Multicultural environment, helpful multilingual staff team, mix of people and ages (families with kids, group traveller, students, younger and older travellers), scrumptious filling buffet breakfast w/Western&Japanese options (miss the made-from-scratch miso), excellent view, secure facilities, nonsmoking environment , vending machines, water, more! It is a chance to meet people from different countries but also have private space to work or study in one of the cubby areas. Breakfast is a good place to meet and chat, though regrettably, instead of being a hostel cafeteria where all can mix, it has been changed to restaurant style with space blocked off (frankly that feels cold and unfriendly, and though decor has improved, the old way was much more friendly and we enjoyed sharing time by talking and sharing with people buying breakfast, cooking meals and staff...which is the point originally of the international youth hostel to share and grow socially(hope they keep the nice decour butopen it into non-restaurant but instead cafeteria shared space.

Why is alcohol available from vending machines, being served, and people returning drunk and stinky in a youth hostel? Behavior of some guests rude. The international hostel was originally intended as a training ground for social interaction and growth, training fo consideration as well as flexibility. Putting up with inconsiderate behavior and encouraging it, was NOT the goal. Late entry with repeat ruffling through luggage after 10PM or worse throughout night (better done in hall or common areas),turning/leaving full room lights on when others are sleeping or late at night, banging doors/lockers, talking on phone, etc all show a lack of awareness. Hostel staff should educate and kindly but firmly direct guests to an awareness that they share space. Sleeping areas are for sleeping. If people want to behave without regard to others, a private room is more appropriate. Regrettably it is hard to be quiet if using locker, they are so noisy. Also, wifi needs improvement. Dorm wifi rarely works well and using late night means going into darkened hall ways, a bit spooky at night...maybe one area should be left gently lit as a work/study space at night?

Beautiful view over Tokyo & even the Fuji-San early in the morning. In a nice area, near Kagurazaka street & the Imperial Palace.
