Headlands Inn Bed & Breakfast - Mendocino - Outdoor view

Located in Mendocino, Headlands Inn Bed & Breakfast is by the ocean, within a 15-minute walk of Mendocino Art Center and Agate Beach. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The setting, location, the property, interior furnishings and the breakfast were the highlights of the visit.
Cons: Windows and the blinds may require a little work.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful breakfast served right to your room. Very friendly staff and a great location to walk around a picturesque town. Well maintained facility very welcoming to guests.
Cons: nothing
9,0 Excellent
Pros: This was our first time staying at a real bed and breakfast and it did not disappoint. We had Annie's room with its own bathroom which was great and the bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was delicious (french toast casserole of some kind) and we had to leave early the next morning before regular check out time, so they packed us breakfast to-go.
Cons: Obviously you are sharing a whole house with lots of other guests so you can hear them sometimes, not a bad thing, just something to keep in mind. Additionally, when we stayed, the wildfires caused a mandatory power shutdown in Mendocino (thankfully the wedding we attended had backup generators at their location) so when we came back to our B&B, the power was out, and we were unable to use any water to wash, shower or flush because they have an electrical water pump. The staff kindly provided us a battery powered lamp and a gallon of water so we were able to use those in the meantime. Not ideal but we were able to make do.
6,5 Good
Pros: Their breakfast was superior.
Cons: The room was filled with uncomfortable charm. There was Wi-Fi but no TV, not mentioned in their advertising.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We enjoyed everything during our brief stay - excellent location, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable accommodations, and especially the fine dining breakfast delivered to our door, complete with fresh flowers and a newspaper. We enthusiastically recommend this B&B!
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Impeccably clean, beautifully appointed, wonderful location.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The Headlands is located in the centre of this gorgeous village and easy walking distance to shops, restaurants and the Headlands trail. The house is very pretty with an interesting history. The room was clean and comfortable, the bathroom was fine, with lovely towels and toiletries. There was a small bottle of wine in our room on arrival and fresh flowers. Hot drinks and biscuits are available every day 4.30-7.00pm and cold drinks all the time. A breakfast tray is delivered to the room every morning at 8.45 (left outside the door). This consists of tea or coffee, juice and hot dishes, fruit etc. There is a communal parlour where guests can read, make drinks, and chat.
Cons: We would have preferred a hot drinks facility in the room (coffee maker or kettle) and a fridge. The only fridge was a shared one. We like to make coffee early in the morning. It is obvious that a great deal of trouble is taken to provide a good experience for guests. The breakfast tray was beautifully presented. I’m sure this “gourmet” style is appreciated by many guests. We would have preferred a more simple menu and a more flexible breakfast time. The dishes looked lovely, but they were quite complicated and not really to our taste. For example a spiced soufflé in a tortilla case ? A bit much for that time in the morning. Perhaps a simpler breakfast choice might be better ? Just our opinion of course.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: A beautiful traditional building. Very comfortable, clean and well positioned for the town. So homely. First class breakfast.
7,5 Good
Pros: This B&B is in a perfect location at the southeast end of town, so you can walk to anywhere. Staff was great. Our room was small so it was a bit tight and we'd probably upgrade to a larger room next time since breakfast is served in your room
Cons: The flies!!! At all times there were several flies in our room and/or bathroom. Also - in our small room, having breakfast there was a bit tight. You can get tea and/or coffee at 8 am but breakfast not served until 8:45-9 am. We were always up and then waiting around for first tea and then breakfast.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: This was our second visit. We had been looking forward to the Million Dollar Bacon. I, unfortunately, had to give mine to my husband as I couldn't eat it as it was way too spicy for my indigestion. I don't know if it just had too much pepper or what you did to the bacon but my stomach just won't tolerate anything but bland so maybe that's on me. But even he said it wasn't what he remembered, not quite as good. Sorry! But we liked the room. Last minute reservation so we were lucky to get it. Was too cool for me to walk around but my husband did and enjoyed it very much. I love the fire in the main lobby.
Cons: As I said above, bacon could have been less, or not at all spicy. You could tell visitors about heat/spice level of food to save waste and allow them to choose well for their needs. As for the rest, grounds and rooms are beautiful, clean, wonderful amenities and I'm sure we'll we back.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The food was outstanding, and the room includes both breakfast AND dinner. There's 24-hour beverage service, as well, so you can get a cup of coffee or tea or cocoa whenever you want it. The view of the bay, out our window, was also stunning. It's a great place for bird-watching, and I enjoyed wandering the grounds.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Complimentary wine tasting every early evening
Cons: Dinner only served from 5.30 - 6.30.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The location was great overlooking the bay. The food was outstanding, it was unique and tasty. It was almost like staying at your own house but with a better cook. It has DVD's so you don't need to rely on network for Netflix
Cons: The main issue was the lack of AC, normally this wouldn't be a issue based on it's location. But with heat waves becoming more of the norm they need to figure out something better than a fan. During the day the room was really uncomfortable, it really did cool down until evening
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The fire pit. It was great sitting around the fire at night with the other guests. The breakfasts and light dinner were perfect.
Cons: Nothing. We enjoyed everything.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast and food in general was fantastic! Much better than the typical "included breakfast" at most hotels. The service was excellent and the staff was helpful and personable. It was definitely a laid-back and comfortable place to relax, with a nice view.
Cons: So let me start with saying that we walked away from our stay VERY HAPPY and would definitely recommend this place in a heartbeat. My initial first impression when we arrived however was a little underwhelmed, but only b/c we were expecting that it was ON the ocean based on photos (maybe the angles, etc). I thought we would be able to walk from the back porch area right down to the water, but it's actually on the other side of Highway 1 and while there is still a beautiful view of the ocean and sunset, you do hear cars, etc. In the end, it really didn't matter. As we discovered, pretty much any place that is directly on the water appears to be privately owned homes. I ONLY mention this in case you are expecting "ocean front" upon your arrival. The rest of the grounds, service, food, and fire pit all more than made up for this misunderstanding. It's a really easy short drive to Mendocino Village if that is what you are looking for as well.

Pros: The Mac House (MacCallum House) is a wonderful, romantic, luxurious place to stay. Breakfasts there are the best in Mendocino. The rooms were well appointed and the stuff helpful and friendly. I highly recommend the Mac House.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Historic and perfect setting for enjoying an authentic Mendocino experience.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: The restaurant was outstanding. We arrived on a rainy afternoon and the bar & Restaurant were so welcoming!
Cons: Our room was right over the bar, so it was a little noisy, but everything quieted down about 10.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We liked EVERYTHIING! Our two-nights' stay was like experiencing heaven on earth. Everything was exceptional and we were able to relax and have a true vacation. It was wonderful.
Cons: We just wish now that we could have stayed longer.

9,6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent breakfast and very welcoming personal
8,5 Excellent
Pros: Overall a good experience. The place was clean and the lady doing our check in was a world of help for the area. Secluded and off the beaten track, but the entire town is within walking distance. The place where we ate was only a couple of blocks away and was one of the best fish and chips I've ever had.
Cons: I find it a little distasteful to find thick paint on everything. You wouldn't paint your house this thick so why would you do it to a house from 1905?
6,6 Good
Pros: Location and service from the check in staff.
Cons: Toilet in my room was a little cramped for space.
7,9 Good
Pros: Great host, great location, great breakfast. We weren’t in the room long so it was fine and comfy. Shower not so great but the town is on a well so I’m sure that is why
Cons: Just not that great of shower.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Jesica was a joy to be around and she was always willing to help with any of our needs. She makes you feel like family.
Cons: The WiFi is unsecured, so I would never use it
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We went with our 2 year old toddler for a family getaway and stayed in the Queen suite. The living room with the kitchen had a sofa that we used as a bed for our child. The rooms were well heated (we just had to switch it on in the bedroom when we arrived at 9pm). Breakfast was delicious and Jessica who cooked and served us had both cooked and cold options everyday. Perfect location for a stroll around and a very short walk to the beach, where the river meets the ocean! Will definitely go back.
Cons: The room was not made on the one whole day that we had there, we would have appreciated some fresh towels.
6,7 Good
Pros: Breakfast was great!
Cons: Needs to be redone. Wall paper is taped in places. Towels were stained, as were old bathrobes. Feather bed was not feathery... it was uneven. The green towels were stained. When my husband tried to use the restroom, he had to duck....

6,8 Good
Pros: Location- walking distance to Mendocino. The staff was nice.
Cons: The beds were bad and the wi-fi was terrible.
6,0 Good
Pros: The charm of this "hotel" makes it worth staying. Its in a great place, only a few walking steps from everything.
Cons: There is no Air Conditioning or Fans. It was very hot and had a difficult time sleeping. I understand ACs are not the norm by the coast, but they need something.
7,0 Good
Pros: Room was nice & spacious
Cons: Hot water was not working when we tried to use it on the morning. The problem was fixed quickly though
6,0 Good
Pros: Good location
Cons: facilities and cleanliness to be improved
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable relaxing atmosphere.
7,5 Good
Pros: Due to cut off of power because of fire in Northern California, we has to sleep in the Mendocino Hotel without power, electrical light or wifi. It was very nice though.
Cons: /
7,9 Good
Pros: The property is on the outskirts of town but quite clean and comfortable. It would be ideal for groups such as weddings etc
Cons: The breakfast was somewhat limited as was the interest that the staff took of their guests
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Room was clean, spacious, and the hotel was walking distance to town. Plenty of free parking.
Cons: It would be nice to have a restaurant on-site, or breakfast. No real complaints other than you have me linked to another guest in your records. I'm not from Norwalk CT. Very nice hotel when staying in Mendocino.
7,1 Good
Cons: Some stuffy smell in the room.
5,0 Okay
Pros: Room and bed was fine Breakfst was really bad
5,0 Okay
Cons: Coffee pot was not cleaned every day. Arrived back at hotel to find my door open with the cleaners key left in the lock...... no cleaner to be found!
5,8 Okay
Pros: The location , it was only 5 minute walk from the town
Cons: It was very dated in appearance , furnishings and furniture were worn and shabby . The whole place seemed that it had seen better times . The bedroom although clean and tidy was over powered by the smell of bleach that lingered all night . The receptionist staff seemed disinterested in their guests . Breakfast was included in the rate but this consisted of a poor selection of pastries / plain cereals with milk and yogurts in a mini fridge. We ate off disposable paper plates with plastic cutlery and were reminded to clean our tables after eating

8,0 Excellent
Cons: paper thin walls
7,0 Good
Pros: Great location. Hotel had historic charm. It is definitely a place where you go for the experience and not for comfort.
Cons: Very squeaky beds, you can cough or roll over without making a huge racket.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Nice view, lots of wild blackberries across the road. Very close to a great market which was a lifesaver since there was no electricity at the motel due to the fire.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The staff was outstanding--friendly, cheerful, helpful. Right in town and across the street from trails through oceanfront headlands. We spent lots of time hanging out in the Victorian lobby with beautiful views of the ocean.
Cons: Cleaning was mediocre. Hall carpets needed vacuuming as did under the bed.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: A terrific location and cute decor. Phenomenal night sky!
Cons: For 6 feet or taller, the bed may be slightly short.
8,2 Excellent
Pros: Excellent Location on Main Street and close to Ocean. No TV, but great period decor throughout. Great food and service. Plenty to do for couple of days without driving anywhere. Definitely worth a visit!!
Cons: The mattress (room 7) was terrible...maybe as old as the hotel itself. This was such a negative; almost ruined the trip for us. Told front desk person, but she never made a note of my comment or apologized.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The room was big, but the closet was small, with no hooks or drawers. The bathroom was clean and easy to use.
Cons: The wardrobe housing the TV was pretty, but the doors made it difficult to see the TV from various angles (the bed or one of the two chairs).
5,8 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: The bed was too small and uncomfortable
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Walking into the hotel felt like walking into a country hotel retreat - so so cosy. Staff were really delightful and helpful. Food in the restaurant was delicious and good value. And the location - Mendocino is beautiful!
9,6 Excellent
Pros: This hotel is straight out of an old Western movie. The only thing missing is the honky tonk piano and the dancing girls. Beautifully restored, helpful friendly staff. A truly enjoyable experience complete with a wood fire in the sitting room.
Cons: Town closes early but that seems to be all the towns around in the fall.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Charming!
Cons: Small room, really small

7,5 Good
Pros: Staff was very friendly. Breakfast was delicious.
Cons: Fireplace was not working when we arrived. I think whenever there is a problem in a room, it should be out of service. There was also water and power outage when we stayed due to the wildfire emergency. However the inn was not prepared for this emergency so there was no water nor electricity in our room. I wish they had a generator for such situations.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Old Victorian, close to downtown, beach etc. Breakfast was wonderful. Loved woodstove in room.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent breakfast and very nice hosts. The Inn is perfectly positioned in Main Street, it was easy to walk to the river, beach and the town. We had an extremely comfortable bed.
Cons: The Inn certainly could do with a lick of paint in places.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Despite the power outage due to the wild fires, this Inn was very comfortable, save and warm. We loved having the fireplace (no power), so the atmosphere was lovely. Landlords gave us extra water for toiletry purposes. Great location for walking to vista points, great shops and eateries.
Cons: A couple of buckets of water to allow us to flush the toilet would have have been great. Candles that worked would have been good.
6,0 Good
Pros: Staff was wonderful and the breakfast was special.
Cons: The owners of this historic building should be ashamed of themselves for the physical condition of the rooms and building. Beds were comfortable but couches, chairs etc were pitiful.
4,5 Okay
Pros: Close to downtown
Cons: Bed was very uncomfortable. The room was in need of repainting/repapering. The breakfast was about as good as Denny's. The eating location was tight, and breakfast was late. The innkeeper tried to make the most of what she had to work with, but the place is quite "long in the tooth", as it were.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Quirky little place. Kinda creepy actually. Great location in a lovely little town. Lovely hosts who make a mean breakfast!!
Cons: Noisy guests above us but no fault of anyone’s.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Cute and comfortable B&B kinda hotel.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Food was creative and very good. House was very charming and grounds were lovely.
Cons: No closet, no outside light switch to bathroom, only one little bar of soap for both sink and shower.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Great owner. Nice location. Quiet
5,0 Okay
Pros: It was close to the place I was visiting with friends and family.
Cons: I understand they had no control with the power outage. They didn’t have a generator which it could have made the stay more comfortable. Other places had generators, you could hear the humming. No shower, no heat. We got 2 bottles of water, 4 wooden matches and 2 tea lights. How do you start a fire with 4 matches? We used 2 matches to light the tea lights. The bed linen was thin and pillows flat! No extra blankets. We wore are clothes to bed, hoping to be warmer. My boyfriend got coffee in the morning but when I went to get some there was no more mugs available. I guess they didn’t know how many guests would want it. I still had to pay full price! Very disappointing experience!
9,0 Excellent
Pros: The Inn is in very old house, very funky and interesting, big room with high ceiling. Room had Jacuzzi (which I didn't use). Nice grounds outside. Great staff, full of information. In good location, walking distance to several restaurants.
Cons: Not really. I wish I could have stayed longer and not just one night.
