KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Mountain View

  • Mountain View may be in the heart of Silicon Valley, but there is more to the city than just the tech industry. About 30 miles to the southwest of the city lie the Santa Cruz Mountains, where visitors can spend the day kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking. At the northern border of the city is the San Francisco Bay where beachgoers can enjoy the Shoreline Lake Park or a walk along the Stevens Creek Pathway, which extends from the bay into the Cuernavaca neighborhood. Other city attractions include the Computer History Museum and the downtown shopping and dining area.
  • To get from the arrival terminals at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to the rental car center, simply follow the signs to the nearest AirTrain Blue Line stop and board the free shuttle train for the 5 to 7min ride to the car rental offices located at 780 N McDonnell Road. The AirTrain operates 24/7 and departs from each stop as frequently as once every 4min. There is an AirTrain Blue Line stop at every terminal.
  • Because of the city’s robust pedestrian and bicycle safety plan, drivers, walkers, and bikers can safely use the transportation network together. However, there are some particularly busy intersections that can be confusing for drivers, so use caution in these areas. Some intersections that are especially troublesome include Grant Rd & El Camino Real, West Middlefield Rd & Highway 237, and Central Expressway & Rengstorff Ave.
  • The morning rush hour throughout the San Francisco Bay area, including Mountain View, can last from around 6am to 10am. In the evening, you’ll find congested roadways from around 3pm to 7pm. Highway 101 is particularly notorious for having heavy traffic during rush hour, as it is a main route connecting the major cities in the Bay area. If you plan to visit San Francisco, San Jose or another nearby city during your stay, you would be well-served to try to schedule around the traffic no matter what route you plan to travel.
  • Medium hire cars in Mountain View are around 52% cheaper than other car types, on average

The email confirmation took me to an old address which is now a hertz. Thankfully a hertz worker was there while they were closed to directed me to the correct address almost a mile away. I had to walk there in unideal weather. Then the car I reserved was not available. I was also charged for a car seat which I did not use and was not provided to me.
