I did not have a positive experience. When I checked in at the counter, I was forced to purchase auto insurance even though I already had it. They said it was not good in Tulum, but it is the same insurance I've used in Cancun and Cozumel. When I went to pick up the small SUV, it was very beat up. Dings, paint scratches, rusted windshield wipers, and torn blades were everywhere. When I asked for another vehicle, they said they were all taken. They found another vehicle which unfortunately was as equal or worse conditions. They did not care much about the cars, and when I finally got in, the fuel was low; keep in mind the airport is in the middle of nowhere; luckily, I made it to a gas station as they won't give you the car full of fuel.

Car was not ready, had to wait till it was cleaned. Car wash quality was horrible. Car itself was beaten up from all sizes, it was hard to follow all cracks and scratches. Have no complains for staff in the airport tho. Was very helpful and understanding.

You should advertise how much is the amount you freeze on people’s credit card in order to trick/scam them into either take YOUR insurance or to keep the rental payment incase we don’t want to stay with your rental service due to the lack of information provided ahead. I mean we know that’s your tactic but it very sneaky and unprofessional and nope not recommending your company. How is it normal that if we take the insurance through Kayak you still force people to give a credit card deposit of 13k USD , wth is that. And kayak too should let their customers know what to expect once at destination. Definitely not going through you next time and will go to the others who are more straight forward.

I recently rented a car from Europcar in Tulum, and unfortunately, my experience was marred by a significant lack of transparency regarding fees. Initially, I was attracted by their seemingly competitive rates, but my enthusiasm quickly waned upon discovering the slew of undisclosed charges. First and foremost, there was a $1400 deposit which caught me by surprise. While I understand the necessity of a deposit, such a hefty amount was not communicated upfront, leaving me feeling financially blindsided. Additionally, what added insult to injury were the numerous hidden fees that surfaced during the rental process. From insurance surcharges to additional gas costs, it felt like I was constantly being nickel-and-dimed without any prior warning. It's disheartening when a company fails to be transparent about the total cost of their services, as it erodes trust and leaves customers feeling deceived. Overall, my experience with Euro Car Rental left much to be desired. While the car itself was fine, the lack of upfront disclosure regarding fees and the hefty deposit requirement tarnished what could have been a positive rental experience. I would caution others to thoroughly scrutinize the fine print before committing to a rental with Euro Car Rental to avoid similar disappointment especially when booking through Expedia.

Pick up took ages… When the contract was finally signed, after having to pay a massive insurance surplus for a limited coverage, the personnel did not find the assigned car. We had to wait at least half an hour at the parking lot until the personnel showed up with the car. Once the car was found, it turned out the car was still dirty and thus not ready for delivery. Another long wait for the car to be washed. We finally took possession, but had to ask the personnel to do some additional cleaning in the copilot’s place, as it was still dirty. Whilst I had agreed to a partially filled tank, after driving just a few miles, the indication jumped to a lower level, not really reflecting the gas tank level I had agreed to. The water tank for washing the windshield was empty, which we noticed only later. Due to rain and dirty roads we had to fill it at a gas station… Drop-off in Mérida was efficient. Car worked well.

They did not honor the agreement with kayak. After several schemey attempts to sell/more force me to purchase additional insurance coverages. I told the manager issac on duty that I had confirmed with mexrentacar, via the email listed on their website, that my pre paid coverage already had the required third party liability, and that any other insurance coverage offered would be OPTIONAL. Isaac would not back down and kept pushing that i purchase the additional insurance coverage or else he could not provide the vehicle. Isaac then said my credit card had to be a year or older to be able to proceed with my pre paid agreement. Isaac said I could purchase the additional insurance and they would be able to proceed with the same credit card, waiving the baloney 1-year requirement. Isaac then said if I don’t pay the additional insurance. I would lose the money spent on the pre paid agreement through kayak. The worst way to start your vacation, skip this company at all cost. Gracias.

Terrible. I didn’t get the car. I had to rent a new one from Hertz. At the Mexrentacar they asked me for 2500.00 US dollars as deposit which I agreed having no choice since I was traveling with my kids (2yo and 7 yo). At first they kept me waiting at the counter for 3 hours stating they were unable to find my booking despite providing them all the booking numbers, CC info. Later they asked for 2500.00( two thousand five hundred dollars deposit) which was very strange, when I agreed paying it with my Credit card they said my credit card doesn’t work call u r bank. I called my bank they said no transaction of 2500.00 was made. I mean they said my card didn’t work without using it. Just couldn’t refuse the rental car they gave me tough time and no car. I had to go rent from Hertz even I had already paid to Mexrentacar in advance. NO rental car , No refund. Guys stay away from Mexrentacar a car and go for US rental car companies don’t fall prey to their scam.

They wouldn’t give me the car without insurance the guy was extremely rude and basically said that if anything happens to the car I’m going extorted for huge amounts of money and shouldn’t take it he wouldn’t look at me at all. And told me I won’t get my money back at all. Never use this place if you are travelling in Mexico as a tourist and don’t speak Spanish, because they will rip you off and steal your money.

This rental car is a scam. I booked the car through Kayak to travel from Tulum and drop off at Cancun airport. I paid a premium cost on Kayak. The Tulum airport is new and pretty but the rental car situation/ area is very poorly managed and planned. Rental process took over 90 mins and return process took over an hour. Very disappointing and frustrating!

There is no Dollar agency in Tulum. It is Hertz. Took us one hour visiting car rental agencies to find out Dollar is part of Hertz. When we got there our reservation was not in their system. Told us to call Kayak. We had to call a Hertz high level manager to help us and after 3 hours got a noisy, dirty mini van in another agency. Lucky for us we knew someone at Hertz. Very long wait, couldn’t find my reservation, and once they found it they tried to charge me almost double the price of the rental for the insurance. The basic and standard insurance (couldn’t explain the difference between the two) was simply for loss or theft, so only option was premium. I left without renting the car. :((

Pros:

Economy Rent a Car is a complete scam. 1. The company where you are supposed to pick the car up isn't called Economy Rent A Car, it's called America Car Rental. 2. They address and name of the location sent in the confirmation email were both wrong. After walking for 45 minutes, I was finally able to reach someone on the phone who told me where I was supposed to go. 3. When I arrived at the America Car Rental company, I was told that they didn't have any cars to rent even though I had a confirmed reservation that was paid. 4. Without contacting anyone, I received an email stating that someone of what I paid had been refunded but not all. 5. I repeatedly questioned why I wasn't being refunded in full and was told via email that this wasn't their policy and that the balance wasn't refundable.

Cons:

This company is a SCAM, AVOID. They will take your money and not give you a rental car.

They had no car when we arrived. They said that Kayak should have told me it was canceled. Thankfully, they were within walking distance of rental car companies with cars available. But, of course, the price was considerably higher.

Hidden fees. I was forced to purchase their insurance which costed more than the fees for the car itself even though I had my personal insurance and credit card protection insurance. Car was old and bumped up everywhere. Would not rent there again.

Be careful. They will rent your booked and paid car to someone else and have you borrow a completely different car. We booked a minivan and they brought a small SUV. They insisted that our reservation is this type of car. Ummm nope!
