend to ordering in food.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Great experience. We stayed there to go see a St. Paul Saints game, and it was centrally located, a nice hotel, good staff, good facilities. I really enjoyed it. Nice of view as well.
5,0 Okay
Pros: The partial view of the Mississippi river from our window was nice.
Cons: The sheets were never immaculate - either there was a hole in it or there were black flecks on what were supposed to be white sheets. Also, the curtains were dusty. Lastly, the fire alarm sounded on our final morning (5am-ish) there and there was a smoky smell but it turned out to be some air vent issue. However, management didn't even inform us of this immediately. I was pretty panicked but management didn't take initiative to calm and inform us of the details of the situation. We had to go the front desk find out.
4,0 Okay

Pros: It was clean, the rooms were well laid out and not claustrophobic, the location was good and the pool was unusual and great.
Cons: The breakfast, though with hot options, was fairly basic.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Location was convenient. It was quiet throughout the night. Appreciated the breakfast each morning.
Cons: We were looking forward to the hot tub, and it was nice, but looked pretty dingy, like it had not been cleaned in a while, and the jets shot water up along the wall instead in towards the people sitting in the tub.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were always close by for any questions or concerns. The staff were very accommodating, and worked very well with my check in times.
Cons: The only problem I had seen was that the parking lot was very icy and slippery even though the last couple days have been well above 32°, and there are a lot of thick snow/icy areas making it sketchy to get in and out of cars.
4,0 Okay
Cons: The breakfast was stale every day. They were out of a lot often. The waterslide was only open weekends, so when we booked to check in Saturday we only were able to use the slide one time. We stayed until Wednesday. We were ALL super disappointed...this is the reason we booked THIS hotel over others. We asked for connecting rooms, we were given one that had a door and one without. Told they didn't open when they did. Asked for a different room, and they said they don't connect (when they do) we booked two rooms because of the size of our family, having four kids 10 and under. We didn't get connecting rooms in the end. The pool had no towels and ants from beer left out the night before when we went swimming Sunday evening. It was gross. Dirty.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very friendly, and the rooms were spacious and had what we needed! The pool area was also very nice. The lady in the breakfast area was particularly lovely, and stopped and chatted with our family a few times.
Cons: We found the hotel was a bit further from city centres than we thought, but it was still a fairly good location. Target and Trader Joe’s are very close by! I was also not a fan of the breakfast, but that was personal preference.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: cleaning staff was nice. fun slide in the pool.
Cons: no
10,0 Excellent
Pros: No hassles; continental breakfast; checkout time
Cons: everything was great!

Pros: The staff is always very polite and friendly and helpful. The rooms are a great value and the perfect location. It is nice to have a refrigerator and microwave in the room.
Cons: The rooms can be warm. The temperature is always set very high when you arrive. And it's takes time for the room to cool down. The bathrooms are not dirty by any means, but the fans and walls could use a scrubbing.

Pros: The evening staff was very polite and accommodating. The housekeeper was lovely. The price was great.
Cons: The temperature control did not allow for a cooler room. It was extremely hot. And the smell from the pool wafted through the whole building. The day front desk staff was not very friendly.

Pros: When you walk inside the front entrance it looks like a small village. Railroad tracks through the inside. There is a small bar inside, no need to go back out if you didn’t want to. There is a smaller building inside that served as a breakfast area. Plenty of seating and a good selection of food. Beds were comfy and rooms were clean. We will definitely visit again.

Pros: The size of the room was nice. The staff was helpful. The eggs were good at the breakfast.

Pros: The room we had was very nice! Clean and orderly. We very much enjoyed the pool and spa. Very nice to use after a long, fun day at the State Fair. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good with good coffee which is important to me.
Cons: The bed was way too hard for my taste. I prefer a softer bed. Other people would probably think it is just fine. This is petty maybe, but I didn't like how music was pumped everywhere ...in the Pool room, breakfast area and outside. Hated that a lot.

1,0 Poor
Pros: The price ....but like the husband and said you pay for what you get. I just thought a hotel would have standards. I do and I wasn't expecting too much but cleanliness shouldn't have been an option of what I was looking for in a hotel room.
Cons: The room looked like the only thing that was cleaned when the past guest left was the trash liners. The room needed a good deep cleaning. The side of the fridge, range hood, walls, sheets & windows were all dirty. The room had a heavy grease smell that we took along home with us. A rag was hanging from the plumbing under the bathroom sink and who knows how long that has been there. The lamps were bent and it looked like there was no effort put forth to try and make them look semi presentable. Take just a little pride in your establishment and vacuum the hallways; the attention to minor details was very underwhelming. Last but not least the entryway/front desk area had a strong odor of weed everytime we would enter or exit.

Pros: The size of the room was perfect. The hotel was relatively quiet until my last night. My room had a great source of light. Ordering Doordash was easy.
Cons: A 18 wheeler parked his truck by my room every night. The walls were kind of then so we could hear our neighbors, including downstairs. Someone had a party my last night there and they were smoking weed and the smell came into my room. Concierge were kind of nonchalant. Staff was rude, wouldn’t speak if you said good morning.
