Bentota hotels

Pros: The room was great and comfortable, it had a very nice balcony, everything was clean. Also we spent the new year with the owner's family, this was very special because they shared their traditions with us and let us into their home, they are the nicest people! Last but not least, the food was amazing, we were very happy to try all those traditional dishes.

Cons: We don't really have any complains, although a suggestion would be to have a sign with the name on the street so that guests can find it more easily.

Pros: From the moment I entered this property, I was made to feel more like a family member than a traveller. My room was sparkling clean and overlooked a lovely garden from the balcony. I had a meal prepared by Dolitha's wife and it was the nicest Sri Lankan meal I've had on three visits to the country. Please do not hesitate to stay with Dolitha and family!

Pros: Here you get more than just a stay. It's like you're a part of the big nice family. They are all open and friendly. Galin was so glad to meet us at airport after 3 hours waiting for us (we were doing paper things for our dog). Dalitha is very good and honest owner, ready to help with everything we need. Also it was easy to communicate – they speak perfect English. Everyone from the family was so nice, friendly and with beautiful Sri-Lankan smile. Everyday a great breakfast was served for us with love. Also we ordered dinner everyday, and each one was delicious. Room was also nice, clean and with jungle view balcony. We are so happy visited this place! And hope to stay here again!

Pros: It's a perfect place to enjoy Bentota while staying away from all the activities! The family that runs it are super friendly while not being overly intrusive.

Pros: Location is great for beach and restaurants. Breakfast is freshly cooked along with fresh fruit.

Cons: Booked the studio room for 4 nights so was disappointed on arrival to be told because a group had decided to stay longer we were being put in the double room. The room and bathroom was smaller and the air-con was non existent making it a most unpleasant stay. We were finally given the studio early evening on the third night, but unfortunately it seems anyone who pays more money can have what room they like regardless of bookings.

Pros: We stayed 4 nights in a wonderful room (super clean and comfortable). The fence is located about 10 minutes from beach. So it’s quiet at night times and if you wanna hang out at the ocean site, they got a deal with the rock hotel (very close), where you can use the whole facility. Best breakfast on our trip! Every day they prepared for us a different dish. As well we highly recommend the famous annanas curry for dinner, you have to try this!!!! Finally: Dolitha and his family are very careful and super friendly. They all speak fluent/perfect English. We just can highly recommend a stay at The Fence!

Pros: The host family is wonderful: extremely attentive, super friendly and warm-hearted. It's also easy to talk to them because they all speak perfect English. They were so courteous with a (super) late check-out so I could enjoy my last day of holiday. They also accommodated for my food allergies and prepared a special breakfast for me, which I appreciated so much. Since I extended my stay I stayed in two different rooms and both were spacious, super clean and comfortable. Long story short: I highly recommend staying at The Fence.

Pros: I had stayed in their other property close to Yala two years ago and was not disappointed with this property either; they are similar in many ways. The room is really big, with a HUGE bathroom and I even had my own little library of books - there are more books to read/swap in the reception area. It isn't actually on the beach - it took me around 20 minutes to walk there - but it is surrounded by nature and lovely birds. The food is also wonderful and Karen is a great host. Great wifi too - when I mentioned I couldn't really connect from my room they immediately gave me my own router!!!

Pros: The property is to a very high standard . It’s probably been one of the nicest if not the nicest place I’ve stayed . The staff are unbelievably friendly and will do anything for you . The food is delicious and the rooms are very spacious and clean . Loved every minute of being in the Shangri-Lanka and will definitely be returning !!!

Pros: Beautiful large room and balcony with picturesque views of the surrounding jungle and pool. Only a short tuk tuk ride to the lovely Bentota beach. Very helpful staff and a perfect place to relax for a few days.

Cons: There was an incident that really shocked us! We arranged a driver from another hotel to pick us from shangri lanka to his stay. The owner of shangri lanka threatened the driver to hit him and damage his car, if he would pick us up from shangri lanka! As customers we cannot accept such unprofessional behaviour, thats why we wouldn't recommend this place.

Cons: I like a sheet/duvet a little thicker on the bed. It’s very thin and though the AC is needed (otherwise it’s too hot), I woke up too cold a couple of times. Perhaps an extra blanket or thin duvet could be put in the room for those who need it. As we wake up around 6am, we weren’t able to have tea or coffee until after 7 when the staff arrive. It would be nice to have a kettle in the room.

Pros: The suite was huge and luxurious. The room had numerous art pieces that makes it unique. The bed and the sheets were extremely comfortable. The bathroom had a large bath. There is a lovely pool in the gardens with sunlounges and unmbrellas. The chef serves excellent food. Prem was there to assist with meals and anything else you require. Thank you. Hope to return one day.

Pros: We felt totally relaxed the minute we checked in. The villa is set in beautiful peaceful and lush tropical gardens. The room was enormous, beautifully decorated & immaculate. The staff were very friendly and provided exceptional service, even down to lighting a mosquito coil under the table on our balcony so we could sit outside comfortably in the evening and soak up the tranquility.

Cons: Some matches in the room to light the candles in the bathroom but that is such a minor point.

Cons: The service was terrible, the room was missing stuff like the hair dryer. The food was not that great, not much variety and certainly very poor quality for a 5 star hotel. This should not be a five star. There are other Hotels and Resorts in Sri Lanka that are of less stars but gives a phenomenal service compared to what Taj Bentota had to offer

Pros: The location of the resort is perfect. You can enjoy the beautiful sunset at the poolside. Rooms are super spacious with good small library inside.Staff is very friendly.

Cons: There was not much crowd at the resort. Thus the atmosphere was very dull. Food was okayish and was not available 24/7.

Pros: The staff was very friendly and hospitable. The room was very big and neat with a big balcony with a good view on the pool and the lake. We were invited to have a look in the kitchen when the chef was preparing our Sri Lankan curry's. He explained the whole process and we tasted everything. The curries were delicious. The next day, the hotel staff took us on their private boat for a tour through the mangroves and bentota lake during sunset. It was a fun and absolutely stunning trip. On top of that the staff will bring you to the beach with the resorts private boat for free. We had a very relaxing stay with great service. a

Pros: The location of WATERSIDE was special a quiet spot right on the river with a SUPER swimming pool meters from the rooms block. The WATERSIDE has just 6 large rooms which is relaxing with a good feeling of space. The breakfast and food/drinks generally were of very good standard with wonderful very locally caught fish/etc on occasion shown to guests prior to cooking/buying. The WATERSIDE has superb and wonderful service particular thanks to Mr INDIKA who is generally around plus at breakfast/dinner, he has good experience/understanding and ideal English language skills. The Manager we met Mr Amila (I think) was a relaxed gentleman and most helpful, he assisted us with a jump start to our hire car (left out light on, stupid) I will say if you have good worldwide driving experience hire cars in Sri Lanka are an OK option but one does really have to use Google maps with a Sri Lanka Tourist SIM card (OK price with 10GB for 30 days) up to date SAT NAV maps are not so easy to buy or download prior to arrival or possibly even in Sri Lanka itself much as they exist, it seems. The Managers brother or cousin ran the kitchen and produced good fresh food for us clearly we did not try everything the hotel had a wide menu served in a very pleasant very large open but covered/fanned dining area.

Cons: Nothing NOT TO LIKE, really. The hotel is not hip or cutting-edge modern (no restaurant music or similar) but that is the charm and NOT what the guests often over 35/40 years of age, are looking for.

Pros: Beautiful Garden & Pool as well as the beach in front of the Hotel is worth a visit!

Cons: The hotel is over 20 years old and despite some renovations it looks old. The staff except for one lady at reception were rude and unprofessional and expecting to be tipped for every service. Pool chairs are reserved by the guest and labeled by the pool attendant, once again for a tip! Most Guests are over 50 and German, so everywhere you go in the hotel you are addressed in German. If you are anything else than German you get ignored and if you are Indian looking and female, no attention is given what so ever! The western food presentation is outdated and the taste blend, the local food is westernized with no hint of spice at all! The room was very spacious, but old and worn out, located directly over the restaurant. Mattress was old, hard and supported by a wooden board underneath.

Pros: European standards of clean, the room was comfortable with a nice view, the lounge chairs by the pool were fantastic.The gardens were beautiful also and there was generally a nice atmosphere. pretty much what you would expect from any 'all-inclusive' hotel, even though I only went for the breakfast arrangement.

Cons: Hotel was completely German, including the information in the room and the movies showing on the television. For someone who is not German, this was a but frustrating. Hotel is filled with middle-aged people. As a younger female, I the hotel staff was a little to eager to interact with me and even approached me outside the hotel.

Pros: I liked that it was small children not allowed hotel.

Pros: Location is great, right beside the sea, attentive staff and comfortable environment.

Cons: There are two restaurants which gives a reasonable choice for residents. Would suggest the chefs get some training on cooking beef and eggs, but otherwise food is good.

Cons: Very loud hotel we could never sleep longer than 8am. When you order something to eat/drink you often wait 30-45 min before you get it. They have 2 pools but one has absolutely no shade so everybody wanted to use the other pool so there was never space for all. We went to the beach and had to pay there additionally.

Cons: We booked a luxury room with sea view and a complementary 15-minute spa. We were given a room with no sea view. We objected then we were given a smaller (lower class) room. As it was hopeless arguing with them for 30 minutes after a 5-hour drive Nuwara Eliya, I asked them for a refund which they refused. They asked me to cancel through booking.com. Of course I did not as my booking was non-refundable and they asked me for that so I can claim nothing (my feeling). I threatened to call the tourism police. Finally, they gave us the room that came out of nowhere saying it was booked by someone who had not shown up (as if I had no booking or as if it was given to me for charity). They knocked on the door 15 minutes later asking us if we could receive a maintenance team for 10 or 15 minutes (imagine)? The room and the toilet smell. The sinks are clogged. The view form the balcony chairs is blocked by vertical steel bars and a horizontal steel beam that is exactly on the same level as the eyes. The view is also significantly reduced by the slanting top of the room so actually it is not that sea view you have in mind. Avoid it if you have any sort of alternative.

Cons: We arrived very late in night around 2 AM. And had to wait long for the gates to be opened. A 4 star property should not have such a system. I expected at least guards to know guests are expected and gates should have been opened immediately.

Pros: Too many things to love in this stay- a tastefully designed villa that will take you into Portuguese history, spacious rooms guaranteeing a comfortable stay, pool access to enjoy your evenings, sumptuous cooking done the Sri Lankan style, and hospitality by a great team. The peaceful Bentota Beach is walking from this property Our friend, Puthom was always there with a smiling face to ensure our stay was worth remembering. The people at the stay also helped us when a colleague lost her wallet. A special mention to our driver Sankar, who came in to help us at the airport and assisted us in getting back the wallet. Overall, I highly recommend this place for people looking for some peace and quiet during their stay while being taken care of the Sri Lankan way!

Pros: Staff really work hard to make your stay special. Really extensive breakfast of fruit, juice, toast with butter cheese or jam, followed by bacon and eggs as you please. The hotel it 4 km from the town centre and the river, but staff are always on hand to give you a tuk tuk ride to wherever you wish to go at very reasonable rates. £1 each way into town. However, the restaurant good is so good that we ate in every night for our four night stay. Alcoholic drinks are a reasonable price also. Beautiful well kept garden and large swimming pool with sunbeds with mattresses. We loved it here, and preferred a small hotel to the large characterless options on Paradise Island up the road. A real Sri Lankan experience.

Cons: Wifi was a little patchy, but this seemed to be the norm in the area. Buying a local Sim is a good tip.

Pros: Hotel is beautiful and well maintained. Location is excellent as it’s right near city but secluded enough to be very quiet at night. There is a train track at the back of the hotel between the hotel and beach with fairly regular trains but it’s kinda nice and doesn’t cause any major disruption. Staff are very friendly but all male with exception of front desk service.

Cons: WiFi was sporadic and unreliable at times. Rooms are sparse so only one sheet and no extra linens provided. But this is my experience with other stays in Sri Lanka.

Pros: The staff were amazing. So friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The location is great really close to the beach and set amid coconut palms. Food in the restaurant was good, portions were huge and great service. Tuktuk driver was great, took us to some lovely places - if you go here ask Cece about the waterfall!

Cons: Property is in desperate need of routine maintenance. Some paint and repairs to broken walkways would be a much needed improvement. The property has many stairs and no lifts, not mentioned at all on booking.com. Train line runs literally 25yards from the dining room and you have to walk across it to reach the beach. (there is a staff member there during beach open hours to help with safety)

Cons: Hard wooden furniture not suitable for sitting on, reading and relaxing.

Pros: There were plenty of sun loungers and towels were included. The property is right on the beach, which is beautiful. Large selection of food on offer for breakfast. It is also very close to the train station, and there is nice restaurant on the other side of the tracks.

Cons: We had arranged an early check in but it was not available on arrival. We downgraded our room so that we could have a room asap. The room was basic but clean. We changed to a delux room the next day. We were shown 1 room but it dark so we changed to a brighter room on the 1st floor. It was nicer but there were dead flies squashed into the walls. Each room we saw had different toiletries. Some more, some less. We had to ask for towels twice. Staff at check in did not offer any information. We asked where the pool was, how to get towels, where to eat etc. It was only as we left did we see the 2nd pool and spa. There was no information available in room or around the hotel. Mosquito nets would also be great.

Pros: Location......that's it. It is right on the beach and if you like surfing then it's a nice location. Still......Give it a miss big time.

Cons: This is a classic hotel where the location has been deemed by the owners, as enough to justify the room charge. When we arrived, the room was not ready which is ok, but when we eventually got the key, the room smelt like three children had vomited in location which could not be cleaned. We call the reception and the sent housekeeping to simply mop the floor. We eventually got a new room but this hotel needs to lift the servicing of it's air conditioning maintenance, and also ensure rooms are fit for occupancy. Give this place a miss.

Cons: Staff were very reluctant to serve. One of our rooms had poor air conditioning where the staff didn’t try to rectify it plus when we asked to change rooms they were doing it reluctantly.

Pros: Lets start with the good stuff. I stayed over the Christmas break and the hotel was completely decked out with decorations and music. It was Christmas overload but very festive. I stayed in a deluxe room with balcony and sea views. The room was on the second floor and looked over the relaxing pool with stunning views of the water. The room was spacious, clean and the bed was comfy. The hotel was nicely decorated and well maintained I have been to other hotels in the area and the EKHO would definitely be the tidiest . With its awesome views of the ocean it was a very relaxing stay. The staff were amazing. Very attentive happy and helpful. Especially Asanka who always checked in on me. I paid for half board for breakfast and dinner. The food was average, it catered to most peoples tastes. Christmas eve dinner was nice, Christmas day dinner was a bit uneventful. The hotel actually met my expectations even though I was slightly hesitant when reading previous reviews. I travel extensively and found this hotel a lovely place to stay at and I would recommend it to others.

Cons: The other stuff and recommendations... I wasn't overly impressed with the water pressure in the shower. Parents allowing their children to run a muck was annoying, especially at midnight. The way the café is run could be looked at. Instead of having to run back and forth to the kitchen which is situated on the other side of the hotel, maybe having light snacks already in the café i.e sandwiches, pastries etc... and its own coffee machine. You have the space to do this.

Pros: While the property is perfectly located, the services were poor. Check in was delayed 3-4 hours and the property was understaffed. We had a particularly bad experience with the staff who behaved in a racist manner.

Cons: It was a damp room. No ventilation in bathroom. Can't open window because of mosquitos. So room is closed. The air, smell is inside the room on bedsheets and everything. Staff was helpful but room was way below my expectations. I was there for two nights, couldn't sleep because of the stinky smell coz of no ventilation system anywhere.!!!!!!

Cons: The room was smelling like very old damp room with termites. When asked the staff says it is room freshner, I am not sure if there are any room freshner with old damped termite fragrance!! All bathroom fittings very old and not cleaned and furniture was also old and not maintained at all. Not worth the price. AC room remote was broken.

Pros: The food and staff were excellent

Cons: The room was small but the bathroom/ensuite was minute! Once you had got into the shower the only way out was to back out, it might have been okay for children.

Pros: Easy to access location with a nice beach area. Loved the garden area. Breakfast and lunch served in the restaurant was good. Clean and comfortable rooms.

Cons: Staff nut following up, I stayed 2 nights, on arrivals I payed full amount of my stay, but no money change to return back to me, I said it’s ok once you get give me. Once I checked out the reception said no change so far and I informed the manager to give the changes but nothing he give. If staff don’t follow up and caring of money to take it’s very poor service No towel No water No waste bin I highly don’t recommend to stay there The other staff very nice and helpful But I won’t go again there

Pros: Room was clean, AC worked perfectly, the Cabanas are beautifully surrounded by nature, a lot of squirrels and flowers in the area, staff is friendly and the sea is in easy access

Cons: Shower is a bit unusual, but very exotic
