Grand Hotel Portovenere - Portovenere - Building
1
8,9 Excellent (968 reviews)
R6 191+
Overview Reviews
The Grand Hotel Portovenere, which used to be a Franciscan monastary in the 17th century, has recently been carefully renovated, combining its ancient beauty with modern sophistication. Overlooking the picturesque village of Portovenere, our guests will be charmed by the elegance our hotel offers amid the backdrop of the Gulf of the Poets, an area coveted by travelers for centuries.Just steps from the village center, the Grand Hotel Portovenere offers remodeled rooms in the soothing shades of sea green, sand and yellow to reflect the light and colors of the environment surrounding the hotel. Our large panoramic terrace is home to our restaurant Palmaria and Venus bar, both open to resident and non-resident guests alike.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful structure, strategic location and super breakfast! We also tried the restaurant and recommend it very much. Excellent staff and services!
5,4 Okay
Pros: The property was in a good location and had very nice views. The free breakfast was pretty good and the room was comfortable (though nothing spectacular) We also met a fantastic employee who walked us to the local bus, assisted with our luggage and made sure we had everything figured out. That gentleman (the porter/bellhop) was spectacular. I regret not catching his name.
Cons: Unfortunately, it seems as though the property was not prepared for guests in the season we visited. “Beach access” was definitely not in their current offering and when we inquired about where to swim, we were simply told “walk to the left and there are some spots. The water will be very cold.” I understand that not everyone might swim in early fall, but we would have loved to at least sit and read by the ocean. The stone beach we could find was not very close, not indicated in any way, and there was not a soul there. In fact, all the entrances to the beach had been blocked off and it seemed like some type of maintenance was under way. If they do offer beach amenities (chairs, towels) in the summer, it would have been nice to know that the beach would be closed and these services would not be available to us upon our arrival. It was really disappointing for a coastal town, and one of the main reasons we originally chose to visit. Additionally, the ferry to the main tourist spots was not running when we arrived, and no alternate transportation was offered besides a “50 euro taxi which would arrive in an hour.” Their site had referenced a shuttle to take us, but I suspect this might have only been available under heavy demand. Again, never indicated to us when we booked, nor when we spoke at the front desk. So we struck out on both an afternoon at the beach and a night in the heart of cinque Terre. One final issue - the WiFi was actually stronger outside the hotel than in our room. None of our devices would hold a connection. Not the end of the world normally, but frustrating when you find out that the beach and the town won’t be in your plans. Overall, the property did not merit its price in terms of amenities nor luxury. Our trip to the Grand Hotel sounded a lot better on paper than it ended up being
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was 1st class. The room, service, assistance and recommendations were all excellent. The rooms were clean and the amenities were outstanding.
8,2 Excellent
Pros: I really enjoyed my time here. Lovely view from restaurant terrace and the breakfast was wonderful. The location is perfect - right across from the boat and near the castle. Toiletries and towels are very nice. I agree with others about the elevator but plan accordingly and you'll be fine. Staff were efficient and helpful - not super chipper but hard working and had answers. Loaded with Americans but so is all of Cinque Terre. Leave the hotel and you hear the Italian.
Cons: Can be loud. They have wood floors so you hear the chairs moving above. Elevator fits three people so during a busy stay may be a problem for some. But again, nothing huge.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The setting in this beautiful town is exceptional. Our room overlooking the sea was very well presented. Staff were attentive, even had the manager checking we were happy and he farewelled us as well. While breakfasts and dinner were good, we didn’t find the food to be outstanding, however restaurant staff offered good service. Use of hotel car park was great.
3,8 Mediocre
Pros: The view was amazing and the food was fantastic.
Cons: The bedding was not good at all and the hotel was very noisy Also think it’s ridiculous you have to pay to get clothes ironed ! Very room should have an iron or service for free - big inconvenience on vacation

Pros: location was fantastic, facing the bay; there is street parking available by the hotel, and they were free; friendly and helpful staffs in front office and in dining area; strongly recommend this area for visitors visiting Cinque Terre with car, away from crowded places and all accessible
Cons: room size a bit small, bigger would be better; bathroom ventilation could be better, as we were there, weather was wet, and without ventilator, not pleasant; not much happening in Le Grazie in Oct, so rather difficult to find food, but if you enjoy quietness, this is the place

Pros: Location with a balcony over looking the water. Lovely place
2,5 Mediocre
Pros: Ok to be fair if you like driving through crazy winding roads to end up at a mediocre hotel near the seaside then ok it’s not that bad.
Cons: First we paid for an upgrade for an in room breakfast with private balcony. Well, balcony is there but was told next morning no such service is being offered. And to make it worst it was New Year’s Eve so the receptionist was rushing off. We got there at 7 she checked us in and passed us three keys to three rooms without telling us which key is for which room. Ended up my friend got our room but when we realized it was already too late and very late so I tried to call and ask the reception but wait... nobody was around!!!! So the plan my wife had for an in room breakfast watching the sunrise at a balcony turned into a 8am only available breakfast with a few pieces of croissant and cold meats.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Really loved the location - a wonderful seaside property! Met the owner, a warm charming man, who was very welcoming. Fantastic pool and swimming area. Was very quiet due to off season. Loved it!
Cons: The staff person in the morning was curt. Not fun to wake up to that when asking a few simple questions. The place was empty so it made no sense.
6,7 Good
Pros: The rooms were laid out beautifully. We had patio level rooms for two of our party, the other had a window only room. Regardless, we greatly appreciated the view and the accommodation. Especially having parking available to us.
Cons: The beds were incredibly hard and sagged in the middle, and also felt tilted towards the middle on both beds. My husband and I kept getting stuck between the two beds in the space pushed together to make a king. Like the bed kept trying to slide apart. My friends in the other rooms said the same thing.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful city. Very walkable to everything including the ferry to Cinque Terre.
6,7 Good
Pros: The apartment is well situated, with a sea view in a quiet place. Has own parking, which is helpful in Portovenere. Room space is enough, rooms are warm and clean.
Cons: No safety. The builbing is open all day and night, everyone can come to your door. At night the parking is open. No problem to steal a car. Kitchen in the room exists, but to use it you must pay extra 30 euro (we were happy - they let us use for free). Also if you haven’t wash a dish - 30 euro. No cleaning if you stay less than a week. No problem for us (we stayed for one night) but others would consider. No staff available. Only two hours in the morning (checkin time 08-10) and three hours in the afternoon (chekout time 15-18). And even these hours you are not sure to have assistance: we had to call by cellphone to get a staff at checkout. Also as at night when a fire alarm was shouting for half an hour before turned off. Funny: the flash in toilet gives a very small portion of water. We complained but with no result. This is ECONOMY ))
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and and extent view. Pool was good
Cons: Wifi didn't work in the room and water pressure in the shower was rubbish, also hot water kept going to cold and water was undrinkable.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast on outdoor patio was good.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: The location with the very nice view.

Cons: .
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Location and staff
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Location was superb -- out the back of the hotel put you along the water; a very short walk along the street in front took you to the public bus stop to La Spezia - very convenient. Very short walk to the center of Portovenere and all of its wonderful cafes and restaurants (we particularly enjoyed dinner at Tre Torre). Breakfast buffet was perfectly lovely. Room was very clean (we had peculiar room on the top floor that said it had 3 beds but double bed was on the main floor and 3 twin beds were up in the loft). We were only 2 people but if you needed to, could fit a family in there.
Cons: Staff could have been more helpful/friendlier when we asked about ferry/bus schedules (vague wave toward the piers). No information given about the hours of the breakfast buffet or anything else about the hotel. Wifi in the room wasn't particularly strong.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The location, the kindness of the staff and the view from the terrace
10,0 Excellent
Pros: parking in front of the house, large room, not far away from the center
Cons: the bread at the breakfast,
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful location with lovely view of the water. Rooms were small, but clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay. Perfect location for exploring the Cinque Terre, then relaxing in this seaside town.
Cons: Think it was a little bit high in price. Breakfast was included, but options were limited.

Pros: The location was amazing! We had a room with a balcony. Each night we enjoyed a bottle of Prosecco while watching the sunset. We walked along the waterfront to Byron’s Grotto and the church on the hill. Had dinner at the restaurant of their sister hotel: fantastic food and view. Our room was perfect. Would definitely recommend Hoel Belvedere to friends and family!
7,5 Good
Pros: We liked its location and ease of parking; the staff was helpful and kind; the view of the water was very good and made all the difference.
Cons: The smell of cleaning detergents used was very strong and smelled more chemical. It was so hard to get used to. The shower head kept falling down and sprayed all over me!!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Our stay was perfect! The views and location are unbeatable! The staff was wonderful, welcoming, warm and accommodating, even accommodating special requests for a high floor and sea view. The views from the breakfast balcony were idyllic. Breakfast was plentiful as were the cappuccinos. There was even a chess set in the lounge area. Hotel was just steps from the ferries, supermarket and bus stop. Couldn’t have asked for a better location or hotel. Everything was comfortable, quiet and peaceful. Shower and bathroom are tiny but so what. Everything else was wonderful. Great value! I didn’t want to leave and can’t wait to return! Will definitely stay here again.

Pros: The view from the room balcony is spectacular perfect! We love Portovenere, this view from the room is stunning as we spent our new year countdown night in our room to watch the fireworks. We like the host, friendly and kind. We like the parking that provided just below the unit, it’s so convenient to park, a non typical Italian place with free parking provided.
Cons: No
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Location Parking Value for money Views Size
Cons: Lacked kitchen equipment
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The view from the flat was breathtaking, and the town beautiful. Our hosts were extremely friendly and helpful
Cons: The flat was less central than we had imagined, and as there was no public transport in October, and parking was very expensive we had to go everywhere on foot, which was tiring, especially when going home uphill!
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Nice and clean Apartment with a beautifull view over Portovenere.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic place to stay amazing location and views Away from all the tourists a beautiful quiet little sea side town Never wanted to leave
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing amazing balcony view! We’re a family of four and our accommodations were two bedrooms with two bathrooms connected. This made it very convenient getting ready for our day! It also had great garage parking and was a short walk from a great restaurant!
Cons: We’re coffee drinkers and didn’t find a place to buy coffee until after driving the mountain roads to a Cinque Terra restaurant.
4,6 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: The lady (owner?) who finally answered the buzzer was rude, impatient and clearly felt that we were getting in the way of her sunday afternoon. The process of registration and payment was Byzantine and she kept sharply rebuking my partner who was trying to fill in the Italian form despite us not speaking Italian. When shown the room she opened the door and gave us the key and left despite the fact that the bed was a pull down and took 5 mins to find and another 5 mins to work out how to pull it down. she also took exception to the fact that despite free parking being offered, because there was a family gathering in het flat we'd have to park elsewhere. In the end we forced the issue and managed to squeeze it into a space despite her looking very annoyed. The room also had barely a sea view from a dark narrow side terrace. They had a 9.0 score displayed on the door and so to try to claim exceptional status is a bit of a joke.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean! Beautiful view of the port from balcony! Complete Kitchenette. No frills but very very clean!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: A splendid view, clean appartment and very pleasant staff (relatives of grandma who is very happy)!

Cons: I paid for a deluxe room but the hotel allocated a room at the side of the hotel despite my request for a room at the front with a sea view. the room was supposed to be deluxe but it was dark as it never got the sun. the balcony was covered in bushes and the chairs faced these overgrown bushes which were full of insects and from which i got lots of bites. the television did not work and there were no drinking glasses in the room. they finally changed the room on the last of the four days and after much haggling with them.

Pros: Beautiful location, 5min walking to the beach and 10 min to old Tellaro, 10 min by bus to Lerici .Very good continental breakfast. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent. Room was very clean. The view was amazing! Staff was helpful, thank you.
7,5 Good
Pros: Great location with 1/2 mile walk to can't miss village of Tellaro where the road ends in a cul de sac with a couple of restaurants and gelato shop. From there, ride the bus to Lerici proper. Be sure to see the tunnel near the central bus stop that was a WWII bomb shelter. There are historical narratives posted along the length of it. Climb to the top of the castle for great views. Eat in one of many marina side restaurants while watching dozens of boats bobbing at anchor. Lerici is the unpretentious version of Forte dei Marmi. Breakfast offered wide variety of breads, meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, fresh fruit. Long stairway down to beach made it easily accessible. Very clean hotel that met our needs.
Cons: Hotel was adequate, could use a little updating. Although met expectation, beach was not in accord with our preference of white sandy beaches along Florida's gulf coast. It was picturesque but not as user friendly since the sand is very coarse and surf is rocky. Chairs available for rental. Took a long time to cool room off after our arrival. Would have liked an extra pillow. Descending three steps into room a difficulty with heavy luggage.
9,2 Excellent
Cons: Too far from center
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast are really good, full continental breakfast with Italian food like prosciutto cotto or mozzarella and also sweets like torta di cioccolato or cornetto con cioccolato. Room had amazing view from balcony to sea and big windows to look at it even if its raining.
Cons: Elevator is slow, it take time to arrive at floor and inside is too warm. Maybe is good to ask before if guests need everyday towel/bedclothes change- let's try be more ecological

Pros: Breakfast, location
Cons: The view from our windows
9,6 Excellent
Pros: +Hotel staff is extremely friendly. Manager Paulo and most of his other colleagues are always trying to help. +Hotel has excellent breakfast with lots of vegetables and fruits, from own farm. +many hotel rooms and breakfast room have wonderful sea view
Cons: -there is re-construction site of old villa in front of hotel, so there is noice and also the beach is bit difficult to access, since the stairs under construction as well. -beach is very close to hotel, but in summer beach is bit overcrowded and partly owned by another hotel. Owners/ staff of the other beach hotel are not friendly to the beach visitors

Cons: No

Pros: Location Parking Value for money Views Size
Cons: Lacked kitchen equipment
