Pros: We were allowed to do an early check-in, mama, otoosan, and obaasan were really friendly and helpful when we asked about how to find good restaurant etc, we had a nice private onsen, good night sleep, and a grand breakfast.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The old couple who manages the ryokan is adorable, they were very helpful and suggest us places to visit and where to eat. I wasn’t sure if i’d like the tatami but it revealed being super comfortable and good for my back! the view from the room was amazing, and the traditional japanese breakfast was excellent. i’ll make sure to come back when i visit japan again!
Cons: the room was a bit cold
8,0 Excellent
Pros: This ryokan is owned by an old couple who were very warm and welcoming. Even though they don't speak much English, with the little bit of Japanese I know we could communicate without major problems. Just a note: in winter the traditional house was very cold, but we were provided with space heaters and it wasn't a problem. And the dinner was fantastic!
Cons: none.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The staffs were nice and friendly.. Warm welcome from the old grandparents.. they are so cute and funny ◡̈
9,0 Excellent

Cons: Not much to complain about.

9,0 Excellent
Pros: Location was a 20 mins walk from the bus/train station with some uphill parts. Remember to arrange for transfer (arrival and departure date only). All staffs were superb (check in staff speaks good English). You can get your coffee/tea fix in the common area downstairs. Love the onsen bath which is alternately switched daily between male and female. The most amazing part of the stay was the food....the dinner/breakfast spread was just amazing served by motherly Japanese ladies (you can feel the pride and love when the chefs prepared them)..I would come to stay here just for the food.
Cons: The room is clean but average looking...maybe a bit old but this is not a big problem. Highly recommended.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was excellent! The staff was very nice and the facilities were beautiful.
6,0 Good
Pros: The room is a little small for 4 person in a family. Noise isolation is bad. However, the food are execellent.
Cons: The staffs can speak English.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Before arrival, I have lot of questions about the stay and staff members of the hotel will answer me within a reasonable time, efficient and politely. I am very satisfied with the meals, especially the dinner. Many types of food in the set and all of them are delicious. In addition, order a sake with the dinner is recommended.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great - food, baths, room. Great value for the price. Location is not too far from the center, just 5-10 mins walk.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: The food was amazing! The baths were clean and warm. The staff was friendly and communicative, they even gave us a printed photo to commemorate our stay. Overall, they went out of the way to make us comfortable.
Cons: The vinyl slippers were too slippery, and would come off your foot as you walk up and down the stairs.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything in this place was a wonderful experience!
9,2 Excellent
Pros: A unique hotel full of Showa atmosphere, with every reasonable price. One of a kind even among Japanese onsen ryokans.
Cons: The room’s toilet has a smell unfamiliar to me. Not bad but more like some kind of food rather than refreshing. I suppose the hotel is understaffed atm, which is understandable because it will cost so much if all the decorations around the hotel are to be cleaned every week.

8,3 Excellent
Pros: Private Onsen and beautiful dinner were a highlight
Cons: Very pricey without the feeling of luxury
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Everything is perfect. From the rooms, to onzen, food quality and presentation and staff services.
Cons: Yes the dining room was too smoky with so much barbecue going on at every table. The room was abit stuffy.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The most exception dinner, delectable dishes made with local ingredients. One of the best onsen ryokan dinners and breakfast I have had! The public onsen has a beautiful open view of the serene mountain surroundings, we never had to share with anyone and the ryokan was quiet and peaceful. The best service by the hotel staff.
Cons: Nothing
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Every single detail is perfect, the food is out of this world and the room couldn't be better, you have your own private onsen. It is the best experience we've ever had in our lives.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Lots of privacy for room with private Onsen. Japanese bed was nicely setup and very comfortable. Friendly staff and nice services. Wonderful dinner served in eating facilities. Staff even cleaned our shoes for us.
Cons: Would have been perfect if meals can be served in room. Wooden bath tub in room seemed a bit dated.
6,3 Good
Pros: private bath Staff was very kind
Cons: I have been fukuji area twice and stayed in 4 hotels, this is the only one that I will not recommend. Indeed not worth the money. 1. The dinner was not good enough considering the price. Lots dishes went together maybe I don’t know, for saving time? the breakfast was better. 2. The private bath was not very clean, neither of the chairs in the room. 3. The dinner room was extremely smoky when we had our dinner which concluded some bbq.
Ryokan Tanabe - Takayama - Building
5
9,2 Excellent (699 reviews)
R3 515+
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan was very clean and comfortable. Staff were very friendly and efficient. We had the Japanese dinner and breakfast in our room , which was very nice. The location was excellent, within a few hundred metres of the old houses and shops just across the river.
Cons: Perhaps being located right in the heart of town, there aren’t many amenities on the property, besides the onsen.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The Ryokan has its own onsen both indoor and outdoor. And the location is at the town central and lots of eating places around. Everything close quite early so better have an early dinner when it’s winter time. The room is spacious and futon very comfortable, there’s even own hot bath in the room. Have a good sleep every night after great dinner and onsen. Tried the Ryokan kaiseki and breakfast and it’s quite worth the money.
Cons: Everthing is good. Pricier than other accommodation due to its facilities and central location. Only kids have to pay extra for using the same room, but we do get special discount and extra futon and kimono
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Great ryokan! Super nice staff. Very traditional. Dinner serving lady was very insisting that we put on our yukatas correctly.
Cons: Latest breakfast is served at 7:30 am. Way too early for a vacation! Onsen in the morning also only open from 6 to 8:30. So you had to get up really early, decide for breakfast or onsen in peace or both in a hurry. But maybe that's ryokan style. (Hehe, no chance of sleeping again after breakfast, since the beds are gone for the day.) Rooms and onsen have seen better days, but not too bad and that was really a minor thing. Onsen could be hotter. Overall it was a great experience anyway. And well worth the money
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The room was clean and had all required amenities. The location is superb, on a central street next to bars and restaurants. The cooler had Japanese beer which was really refreshing. The hosts were excellent, very polite and helpful. They also gave us some souvenirs as gifts. The breakfast, served directly to the room is a great experience on its own.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: The room was great the staff was great. The location is amazing - so close to everything!! I love the onsen the most! Overall it was a good stay.
Cons: The only thing that I didn't like was the staff was trying to enter my room for cleaning without knocking and they basically walked in on me naked as I just had a shower.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Nice quiet ryokan with private bathroom facilities with choice of inclusive or non inclusive meals.
Cons: Having to leave footwear at the unsecured front door.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Everything!
Cons: The beds were a little hard so I struggled a bit a night. Other than that everything was perfect.

Pros: the service is perfect as the staff always knows what you need before you tell them. the onsen and foot bath were well maintained and towels and other facilities were readily available. food was excellent and we ate till we were stuffed and happy!
Cons: a little far away from the main attractions - but this also makes the property quieter and unique.
7,5 Good
Pros: The outside onsen is gorgeous. The beds they prepare are comfortable and special. The smell is very good all over the hotel. It is a relaxing athmosphere
Cons: The food was not that great. We ordered a vegeterian meal but they didn't remember, than we had to wait 2 hours for them to prepare it and it wasn't that good...

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff were DELIGHTFUL. thank you tana. Dinner blew our minds. We were treated so so well, a real treat. Amazing rooms. Lovely to be able to use the foot spa at the sister hotel. Lovely lovely
Cons: Slight drain smell in the toilet in our room
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Very spacious room and friendly attentive staff.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Great attentive and friendly staff, spacious accommodation and food to die for. Catered well for children with a separate menu. Everyone raved about the Onsen and how good it made their skin feel afterwards. Definitely recommend Hanaougi.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: 1. The food is amazing! 2. Service is great! 3. Comfortable stay! 4. Very boutique hotel! 5. Love the natural hot spring!
Cons: None! I saw some people said the location is not good. But for me, I really like this location. It’s not in the city center, therefore more quiet. And they have shuttle bus from the hotel to the station. It’s very convenient for us.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Hospitality was one of a kind, the private onsen in our room was divine and absolutely worth the whole experience. Dinner was excellent and a great value for the money. While getting the meals is optional, I highly recommended getting it as the value to cost is so worth it! You're getting a lot of food for what you pay for... I could barely finish my meals! Small details like an apple juice in the fridge, an explanation of amenities and schedule, and coffee at checkout speak to their commitment towards a perfect stay. The staff is knowledgeable in English so there shouldn't be problems with understanding each other, but my girlfriend spoke Japanese so she made my experience smoother. I would love to come back in the future on day.
Cons: I didn't like that I could only stay for one night!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The service from the staff were excellent especially our hostess Riho, Takao and Kazuyuki. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. A wonderful cultural experience for us. Thank you.
Cons: Not much

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! This is the 2nd consecutive year that we went back. In fact, we were so comfortable with the place that we decided to stay 5 nights this time round! My girl loves everything in Honjin.. from the exterior to interior, from hot spring bath to food.... it meant so much to us to how much all 3 of us enjoyed. In fact, the hotel was kind to inform us that the dinner menu might be repeated as they do not have very extensive menu. However, we had all different menu for all 5 nights! We are very grateful to the chef and team who has put in such effort for us. In a nutshell, it is highly recommended for people who like hot spring bath, a quiet yet near amenities hotel, great food and great people. See you guys next year! I hope =)
Cons: Nothing! Everything was great!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location. It is really workable to everywhere from this hotel.
Cons: Nothing. Only grouse is no outdoor hot spring bath for ladies
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Most of the staff are very friendly and polite. Location is very good.
Cons: The property was very busy and push my breakfast to 8.30am but the restaurant was closed at 9am which gave me only half hour to rush through my breakfast. I had to request for 8am breakfast and still the reception told me 8am was very busy. I have to tell her that 8am is firmed. And I had my breakfast at 8am. I expected the room to split into two sections/parts (one section for meals and living and other for sleeping) which I had stayed before in other Tatami hotels. But the room was all in one which made me to really the room.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The Kura hot spring was very nice and the guide was helpful along with the staff. The room is quite spacious and clean, plus the food is great. Definitely recommend this hotel.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: - clean - attentive staffs - good view - nice dinner

Featured amenities include a business center, complimentary newspapers in the lobby, and multilingual staff. 7,5 Good
Pros: Staff were super friendly! Hidagyu was also very nice for dinner. It is a little remote from the station but they offer free shuttle bus service and it is very quiet and nature friendly. Strongly suggested for those who wish to have a relaxing trip.
Cons: Foods are a little expensive, breakfast could be improved by replacing bread with something more light (in terms of oil). Also, you can sort of hear noises from next door due to thin walls. Also, the price was a bit high for the location (although the price was largely affected by Takayama autumn festival season).
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Makoto-san is super friendly, the rest of the staff as well. He is able to pick you up from / bring you to the station at your chosen time and is very helpful (even dropped us off at Hida folk village and later brought us to the station) The breakfast was very good & tasty. The accommodation feels very cozy, and we enjoyed having our own little living room where we could relax. Everything is super clean, having our own little bathroom was perfect. There is also tea time at 21.00 downstairs!
Cons: You can feel the springs in the mattress, it's a bit uncomfortable.. still slept like a baby though (after walking all day). If you have less considerate guests they will wake you up due to the thin walls, but this is no fault of the accommodation itself. We had bad luck the first night and good luck the second :) It has central heating, for some the warmth is a blessing but we opened up all the windows. I also noticed the air was very dry inside, I wear contacts so did not like it.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic friendly hosts, great food, cosy guest lounge area.
Cons: Bedrooms we're a little tired and could do with updating but we're spotlessly clean.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Great stay . Very relaxing .
Cons: It’s a fair way out if town but Marco is very willing to work with your schedule to pick up .
7,1 Good
Pros: Really nice quiet location, trees view from the window. Really nice hida beef dinner, good and big meals (breakfast and dinner), even though not thoroughly japanese in style. Really friendly and helpful staff. Clean toilet and bathroom.
Cons: Room way too hot and dry! And couldn't regulate the temperature by ourselves. Was stupid of me not to ask about it, but the first night we had temperature of 20 degrees C, the second night was 22 degrees!!! Had to open the window to cool off a bit, but there were no mosquito net so we were afraid of insects coming in.. I hope that upon request they can lower the temperature.. because we were really in an oven! Really nice stay but felt a bit overpriced overall, probably due to the Takayama spring festival that was going on during our stay.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Facility, Foods, and services
Cons: -
7,9 Good
Pros: Hotel was far away from town. Owner was very friendly and gracious and picked us up at the train station and returned us to the station the next day. House is full of items from Spain where his parents lived many years ago. Area was very quiet and beds were comfy.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The accommodation is situated a bit out of town, but this is no problem at all, due to Mako providing transport services to and from the train station. Rooms are clean and the service is impeccable.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Dinners and breakfasts were varied and delicious. Makoto drove us in and out of town multiple times. Owners are friendly and helpful. Excellent stay in a beautiful town!

7,0 Good
Pros: Bed was really comfortable, decoration was beautiful
Cons: Maybe was a bit overpriced
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Good location and large, comfortable room.
Cons: Liked everything but experienced a problem with the room booking. Booked a room for 2 adults and a child. As our child is over 3 years old and needed her own bed, we could not use the 2 person room with shared bathroom that was booked. The host was able to accommodate us in a room with 3 beds and private bathroom at an extra cost, as there was a spare room but this would have been a problem for us if another room was not available.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: The cleanliness of the facilities The hotel having a kitchen and lounge area
Cons: The smell of gas from the heaters in the stairway
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely charm and great location

The facilities are excellent. I had a single room with toilet and shared bathroom which was very good. Clean and comfortable. Actually this review is by Julie from Australia. I set up booking.com account for my friend Sue in Nepal.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: the location is quite walking distance from the station and not signage showing to the inn. we have to depend on the google maps to find it. but the inn was superb and our room is super nice. my friend loves it so much
9,0 Excellent
Pros: A traditional Japanese style guesthouse with modern interior design. There is a small kitchen with oven, microwave, refrigerator fringe for guests to make their slight meal. Provided with free coffee and tea, just feel free to have a cup. Quiet environment with a lot of restaurant nearby.
Cons: I once thought the heating system is electric, until I smell something is burning and saw fire flame inside. The owner/guest (a Japanese uncle) told me that it is burning with oil... Feel a little bit not safe but the uncle said it is common in Japan, so its ok.

Pros: though the location is not within the walking distance from the station, they offer chauffeur service to/from the station. they were also kind enough to agree to drop me off at the morning market the next morning instead of the station. so I can take a nice and easy walk from the market to the station, which I really enjoyed it. the communal shower/bath (onsen), if you go early in the morning when it first opens, you can probably have it all by yourself which I again enjoyed it very much!
7,9 Good
Pros: Pretty Japanese traditional house with a lot of comfort Enjoyable Onsen
Cons: Location is average No meal option available for breakfast and dinner during our stay
8,3 Excellent
Pros: We loved having bikes at our disposal at any time. Being a little on the edge of the main part of town it made it easy to go wherever we wanted to go. The location was very quiet and the owner was happy to pick us up at the station on arrival and drop us back the when departing. Takayama is a beautiful town. The morning markets along the river were a great place to eat breakfast with lots of different foods to try. We loved our 2 night stay in Takayama.

Pros: Due to an event, I stay at this hotel for 3 nights and felt comfortable with stay. The hotel is well maintained, and the onsen is particular good. All rooms face same direction and has a beautiful view of the city. The restaurants are good. Breakfast was good. It is a large hotel, so expect some tour and more people than one can find at a smaller ryokan, but rest assured one won't feel crowded.
Cons: The hotel is like 3km from station, and is 1km to main road. For those that drive that is not an issue, otherwise has to factor in the commuting time back to town.

Cons: It is a very large hotel, away from town with 3 bars and 3 restaurants. All were closed at 10pm
