Hotel location in the exclusive wooded area was good with nice grounds and free parking. Our room 120 was a de luxe room and had sufficient space. The on site restaurant was used twice and was OK. We had breakfast served in our room every day. It was adequate. We did not use the pool. The staff were very friendly and attentive but the housekeeping refurbishments were poor and things were not refilled/replaced daily.
The hotel is very overdue for refurbishment and it will soon be outclassed by the refurbishment work taking place soon at the Westminster Hotel. The hotel's layout is very odd with a huge stone staircase up to the first floor (no handrails) and then another one down to the ground floor (no handrails) just a short way along that you need to use to get to the breakfast room making it difficult to access for anyone with walking difficulty so we chose not go there. Our room 120 was showing its age with stains on the carpet, peeling wallpaper and damaged woodwork. The room has bare walls apart from the TV and was rather depressing with dark wallpaper. The bathroom had a very high fitted bath and we had to ask for a portable step to be supplied to be able to get into the bath/shower. We asked for a different room but were told that all the rooms were the same. The air conditioning system was primitive with only an on/off switch so it was not possible to change the setting to our preference. The storage shelving inside the wardrobe was poorly arranged and afforded little storage space and one long shelf at the top was unusable due to the height and wall above the sliding doors. I had to re-arrange the shelving in order to unpack our clothes. There were no coat hooks in the entrance so wet coats had to be hung in the bathroom. The minibar was badly stocked and had little of what one expected to find in a four star hotel establishment. The plats du jour in the restaurant were the same each day and should have been called plats du semaine or plats du mois! are were the rest of the dishes during our 5 night stay.
Breakfast was wide ranging, cereals, continental, English. Even had pancakes and waffles but the hotplate they had wasnt working so these were cold. The only (minor) negative.
A small gym to accompany the excellent swimming pool would have been nice. Too far of a walk to the centre for a long stay (we're in our 70s so that may not apply to most clients)
We have a dog the position of the hotel was perfect
the bed was comfortable, the reception staff very helpful. Liked the toilet being separate from the bathroom. Was quite cold at night, could not find the radiator. blind open on a side, when the room looks out on the street , ( even if quiet st) , it would be better if the blinds were opening from the middle.
The carpet was very uncomfortable , you can tell no underlying was put before the carpet, it was just concrete floor then the carpet. Not what I am expecting when you pay £150.00 :(( Really after a long day driving, all you need is a nice cuppa but we had to play short straw to see who was going to have it there was just enough tea/ coffee, milk & sugar for one person. Most people put 2/3 milk in their tea as for sugar 2. Even if you can request more from reception, when you just arrived, you just want to have a rest, not fluff around to call & wait for things o be dropped off. Also the dispenser in the shower were empty, had to ask for more mini gels. Bath far too high, borderline dangerous.
Clean and spacious. Lovely pool
It was all hood
