Cons:At drop off there was no one to accept car. Had to call national, who then called the airport, who then sent someone out to look over the car. Glad we were early!Reviewed Mar 24 2021

Walked awayPros:When we first got to the office we were told they could not honor the Internet rate we got through kayak. So instead of $106 it was $177. Surprised but ok with it for the monthly rate. But then it turns out they cannot or will not accept any other insurance plan but their own, mandatory. Not US insurance which is understandable but also not Amex. Ok then, what s the rental rate with insurance? $1270. Yup. Not a typo. The office could not give us any breakdown and gave us all sorts of numbers which we could not make any sense of. We could not get info on what was the car rate, what different insurance plans there were. It turns out it is the law to have Panama insurance, which is obviously ok, but the rates the rental companies charge are crazy. At the very least there should be such information available when you book online. We decided to not rent the car in those circumstances and they were not very nice about it but we were not charged.Cons:Not honoring internet rate. Not explaining the various rates and insurance fees.Reviewed Nov 7 2016

Watch out for the cost of the insurance!Cons:Prepare to pay three times more for the cost of insurance. The rent was $87 and the insurance $ 240. And it is mandatory to take, they won´t allow the use of any other insurance, even though you have one. Do not expect the same service you receive in the USA. I booked an SUV and they gave me one of lower level (Creta instead of a Tucson) arguing that they were of the same level. It clearly is not. In Thrifty Panama, there is no policy to give you a better car if they do not have the one you rented, you get a worse car one for the same price, even if you disagree. They do not offer the transfer service to the hotel or airport. You should take a taxi in an area that is not safe. I do not recommend it.Reviewed Jul 18 2017

What a sham!Cons:I was led to believe I had rented a Jeep Wrangler from Thrifty for a total of $50 for 5 days. I had a confirmation and confirmation number. When I got to the counter, I was told that that price would only get me a two-person Suzuki Jimmy and if I wanted a Jeep Wrangler it would cost $25/day plus $40/day insurance. I am a Hertz Gold member and would have rented a car with them if Kayak had not led me to believe they would get me this price at Thrifty. I will NEVER rent a car through Kayak again.Reviewed Oct 12 2017

Take a bus and/or taxiPros:The Thrifty counter staff was nice.Cons:I requested a 4 wheel drive SUV because the roads in central Panama near the Santa Fe National Forest can be a bit hazardous without one. When we got to the Thrifty rental agency, they had given away all of the SUVs and we were stuck with a shitty little Kia, and they would not reduce our rates. I suspect we were the lucky ones though as many travelers waiting in line behind us didn't even get a vehicle that they had reserved. Some serious arguments started breaking out, and I suspect a few fists were going to fly. We got the hell out of there as fast as we could. Next time, we'll just take the bus and/or taxi, since one can get pretty much anywhere in Panama by bus with a combination of taxi. This was not worth the extreme amount that you will be charged for insurance (double the price of the car), and they hassle of trying to negotiate with Panamanians who know they have you in a corner.Reviewed Jan 3 2016

The car wouldn't start & then they charged me to refuel it!!!!!!!!!!!Cons:So several times the keyless start didn't recognize the key was there, until finally the car wouldn't even open. We had to open it using the manual key, but there's NO WAY TO start the car without the car simply 'recognizing' that the key is near the car. We FINALLY and MIRACULOUSLY got the car started and drove it directly to the hotel so we would be safe to have them come get it. They brought ANOTHER key and that didn't work either, so we switched vehicles and they asked me to fuel it up before I brought it back. What the heck? And then they charged me full price to fill it up when I returned the second car. I NEVER make poor reviews but these guys are THE WORST. How the heck am I going to fill up a car I can't start!????????!!! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. I'm so angry I'm beyond more words.Reviewed Oct 16 2018

Panama City Airport Thrifty Customer Service is AtPros:They didn't give us a car even though we had a online reservations. The reason I was given is because their desk system takes 4 hours to synchronize with their online reservation system.Cons:The lady working the desk was not helpful at all and very patronizing when describing to us why she couldn't just rent us a car even though we had a online reservation. After her explanation we asked if we could make a booking with her, she took 10 minutes to tell us how the rates at the desk would be $300 (it looked like this was just made up) for 3 days instead of the online quoted price of $84 but after all that she said she had no cars. All in all one of the worst customer service travel encounters I've had in my life.Reviewed Jan 8 2017

Terrible Experience from Start to FinishCons:When I got to the rental car desk, I was surprised to find to out that they refused to accept my existing insurance coverage through my credit card and forced me to sign up for their far more expensive coverage that literally cost 11x the price of the car per day. When I dropped the rental car off, there was literally no one from Thrifty at the lot. Every other rental agency had someone present, but I had to leave the car outside, go talk to an agent inside, check in for my flight, RETURN to the rental desk to finish the check out process, then get back in line for airport security. Awful experience.Reviewed Dec 1 2016

Misleading price informationCons:I made a booking for four days for 20 US D and ended up paying US D 136. When I make a booking I make the choice on the price I am offered in bold figures and it is unfair to charge then 6 times the price. The issue with the compulsory insurance may have been mentioned somewhere in the fine print but it is a dishonest not to disclose it properly. My credit card covers the car insurance but that was not accepted as such. From now on I will associate your car rental platform with tricky business practices and I am unlikely to return.Reviewed Apr 12 2016

Cons:These people are rip off artists. We are experienced travelers and I had confirmed my insurance coverage available to me through my credit card before I left the country. When we arrived to pick up the vehicle they refused to accept the coverage and refused to allow us to rent the vehicle unless we paid their insurance. It was EXTORTION!! I recommend having several reservations lined up so when they pull this B.S. (and they will) you can walk next door. We paid over three times the quoted price.Reviewed Aug 26 2016

Pros:NothingCons:There was no car at my arrival. They wanted to give me a smaller car, more expensive, and dirty. I had to cancel the reservation on the spot and start looking around for other rental options. Just horrible!!!Reviewed Mar 10 2017
