Pros: Gosh, I had so many things I love about this underrated place. Kakeyu is rarely visited by foreign travelers, which is a real shame. The staff, especially this kind gentleman named Kariya-san made sure that I felt welcomed and happy despite being alone. He offered to snap photos for me during dinner since he noticed I was alone and was on hand to help me out. He also doubled up as our tour guide for the winter light up at the temple behind the hotel and hotel concierge. The food was excellent and made form local ingredients. I especially love the shinshuu apple juice and the local ice-cream. I love the buffet-style dining cuz I can choose my own food There is a shuttle bus from Ueda Station or Matsumoto Station and we were given sweets upon boarding. I felt recharged and my soul renewed after my stay. The female rotenburo onsen has a spot in the corner where you lie down flat and look at the sky above you
Cons: The hotel had a few technical trainees from Vietnam and one of them showed me table 20 instead of table 12 (I knew cuz I understood basic Japanese). I suppose she just arrived in Japan and her Japanese wasn’t that good. Confusion arose when another guest was assigned to my table as well but the staff was quick to fix it
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The buffet breakfast and dinner is excellent, lots of choices and delicious. Staffs are very friendly and helpful.

7,5 Good
Pros: 1) Breakfast is fully enough to feel “Nagano” and “Zen”. 2) Unit-bath in the room was Hinoki sauna. Spacious independent toilet. 3) Room306 was classic Japanese furniture and interior including bed making service. 4) The town is in a middle of mountain peaceful and quiet. 5) The lobby in 1st floor is like gorgeous club lounge. Free coffee drink bar, tea and an LP record player.
Cons: 2) Water-pressure in unit bath was weak. 3) There was not enough pre-information of bed making time. I was surprised the futon was gone after returning from the breakfast. 4) The town is paused in old-glorious days. Most of shops are closed around 4pm or not operating. a) Not using a car could limit activity area. Train is at once an hour to or from Ueda downtown. b) The area is very local. You may feel very Japanese peaceful atmosphere and may feel silence. c) The accommodation is not fully equipped goods such as hair-dryer. You need to ask staff.
7,9 Good
Pros: Location and staff and service
Cons: Pillows were hard as were bedding...place is shabby needs a make over. Broken curtains with hole lots of stains on furniture
