Keflavik car hire experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who hired a car in Keflavik
MikeFeb 2026
For City driving, definitely not a big car, streets are narrow and parking is sparse. For driving around the island, all wheel drive and a more rugged car is recommended. Some roads available in summer require 4x4 to access.
LiuAug 2025
I prefer SUV in Iceland, although the chance of driving on F road is very small.
Verified travelerJan 2025
If you’re going in winter make it an SUV!
Verified travelerDec 2024
I would say based on being there in winter if you don’t have a 4x4 with spikes on the tires you wouldn’t be able to go anywhere but I think that is very standard and we didn’t need anything more
Verified travelerSept 2024
If you are travelling in groups (more than 2 people in total), you will need to rent a SUV. The space of the car we rented was too small. In addition, if you are going to travel around Iceland, you will need a better car, like 4x4, because some of their roads are not well maintained and there're a lot of hold on the road.
KellyAug 2024
Rent a larger truck to manage off roads. The ring road is one of the only paved roads outside of Reykjavík. Even 0.5 miles off the ring road is tough without a good car. Don’t let tank go less than half full as gas stations can be hard to find
Verified travelerJul 2024
Most cars in Iceland are pretty small, if you're a single person, get the smallest car you can. If you're a four-person family, especially coming from the states, get a midsize SUV.
MikeJun 2024
As of June 2024, only Hertz, Europcar, Budget and Avis are in the terminal, don’t believe anything else.
Verified travelerAug 2024
You will run into unpaved roads. Be prepared.
Verified travelerMar 2024
Read the fine prints of car insurance coverage very carefully since the rental salesman would mostly oversell the car insurance. In addition, be mindful of the roads in Iceland since there are potholes, absurdly high bumps on even the normal driving roads.
Verified travelerMar 2024
NO turn on red. Be mindful of the car doors, the wind will blow them off.
Verified travelerMay 2024
If interested in car insurance, you better buy it there because Alamo wouldn’t recognize my home policy nor the policy I bought for the car rental before arrival from a third party. .
Verified travelerDec 2023
Roads can be bad in the winter, even just getting to the city, so I recommend booking a solid car like an SUV to be on the safe side
MSept 2023
Driving the country is easy, the speed signs were well regulated, you NEED the parka app for parking because it makes your life super easy and you don’t waste time at sights in the parking lot
ValeriaOct 2023
Driving in Keflavik is very easy. Plan for two full days!
Verified travelerOct 2023
Great roads, easy to grasp
Verified travelerOct 2023
Give yourself plenty of time. Buy the highest insurance as the roads are not all paved, and the weather can be harsh.
Verified travelerJul 2023
If able, rent a automatic transmission instead of manual gear. There are lots of round-above with-in city limit and around the country, so you need to know how to pass them safely. Some of the bridge is a narrow and needs to yield the om-coming cars from the other side. If possible, don't drive on any gravel roads as it may puncture your tires.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Driving is fairly easy if you know how to use a traffic circle and how to drive a manual.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Make sure that you have the number to call when getting to the airport so they know you've arrived. I was nervous about someone showing up to get us to the rental office. Overall it probably took an hour and 15 min.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Adhere to the speed limits. Driving an automatic might be easier than a manual with Having to stop on an incline in some places
Verified travelerJul 2023
Make sure you know which services use the blue shuttle buses outside the arrivals terminal
CarolineAug 2023
Driving is fairly straightforward and easy. Fill up on gas when you have the opportunity.
BethAug 2023
Pay attention to the little camera signs enforcing speed
JinMay 2023
Rent from a bigger well known rental car companies.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Keflavik

  • When coming to the remote town of Keflavik, renting a car is definitely a must; Iceland is a popular destination for road trips and public transport is not well-established in this secluded corner of the world. Get the most out of your island experience and hire your own four wheels upon arrival at Keflavik to explore the stunningly untouched landscape of Iceland. You can also visit Reykjavik, which is about 50 minutes away, and probably even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
  • When landing at Keflavik International Airport, head to the car hire service desks in the arrivals hall and choose from companies like Avis or Hertz, among some others. With a car, the ride to central Reykjanesbaer (which is the municipality made up of Keflavik, Njarovik, and Hafnir) will only take 5 minutes, whereas public transport or walking will take half an hour.
  • Traffic jams are unlikely to be encountered during a trip to Iceland, even though most Icelandic people own a car, as there is little to no public transport available. One of the worst mistakes to commit in Iceland when driving a car is leaving the road and driving into a field or any strip of nature. Fines can be exorbitantly high, as the Icelandic people are very fierce when it comes to protecting the nature of their island, so always stick to the roads that stretch across the entire island and make exploring it an easy and enjoyable undertaking.
  • Iceland is particularly famous for the Northern Lights, but, when driving through the countryside or Keflavik, don’t get distracted by this extraordinary nature spectacle. Many accidents in Iceland happen because tourists stop their car in the middle of the road to take pictures of the scenic pastures or Northern Lights. Especially as long strips of roads are not well-lit, this is a dangerous undertaking that should be avoided. Find a proper parking spot, park the car, and enjoy the phenomenon safely.
  • Small hire cars in Keflavik are around 38% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about hiring a car in Keflavik

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Keflavik?

Travelers who want to explore the more rural parts of the country during their trip to Keflavik should definitely opt for a car with 4-wheel drive, like an SUV or mini truck. If driving mainly in the town or also venturing into Reykjavik, a smaller city car is also sufficient, as it is also cheaper and needs less gas.

  • What’s the speed limit in Keflavik?

All speed limit signs in Iceland are given in km/h. Generally, 50 km/h (31 mph) is permitted in urban areas, 80 km/h (49 mph) on dirt roads, and up to 90 km/h (55 mph) on paved country roads. Even though hardly any road has a speed limit of more than 90 km/h, it is allowed to drive up to 100 km/h (62 mph) if deemed safe. However, the open landscape and empty roads can tempt many to race, which can lead to fines.

  • Where are the best places to park in Keflavik?

Parking is free almost everywhere in Iceland unless there is a meter. Some parking spots in Keflavik have time restrictions, so always check signs in the vicinity to make sure there won’t be a ticket on the windshield when you get back. Many guesthouses and hotels also have parking spots, so check in advance to see if that also applies to your hotel.

  • Which car hire agencies are at Keflavik Intl airport (KEF)?

The only car hire company onsite at Keflavik Intl airport is Fair Car.

  • Which car hire companies will pick you up at Keflavik Intl airport (KEF)?

Car hire companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Keflavik Intl airport to off-airport locations include Europcar, Fair Car, Alamo, Ace and Avis.

  • How can I find car hires near me in Keflavik?

Take a look at our extensive car hire location map to find the best car hire deals near you.

  • How much does a Small car hire cost in Keflavik?

A Small car hire in Keflavik costs R1 036 per day, on average.

A Medium car hire in Keflavik costs R1 145 per day, on average.

The staff are excellent and nice. If there's another chance, I will rent from them again. But I pay again on the insurance. I brought it from Kayak but when I asked them they said there's no insurance included so I purchased the insurance again from them. Maybe they can work better on checking the add-on or insurance we have paid in Kayak.

All went well. Pickup didn't take too long and drop off was also fast. Had a white Duster, which seems to be the most popular car in Iceland. Wish it was a bit bigger (more room for luggage), but gas mileage was fantastic (5 L /100 km) and the engine had good pep.

I thought pick up was speedy and the plus was I was able to get a free up grade to an automatic. I had pre purchased car insurance through what I thought was Kayak like the car rental, but Alamo wouldn’t accept the coverage and had to repurchase car insurance at the airport. My car did have a low tire pressure light come on a few hours after renting. It appeared fine to the eye and since we were staying local, we didn’t return the car to Alamo.

The only thing we didn’t get was someone helping with the car at first. We were just told it was sitting outside ready with the key in it. The first car that was offered had a very bald tyre. We were given another car, which was fine. The staff at the office were lovely, and very helpful. The man who was to shuttle us from the airport was extremely rude. He would only take the driver, leaving us at the airport without any communication to our driver. On returning our car,the staff were very kind. Seems that your shuttle drivers leave A LOT to be desired though. This was our welcome to iceland.

When picking up the vehicle (Mercedes Vito Touring van), it turned out that the International Driver's Permit was not necessary, although it was stated that it was needed online. The pressure to buy the "premium insurance" felt impossible to avoid taking as we felt that we would be liable for just about anything if we didn't take it. The staff member's English was not the greatest so it was also tough to understand the terms clearly. Being tired and apprehensive at the time, we bit the bullet and paid the additional $400+ for peace of mind. The van we were given was in OK shape - windshield wiper on driver's side was broken, back window wiper, was missing, driver's side door would not open or close in the cold weather and would need to be opened and closed from inside only. The space inside was nice and roomy and getting the Wi-Fi was definitely the way to go! The guys that were present at the time of return were super friendly (Polish and Romanian). The return process was extremely quick. The "walk-around check" of the vehicle upon return was done very quickly as well but made me question the need for that premium insurance. No signed-off paperwork was given upon the return either so here's hoping they stick to their word that all was good!

I thought Dollar rent a car did a great job in regards to the experience picking up the car and dropping it off, the only negative that I have for them is that they are not at the airport!! They are about 5 minutes down the road but that was not given in the information from kayak. There's a shuttle that picks you up at the airport and it comes every 15 minutes. But for the day that I arrived it took about a half an hour or more for the shuttle to arrive. So with that said, the car they provided was great. The experience checking in and out was great but it needs to be stated that they are not at the airport.

Passenger van

KAYAK
I booked a “seven person passenger van” through Kayak and when I picked up my vehicle at Europcar there was a small sedan (two front seats, a middle row 3 seats, and 2 pop up seats in the back) leaving us zero room for any luggage. It was a Dancia Jogger and was not acceptable for our group. Fortunately, Europcar had a Landcruiser available but it cost me an additional $700 dollars. It was a bad way to start a vacation we were really looking forward to.

We upgraded the car to a Land Cruiser with diesel engine. The fuel tank wasn’t full at the time of pickup. The the engine had warning message “add AdBlue, engine will not start after 2500 km” , quickly it came down to 400km after just about 500km driving. We first added 4L of AdBlue, but the message didn’t go away and km kept going down. We added another 4L, and the message finally went away. I emailed to the service center. The representative responded fast and promised the reimbursement of the AdBlue. With the email, I was able to get the reimbursement. Not every gas station had AdBlue. Keeping worrying about the engine not going to start is not a good experience. The rental representative promised we had enough AdBlue for the rental period at pickup.

KAYAK
It later turned out that AddCar is no longer operating in Iceland, which was not communicated to us in advance. After numerous emails and phone calls trying to reach them at the airport, we were unable to collect the car and had to take a taxi to our hotel and rent another car the following day. We are therefore requesting a full refund from AddCar for the unused rental, as the service was not available as booked.

The initial car had very worn tires, so they gave us a free upgrade. The pickup of car was a little slow (waited 20 min for them to get to airport and had to deal with car change), but I've had worse with larger on-airport car rentals. Make sure that you have the number to call when getting to the airport so they know you've arrived.

AddCar left us stranded at the airport. We waited for 2 hours until we had to walk out of the airport to search for a car with my 92-year old grandmother. The unresponsive agency ruined our brief visit to Iceland.
