Malhadinha Nova Country House & Spa - Beja - Building
1
9,4 Excellent (215 reviews)
R5 182+
Overview Reviews
We’d come to Herdade da Malhadinha Nova for its stellar chef. And working winery. And golden Alentejo scenery. Oh, and the glittering infinity pool, set in green, green gardens. Did we mention the spoil-you-rotten spa?
9,3 Excellent
Pros: The dinner in the restaurant was excellent. Staff were very friendly.
Cons: Not much to dislike - a light was broken in our room. That’s about it.
9,5 Excellent
Pros: View and wines
Cons: No
9,5 Excellent
Pros: Extremely attentive service from knowledgeable staff. Secluded and peaceful location resulted in a totally regenerative break away.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic place!! One of the most enjoyable hotels to stay at.. just looking at the amazing view or dining in their top restaurant!! Food is fantastic, wines are fantastic.. I stay whenever I am up in Alentejo! :-)

10,0 Excellent
Pros: It is the perfect hideaway. Everything is well designed, well thought through, the staff are divine, the views are incredible. It has a calm, creative energy about it which we find addictive. The restaurant is amazing, the wines superb. Can’t think of any more superlatives! Go. You won’t be disappointed.
Cons: It was all just perfect.
9,5 Excellent
Pros: It is an astonishing place. Everything is wonderful. It is a quiet place perfect to disconnect. The breakfast is very complete, lunch at the swimming pool nice and the diner at the gastronomic restaurant very good. The home made wine excellent. The staff is extremely nice and professional.
Cons: Our room was a bit noisy and our bed a bit soft.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The guest house is set in a beautiful, serene setting- rolling vineyards, with horses, cattle, storks and peacocks! The rooms and common areas are well designed and beautifully appointed. The house and rooms are filled with fresh flowers and candles. Breakfast was gorgeously displayed and delicious. Most of the staff was extremely courteous and responsive. One negative was that we were told (in an email prior to our arrival) that we could do the vineyard tour prior to dinner, but upon arrival was informed that we could do it only the next day (right before our departure- which was not ideal for us). Take the vineyard tour (included in your stay)- it was very interesting and the tour guides were pleasant. Delicious wine.
Cons: Our rooms were right off of the main common area and our window opened 2 feet off of the outdoor breakfast tables- so there was some impingement on our privacy. Also, although the hotel is small (10 rooms)- the noise level can be high depending on who your fellow guests are. There was a large loud group using the common area next to our room, partying until past 1 pm (even though we asked the hotel manager at 12:30 to control the noise).
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Location is outstanding. Food and wine is excellent. Staff are friendly and obliging
Cons: No complaints
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Heaven on earth: Amazing from A-Z - nothing to complain.

The Pousada de Beja is truly an oasis at the heart of the Alentejo plains, steeped in almost 800 years of history. Come and experience these secular memories in an authentic haven on the Alentejo plains.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice rooms and a great location in the historical centre. A good breakfast and free parking were also included.
7,5 Good
Pros: We loved the way the old has been combined with the new. The architecture is just lovely and the furnishings are tasteful. Plenty of restaurants nearby. Comfortable beds.
Cons: We were supposed to have a bar fridge in our room. Only on mentioning this when we checked out were we told that the fridge had gone for maintenance. The coffee served at breakfast was not good. Time for this 4 star hotel to invest in a good espresso machine. The entrance to the hotel could be kept neater - lots of weeds that could easily be pulled out.
4,5 Okay
Cons: The bed was very, very firm causing back pain in the morning. The bar turned out to be the snooker room and no physical bar. An internal call had to be made and the call's recipient had to call another who in turn came to the room to ask what drink was required and then walk away to find the drink. A very slow process. Signage was poor.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was good. Our room. was beautiful.
Cons: There could have been more loungers around the pool, also some surveillance about people leaving their towels on the loungers all day without being there.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Great pool, ideal location for exploring Beja or stopping over, amazing historic building (former Franciscan convent) - sympathetic conversion but extremely comfortable - nice staff, decent breakfast, good value.
Cons: All good.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. Good value for money.
Cons: Nothing
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We were very pleased with the whole aspect of the convent. The room was satisfactory, the bed was comfortable, breakfast was good, the front desk staff were extremely helpful. The grounds are lovely especially the swimming pool. Pity we didn’t have time to play tennis! Parking was satisfactory.
Cons: Nil
6,8 Good
Pros: The location is excellent...the beds are very firm, but have lovely linen.
Cons: The room was basic and bathroom tired, aircon made a terrible noise. Very small tv. The hotel just lacked that luxury feeling one would expect from Pestana. Gin served on the terrace was 12 euros served in a plastic glass, very small measures and waiter poured all the tonic in, no selection just given bombay saphire and the bottle was almost finished. Breakfast was lovely but through 'cona' coffee was undrinkable. Disappointing as we have stayed in pestana before and this beautiful building just lacked luxury.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The pool, the architecture, the atmosphere
Cons: Loved everything but the city was very very quite and empty

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was perfect. We felt really well taken care of from the moment we arrived. It is a small charming yet high quality place. The breakfast is fresh and home made. I highly recommend dining there since it is a bit isolated. Dinner is traditional food cooked there, very convivial! The surroundings are beautiful lots of great walks around. The pool is very pleasant. We also did wine tasting with the wine of their vineyard- very good experience! All the design is arranged with taste. Overall very nice and relaxing weekend. The staff really goes above and beyond to please the guests. I highly recommend staying at Herdade de Vau!
Cons: The only little thing that was not perfect - even though it is really nothing - was the shower head.
9,5 Excellent
Pros: Great place to stay, very friendly personell creating quite a familiar atmosphere. Stunning views overlooking the hilly countryside of the Alentejo. Quite surrounding, where you can hear the birds singing in the morning. Interesting drive over a dirt road, but easy accessible ... one does not need a Jeep, but a sport-car might have some difficulties.
Cons: Nothing

The typically rural guest house features an outdoor swimming pool and a lush green garden. The guest house’s air-conditioned rooms include a private bathroom, flat-screen TV and a refrigerator. 7,0 Good
Pros: Staff were friendly and helpful
Cons: Not central enough for us
8,8 Excellent
Pros: An extremely attractive property in a lovely setting (we didn't use the pool but it looked inviting). We only stayed one night but the property merits a longer stay. We were made to feel very welcome and although slightly disappointed that the restaurant was not open we were given plenty of information about restaurants in nearby Beja. Breakfast was good, there was a wide selection of items including fruit, yoghurt, cheeses, meats and pastries, and the coffee was hot.
Cons: Only a small criticism but the hairdryer in the bathroom was of an unusual design and I didn't find it very efficient.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The whole place is very nice, confortable and the breakfast was very good
Cons: No pool towels

8,3 Excellent
Pros: It has a good location, it is ver homely and the staff is extremely welcoming, doing everything to make you comfortable.
Cons: My first room (in the first floor) was receiving all the smells coming from the kitchen. When I requested a new room, I was promptly offered a new one in the second floor,?which was a bit better. Internet did not work well in the first day, then it improved.
9,3 Excellent
Pros: breakfast good, location very central

10,0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so kind and breakfast was amazing!!
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Really nice little place right in the pedestrian zone (might get a bit difficult to park). Nice staff and very nice breakfast. Would definately recommend it.
Cons: The rooms are decorated in a "special" coulourful way which might not be everyones taste but it didnt bother us for 2 nights.
3,3 Mediocre
Pros: What did I like? Nothing. Really, nothing! It's the second time I stay here and I came back because the first time was more than acceptable, with a normal room (with windows) and a decent breakfast. But now... everything is changed. I can only say the cake at breakfast was good and the receptionist at check-out apologised, which wasn't really acceptable or good, but... I'm trying to find something positive here. Really, that's THE ONLY good thing I can say.
Cons: We were given room 113 (see the pictures I attached). It's really upstairs and THE ROOM HAS NO WINDOWS. Correction, it has one in the room but it opens on the inner stairs of the building so anyone can see inside the room and you, in turn, see the opposite wall (1 m from the window). The little window in the bathroom opens on the same stairs, and of course it is above the tub so if you open it when you shower you can wave the other guests... THE ROOM CONTAINED PERSONAL ITEMS! Dirty socks, blankets, hangers, chargers and... clothes! All of somebody else! See the pictures I uploaded. I'm serious! It's a 3 stars hotel with someone's dirty socks in your nightstand. I have no idea why booking.com would even rank this hotel anymore. Should I tell you about the cracked tiles, dirty toilet brush, someone's ring in the bathroom (creepy...). And did I mention the dead flowers? Or the 3 feet (1 m) tall statue of St. Peter in the room? Oh, yes... the remote controlS and the TV. 8 channels, all in Portuguese. We had 2 remote controls, one without batteries and sticky, and one with. Unfortunately, only the sticky remote control worked after we switched the batteries around. Like I said: it was a prison cell, a horrible experience. To add to it all, at check-in, the receptionist was smile-less, and treated us with a kind of superior/arrogant attitude, almost refusing to speak. THE GUESTS WERE NOISY moving furnitures at 4 a.m. and screaming (maybe they were trapped in the same kind of room and they were going mad...). Clearly, not a quiet hotel! I won't return the third time.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: From the moment we found this hotel, perfectly located within a cobbled shopping area hidden between little shops and restaurants, we fell in love with it. Such a pleasant change from the larger hotel chains, this place felt like staying with part of a family. The decor was filled with little memoirs of the lovely owners time growing up in Angola and it just felt so warm and inviting. Our room was perfect for purpose with a lovely little Juliet balcony that let the sun in and the sounds from the bustling street below. The breakfast, served every morning between 7:30 and 10:30 had a variety of continental treats and always cooked eggs available. Dina our lovely breakfast host was always very cheerful and helpful and always took time to talk with us and say hello. Such a cheerful soul and a great asset to the Hotel Bejense team. Susi on reception, the beautiful Susi, who also is a wonderful part of the team - thank you so much for putting up with our limited knowledge of the Portuguese language, without you we wouldn’t have known about the free parking and the lovely restaurant recommendations. We enjoyed our time so much in Beja and will definitely come back, but will also recommend it to anyone of our friends looking for a trip to the non touristic part of this beautiful country. Thank you for making our time here so memorable.

Pros: Loved the tranquility you bread in the air
Cons: They charge for every single request. Don't do anything to pleasure the costumer if the service is not included on the package. Simple things like late check out. Other hotels with less stars do that for free, specially when you have kids. The food is not their best quality.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel is really great. It has something for everyone including families. We sampled wine with the manager who was very welcoming. The restaurant staff were excellent, food quality is great. The wine and olives from their vineyard are outstanding. I just loved my stay here!

Pros: The staff and external areas. External and internal pools are very good and it’s an excellent place for kids. The hotel’s surrounding are absolutely lovely.
Cons: The rooms and some of the internal areas need modernization. The hotel was short-staffed during our visit and although the employers were clearly doing their best it was not enough to overcome the delays, issues with cleanliness (overflowing trash cans) and rush hours in the bar, during breakfast and dinner.
