Luckily, toll roads do not exist on the freeways and larger roads in Suriname. This is a great saving on your travel itinerary, and you will not receive a toll bill when you return the vehicle either. You will require a tourist card if you cross certain borders within the country, so ensure you check with your car rental agency about what paperwork you need for longer road trips. Roads can be challenging at times, so always look out for obstacles and consider hiring a GPS as there may not always be sufficient signage.
Although you can drive from as young as 18 years old in Suriname, you can only rent cars from the age of 21. You will be charged a young driver fee if you are under age 25 and probably be restricted by many car rental agencies in terms of the luxury or prestige vehicle ranges. Some companies may have an upper age limit of 75 for car rental, too.
The average price of Suriname gas, measured per gallon is about 57.20 SRD (1.85 USD). This is quite comparable to the US prices of gas per gallon. You will find that Suriname has more than enough gas stations to stay fueled up, including large fuel global names. If you are planning on driving to more remote areas, consider a canister of gas in the trunk to avoid breaking down.
The speed limits in Suriname are measured in kilometers. In urban areas, you can drive 40 km/h (25 mph), whereas on rural roads you can drive up to 60 km/h (37 mph). When you reach the highway, you can push your car rental to 90 km/h (56 mph). Speeding is taken seriously, and if you are pulled over for infringement, it is best to settle the fine on the spot.
