The Covington Houseboat - Saint Paul - Building

9,6 Excellent (69 reviews)
R2 756+
Overview Reviews
Stay the night on the Mississippi River – literally – at the Covington Inn. This houseboat is trimmed stem to stern in mahogany, brass and bronze, extending to guests the elegant comfort once reserved aboard historic work vessels for company executives and VIPs. Windows and portals in the boat's tiered design draw light into each room. Sleeping quarters feature a mix of ingenious built-in cabinets with simple furnishings from the Covington's work era. Salvaged fixtures, nautical antiques and historic art provide tasteful reminders of the river and the inn's past life. Sitting permanently moored within the reflection of downtown St. Paul's towering skyline, The Capitol, museums, theater, fine dining and shopping wait just across the bridge. Offering a place for both a quiet getaway and the city spree, the Covington does it all. Beyond the privacy of the staterooms, the salon provides a comfortable gathering place. Lit with clerestory windows and furnished with fireside couches and window-front tables, the salon offers a great place for breakfasting, letter writing and browsing through the Covington library of historic river and shipping books. Our breakfasts, cooked in the boat's galley, pamper you with just a touch of the gourmet while fueling a full-day's exploration.

Pros: The breakfast was by far the best I've ever had in either a hotel or a bed and breakfast. Liz is the perfect hostess, she took such good care of us! She listened to my husband's old jokes, and even laughed. She made an excellent recommendation for a Mexican meal. She even let us spoil her adorable dog. For dog lovers like us, being able to pet Jay Jay was an added perk.
Cons: The weather was the only thing that wasn't perfect. We had one cold rainy day, but even then it was fun to sit in our cozy room and watch the river.

Pros: Location from the state fair grounds. Modern clean room.
Cons: Staff was indifferent.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast selection was excellent, room was spacious (but loud when chairs were moved).
Cons: There are no room-darkening drapes in room 312, so the security lights at the portico shine brightly into the room all night. The sheer curtains just didn't suffice. The room was clean and well-kept with the exception of a red stain on the carpet at the foot of the bed.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Nice room. Very clean.
Cons: I booked our room from July 19-22nd. Someone on booking.com end messed up and we had to leave on July21st. Not happy with booking.com at all. Tried to call several times could not get a hold of a live person only your auto-mated system. You would put the confirmation number in and pin, still said we don't have your right info. I will not be booking with you anymore.

Cons: See above, also there was no hot tub.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The staff are awesome at this location. They are efficient, friendly, and set a great tone thru the property. The location is very convenient.

Pros: Tara at the front desk was so friendly and accommodating. Very friendly staff. We had an issue where the sheets were dirty on one of the beds. 10,0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was fantastic
Cons: Parking charge
6,7 Good
Pros: The staff were friendly.
Cons: The breakfast was great; however, I felt bad for the families who showed up at 9:00 to find out that breakfast ended at 9:00 a.m. When I checked into the hotel on Saturday afternoon, I was told by the receptionist that breakfast was from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. They need to make customers aware that breakfast on the weekdays only goes until 9:00 a.m. In my opinion, Labor Day is a day off for MOST people and should be considered part of the weekend. Perhaps breakfast should be served until 10:00 not only on weekends but holidays too. When we ate breakfast on Labor Day, we were very disappointed showing up at 8:45 to see that most of the breakfast items were gone and not refilled. Also was very disappointed that several families showed up at 9:00 thinking that breakfast went until 10:00 a.m. Most of the people who showed up at 9:00 a.m. had little children with them. You need to communicate better about that. On another note, I had booked my room online for two nights. I remember reading "No surprises" with the cost at the end, which was $344.00. When I checked out on Monday morning, I was charged for parking for two nights. I was not impressed that customers get charged for parking. The place was nice and clean and I liked the location; but due to lack of communication to the people who stay there and charging for the parking, I, along with my family, will not be staying there again.

Cons: The location is in an industrial park right near the highway. Rooms facing the highway are loud - I got my best sleep between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. when traffic was at a minimum. Otherwise, my sleep was interrupted by loud mufflers, etc.

Pros: Location was great, entrance on to the skywalk was really good. Price for downtown was eeally very reasonable, room was big.
Cons: It is an older hotel in need of some TLC.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location...right at Green Line, within walking distance of restaurants and Saints stadium, Comfy bed and room amenities, Delicious breakfast...hot oatmeal, waffles, fresh fruit
Cons: Musty smell in lobby area, room not well dusted
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful hotel. Loved the rooms staff was friendly.
7,9 Good
Pros: The bed was comfortable, and the room was a great size and very cute.
Cons: Shower water pressure was terrible, the breakfast was ver minimal, and I've had better breakfasts at 2 star motels.
4,2 Okay
Pros: Beautiful property. Good downtown location.
Cons: The 2 bed suite we booked was actually 2 beds in one room with 2 separate bathrooms. We thought it was going to bed beds in separate rooms. Borderline deceptive. Also used shampoo bottles not replaced with new ones. Dirty women’s underwear left in a drawer. Refrigerator needed defrosting, full of built up ice on top shelf. Breakfast was skimpy. Coffee was warm not hot. And nothing filled while we were eating. Luckily there was coffee in our room but only 1 regular k-cup and 3 decaf k-cups.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The architecture and stone work in the the lobby is beautiful. The hotel has an old world elegance and charm. Our room (King Standard) was lovely with hardwood floors, a butlers pantry with a sink, coffee maker, and toaster. There was also a microwave and refrigerator in the room. The bathroom was a surprise - fully tiled with double pedestal sinks, a private toilet room, fully tiled shower with 3 sprays, and a stem shower. We were told that all of the rooms are a little different so they don’t advertise the specific amenities. Who knows what the other rooms have...
Cons: It was a little dark in both the lobby and the room - without the large glass and views that newer hotels have. The view from our room was of an interior light well. Not a big deal as we weren’t in our room much, and I’m sure there are rooms with better views.
4,0 Okay
Pros: The shower was hot and strong. The exercise facility was decent
Cons: It was generally old & musty. The elevator smelled like an old closet. The room was tiny, barely larger than a walk in closet .

Cons: Area seemed unsafe. I made a trip through the skywalk by myself and was propositioned by a man loitering there. Scary. Breakfast was horrible. Out of everything.
7,5 Good
Pros: The hotel was OK. It seems it was a grand hotel at some point, but is a little tired now. Breakfast was also OK. No hot dishes except a waffle maker. Bathrooms were OK. The room was large and the beds were comfortable. The good news is that Starbucks is a block and a half away. The St. Paul hotel is about 2 blocks away. Not sure I'd return.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: I liked the historic character, but the room was really not updated, esp the bathroom. Only one chair in both rooms. The staff were universally helpful, even helping me learn to use LYFT and problems with the computer and airline check in. Breakfasts were fine. The gym was amazing, but no one there to help with equipment which I did not know how to use.
Cons: Bath esp the shower, more chairs, placement of TV, otherwise ok
8,3 Excellent
Pros: We went to a concert at the Xcel so the location is what drew us to this hotel. It is definitely a different hotel experience, feeling older and not modern like new hotels. Small room but it’s cute for couples!
Cons: Our room seemed a little dusty which doesn’t really big me that much. It is hard to get ready in the bathroom as there is no shelf or counter by the mirror so that was kind of frustrating. We had a standard king room and it felt like a queen bed. It’s a small space for $150 a night but I get it’s in the cities.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous building and attention to historical past! What a wonderful hotel. Thank you!!
Cons: Parking fees

Pros: Wasn't included
Cons: Room only had 1 coffee cup. 2 people stayed.
5,0 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: The bed was very uncomfortable. You need better mattresses. The mattress is the most important thing since the only real point of a hotel is somewhere to sleep. I didn't rest well because of the uncomfortable mattress.
7,5 Good
Pros: I like the shuttle to the state fair
Cons: Restaurants will not deliver here you have to use grub hub not sure why but I think it is because of the restaurant onsite. And that restaurant is way over priced for it's limited menu
8,0 Excellent
Cons: The Starbucks store is operated by the same staff members who check customers in and out of the hotel and so there is a considerable wait time to get a cup of coffee.
6,5 Good
Cons: Getting into the bed was nearly impossible. Way to high for a short and/or disabled person to get into easily
7,9 Good
Cons: The last three times I've stayed there, the water at the sink has been lukewarm at best
8,5 Excellent
Pros: Very clean & quiet. Looks like it was recently updated. Check in staff was very friendly & helpful.
Cons: The bed was terrible. Every time my husband got up I went down about a foot. Every time he got back into bed I went up about a foot. Felt like it was some kind of air blatter
8,0 Excellent
Pros: The price.
Cons: Room a bit small.
6,7 Good
Pros: Nice pool area, clean rooms.
Cons: - Received very poor customer service from a supervisor/manager type - condescending, glib attitude. - Toilet flush did not work.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: It was an easy place to find. There was plenty of parking. It was quiet and I didn't hear anyone else.
Cons: I ordered room service breakfast by filling out the card and hanging it on the door as directed. At the time we expected food we sat waiting until I finally told my son just to go shower and get ready for the day. It never came and I found the card still on the door. We ended up going to the event without eating and I didn't get a shower because we planned our time counting on the room service. I lady at the desk apologized and said she will look into it. I shouldn't have waited so long for the food.

Pros: Location
Cons: Bar/dining atmosphere was too under stated

Pros: Shuttle diver and one front desk member went above and beyond. Building , room and public areas were very tied and marginally clean. Lobby was very cold and lacking. Using Lyft was difficult because the main entrance was hidden and unmarked; they dropped you off where the door to the restaurant was with steps when you had baggage. And they didn’t know where to pick you up The worst thing was I am a Hilton Honors member and I had no idea I would not receive my points when booking through you! I had another reservation with you on two weeks in Phoenix and I have now canceled that and booked directly( for the same price( even slightly cheaper) and will get my points. The hotel is not named on the outside of the building and was hard to find when walking the city
Cons: Soo much Refer above

Pros: The room next door was very loud late the night of my first stay. I hate complaining, but I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep. So I went to the front desk to let them know, and I asked if I could move into a different room. The staff person was very kind. She called the people and told them there was a noise complaint, and she found a different room for me. I had no more troubles at all, and I slept well. Very pleasant staff and comfortable, clean room.

Cons: The smell and cleanliness was TERRIBLE. The room smelled of cleaning spray trying to cover the weed smell. We had to go to the store to buy a candle. It didn’t help. The shower had someone else’s hair in it and something that looked like mold on the ceiling. Cops were circling the parking lot, I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing. It made me feel a little safer but at the same time, I feel like it’s a norm with the ppl that stay here. I would NOT recommend this if you have a family or you’re staying alone. Spend a little more for a different place.
4,2 Okay
Cons: My non-smoking room was extremely smoky. I was switched to another room that was just as bad. My nose and eyes burned from the smell. I had to leave but the front desk staff was helpful.
4,6 Okay
Pros: The location was great. The front desk worker was very nice. The outdoor pool was awesome.
Cons: Was a little upset when I asked housekeeping to take the blankets on top of the beds so they could get washed and was told that they "dont take those". And also was upset that the outdoor pool was closed at 9:30pm in the summertime. And no microwaves in the rooms or in the office.
