Pros: If you want to experience an older style of hotel, tradition then this is the place to go. At the front door you leave your shoes, are welcomed to the hotel by people dressed in traditional kimono's. I did not get to experience the hotel food as teh restaurant was fully booked, and so went to one of the local places that serve a marbled beef similar to Kobe. I am not a flexible person and so staying on a futon and sitting cross legged wasnt going to last long. Hower, a few chairs and table made up for it. With a Sake street nearby, a very old shrine with and even older gingko tree (1500 years), it is a far cry from the bright lights and big city. You also get to wear the traditional robes around the hotel and everyone wears them for the traditional Japanese breakfast. The onsite onsen is a nice way to start or end the day.

Pros: Very good value - Ryokan is 1.5km out of town but the owner picks up and runs a shuttle service. He’s incredibly helpful. This was our only stay in a Ryokan and a good experience. The food in the Ryokan was great and very good value. We enjoyed the Onsen and our two nights on the futons!

Pros: Ryohan is located in the hill side and not far away from takayama station. Mr. Murayama is versatile in management for the ryohan matters. My room has got a view of glittering autumn leaves in multiple colour. It is fascinating. Though the public bath is quite small and not open-air, you cannot expect more at such a moderate price .Dinner is delicious and satisfactory .The most stunning scenery should be the nearby environment where trees ,leaves , cottages ,and paths combines a picture of natural beauty for a morning walk. Your luggauges can be left behind and later will be delivered to you at the station up to your request.That is an excellent service for the tourist.

It was possible to open the window and thus get nicely cool air in the room. We had guite nice broad view from the 6th floor and it was surprisingly quiet during the night. Overall one of the best sleeps we've got during our three weeks in Japan.

Pros: Big rooms and beautiful views from the baths and top floors. The breakfast was a variety of dishes (and included a more modern buffet if the traditional dishes weren't to your taste). I loved how there was a variety of both private and public baths to try. There was also a convenient shuttle to take you to/from downtown and the train station every hour.

Cons: Made the mistake of reserving a "twin" room which has two very, very narrow beds. If you are a couple, be sure to reserve a queen or something like that. My mistake. Even for Japan, this is a very small room, so tight for a couple with luggage.
